A couple of months after Pennsylvania’s Democratic Senate candidate John Fetterman had a stroke in May, his Republican opponent and former TV personality Mehmet Oz posted a link to his more than 3 million Twitter followers. “Hoping to make it to a *Fetterman for Senate* campaign event? Details are linked below!”

The website, paid for by Oz’s campaign, depicted Fetterman as an overweight, shirtless and “lazy” “basement bum” as he recovered. Fetterman returned to the campaign trail in mid-August and leads Oz, who’s been endorsed by Donald Trump, in the latest polls.

Republican Senate candidate Mehmet Oz attacked his opponent as “lazy” for not campaigning enough. Fetterman, a Democrat who’s leading in the polls, returned to the campaign trail three months after his stroke.

The move instantly became the subject of national talk shows, cementing social media even further as America’s latest battleground ahead of the 2022 midterm elections. And that battle is turning bleak.

Many candidates are now following in the steps of Trump, whose frequent harassing, bullying and rule-breaking posts to Twitter turned the political world upside down during his 2016 bid for the White House and then his four years in office. As a result, political and social media researchers say, the midterm elections have seen Trump-like behavior become the norm rather than the outlier. Candidates and elected officials are more often taking to Twitter to spread lies and disinformation, to attack their perceived enemies, and to troll fellow politicians.

Further, a majority of Republican nominees on the ballot for this November’s midterm elections have denied or questioned the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, according to a report from the Washington Post, posing a threat to America’s democratic principles.

On some extremist-filled alternatives like Gab and Telegram, candidates are calling for civil war and advocating violence against the government while they echo Trump’s rhetoric that their political opponents are evil.

“Time to take the gloves off,” Florida Republican congressional candidate Laura Loomer wrote on the social networking apps Gab and Telegram in August after a scandal over Trump’s reported hiding of top-secret government documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence and golf club triggered a raid from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Loomer, who’s described herself as “pro-white nationalism” and a “#ProudIslamaphobe,” continued to attack the FBI even after the Department of Justice said it found many of the US government’s most sensitive secrets at Trump’s complex, despite his staff’s declarations they’d already been returned.

“If you’re a freedom loving American, you must remove the Words decorum and civility from your vocabulary,” Loomer wrote. “This is a WAR!” She was banned from Twitter in 2018 for violating the site’s rules against hateful conduct.

Just south of her, Republican Luis Miguel, a candidate for the Florida House of Representatives, took it a step further. “Under my plan, all Floridians will be able to shoot FBI, IRS, ATF, and all other federal troops on sight,” Miguel tweeted. “Let freedom ring.”

These posts are extreme, and in Miguel’s case got him reportedly banned from Twitter. Both candidates lost their primary bids. They also didn’t respond to requests for comment. But experts say their approach to social media follows a pattern of dangerous internet-grown fanaticism invading the political world, particularly on Twitter.

People may turn to massive platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and YouTube to get the latest news on their favorite celebrities, talk about big sports games or participate in the hottest new trend. But Twitter in particular has solidified its foothold in American politics, turning into a crucial tool for lawmakers to communicate with both their constituents and the media organizations that follow them. And the results have dramatically reshaped the political process as well.

“In the last 10 years, we’ve seen an increase in the amount of resources devoted to social media,” said Bradford Fitch, head of the nonpartisan Congressional Management Foundation, which works with lawmakers’ offices to help improve how they operate. Congressional offices now typically have two people devoted to media, rather than one person a decade ago, he added. And more lawmakers are now posting to their accounts, rather than having aides do it for them.

“On some level because it hits and accelerates the national psyche,” he said. “We are seeing over time, the incentives are for members of Congress to be outrageous.”

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, one of Twitter’s most-followed users who’s finalizing a $44 billion purchase of the company, has said he plans to remove the few guardrails Twitter has to discourage harassment and bad behavior. Such a move has been widely criticized by civil rights and anti-hate groups, including the Anti-Defamation League, who say Twitter needs more moderation, not less.

Of course, social media didn’t create hyper-partisan lawmakers. Congress has over the years been home to plenty of bullies, conspiracists and other unsavory types. In the 18th century, for example, two lawmakers got into a brawl on the floor of the House of Representatives over the country’s diplomatic approach to France. In the 19th century, one senator drew a pistol and pointed it at his rival in the Senate chamber during a debate over slavery. Though today’s antics are comparatively tame, there are still plenty of lawmakers who pushed conspiracy theories about everything from climate change to the racist lie Trump himself promoted that President Barack Obama wasn’t born in the US, thus disqualifying him from public office.

Meanwhile, attention online isn’t a guarantee of success. Freshman North Carolina Rep. Madison Cawthorn quickly became a right-wing social media star when he was sworn in as one of the youngest lawmakers ever. Though he’d become a celebrity, controversy soon followed. He lost his seat to a lesser-known Republican primary opponent in May.

Social media has even changed how lawmakers communicate when they’re at home and at the US Capitol. Fitch’s research found that members are much more partisan on social media when they’re in DC, rather than the people-pleasing persona they take on at home.

Republican strategists have said social media offers another telling benefit. Posting online allows politicians to circumvent traditional news organizations that often ask questions and hold them accountable for whether they’re spreading a lie or telling the truth.

Social media wave

Trump’s 2016 campaign and his four years as president ushered in a new era of extremism among lawmakers, but he wasn’t the first elected official to use social media.

