A video of Meta’s next virtual reality headset may have surfaced online Sunday. The clip of the purported headset, posted to Facebook by video creator Zectaruiz Gaming, shows off the design and packaging of a “Meta Quest Pro.”

The headset appears to resemble Project Cambria, Meta’s next virtual reality headset previously teased by CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The video shows a black plastic headset and two controllers being removed from its packaging. The headset has three cameras on the front, while the controllers are shown without their hollowed-out loop design.

The video comes one month ahead of Meta Connect, the company’s annual virtual reality conference on Oct. 11. Project Cambria is expected to debut at this event with a higher price tag and more advanced specs than Meta’s current headset, the Meta Quest 2

Meta didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Meta Connect, the tech giant’s annual virtual reality conference, will take place on Oct. 11 this year, the company said on Tuesday. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the event in a Facebook post, saying simply “See you at Meta Connect on Oct 11.”

The site for the virtual event teases that people will be able to “discover how the metaverse is being built by many and why collaboration is the key to it all.” Meta said it’ll also offer a look at progress the company has made as well as at what’s to come in the near and far future.

At last year’s event, Zuckerberg revealed his company’s new name, Meta, a nod to its focus on building the metaverse. “This is the next chapter of our work, and, we believe, for the internet overall,” Zuckerberg said at the time.

Zuckerberg also teased Project Cambria, the company’s next virtual reality headset, which is expected to be more advanced and more expensive. In August, Zuckerberg said that the headset would come out in October and that more details would be revealed at Connect.

The virtual event will be livestreamed on the Reality Labs Facebook page at 7 a.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT on Oct. 11.

Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has agreed to a $37.5 million settlement to resolve a lawsuit accusing the company of violating users’ privacy by tracking their movements without permission.

Plaintiffs in Lundy et al vs. Meta Platforms claim the social media platform collected location data even when users turned off their phones’ location services setting, violating both California law and Facebook’s own privacy policies.

The settlement, filed Aug. 22 in San Francisco federal court, still needs final approval by a judge before eligible users can receive their share of any cash payout.

Meta didn’t respond to a request for comment on the case. In court papers, however, it said agreeing to the deal was not an admission of any wrongdoing. The company previously agreed to a $90 million settlement in June following accusations it tracked users’ online activity on other sites even after they logged off Facebook. Earlier this year, Meta settled a $650 million class action case claiming Facebook’s facial recognition scans violated Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act. Read on to find out what Facebook’s location tracking case is about, who is eligible for a payment and how to claim money. For more on class action lawsuits, see if you’re eligible for a payout from T-Mobile’s $350 million data breach settlement, AT&T’s $14 million hidden-fee case or Roundup weed killer’s $45 million settlement

What is Facebook accused of?

A class action lawsuit filed in 2018 in the US District Court’s Northern District of California accuses Meta of recording Facebook users’ physical location without permission, using their IP address to infer their position in order to serve them targeted ads.

“Facebook has been covertly obtaining detailed location information from users regardless of whether a user has opted in or opted out on his or her device,” the complaint read. It wasn’t until the EU began enforcing the wide-ranging General Data Protection Regulation in 2018 that Facebook “realized that it had to come clean about its data collection practices in its data policy,” according to the complaint, which stated Facebook had previously specifically claimed that collection of any location information was opt-in.

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg told Congress in 2018 that the company used shared location data “to help advertisers reach people in particular areas.”

“For example, if people have shared their device locations with Facebook or checked into a specific restaurant, we can show them ads from an advertiser that wants to promote its services in their area or from the restaurant [itself],” he said.

Who’s eligible for money in the location tracking settlement?

A preliminary settlement was filed in San Francisco federal court on Aug. 22. If it receives final approval from a judge, the settlement will cover anyone with a Facebook account since Jan 30, 2015.

How much could I get?

It’s not clear how much individual class members would receive yet, though 30% of the proposed settlement could go to the plaintiffs’ legal fees, according to court documents.

How would eligible Facebook users get paid?

Eligible class members will be able to file a claim via a yet-to-be-launched settlement website, according to the filing, and then receive payment by check or direct deposit.

