Apple on Monday released iPadOS 16.1 for its iPad lineup — jumping straight from July’s iPadOS 16 public beta to Monday’s update serving as the first official version of iPadOS 16.  

Like iOS 16 for the iPhone, the iPadOS update includes the ability to edit and unsend text messages, share photos and videos more easily with the iCloud‌ Shared Photo Library, and check out sports scores on your lock screen via Live Activities, as well as several new features specific to the iPad.

As long as you have a compatible iPad, like the iPad Pro or iPad Air (3rd generation and later), you can download and install iPadOS 16.1 right now. Here’s how.

And if you’ve got an iPhone and want to update to the latest mobile software update, here’s how to download iOS 16.1 on your iPhone as well as 7 hidden features and settings we found in iOS 16.

Does your iPad support iPadOS 16.1?

Apple says that the following devices support iPadOS 16.1:

• iPad Pro (all models)
• iPad Air (3rd generation and later)
• iPad (5th generation and later)
• iPad Mini (5th generation and later)

If you don’t know which iPad you have, go to Settings > General > About and check next to Model Name, which should include both the model and generation of your iPad.

How to download iPadOS 16.1

If you have any of the Apple tablets listed in the previous section, you’re good to download and install iPadOS 16.1. To download the latest software, go to Settings > General > Software Update and then just wait a few seconds for the iPadOS 16.1 update to appear. 

Now hit Upgrade to iPadOS 16.1 > Download and Install, enter your passcode if prompted and wait for iPadOS 16.1 to download, agree to the terms and conditions, then wait again. Once the download is complete, hit Install Now and your iPadOS 16.1 will restart. When it boots back up, you’ll have iPadOS 16.1 on your iPad.

Will you get all the new iPadOS 16.1 features?

As long as your iPad supports iPadOS 16.1, you should get most new features, but there are a few caveats. A handful of new iPadOS 16.1 features, which are listed below, will only work on iPads that have the M1 or M2 chip:

• External display support (M1 iPad and later)
• Reference mode (12.9-inch iPad Pro)
• Magnifier Detection (2020 iPad Pro)
• Door Detection (2020 iPad Pro)
• Virtual memory swap (iPad Air 5 256GB or M1 iPad Pro)
• Stage manager (iPad Pro 3rd generation and later)

I wish life could be simple. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. When it comes to Apple’s iPad lineup, which used to have just one model called the “iPad” back in the day, picking which one to buy has become a strangely entangled process.

Somewhere between every single model Apple offers is the perfect iPad, but it doesn’t currently exist in one single product.

That’s why I, as your reviewer guide, am having such a hard time with the review for Apple’s brand-new, redesigned 10th-gen iPad. Starting at $449 (£499, AU$749), it should be the iPad for everyone. But from what I’ve seen so far… it’s not. (This is a review in progress. As I use it more, I’ll weigh in with my final opinion.)

Maybe Apple already knows this, because the iPad lineup has six variants: 2022’s base model, last year’s ninth-gen iPad, the iPad Mini, the step-up iPad Air and the luxury iPad Pro, which comes in two sizes.

So which is the best one, you ask. “Stop talking about confusion, Scott, and help me.” This newly redesigned iPad nearly has it all: It has USB-C, finally! It has a bigger screen and better speakers, like the iPad Air. It’s the first iPad to move its camera to the horizontal edge for better FaceTime and Zoom calls.

Then there are the downsides. If you want to use an Apple Pencil with this iPad, you have to use the first-gen one, which means using a weird USB-C dongle. It doesn’t work with iPad case accessories made for any other model, meaning you’ll have to buy new accessories. And the price has gone up. It’s $449 for the version with only 64GB of storage, but you’ll likely want the step-up model with more storage — 256GB for $599. And with any sort of case or AppleCare, you’re probably looking at well over $700. I haven’t even factored in a Pencil or Apple’s new $250 Magic Keyboard Folio Case.

In this economy, a better bet might be the ninth-gen iPad from 2021, which starts at $329, steps up to $479 for the higher storage tier and frequently can be found on sale. Apple took a similar approach to its latest MacBook Air: Increasing the price while adding features, but keeping the older model in the lineup.

And that’s a shame because this iPad, with its larger display, camera improvement and better processor, is the model I’d prefer — minus its weird Pencil accessory situation.