Most historians and industry experts point back to Barack Obama, whose 2008 presidential campaign used websites and social media to share videos watched by more than 50 million people on YouTube alone, according to researchers at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. Obama’s campaign also sent out messages to its 13 million-member-strong email list, created a specialized volunteer social network with more than 2 million profiles and took in more than $500 million in online donations.

Obama’s messages weren’t extreme like Trump’s. Obama’s team treated social media as more an arm of his presidency than a window into his mind. Trump tweeted about everything from discussing the latest TV ratings to attacking immigrants to dismissing gay rights, as well as making threats of military action that could trigger a nuclear war.

Many of Trump’s pronouncements were quickly labeled as racist, sexist and anti-Muslim, but that only appeared to strengthen his appeal. “He was the one saying the things people were thinking,” said Mike Rothschild, a journalist whose book The Storm Is Upon Us dissects the social media-fueled conspiracy theory QAnon, which focuses on Trump’s rumored efforts to fight his perceived enemies. “It’s the politicizing of everything.”

At first, Republicans in DC scoffed at Trump’s style. But after he won the presidency in 2016, they began to emulate his approach. And many of them received similar attention too.

On Jan. 3, 2021, Lauren Boebert, a little-known freshman congresswoman and owner of a gun-themed bar from Rifle, Colorado, posted a campaign-style video to Twitter after arriving in Washington, DC. In it, she confidently walks down a Capitol Hill street with a gun on her hip.

“Even though I now work in one of the most liberal cities in America, I refuse to give up my rights, especially my second amendment rights,” she can be heard saying amid rock ‘n’ roll-inspired background music. “I will carry my firearm to DC and in Congress.”

It was effective. The 33-year-old congresswoman racked up more than 6 million views, over 10,700 retweets and 51,300 likes.

Let me tell you why I WILL carry my Glock to Congress. Government does NOT get to tell me or my constituents how we are allowed to keep our families safe.I promise to always stand strong for our 2nd Amendment rights.https://t.co/E75tYpdN4B pic.twitter.com/qg7QGenrNo

— Lauren Boebert (@laurenboebert) January 4, 2021

Boebert and her colleagues like Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene have not just used their accounts to stake out positions and attack critics but also to regularly fundraise and sell merch too. Greene moved many of her posts to the messaging app Telegram after Twitter banned her account earlier this year for repeatedly spreading COVID disinformation. A hat she sold after the Trump raid declared, “Defund the FBI.”

Boebert, Greene and Cawthorn were among the 147 Republicans who voted to overturn the 2020 election results on Jan. 6, 2021.

Not all lawmakers are using Twitter to harass colleagues or spread lies. New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a notable liberal star, has also become a national figure in large part because of her Twitter and Instagram use. She typically posts about key moments from congressional hearings, her positions on important issues, clap-backs at critics and the occasional personal moment, like her success playing the online battle game League of Legends

But what’s stood out about an increasing number of lawmakers, Rothschild says, is that they’re not just extending political debates and their process to the online world. Many of them are on the extreme right, and they’re posting wild comments like Boebert’s promise to carry her gun on Capitol Hill. The posts speak to their base and grab attention from critics, whose outrage often helps drive their message even further.

“You’re seeing this filter down to state and local council meetings, where people show up and spout crazy stuff and it goes viral,” he added. “It turns everything into a Twitter argument.”

Donald Trump’s shadow looms large on Twitter, even though his account was permanently suspended.

Social media frenzy

A lawmaker’s ability to grab attention on social media may be a critical part of campaigning, but it’s not a guaranteed path to success. Some lawmakers have gone from shining stars to sudden flameouts, in part because of their bombast.

One such member was Cawthorn, the far-right representative from North Carolina who quickly drew a following for sharing conspiracy theories on his social media accounts, including some related to QAnon. Cawthorn focused so much on messaging that he told Republican colleagues, “I have built my staff around comms rather than legislation,” according to a 2021 memo obtained by Time magazine.

But he also had Trump’s habit of making comments that were later criticized as false or misleading, including his own admission that a campaign video ad claiming he had planned to serve in the Navy “with a nomination to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis” wasn’t true. Shortly after he accused other Republican lawmakers of participating in drug-fueled orgies earlier this year, he lost his seat to a nationally unknown primary challenger. He’ll leave office in January.

Meanwhile, Twitter permanently suspended Trump from its site after his fiery rhetoric, threats and efforts to overturn his loss of the 2020 presidential election helped to fuel the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on Congress. And Greene was stripped of her committee assignments in February after her apparent support for violence against her political opponents.

Lawmakers appear to be shifting strategy in response. Both Trump and Greene have decamped to alternative social networks. Trump built his own Truth Social, which allows him to post whatever he wants though it bans many of his critics.

Others like Loomer and Greene, meanwhile, have begun relying on peer-to-peer messaging apps like Telegram, which aren’t as public facing as a Twitter account but also don’t draw as much criticism or moderation either. “They can be easily forwarded, they’re targeted to supporters, and they aren’t easily tracked,” said Betsy Sigman, a distinguished teaching professor emeritus at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business.

For now, at least, candidates like Pennsylvania’s Oz appear focused on mainstream social media apps like Twitter and Instagram. That’s where Oz has continued posting articles and videos attacking Fetterman’s stroke recovery.