The Oculus Quest 2 (now called Meta Quest 2) has become a surprisingly successful virtual reality headset and remains our favorite VR device despite being two years old and suddenly more expensive. What will Meta, the former Facebook, do for its encore? The company is expected to release four new headsets over the next few years, but the next on deck is coming this October, according to an interview with Meta head Mark Zuckerberg on Joe Rogan’s podcast.

The headset, called “Project Cambria,” was announced last year. Don’t expect it to be a true sequel to the Quest 2, though. Instead, it should be a Quest Pro much like what Mark Zuckerberg told CNET back in 2021.

Project Cambria looks to be a far more expensive and advanced sort of AR/VR hybrid headset, a bridge device that could be an amazing VR device, but could also enable mixed reality combining video from the real world with VR via improved cameras.

Cambria will also add new sensor technology (notably, eye tracking and face tracking) that could introduce new possibilities for interacting in VR and animating your avatar. But that eye tracking brings questions about data privacy, too.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg showing a brief glimpse of the next-gen headset via Facebook.

Facebook

Stand-alone, like the Quest 2

Yes, Cambria looks to be a stand-alone device like Quest 2. But, also like Quest 2, expect it to optionally connect to PCs and, to some extent, phones. Early reported design mockups show a design that seems smaller than the Quest 2, but a larger battery could mean more weight. Meta has already confirmed the headset will be more compact where the lenses meet the face, using “pancake lenses” that can compress the distance needed to create convincing 3D effects.

The larger battery seems like it could sit on the back of the headset, creating a design that looks more like Microsoft’s Hololens 2, an augmented reality headset, than Meta’s existing Oculus VR goggles. VR devices like the HTC Vive Focus 3 (and Meta’s own battery strap accessory for Quest 2) put batteries on the back of the headset, too.

While recent reports like those from The Information call Cambria a “laptop for your face,” suggesting more self-contained power, expect the headset to connect with computers for more powerful applications much like the Quest 2 can do right now.

More sensors

Mark Zuckerberg, in a conversation with CNET last year, told me that a pro version of the Quest would focus on more sensor technology. Eye and face tracking are already known, but it’s possible that Cambria will allow for more health and fitness tracking. Fitness has been a major focus for Meta’s VR platforms, and the company’s already acquired a subscription fitness service that measures heart rate through a paired Apple Watch. (The Oculus Move app syncs with Apple Health.) Meta is also reportedly working on its own smartwatch.

How will it mix reality?

Project Cambria’s improved external cameras will capture passthrough color video, showing it on the headset’s internal display. The Quest 2 can “see through” and show the outside world, too, but in a grainy black and white video feed. The Quest 2 overlays some VR with this feed, like room boundaries, creating a type of mixed reality. Expect Meta Cambria to do this far more realistically.

Mark Zuckerberg gave a brief demo of the headset’s possibilities back in May via Facebook.

I’ve already tried one example of this tech on a very high-end VR headset made by a Finnish company called Varjo. The Varjo XR-3 uses lidar and cameras to scan the real world; it then layers VR into it in a way that can look almost as convincing as the effects in AR headsets made by Microsoft and Magic Leap. I’d expect Meta Cambria to try for something very similar.

Meta’s aspirations for future AR glasses haven’t been realized yet, but the Cambria could end up being a toolkit for developers to make AR-type experiences that could also use hand (and eye) tracking.

Another glimpse of Project Cambria.Another glimpse of Project Cambria.

Facebook’s next VR headset will have face tracking and eye tracking.

Facebook

How will eye tracking work?

We don’t know the specifics, but most eye tracking in VR works in a similar way: Infrared cameras measure eye movement, while some trackers also capture images of your eye. Eye tracking does a few pretty useful things: Foveated rendering can create better graphics with less processing power by only showing the highest-res details where the fovea of your eyes is looking, potentially meaning better battery life or performance in a smaller headset.

Eye tracking can also be used to create more realistic eye contact for avatars, and to combine with hand tracking and controllers to improve control accuracy. It could even mean better accessibility for people who don’t have full mobility, using only eye controls to operate the VR interface.

