GarageBand, the brilliant music app that would make a tone-deaf macaque feel talented and enabled us to craft the melodic masterpiece embedded below, is now available on the iPhone and iPod touch.
Previously the exclusive preserve of iPad owners, the new scaled-down version doesn’t appear to have lost much in translation. You get the same selection of touch-controlled instruments, as well as the Smart Instruments, which do all the complicated note playing for you, while you sit back and tell them which key to play in.
You can record eight tracks-worth of music, which we found a little limiting in our tests, but on the plus side it will force you to be concise when you craft your compositions.
There’s also the option to plug in a guitar and use your iOS device as a guitar pedal, with loads of effects to choose from. Marvel as you watch the hours fly by, trying to emulate the funky-fresh guitar sound from that one Sister Sledge song.
If you fancy yourself the next Justin Bieber, you can croon into your gadgetry using the in-built microphone, and send your finished songs to your nan, who will probably tell you it sounds lovely. Or if your nan uses Logic Pro, you can send her your songs in that format so she can keep tinkering later from a desktop machine.
We’re huge fans of the GarageBand app. At £2.99 it’s pricier than most offerings on the App Store, but it’s well worth checking out. And let us know what you think of it in the comments, or on our Facebook wall.