Oct 2022

In the years since YouTube TV first launched, Google’s live TV streaming service has consistently proven to be one of the best, with an excellent channel selection and an unbeatable user experience. While the service has since almost doubled in price, it’s also added a bunch of features and continues to be a better choice than any of its premium competitors, including Hulu Plus Live TVFuboTV and DirecTV Stream.

YouTube TV’s main strength for cord-cutters is its sheer number of channels. It now offers 79 of the top 100 networks, the most of any streaming service, a count that includes numerous cable staples plus all four local networks — ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC — and local PBS stations nationwide.

Don’t Like

Beyond channels, YouTube TV is easy to use: it’s slick and speedy on a variety of TVs and mobile devices. Its cloud DVR is the best in the business, with unlimited storage and pretty much all the capabilities of a hardware DVR. The service also offers a 4K streaming upgrade — for an additional $20 monthly — which includes unlimited simultaneous streams and downloadable DVR recordings.

The big snag is the price, and if you’re a cord-cutter, the cut-down Sling TV Blue at $35 a month is the best way to save money. At the other end of the spectrum, Hulu Plus Live TV is an excellent alternative and while it’s going up to $70 soon, it also throws in the a modified Disney Bundle. That said, if you’re used to the myriad channels and easy DVR of cable, then YouTube TV’s base $65 package is worth the money. It’s slick, it’s easy to use and represents an excellent value.

What do you get?

YouTube TV is different from YouTube, the free video service with more than 2 billion users a month. YouTube TV offers an experience similar to cable TV, with live channels and on-demand content available on a variety of devices. It works with Apple TV, Roku, Android TV, Chromecast and Amazon Fire TV along with numerous smart TVsphones, tablets, game consoles and web browsers.

The service operates in much the same way as its competitors — there’s a program guide, a DVR and dozens of channels. But what really separates YouTube TV from other premium ($60-plus a month) services such as DirecTV Stream, Hulu Plus Live TV and FuboTV? Let’s take a look.

Premium services compared

Step-up packages with more channels No ($20/month for 4K, unlimited streams, offline DVR downloads)  Yes Yes Yes
Simultaneous streams per account 3 20  2 ($10 option for unlimited) 3

YouTube TV’s channel selection is excellent, with more from CNET’s list of 100 top channels than any other competitor, though Hulu is catching up. That said, more channels doesn’t necessarily mean more of what you want — some services such as FuboTV lean heavily on sports, while others are increasingly wide-ranging. It’s best to check the list at the end of this article, which compares individual channels across services, to make sure you’re getting the channels you want. While competitors include a number of channel upgrade packages, YouTube includes everything for the one price, though there is one exception which we’ll explore in the next section.

Last year, Google introduced two new features, namely 5.1 surround where available for all subscribers (most competitors are only in stereo) and an expansion of the DVR search which can now pick out specific sports (most useful for events such as the Olympics).

What’s it like to use?

YouTube TV interfaceYouTube TV interface

Screenshot: Ty Pendlebury/CNET

YouTube TV’s user interface is fairly simple. There are three top-level tabs broken into Library, Home and Live. Library is where your DVR content lives while Home is where both featured and live thumbnails appear. The third, Live tab is a familiar-looking program grid which displays both currently playing and upcoming shows. You can search for content from the top of any page, making it relatively easy to jump straight to the programming you want. You can also perform searches with a compatible voice remote or Google Assistant. While this is easier if you have an Android TV streamer, you could also perform searches on your Google Nest Mini and play it on a Roku, for example.

The DVR works as expected and breaks up recorded content into manageable chunks such as recently recorded and most viewed. The DVR also includes the ability to rewind and fast-forward freely through recordings, even ones that aren’t yet completed. The Roku interface offers a 15-second skip by default, while the Apple TV’s control system via the Siri Remote is even better. You can use the touchpad to scroll through videos — and it’s glorious! It’s so much fun, and thumbnails make it relatively easy to get to the part you want.

In the past, when a show appeared in a network’s on-demand library, it would automatically replace the version in your cloud DVR, means you’d lose the ability to fast-forward through commercials. YouTube TV says it got rid of that restriction in October 2018, but some CNET readers have complained that it still occurs at times. Additionally, YouTube TV’s DVR is not truly unlimited — the shows will expire after nine months, but this is still a lot longer than the 30 days you get with most rivals.

While Google used to integrate YouTube into YouTube TV — with trailers and related content on a show’s About page — this appears to no longer be the case. However, the company is continually tweaking the interface, and we may see YouTube content appear again at some point.

Is it worth the $20 for 4K?

youtube-tv-4kyoutube-tv-4k

The 4K upgrade includes a small selection of shows, but most are over two years old.

Ty Pendlebury/CNET

In a word, no. There’s simply not enough content right now to justify the upgrade, but there’s one new feature which may prove the most useful, especially for travelers. In pure content terms, though, the top tier of Netflix is $18 per month and offers thousands of hours of 4K content alone, plus offline viewing.

Introduced to coincide with the Olympics, YouTube TV’s $20 4K Plus add-on offers benefits including 4K sports and on-demand, an unlimited number of simultaneous streams, and a newfound ability to save DVR recordings for offline mobile viewing. If you’re a frequent flyer or subway rider, the ability to watch prerecorded shows without an active connection could be a real boon.