Meta looks to be adding face tracking cameras as well as eye tracking, which could be used to map emotions and facial expressions into avatars. But all of this tracking comes with additional privacy questions. While Meta has promised transparency and limits to how tracking data is used, Facebook’s history of user data abuse leaves a lot of concerns.

Mark Zuckerberg avatar in VRMark Zuckerberg avatar in VR

Mark Zuckerberg promises new avatars coming soon: will they be be more expressive, or more awkward?

Meta

Better avatars, maybe?

Zuckerberg promises that this headset will animate avatars more realistically, and could come along with upgraded Meta avatars. Mark Zuckerberg’s latest cartoonish avatar in Horizon Worlds became a widely mocked meme, but will eye tracking and better graphics make interactions feel better than what’s currently possible? Meta’s going to make this a big part of Cambria’s efforts, but how the next headset’s upgraded avatar controls interface with the rest of Quest 2 owners isn’t clear.

Odds are, it won’t be as much of a game console

If the Cambria headset is more than $800, there’s no way it will be as popular as the Quest 2 is now. Meta seems to be hinting that’s not the point of Cambria, which means that game developers may not be as focused on the new hardware.

Facebook has a history of funding lots of gaming and art projects on its VR platforms, but it sounds like Cambria may not be about debuting new games. Instead, Meta will likely focus on a wide range of business, training, fitness and AR-crossover apps to help build its metaverse visions. In that sense, current Quest 2 owners might already have the best VR game console for a while (until the PlayStation VR 2 arrives in 2023, at least).

The Information’s latest report on the Meta Cambria reinforces that this headset’s greatest strengths — better display resolution, eye tracking, passthrough mixed reality — will be tools to advance Meta’s vision for work and the future of VR. Look to competing high-end VR and AR products like the Vive Focus 3, Hololens 2 and Varjo’s headsets, where professional uses are the clear goal. Meta’s had great success appealing to gamers, but it’ll have a harder time convincing workplaces to adopt its tech.

The Quest 2 and controllersThe Quest 2 and controllers

The Quest 2, released in 2020, is still one of our favorite headsets. It may not get replaced until 2023.

Scott Stein/CNET

Should you buy a Quest 2 now or wait for Cambria (or a future Quest 3)?

A true successor to the Quest 2 may not happen until 2023, based on recent reports. That Quest 3 is expected to be a headset that would compete at the same price as the Quest 2, and possibly replace it, but not this year. Cambria, however, is not expected to be that headset. If the Cambria headset is as high-priced as Meta says it is, it probably won’t even be competing with the Quest 2 for most shoppers. Instead, it may be more about pushing more advanced features (eye tracking, mixed reality, better display quality) that could eventually trickle down into more affordable products later.

Keep the concepts of “Cambria” and “Quest 3” separate in your head, and it’ll help you plan your buying decisions. Cambria may only end up appealing to enthusiast and pro users with money to spend. I don’t expect any VR headset to be able to compete with Quest 2’s $400 price anytime soon, except for maybe Tiktok parent company ByteDance’s upcoming Pico headset.

The Quest 2 is still a fantastic headset for its price, and Meta keeps updating the software with new features regularly. Unless you’re a professional eager for a top-end headset at any price, you probably don’t need to wait for whatever Cambria ends up becoming later this year. However, if you have a PlayStation 5, you might want to wait and see what the PlayStation VR 2 is like.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg talked a lot about virtual reality when he appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience Thursday. He also confirmed that his company’s new virtual reality headset, called Project Cambria, will be launching soon.

Zuckerberg said the headset will come out in October and that more will be revealed at the company’s Connect event. Meta has yet to announce the date of the show.

Rogan — a longtime fan of the Oculus hardware — gave his impression about the new hardware, saying it would track his eyes and facial movements that would then show up on his avatar. Zuckerberg called this feature “social presence” that would convey nonverbal communication in VR such as eye contact or smiling.

