\nLahore, a 1,200-year-old Hindu temple will be restored after \u2018illegal occupants\u2019
\nwere evicted from it following a long court fight, the federal body overseeing
\nminority worship places in the country said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) last month retrieved the possession of Valmiki Mandir (temple) situated near the famous Anarkali Bazaar Lahore from a Christian family.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Restored according
\nto \u2018master plan\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n

\nspokesperson Amir Hashmi told PTI that Valmiki temple will be restored in
\naccordance with a \u2018master plan\u2019 in the coming days.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOver 100
\nHindus, some Sikh and Christian leaders today gathered at the Valmiki Temple.
\nHindus performed their religious rituals and had lungar (food) for the first
\ntime it was retrieved from the grabbers,\u201d he said.<\/span>Besides Krishna
\nTemple, Valmiki Temple is the only functional temple in Lahore.<\/span><\/p>\n
The Christian family, which claims to have converted to Hinduism, had been facilitating only the Valmiki caste Hindus for worship at the temple for the last two decades.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
ETPB\u2019s land<\/span><\/h2>\n
An ETPB
\nofficial said the temple\u2019s land was transferred to the ETPB in the revenue
\nrecord, but the family in 2010-2011 claimed to be the owner of the property. Later
\nthey filed a case in the civil court, Dawn Newspaper reported.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said besides
\ngoing into litigation, the family also made the temple only for the Valmiki
\nHindus. This left the trust with no option but to fight the case in court.<\/span><\/p>\n
\u201cThis time, the court also reprimanded the petitioner for false claims,\u201d the official added.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
Temple suffered
\ndamage in past<\/span><\/h2>\n
In 1992, in the
\naftermath of the Babri Masjid demolition in India, an angry mob wielding
\nweapons stormed into the Valmiki Temple. It smashed the idols of Krishna and
\nValmiki, broke utensils and crockery in the kitchen and seized the gold with
\nwhich the statues were embellished.<\/span><\/p>\n
The temple was
\ndemolished to rubble and the building was set on fire. The shops in the
\nneighbourhood also caught fire and it took days for the authorities to
\nextinguish the flames.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The ETPB spokesman
\ntold Dawn newspaper that a one-man commission constituted by the Supreme Court
\nof Pakistan presented its recommendations to the government, stating that the
\ntemple must be renovated to provide better workshop facilities to the Hindu
\ncommunity.<\/span><\/p>\n
But the ETPB, in the
\nwake of the litigation, was unable to start restoration work at the temple
\nconstructed on over 10 marla land worth millions in the heart of the city, the
\nspokesperson said.<\/span><\/p>\n
The ETPB looks after the temples and land left over by Sikhs
\nand Hindus who migrated to India after the Partition. It oversees 200 gurdwaras
\nand 150 temples across Pakistan.<\/span><\/p>\n