As per YouTube TV’s 4K page, the additional content includes shows from Discovery, ESPN, Fox Sports, FX, Nat Geo, NBC Sports and Tastemade. The interface includes a 4K button to help find content, but at present this doesn’t constitute enough to stick around for. In addition to a handful of shows, there’s also Thursday Night Football, “live” Premier League soccer, and college football on ESPN. The NCAA adds a bunch of 4K content, but if you want football, 4K or a combination of the two then FuboTV offers even more sports for the same $80 price tag.

The content that is available, such as the cooking show Make This Tonight and the travel competition show Basic Versus Baller, do look good, with better contrast and color than regular broadcast TV.

Think of it as a cable replacement

When it originally appeared YouTube TV was a very attractive way to save money over cable. Yet as the service has piled on more channels, it has also added further costs. So, when you take that $65 monthly fee and apply it to the $50 you’re already paying for internet, it means you’re paying over $110 a month. Many cable TV providers will give you a TV-and-internet bundle for around the same money.

Prices vary a lot, of course, and with cable, you probably have to pay rental equipment fees, taxes and other extras. And cable providers usually reserve the best bundle pricing for people who sign a contract. The same goes for “streaming” offerings, such as Comcast’s Xfinity Flex.

The reason you want to cut cable in the first place remains. Like Hulu with Live TV, Sling TV and others, YouTube TV is contract-free, so you can cancel at any time. Streaming services also have other advantages over cable. They’re easier to watch on phones and tablets, for example. At $65 per month, however, you’ll have to be coming from a relatively expensive cable bill to realize substantial savings with YouTube TV.

youtube-tv03youtube-tv03

The service comes with a comprehensive program guide.

Sarah Tew/CNET

Should you get YouTube TV?

If price is no object, YouTube TV is my favorite live streaming service, with a huge array of entertainment options and one of the best DVR/search combos on the market. It offers more channels than anyone else and the inclusion of 5.1 surround is great for sports and movie fans alike. If you don’t want to be beholden to a traditional cable company it’s a great alternative.

That said, $65 a month could be a tough expenditure for some people, and yet without a contract to worry about, you are free to jump ship to a better deal at any time. That extra $20 on top is simply a bridge too far for so little 4K content, even if unlimited streams and DVR downloads are useful for extended families or travelers.

If you’re a hardcore cord-cutter and determined to save money, Sling TV Blue offers a compelling alternative, especially when paired with an antenna or an AirTV 2

Below you’ll find a comparison of the top 100 channels offered by a few of YouTube TV’s competitors. For more information and comparisons with additional services, check out the full article.

  • No = The channel isn’t available at all on that service.

Google Search and Maps will use machine learning to become more food-friendly helping people search for specific dishes or vibes, the company said at its Search On event on Wednesday.

When searching for shumai, shawarma or shakshuka in either the Google Search or Google Maps app, people can scroll down to find additional filters. These filters can include things such as vegan or spicy, eliminating the need to pull up a specific restaurant’s menu. Other dietary filters will be coming, but Google will start with vegetarian and vegan first.

Google says it’s using machine learning to find a restaurant’s vibe or what makes it special. A result might say a specific restaurant is “like walking into a friend’s living room.”

Google primarily makes money from ad sales, which is linked to Search, the company’s most popular product. With the rising popularity of TikTok, the short-form video app gives people quick glimpses into what an experience might actually be like. It’s why among younger groups, TikTok has become a search engine in itself. Last year, TikTok dethroned Google as the year’s most popular domain. It’s something Google is paying attention to and is why the company launched YouTube Shorts in 2020, its own short-form video competitor. Google will also begin integrating more imagery and video in search results.

Multisearch, the ability to search with images and text simultaneously, will also be extended for food. For example, a person can take a photo of a pastry they’re not aware of, and Google will find what it is. A person can then add “near me” and Maps will be able to find bakeries that carry it.

Google says it’s also tackling the fragmented menu problem when searching for what to eat. Sometimes menus are photos other people have taken, other times it’s a downloadable PDF. Google will use its Multitask Unified Model AI to create easy-to-read digital menus with up-to-date information.

The 2022 NFL season is underway. Week 2 began with the Chiefs taking down the Chargers in Amazon’s first Thursday Night Football telecast. This Sunday, however, you can find the NFL back on the more traditional stations on CBS, Fox and NBC before a doubleheader Monday night on ESPN wraps up the second weekend of football.

The most notable game on Sunday could be on Sunday Night Football as Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers look to get their first win of the 2022 campaign when they host the Chicago Bears at 8:20 p.m. ET (5:20 p.m. PT) on NBC.

Here’s what you need to know to watch and stream the opening game, and our recommendations for the best ways to watch the rest of the 2022 NFL season, including RedZone, week in and week out without cable.

What are my streaming options for NFL games in 2022?

Paying for cable is the easiest solution but not the cheapest. For cord-cutters looking to save some money, NFL football streaming options can get a bit complicated, with games played across three different days and nights each week on different channels and streaming services.

Most NFL games are played on Sunday, with a game each week on Thursday night and another each week on Monday night. On Sundays, games start at 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m. PT) and 4 p.m. ET (1 p.m. ET), with most AFC teams on CBS and most NFC teams on Fox.

Although the first Thursday night game was on NBC, the rest of the games for Thursday Night Football will be shown on Amazon Prime Video. Unlike last season, Prime Video is now the exclusive home to Thursday Night Football and the games are no longer available on Fox or NFL Network (though the games will be available on TV in teams’ local markets).