Project Cambria is the next evolution of Meta’s VR hardware, announced in 2021. It will have the eye-tracking sensor as Rogan mentioned and will be a stand-alone device like the Meta Quest 2. There also could be more sensor technology in the new device that could be used for other activities such as health and fitness.

The next Meta VR headset after Quest 2 will be something called, for now, Project Cambria. It’s a mixed reality-focused headset arriving sometime in 2022, and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg just demonstrated for the first time how it’ll work.

Unlike AR headsets like the HoloLens 2 and the Magic Leap 2, which have transparent lenses and layer semitransparent holographic images on top, Meta Cambria is a VR headset that uses more advanced cameras to pass color video through and blend VR into the feed. The existing Quest 2 can do this to some extent, but with grainy black-and-white video. Meta Cambria will provide higher-res color video to make the experience more realistic and useful.

First look at mixed reality on our next headset codenamed Project Cambria. This demo was created using Presence Platform, which we built to help developers build mixed reality experiences that blend physical and virtual worlds. The demo, called “The World Beyond,” will be available on App Lab soon. It’s even better with full color passthrough and the other advanced technologies we’re adding to Project Cambria. More details soon.

Posted by Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday, May 12, 2022

The technology has existed before, but in high-end professional headsets. I tried the Varjo XR-3, a lidar-equipped VR device that also blended video feeds with VR to achieve surprisingly convincing AR effects.

Meta’s Next VR Headset: Should You Get a Quest 2 or Wait?

Meta seems to be angling for the Cambria headset to be used for professional and work purposes. Zuckerberg also hints at its use for fitness (putting trainers in your room) and for extending virtual monitors for work. In a conversation with CNET last year, Zuckerberg told us that this pro-focused headset would also help build out its vision of a work metaverse. Meanwhile, Meta will be enabling development of mixed reality apps through what it calls its Presence Platform, which will allow experiences to be cross-developed for Quest 2 and the next-gen headset. Quest 2 can do mixed reality, although in lower-quality form, with the idea that these apps will eventually work on Cambria in higher quality when it releases.

Zuckerberg also announced that a demo mixed-reality app, called The World Beyond, will be available soon for download on the Quest 2’s App Lab. The app, which was briefly teased at last year’s Connect conference, looks like a way to explore what mixed reality could do on VR headsets.

Meta has turned off augmented reality filters for Facebook and Instagram in Texas and Illinois due to facial recognition and privacy laws in those states.

Although Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, said its AR technology is “not facial recognition,” it’s temporarily shutting down its AR filters and avatars in both states to prevent “meritless and distracting litigation.” The decision comes a day after a settlement was reached in an ACLU lawsuit filed in Illinois against Clearview AI, a facial recognition company that was selling its database to private companies.

Meta said it will create an opt-in experience to bring those AR effects back to its platforms soon. AR effects are also turned off across Messenger, Messenger Kids, Facebook and Portal in both Texas and Illinois.

The company maintains that the tech it uses to create its AR effects and applications isn’t facial recognition technology and isn’t used for identification purposes.

“The technology we use to power augmented reality effects like avatars and filters is not facial recognition or any technology covered by the Texas and Illinois laws, and is not used to identify anyone,” Meta said in a statement. The company shut down its Face recognition system last year, erasing the face scan data of more than 1 billion users.

Facebook has faced scrutiny over its facial recognition technology in recent years, with a judge awarding a landmark $650 million settlement in favor of users in a class-action suit in Illinois last year. Texas is also suing the social media giant over its use of facial recognition technology, asserting that it didn’t appropriately obtain consent for Texans’ biometric data, which violates the state’s privacy laws.

WhatsApp is adding a new way for users to gather and chat with Communities, which is intended for organizations like schools and neighborhoods to coordinate and share media.

Communities are WhatsApp’s answer to Telegram’s massive Groups and Channels, and while it’s unclear how many users can join a Community, they won’t be as much as the “hundreds of thousands of people” in chats for other users, according to an official WhatsApp post on Thursday. Communities will be inherently private and end-to-end encrypted.

WhatsApp is adding emoji message reactions.