I don’t use the Apple Pencil much, despite how nice it is to draw with, so I might be OK with having to use the first-gen Pencil. But many other people won’t be. And it’s baffling, frankly, why Apple decided to not make this iPad compatible with the more useful Pencil 2 despite all of its other improvements. (You can even get 5G through the modem-enabled version.)

I’m going to unplug my Pencil 1 from its dongle now and rest it somewhere where it won’t roll off the table while I continue this iPad review. 

Camera: Yes, finally, it’s perfect

The one big thing I wanted from the iPad arrived, like a magic wish granted: The weirdly placed front camera on the iPad is now on the landscape edge. This is great. Why is this great? Because I work on iPads in landscape mode, in cases and stands and keyboard docks. When I Zoom or FaceTime on other iPads, my face looks weirdly off-angle with my eyes looking elsewhere. That’s fixed now. Combined with the auto-zooming Center Stage tech, this iPad’s video chat camera is absolutely perfect.

This, alone, makes me want to use this iPad more than any other. But, alas, Apple’s only moved the camera’s position for this iPad. No other model, not even the new iPad Pros, have it. Why? I have no idea. This is clearly the future of camera placement, so you’re one step ahead if you buy this model.

Design: Mostly better, but not always

This iPad has adopted the design style of all other iPads at last, with USB-C charging replacing Lightning and a flat-edged case with a larger, curved-corner 10.9-inch display. This iPad has better speakers than the ninth-gen model, and the display feels notably bigger. The display lacks the anti-reflective coating and extra color gamut of the iPad Air.

It doesn’t have the smooth-scrolling 120Hz ProMotion on the iPad Pro models, but it’s more than good enough for basically anything. Often, I had a hard time telling the difference between the iPad Air and this iPad in everyday use.

This iPad is, effectively, the 2020 iPad Air minus a few features. The Air had the same A14 processor, but also supported the Pencil 2. It also had a rear Smart Connector that supported the Magic Keyboard case.

There’s no home button anymore, with Touch ID moving to the small side-placed power button, which the iPad Mini and iPad Air also have. I love this and wish the iPhones had it, too. There’s no Face ID camera, which is fine, because I wear a mask a lot anyway and Touch ID has been more convenient lately.

The downside to the design is it’s a bit thicker than the current 11-inch iPad Pro and iPad Air, meaning this won’t work with any of those cases. This means shopping for all-new accessories. Apple also created a differently placed Smart Connector on the side edge, which works with Apple’s iPad-made Keyboard Folio Case. More on that below. 

I asked my 14-year-old son, who uses an iPad all the time, what he thought of it. He said, “I don’t care, it looks the same.”

But there’s one thing about this iPad’s design I can’t stand.

Pencil: Really?

The best thing I can say about this iPad is it works with the Apple Pencil, but I think that’s almost on a technicality. Apple skipped support for the magnetically charging snap-on Pencil 2 with this model, so you’ll need to use the Pencil 1 — which rolls a lot, has an easy-to-lose end cap, doesn’t have extra side-tap controls and charges via Lightning.

Except instead of plugging the Pencil into the side of the iPad to charge, you’ll need a separate USB-C dongle and the charge cable to charge it. Not only is that weird, it’s frustrating. The odds I’ll bring all that stuff with me when I need it are slim. If you’re serious about making art on an iPad using the Apple Pencil, this bizarre move is bad enough to skip this model entirely. (Even the iPad Mini works with the Pencil 2, come on.)

Magic Keyboard folio case: An imperfect solution

Apple redesigned its keyboard-connected case yet again for this new iPad, taking an approach that feels a lot different than its Magic Keyboard case. That case, which works with the iPad Air and Pro, is expensive ($300 and up), heavy, can’t be used as an everyday case because of its inflexible angles, but is excellent for working on small work surfaces or laps.

The folio case is still expensive at $250. It’s split into two parts (a keyboard that snaps on the side and a kickstand back cover that snaps to the iPad back), can be used as an everyday case and adds a helpful row of function keys on the top. But it isn’t lap-friendly and lacks keyboard backlighting. I wrote this whole review on it, but I edited and posted it on a MacBook Air.

I’ve used keyboard cases by Logitech and others, and the Surface Pro has a similar keyboard design. You can get Logitech’s cases for less, and they offer better protection: Apple’s case doesn’t protect the iPad’s sides at all, and it looks ready to pop off if you ever drop the iPad. The keys feel a little different to me than the other Magic Keyboards or my MacBook Air. I don’t like it quite as much.