As in previous seasons, Monday Night Football games will be on ESPN. In addition, NFL Network will show three international games played in London and Munich this season.

All five of the live TV streaming services carry ESPN and Fox, and all but Sling TV carry CBS. All but DirecTV Stream carry NFL Network. For the games on CBS and Fox, keep in mind that not every service carries every local network, so check each one using the links below to make sure it carries CBS and Fox in your area.

In addition to Prime Video, there are three other streaming services that cord-cutting NFL fans should consider. The paid Premium plan of Paramount Plus will show CBS games on Sundays, and the paid Premium plan of Peacock will show NBC’s broadcasts of Sunday Night Football.

And then there is ESPN Plus, which will have an exclusive game in Week 8 when the Broncos take on the Jaguars in London.

Wait, there’s one more streaming service to consider this year. The NFL is launching a new streaming service for watching games on your phone or tablet — no casting to your TV. In past years, you could do this for free with the Yahoo Sports app, but now you’ll need to pay $5 a month or $40 for the season for the NFL Plus app. With it, you’ll be able to watch every local game on Sunday and the national games on Sunday, Monday and Thursday nights as well as the playoffs and Super Bowl — again, only on your phone or tablet.

Lastly, there’s NFL RedZone, a channel that springs to life each fall and shows live NFL action during the Sunday afternoon games. It pops in and out of the live games and attempts to show each touchdown scored in each game. RedZone is available as an add-on on four of the five major live TV streaming services — all but DirecTV Stream.

Best for everything: YouTube TV ($65)

YouTube TV logo on a phone in front of a TV.YouTube TV logo on a phone in front of a TV.

Sarah Tew/CNET

Our pick from the last two years remains our go-to choice in 2022.

At $65 per month each, YouTube TV checks all the NFL boxes. Local channels CBS, NBC and Fox are included in many markets, and ESPN and the NFL Network are also included so you can watch Sundays and Monday nights. The next best options are FuboTV and Hulu Plus Live TV; both offer the same channels as YouTube TV for NFL fans, but for $70 a month.

Want to follow your fantasy team with RedZone? That’s available on all three services as part of an add-on. If you’re a YouTube TV subscriber, you can add the $11 per month Sports Plus add-on by clicking on your profile and going to Settings, then the Membership tab. FuboTV subscribers can go into My Profile and choose Manage Add-ons to get its $11-per-month Sports Plus with NFL RedZone offering. And Hulu users can now add RedZone for $10 per month with its Sports add-on.

Both YouTube TV and FuboTV allow three people to watch at once (Hulu allows two live streams) and all three have apps on nearly every mobile device and major streaming platform, including Amazon Fire TV, Google TV, Roku and Apple TV.

While all three are largely similar, we like YouTube TV for its superior DVR — unlimited storage compared with 30 hours on FuboTV and 50 hours on Hulu. We also like YouTube TV because it gives you an option to stream in 4K for an extra $20 a month. FuboTV does, too, with its $80-a-month Elite plan. Keep in mind that only Fox and NBC offer 4K NFL broadcasts; CBS and ESPN do not.

See at YouTube TV

DirecTV Stream offers the main broadcast channels for NFL games, but it starts at $70 per month and lacks NFL Network and RedZone.

Sling TV’s Orange and Blue plan for $50 a month gets you ESPN and the NFL Network, and, in select major markets, Fox and/or NBC, but you’ll still lack CBS. You can also add RedZone for $11 per month with the Sports Extra add-on.

The cheapest way to stream NFL RedZone

A frequent fan-favorite method of following all the NFL action on Sundays, RedZone is a way to catch every big play around the league. The cheapest road to RedZone is to get Sling TV Blue for $35 per month and add the $11 per month Sports Extra add-on.

This option can also be streamed on a host of devices including iOS, Android, Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV and web browsers.

See at Sling TV

Note: If you only subscribe to Sling’s Orange package you won’t be able to get RedZone in Sports Extra. Your base package needs to be either Sling Blue or its larger Sling Blue Plus Orange bundle for you to be able to get RedZone as an add-on. If you choose the latter, the Sports Extra add-on is $15 per month as you will also get additional channels like the SEC Network, ACC Network and PAC 12 Network.

If you mainly plan to watch on a phone, you can also check out RedZone Mobile, which is in the NFL app. This is a separate subscription from NFL Plus and runs $35 for the season (which breaks down to around $7.78 per month for the roughly four-and-a-half months of regular season football). While this is one of the cheapest ways to get RedZone, be aware that — similar to NFL Plus — you will not be able to AirPlay or Chromecast it onto a larger screen and will need to watch on your phone.

Budget alternative for NFC fans in big cities: Sling Blue ($35) or an antenna ($20 one-time)

Sling Blue Orange 2020Sling Blue Orange 2020

Sarah Tew/CNET

Those looking to save some cash might want to check out Sling Blue for $35 a month. While it lacks ESPN, meaning you’ll miss out on Monday Night Football, in select markets you’ll be able to get Fox and NBC. The catch is that those markets are mainly in big cities, so if you live outside one of those areas, Sling Blue might not be for you.

You can also add RedZone through the company’s $11 per month Sports Extra add-on.

Fox broadcasts most NFC games on Sundays, while NBC has Sunday Night Football. CBS, which broadcasts the bulk of AFC games, isn’t included on Sling at all. But an antenna can fill those local channel gaps without a monthly charge.