Alongside Communities, WhatsApp is adding modern features that have been in rival messaging apps for awhile, like emoji reactions and expanding voice calls to 32 people, up from eight participants before. Users can share even bigger files and media now, with an expanded file size cap of 2 GB, up from 100 MB previously. And group admins will now be able to remove messages from everyone’s chats if, say, someone says something problematic.

The above features will be rolling out to users in the coming weeks, while it’s less clear when Communities will be added to WhatsApp — they will “start rolling this out slowly,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a post Thursday. But he also noted that community messaging (whether branded as Communities or otherwise) will be coming to Messenger, Facebook and Instagram at some point as well.

WhatsApp’s Community chat and message reaction features come after weeks of additions to the chat app. WhatsApp has been rolling out a multidevice feature that lets you text from other devices when your phone is off and improvements to its voice message feature.

I’ve wanted iPads and Macs to fuse for years. They’re still separate in 2022. But a common thread runs through both: Literally, it’s the cursor that jumps between my iPad and MacBook on my desk right now.

Apple’s Universal Control, a much-anticipated feature that’s live as a beta in iPadOS 15.4 and MacOS 12.3, is uncanny at times, invisible at others. And sometimes it doesn’t work at all.

The feature allows a Mac keyboard and trackpad/mouse to also control a nearby iPad — or vice versa, if you’re using an iPad keyboard or accessory. Basically, it allows any nearby keyboard, seemingly, to control all devices. Hence, Universal Control. I’ve tried it on a 12-inch iPad Pro and the latest iPad Air so far, alongside an M1 MacBook Air.

The idea isn’t that wild in concept, but trying it out does feel like the most magical thing I’ve seen in recent versions of iPadOS. My MacBook cursor, when approaching the edge of my display, just leaps off and enters the iPad. Yes, just like you can do with any other connected secondary monitor.

What makes it uncanny is that iPadOS runs differently. Over in iPad-Land, the cursor becomes larger and morphs into the apps it hovers near. It mimics how trackpads and keyboards and mice already work on iPadOS.

Before this, Apple already had Sidecar, which also let iPads act as Pencil-compatible second screens for Macs. Universal Control feels like another step. And weirdly, of all things this relationship reminds me of right now, it makes me think of VR… and what Meta has been doing with its Quest headsets and computers.

Meta’s own Horizon Workrooms app, and a handful of other apps, can pair with a MacBook or a few other keyboards to make it feel like your device has suddenly leapt into your VR headset. In Horizon Workrooms, a computer can control VR. Or, your VR headset can interface with your computer desktop and become a head-worn second screen.

With all of Apple’s expected visions of AR, including a reported headset sometime in the next year, being able to remotely access and dovetail devices will be critical. In fact, cross-device relationships are at the heart of what the current metaverse hype cycle is all about. But, even if you don’t ever wear an Apple VR/AR headset, expanding the ways that iPhones, iPads, Macs and Apple TVs feel like interlinked nodes of one ambient super-device seems like the way forward. Not just for Apple, but for tech in general.

Universal, but not always intuitive

Universal Control isn’t intuitive to set up, though. It doesn’t “just work” when you update your OS. Instead, you need to make sure both devices have Bluetooth on, are on the same Wi-Fi network, are near each other and have some particular settings toggled on. For the Mac, in Display settings, Universal Control has three particular settings that need to be checked off, all listed as “beta” features, allowing the Mac to have its cursor/keyboard extend, push through the edge of the display and reconnect to a nearby device. You can add the iPad as a display after that, and rearrange the two displays like any set of monitors with a Mac. The iPad needs to have “cursor and keyboard (beta)” enabled in the Airplay and Handoff part of settings, too.

After that, it seems to work, but sometimes I find when I wake devices up from sleep they don’t automatically seem to activate. I’m still getting used to it. Also, it’s a beta feature. And while the MacBook Air’s trackpad seems to work fine on the iPad Pro, the iPad Pro’s Magic Keyboard trackpad seems to track slowly on the Mac.