Also, there’s no place to put the Apple Pencil. Which, last I checked, was rolling around somewhere.

Performance: More than good enough

The A14 processor has been around for a while (it was on the iPhone 12). Here it comes with 4GB of RAM, similar to the iPhone 12 and 2020 iPad Air. The results are good: More than fast, but it’s not as blazing as the M1 in the Air or the M2 in the new Pro. 

Do you need bleeding-edge iPad performance? I don’t think so. The gains over last year’s ninth-gen iPad are significant, but no different than the iPad Air model from 2020. Apple’s mobile processors are now so powerful that the iPad software needs to catch up to their potential.

Should you wait? Maybe

Apple’s iPad lineup has been staggered lately: Base and Pro models arrive in the fall (sometimes) and the Air model comes in the spring (sometimes). Last spring’s iPad Air has slight improvements over this iPad, with an M1 chip, subtly better display and Pencil 2 support. But it doesn’t have this newly fixed front camera. The same thing happened last year when the entry-level iPad added Center Stage zoom while the iPad Air was left without it.

The iPad Air costs $150 more and could be tempting. Apple keeps its upgrade increments just within reach, like sizes of popcorn at a movie theater. Suddenly, you’ll find yourself entering iPad Pro land, and a thousand dollar-plus package. Pull back and ask yourself: Will this model go on sale? Would you be happy with last year’s iPad instead? Would you rather see if something better for the Air comes next spring?

The only thing that concerns me for future upgrades is that Apple’s leaning on its M1 chips as the cutoff for more advanced software features, although right now that mostly just means better external monitor support with Stage Manager, a feature that’s currently so buggy Apple’s delayed the release to later this year. I’d say you’re fine without the M1, especially since the A14 is more than good enough.

Down the road, having an old Pencil and a sub-M1 chip could leave this iPad on the other side of the future. Then again, you’ll be saving money. Apple hasn’t made this iPad lineup easy this year. It feels like the iPad is a product still in transformation. Right now, its perfect form doesn’t exist.

With features like palm rejection you can write or draw without interference from your hand touching the screen. It also responds to pressure and tilt, which is great for artists dealing with things like shading on an image. 

And marking up documents is also a breeze with the Apple Pencil. Whether you need to underline or highlight something or you need to sign something, this tool is handy. Plus, pairing is simple. Just remove the cap and plug the accessory into the Lightning connector on your iPad. Once paired it stays connected until you restart your device or pair the Pencil with another iPad. And charging the device is easy — just plug it into the Lightning port on your iPad. It fully charges in about 15 minutes.

The most important thing to do before making your purchase is to check compatibility, because this nifty device won’t work on all iPads. This Apple Pencil is compatible with the following devices: iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st and 2nd Generation), iPad Pro 10.5-inch, iPad Pro 9.7-inch, iPad (6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th Generation), iPad Air (3rd Generation) and iPad mini (5th Generation). If you don’t have one of these models, you might want to check out the Apple Pencil 2, which is largely compatible with newer iPads.

Airfares in July were more affordable than they were in June, but they’re still sky high compared to July 2021, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Because of that, you might not be traveling to see friends or family any time soon. That doesn’t mean you can’t spend an evening watching a movie or show together, though.

Apple’s iOS 15 upgrade brought many exciting new features to iPhone users — Focus mode, real-time weather alerts, facial recognition to safely store your driver’s license and other IDs in your Apple Wallet. The update also brought SharePlay, a new FaceTime feature that lets iPhone, iPad and Mac users share screens — and streams — with each other for virtual watch parties. SharePlay wasn’t available in the initial iOS 15 release, but it was included in iOS 15.1, which was released in October 2021.

SharePlay is one of FaceTime’s biggest updates, making Apple a big competitor with Zoom and Teleparty (formerly known as Netflix Party). You can use SharePlay to share your screen with your partner to watch movies, listen to songs and more — all while on your FaceTime call. There are a few caveats: Both parties need to have iOS 15.1 or later installed, and both parties must also be subscribed to any streaming services being shared. But overall, SharePlay seems poised to transform video calling and movie watching.