Budget alternatives for AFC fans: Paramount Plus (or an antenna)

045-paramount-plus-launch-3-4-2021045-paramount-plus-launch-3-4-2021

Sarah Tew/CNET

There are some apps that offer CBS’ slate of Sunday AFC games live, including Paramount Plus’ Premium tier for $10 per month. Depending on where you live, however, your local CBS station (and those NFL games) might not be available. CBS offers livestreaming services in many markets; you can check for yourself if your area has live CBS streaming here.

An antenna is another option for getting CBS. And as we mentioned above, an over-the-air antenna connected to your TV provides another option, no streaming or monthly fee required, as long as you have good reception.

Thursday Night Football: Amazon Prime Video

In past years, Thursday Night Football games were shown on Prime Video but were also available on Fox or NFL Network. This year, starting Week 2, the games on Thursday nights will be available only on Prime Video, giving NFL fans more incentive than free two-day shipping to sign up for an Amazon Prime account for $15 a month or $139 a year. You can also subscribe only to Prime Video for $9 a month.

What about Sunday Ticket?

For one more season, NFL Sunday Ticket is still largely limited to DirecTV satellite subscribers. While that is expected to change in 2023, those who live in buildings that can’t add a satellite dish can already get a streaming version to watch football starting at $294 for its To Go package for the season, or $396 for a Max package that includes the RedZone channel (a student version is also available at a discount). You can check your address on the Sunday Ticket site. Both packages have a one-week free trial.

The problem here, however, is that even if you’re eligible, it doesn’t include local games. You can only watch Sunday games that aren’t being broadcast on CBS, Fox or NBC in your area. They also won’t be helpful come playoff time — as you’ll need your local stations and ESPN to catch all those games.

YouTube TV: $65

Best for everything

For $65 a month, you’ll get all the major football channels with YouTube TV. Plus, RedZone is available for an extra $11 per month. Plug in your ZIP code on YouTube TV’s welcome page to see which local networks are available in your area.

Sling TV Blue: $35

Best for tighter budgets

Sling TV’s $35-a-month Blue plan includes NBC, Fox and the NFL Network. Enter your address here to see which local channels are available where you live. NFL RedZone is also available for an extra $11 per month.

Note: This version of Sling TV does not include ESPN. For that, you’ll need to switch to the similarly priced Orange plan or go for the combined $50 per month Orange and Blue bundle. With the combined plan, RedZone is an extra $15 per month.

Cheap alternative for AFC fans

Those looking for CBS games will be able to stream them on Paramount Plus with its $10 per month Premium tier. You can check for yourself if your area has live CBS streaming here.

Amazon Prime Video: $9

Thursday Night only (starting Sept. 15)

Thursday Night games, starting with Week 2, will be available only on Amazon Prime Video. For millions of Amazon Prime subscribers, the Prime Video channel is already included at no extra cost. But if you’re not a subscriber, it might be worth it to shell out the $9 a month for the stand-alone TV service fee.

Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers began their 2022 campaign with a win Sunday night in Dallas. In Week 2 they will visit the New Orleans Saints, who are similarly undefeated after an improbable fourth-quarter comeback against the Atlanta Falcons.

The game will be shown on Fox in the Tampa and New Orleans areas on live TV streaming services, but there may be cases where you’re blocked because of an internet location glitch or just want an added layer of privacy for streaming. There’s an option that doesn’t require subscribing to something like NFL Sunday Ticket or NFL Plus, or searching the internet for a sketchy website: a virtual private network, or VPN.

Buccaneers vs. Saints: When and where?

For week 2 of the NFL season, the Bucs are taking on the Saints at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT. The game is set to take place in New Orleans at Caesars Superdome.

How to watch the Bucs vs. Saints game online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the game locally due to incorrectly applied blackout restrictions, you may need a different way to watch the game and that’s where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds on game day by encrypting your traffic, and it’s also a great idea for when you may be traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you’re able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the game. So if your internet provider or mobile carrier has stuck you with an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can correct that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, non-blackout area. Most VPNs, like our Editors’ Choice ExpressVPN, make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US and Canada, as long as you’ve got a legitimate subscription to the service you’re streaming. Of course you should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks. Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

Livestream the Bucs vs. Saints game in the US

This week’s Buccaneers vs. Saints game is on Fox, so in addition to a VPN you’ll need a live TV streaming service that carries a local Fox affiliate that is broadcasting the game. The least expensive such service is Sling TV Blue. You’ll need to be subscribed to Sling Blue to be able to watch the game, and you’ll need to switch your VPN to the Tampa Bay area (note that Sling Blue doesn’t have a local New Orleans Fox affiliate, so Tampa Bay is your only option).

Sling/CNET

Sling TV Blue

Carries the Tampa Bay Fox affiliate (WTVT)

Among the live TV streaming services that carry local Fox stations, the cheapest is Sling TV Blue at $35 per month. Note that Sling is currently running a promotion where the first month of service is half-price ($17.50) for new subscribers.

One important caveat: In our experience, Fox local affiliates will only be available if your billing address is in one of the 18 metropolitan areas covered in Sling’s agreement. If you’re outside of one of these areas, you’re probably better off going with one of the alternate services listed below.

$35 at Sling TV

Numerous other live TV streaming services carry local Fox stations as well, namely YouTube TV, Hulu Plus Live TV, DirecTV Stream and FuboTV. They all cost more than Sling TV, but they also carry more channels, including football-specific channels like ESPN, NFL Network and/or RedZone. Check out our live TV streaming channel guide for details.

