Typical: you wait ages for an Android update, and then three come along at once. LG is finally updating the LG Optimus 3D, LG Optimus Black and LG Optimus 2X to Android Gingerbread 2.3.

An update for the LG Optimus 2X, pictured above, is available today. The LG Optimus 3D goes Gingerbread from 21 November, and the LG Optimus Black gets the update from 28 November. After the three top-of-the-line Optimuses — Optimii? — are updated in Europe, owners of those three phones in the rest of the world and the rest of the range will be updated.

Before you get too excited, that timetable refers to unlocked phones — if you’re on a network contract it may well take longer.

Gingerbread is the most recent version of Android, although not for much longer: the next version, Ice Cream Sandwich, has been unveiled and will debut on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus later this month.

Gingerbread brings slight changes to the notification bar and keyboard, adds video calling and a download manager. Other features, such as NFC, aren’t that relevant in this country. Click here to see the details of every version of Android.

Android updates can take a while to reach your phone because manufacturers tend to add their own front end and apps to Google’s software. LG’s interface isn’t the most complex, so it’s a mystery why it’s taken so long to be updated.