How to use SharePlay to share your screen in FaceTime

Like Zoom, FaceTime will let you share your screen with others on the call using SharePlay, so you can share more than just music and videos. Apple’s suggested use cases include planning a trip together, browsing Zillow with future roommates, showing off a video game or helping a friend with a technical problem by walking them through which settings to change. This feature will also work across Apple devices, which means you can share your Mac screen or your iPhone or iPad screen in a call. 

How to stream shows and movies with FaceTime 

Having a watch party in FaceTime is simple and intuitive with SharePlay. When you stream movies or TV shows with a friend or significant other, content will sync across devices and allow both parties access to controls. And you’ll still see and hear each other in picture-in-picture as you watch. Streaming services that have already partnered with Apple for SharePlay include Hulu, HBO Max, TikTok and ESPN Plus.

In order to use SharePlay, both parties need to use FaceTime on an Apple device that supports iOS 15.1, iPadOS 15.1 or MacOS Monterey 12.1. Another cool feature of SharePlay is that you can cast to your Apple TV while maintaining the FaceTime call on your iPhone. That way you’re not stuck squinting at a tiny screen with your friend’s face blocking the show.

Here’s how to set up SharePlay in FaceTime:

1. Start a FaceTime call.

2. Open a streaming app while connected to the call and choose a show or movie.

3. Press Play, and both parties can watch the same stream at once.

How to listen to music with SharePlay

Using SharePlay to listen to a new album with a significant other or friend works similarly to having a watch party. When sharing music, both parties will also have access to controls to pause, play or skip songs in SharePlay. And you can even contribute to shared playlists by adding songs to a queue within Apple Music. 

Here’s how to share music with SharePlay:

1. Start a FaceTime call.

2. Open Apple Music and choose a song.

3. Press Play, and the song will begin playing from both devices at the same time.

One drawback: SharePlay’s subscription problem

Netflix, Spotify and YouTube are a few of the apps that won’t sync with SharePlay. Apple also notes that a subscription will be required for both parties in order to share streaming services (like HBO Max or Disney Plus) through SharePlay. In our time with iOS 15, we put this to the test and verified that not only do both parties need a subscription to the app being shared (if applicable), but they also need to have the app itself downloaded on both devices.

So if your friend or significant other wants to SharePlay a TikTok video and you don’t have the TikTok app installed, you won’t be able to see the video over FaceTime. And before you get too excited, you also won’t be able to circumvent this by sharing your video stream via screen-share instead of through the app itself.

The 10.2-inch iPad features the A13 Bionic chip, Apple’s True Tone display, an improved front-facing camera and an increase in internal storage.

The small iPad Mini is $39 off right now at Amazon. Like the ninth-gen iPad, the sixth-gen iPad Mini was released last fall. It features an 8.3-inch display, the A15 Bionic chip, a USB-C charging port for a quick charge and a power button with Touch ID. 

The 11- and 12.9-inch iPad Pros are now the oldest of Apple’s tablets. They were the first non-Mac devices to be made with Apple’s own M1 chip when they hit the scene last spring. You can save $50 on the baseline 11-inch model but only $10 on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro model. Bigger discounts are available on some of the higher-capacity Pro models.

Apple recently upgraded its back-to-school targeted MacBook Air with a new M2 chip and a better camera and display. Apple’s iPad lineup, however, is still due for a 2022 upgrade. The midrange iPad Air got an M1 chip back in the spring, but the entry-level iPad and the iPad Pro are in a holding pattern until the fall. 

Apple is expected to have product launch events in September and October, similar to previous years. The iPhone 14 and Apple Watch 8 could be unveiled in September, while the iPads might be saved for October, alongside an update to iPadOS 16. 

If you’ve been waiting for new iPad models, here’s what to expect.

Entry-level iPad: New design, plus USB-C

The entry-level iPad could get a significant upgrade, based on the latest reports from Mark Gurman and 9to5Mac. The current entry-level ninth-gen iPad still has a Lightning port and an original circular Touch ID home button, but the design might finally change to match the iPad Mini, iPad Air and iPad Pro models. That could mean flatter edges, a curved-corner display, USB-C charging and maybe a side-placed Touch ID button, almost like a budget version of the iPad Air.

The base iPad could get the A14 chip that was in the last-gen iPad Air, which would be an upgrade from the A13 that’s in the current iPad, but short of the M1 that’s on the Air and Pro models. If that’s true, it could also mean the basic iPad won’t be able to use the extra Stage Manager multitasking modes in iPadOS 16.