Quick tips

  • As noted above, Sling Blue is only an option if and when the ability to get Fox local affiliates is active on your account. You may want to verify that your billing address is eligible for that option before committing your credit card.
  • With three variables at play — your ISP, video streaming provider and VPN — experience and success may vary. Our Fox-enabled Sling account worked on the first try on a PC, as did YouTube TV on a PC and Mac. But YouTube TV on our iPhone wouldn’t show different local stations even when the VPN was active.
  • Tampa isn’t a default option for ExpressVPN, but it’s available using the “search for city or country” option.

The NASCAR playoffs will be broadcast on NBC and USA Network. If you don’t have a cable or satellite TV subscription, you can watch the race with a live TV service. The good news for race fans is that NBC and USA Network are available on each streaming service. The catch is that not every service carries every local network, so check each one using the links below to make sure it carries NBC in your area.

If you live in an area with good reception, you can watch races broadcast on NBC for free on over-the-air broadcast channels just by attaching an affordable (under $30) indoor antenna to nearly any TV.

Even if you take out Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney Plus, you’re still left with what seems like an endless supply of streaming services. Yes, it’s become more convenient than ever to watch movies, but thanks to the sheer amount of choice, it’s also become strangely complicated. Finding out where movies are streaming is one headache, while the mounting number of monthly subscriptions is another — and don’t forget the dent in your wallet it creates. It can be a real pain in the neck.

Thankfully, there are still plenty of services out there that can help keep you entertained without spending a dime. Here are 10 services that offer totally free, totally legal movies you can watch on smart TVs, media streamers and mobile devices. Some offer TV shows as well. Just be ready to sit through some commercials before streaming movies, because that’s how most of these services pay the bills. And don’t expect the option to download free movies for offline viewing. At present, only Hoopla allows you to do that.

Take note: Because selections change regularly, not all the titles listed here may still be available, but we’ll try to keep it up to date.

10 best free movie and TV streaming services

Crackle

Crackle

Sony Crackle is an ad-supported streaming service, one that offers both movies and TV shows — including some original content and web series. It’s available on a wide variety of devices and doesn’t even require you to set up an account to watch free movies online, though doing so enables you to save favorites, get recommendations and resume playback if you switch between devices.

Top picks: The Wailing, Coherence

See at Crackle

IMDb

IMDb TV

This streaming service, formerly known as FreeDrive, is part of IMDb, the Internet Movie Database, which is owned by Amazon. In other words, IMDb TV is Amazon’s way of offering ad-supported movie streaming independent of Amazon Prime. And IMDb TV isn’t limited to movies; there are TV episodes available as well. Unfortunately, there’s a viewing limitation: The IMDb TV service can be accessed only on PCs and within Prime Video and IMDb apps.

Top picks: Nightcrawler, Napoleon Dynamite, Lost in Translation (and shout-outs for TV series Lost and Mad Men)

Hoopla

Hoopla

Got a library card? Check to see if your library has partnered with Hoopla. This digital-media service allows you to check out all kinds of stuff — including movies. When you “borrow” one, you have 72 hours in which to watch it. Your library determines the total number of movies you can borrow each month.

Surprisingly, Hoopla’s mobile apps offer not only streaming, but also a download option for offline viewing.

Top picks: Ex Machina, Raising Arizona and What We Do in the Shadows

Internet Archive

The Internet Archive is home to all things public domain, including thousands of feature-length movies. Perhaps unsurprisingly, there’s no cost to use the service, nor do you need an account (though you can create one if you want to mark favorites and such).

“Public domain” is code for “old” or “mostly black-and-white,” making this the place for folks interested strictly in classic movies. Thus you’ll find the likes of His Girl Friday, Plan 9 from Outer Space and Gulliver’s Travels. The archive exists only on the web, though, so you’ll need a browser to access it. (Most mobile browsers should work.)

Kanopy

Kanopy

If your library doesn’t offer Hoopla, maybe it has Kanopy? This commercial-free (yay!) service, which began life in Australia, has made its way to thousands of college campuses worldwide and, more recently, various US libraries. Check the website to see if your library has it — and ask for it if it doesn’t.

Kanopy offers some mainstream stuff, but also a large selection of indie films and documentaries from the likes of PBS and The Great Courses. Its library also includes titles from the esteemed Criterion Collection, which is code for “films.” There’s also a new Kanopy Kids section with loads of family-friendly content.

Top picks: Memento, In the Mood for Love and Lady Bird

Peacock

A newcomer to this list, Peacock is NBC’s streaming service — and its free tier is surprisingly generous, offering not only the obvious (TV shows) but also some movies you won’t find anywhere else. You’ll have to endure commercial interruptions, of course, but there’s a countdown timer so you’ll know if there’s time to run to the bathroom.

Top picks:  Casino, In Bruges, Jurassic Park, Love Actually, Zombieland

Pluto

Pluto TV

Pluto began life as a live streaming service that offered multiple “channels” of content — including a large selection of CNET video. It has since been purchased by Viacom, which previously owned CNET. Although it seems to be expanding more into the live TV space, with a growing number of news and sports channels, it’s also home to plenty of on-demand free movies.