But, is it fun to leap across both devices with one keyboard and trackpad? Yes, yes it is. And sometimes, controlling the iPad or Mac from the other device, it feels like mind-reading. Or remote telepresence. And with a monitor connected to the MacBook Air, plus the iPad nearby, it’s now a three-screen system of sorts that I control with one keyboard/trackpad.

I still think iPadOS should evolve into MacOS or add a Mac layer, especially for pro-level iPads. Macs are overdue for some touchscreen experiences, too. While Universal Control doesn’t do that, it makes the devices feel so much more connected. I can even bring some things across the divide: A file can be dragged across from my Mac desktop, but it needs to land in a particular app to finish transferring (like Apple’s iPadOS Files app). Yet, I can’t drag windows or apps or browser tabs with me, though, like I always do on monitors with the Mac. So close, and yet so far.

iPads still don’t extend to other monitors except with a few apps. But what if they did? And what if iPads ran an OS ecosystem similar to Macs? Complete the journey, Apple, and revamp iPadOS at WWDC this year. The pieces are all there. The job just needs to be finished. Let these worlds merge, because the walls are already growing thinner than ever.

NFTs could be coming to Instagram in the next several months, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said during a talk at SXSW.

“I’m not ready to announce exactly what that’s going to be today, but over the next several months, [you’ll get] the ability to bring some of your NFTs in, and hopefully over time be able to mint things within that environment,” he said, describing the future of NFTs, or nonfungible tokens, on the photo-sharing platform.

Zuckerberg was speaking via video at SXSW on Tuesday, in conversation with Daymond John, founder and CEO of Fubu, and one of the sharks on ABC’s Shark Tank.

Instagram wouldn’t be the first social network to equip its platform with the trendy digital assets, which are tied to a blockchain for their identity. Twitter made its entrance into NFT land in January, letting Twitter Blue subscribers display their NFTs as profile pics.

Apart from NFTs, Zuckerberg talked about the metaverse and reaffirmed the company’s confidence in the concept.

“The future belongs to the people who believe in it more than others,” he said.

He touched on a variety of issues facing the metaverse, very broadly defined as a digital world (or worlds) that builds off the internet, via technology including smartphones, VR headsets and AR glasses, and that will be a place to socialize, work and shop.

One of them, he said, is being conscious that the tech being built now will improve over time.

Zuckerberg also talked about need to create avatars that people can relate to and that will represent them, not just in terms of skin color and body shape, but also the inclusion of things like wheelchairs and hearing aids.

“The question is, ‘Do I see myself in this? And is this a place I want to invest?'” he said.

For Zuckerberg, the answer is clearly yes. So much so, that the company he founded — Facebook — changed its name in October to Meta. “This is the next chapter of our work, and, we believe, for the internet overall,” Zuckerberg said at the Facebook Connect event at the time.

At SXSW, he again noted that he believes the metaverse will end up being the most important part of what Meta does.

There’s still a lengthy road ahead before these digital worlds become functional or widespread. At Mobile World Congress in February, Zuckerberg talked about how the metaverse will require connectivity infrastructure that can support the technology as it progresses, and how it’s going to take collaboration with various partners to make that happen.

Moving your digital goods

He underlined this theme at SXSW, touching on how people should be able to take the digital goods they’ve purchased from digital place to digital place — like a sweatshirt for an avatar.

“It’s not that useful for people to buy their clothing in one game or one experience but they can’t bring it to another one,” he said. “Then they might not buy as much stuff, which means that there will be a smaller creator economy for everyone.”

Though it didn’t come up at SXSW, Meta will also have to face the challenge of old problems in a new digital form — harassment in virtual reality

Zuckerberg also ran through a laundry list of tech challenges being worked through, and compared the Quest headset, made by Meta’s Oculus unit, to the original iPhone as an initial milestone.

He kicked off his SXSW session acknowledging the awkwardness of talking about future technology in the midst of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. After Facebook and Instagram (also owned by Meta) cracked down on misinformation about the war in Ukraine, Russia blocked access to both services.

“We have teams working across the company that are working on trying to make sure that our services are available and that people can stay connected during this time,” he said. “I just want to mention it up front. Just share my support for everyone in Ukraine.”