Top picks:  Drive, The Way of the Dragon, The Terminator and Hot Rod

See at Pluto TV

Roku

The Roku Channel

The Roku Channel isn’t exclusively a free movie provider, but also an aggregator of new and existing no-cost content. Thus, don’t be surprised if there’s some overlap with some of the free movies available on other services. You’ll find movies from Roku partners such as Lionsgate, MGM, Sony and Warner, along with free content from existing Roku channels such as FilmRise, Popcornflix and Vidmark.

Needless to say, the channel is available on Roku TVs and devices, but it’s accessible in desktop web browsers, on Amazon Fire TV streamers and in app form as well.

Top picks: Caddyshack, When Harry Met Sally and Halloween

See at Roku

Tubi

Tubi TV

Home to thousands of free commercial movies (though definitely not commercial-free), Tubi TV’s streaming platform offers content from studios including Lionsgate, MGM and Paramount. To help separate the wheat from the chaff, check out these two categories: Highly Rated on Rotten Tomatoes and Not on Netflix.

Top picks: Fight Club, I Am Not Your Negro, Stalag 17

See at Tubi TV

Vudu

Vudu

Walmart’s Vudu video service has been consistently expanding its ad-supported section, which lets you choose from a generous selection of Hollywood movies (mostly older titles, alas) to watch at no charge. To watch free movies online, you’ll need a Vudu account, but it’s free to set one up.

The first week of the NFL season is in the books. The best performance of the first week belongs to the Chiefs, who looked dominant against the Cardinals as Patrick Mahomes threw for five touchdowns and didn’t seem to miss a beat without Tyreek Hill. The Chargers kept pace in the AFC West by knocking off the Raiders, with Justin Herbert tossing three touchdowns. With two of the best QBs in the game, the Chiefs and Chargers can score points in bunches. They meet on Thursday Night Football on Amazon’s Prime Video in what looks to be the best matchup of the entire week 2 slate.

Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. ET (5:15 p.m. PT) tonight with the game streaming nationally on Prime Video and for free on Twitch. Here’s how to watch the Chiefs-Chargers game this evening, as well as the rest of the NFL season, without cable.

Thursday Night Football Streaming: Amazon Prime Video, Twitch and NFL Plus

In past years, Thursday Night Football games were shown on Prime Video but were also available on Fox or NFL Network. This year, starting in Week 2, the games on Thursday nights will be available nationally on Amazon’s platforms like Prime Video, giving NFL fans more incentive than free two-day shipping to sign up for an Amazon Prime account for $15 a month or $139 a year. You can also subscribe only to Prime Video for $9 a month.

While Amazon is adding a host of additional features for its Prime Video subscribers (including Alexa and X-Ray integration and alternative broadcasts), you don’t need Amazon Prime or Prime Video subscription to watch the game.

Fans in the local market of each team playing on Thursday night will be able to watch on an over-the-air (OTA) station, while those who don’t pay for either of Amazon’s services can watch for free on Prime Video’s Twitch channel (Twitch is also owned by Amazon).

If you subscribe to NFL Plus, the league’s $5 per month streaming service, you can also stream the game without subscribing to Prime or Prime Video. Note that NFL Plus viewing is limited to watching on just a phone or tablet, not on a computer or TV.

Can I watch Thursday Night Football on local TV?

You can. Front Office Sports’ A.J. Perez has put together a handy list of which local channels in which market will broadcast Thursday Night Football games when their respective teams are playing. For Week 2, that is KSHB 41 in Kansas City and KTTV 11 in Los Angeles.

Although the first Thursday night game was on NBC, as mentioned above the rest of the games for Thursday Night Football will be shown on Amazon’s Prime Video and Twitch platforms.

NFL RedZone shows every touchdown scored during the Sunday afternoon games each week.

Rob Carr/Getty Images

Amazon Prime Video: $9

Thursday Night Football only

Thursday Night games, starting with Week 2, will be available only on Amazon Prime Video (plus the local TV stations in the market of each team playing). For millions of Amazon Prime subscribers, the Prime Video channel is already included at no extra cost. But if you’re not a subscriber, it might be worth it to shell out the $9 a month for the stand-alone TV service fee.

On the first Sunday of the NFL season, the Vikings beat the Packers, the Saints edged the Falcons and the Eagles held on against the Lions. In the AFC, the Chargers won against the Raiders, the Dolphins clipped the Patriots and the Steelers beat the Bengals in overtime in the craziest game of the day. In cross-conference action, the Chiefs looked dominant against the Cardinals, the Giants edged the Titans and the Browns squeaked by the Panthers on a last-second 58-yard field goal by their rookie kicker. On Sunday night, the Buccaneers topped the Cowboys.

Week 1 concludes tonight in Seattle with the Seahawks hosting the Broncos. After playing 10 years for the Seahawks, quarterback Russell Wilson will be on the opposing sidelines in his debut as a Denver Bronco. Taking over behind center for the Seahawks is Jets castoff Geno Smith.

After years calling games on Fox, Joe Buck and Troy Aikman will be in the booth this season for ESPN’s Monday Night Football broadcasts. And the Manning brothers are back with year 2 of the ManningCast, their alternative broadcast on ESPN2 and ESPN Plus. Brothers Peyton and Eli and assorted guests will call 10 Monday Night Football games this season, starting with week 1 in Seattle.

Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. ET (5:15 p.m. PT) on ESPN and ABC. Here’s how to watch tonight’s action, as well as the rest of the NFL season, without cable.