It’s not much of a surprise, since the entry iPad adopted the previous iPad Air’s body design in a similar way a few years ago. Moving to USB-C charging feels overdue.

This could also allow the entry iPad to work with the second-gen Pencil, and possibly with Apple’s line of Magic Keyboard cases. 

9to5Mac’s report also says the entry iPad could get optional 5G cellular, which would be an upgrade over LTE options on current models. 

The entry iPad’s price could possibly increase, though, which is something to watch out for. 2022 has already had product price upticks due to inflation, and the same could happen for the most affordable iPad.

iPad Pro: Overdue improvements

The iPad Pro, meanwhile, hasn’t seen a refresh since spring 2021, when it added 5G, an M1 chip and a Mini LED display for the larger 12.9-inch version. Signs point to October for a new model.

Reports also point to the Pros getting the M2 chip that recently launched in the MacBook line, which seems like the most obvious move. Other things that might and might not change:

Will iPads finally fix the camera placement?

My biggest iPad request, besides revamping the OS extensively to make it a better Mac alternative, is fixing the front camera placement. Zoom meetings on iPads in landscape mode (which is how they mostly orient themselves if you use any sort of keyboard case) have their cameras placed off to the side. 

While Apple’s zoom-in Center Stage camera tech helps a bit, it doesn’t address eye-contact issues — I usually look like I’m staring off into space during my iPad Zooms. I’d love a camera switch to the longer edge, but who knows if that’s in the cards this year. Apple didn’t shift the camera placement for its latest iPad Air, so it feels unlikely. 

An improved Magic Keyboard? Unclear

Apple’s two-year-old Magic Keyboard is useful but has shortcomings: It lacks a row of function keys, it’s expensive and can’t fold back into a folio-type orientation for reading or sketching. It’s unlikely Apple would make the case less expensive, but I’d love to see an upgraded model with function keys, and maybe even added USB-C/Thunderbolt ports. Right now, no reports indicate this will happen.

A new Pencil? 

Apple’s Pencil is also pretty old now, and the second-gen model, while solid, is pretty long and awkward to store. Would Apple ever consider a more compact Pencil, or one that could tuck away more easily into the iPad Pro’s design? Another programmable touch-sensitive function or two on the side would also be helpful. Again, no reports have popped up on this either.

MagSafe possible

Some rumors have pointed to the Pro tablets adding wireless charging. Could it be MagSafe? MagSafe has popped up in Apple’s recent MacBook Pros, iMacs and iPhones. The one weird thing about MagSafe so far is that every instance has involved a different type of charger. Would Apple make the iPad Pro MagSafe yet another unique accessory, separate from the iPhone and MacBook versions? Apple’s magnetic Smart Connector for iPads already offers this type of snap-on charge accessory function for devices like the Magic Keyboard, although Smart Connector-compatible accessories remain few and far between.

Will the display tech be the same? 

The 12.9-inch 2021 iPad Pro was the only model to have a step-up Mini LED display, similar to the recent MacBook Pros, offering deeper blacks and more dynamic contrast. The 11-inch model still might not get Mini LED this year. Instead, the 11- and 12.9-inch iPads could be getting OLED displays in some future year’s upgrade.

Screen size: Not likely to change

A larger display for the iPad Pro may still be a few years away. A report from MacRumors suggests that two of Apple’s suppliers are preparing OLED displays in larger sizes (up to 15 inches) for future iPad models. However, these bigger Pro tablets aren’t expected to arrive until 2023 or 2024.

Battery life

To me, iPads are fine. But the iPad Pro’s more power-intensive nature, and its keyboard cases, could mean a useful battery upgrade is in the works. In my experience, the 2022 iPad Air’s battery life tends to use its charge up faster than the M1 Air does. The MacBook Air now outperforms the iPad in battery performance, and maybe in 2022 the iPad Pro could catch up.

Right now, you might be best holding off on buying an iPad if you can. But in the meantime, here are some guidelines for choosing between the current iPads.

After releasing iOS 15.5 to developers last Thursday, Apple launched the new update more widely on Monday.

Most of the changes coming with 15.5 are minor, mainly tweaks to apps and updates that seem to lay the foundation for larger changes in the future.

The update includes two main enhancements: The Apple Cash card in the Wallet app will now allow customers to send and request money, and a new Apple Podcasts setting will allow users to limit episodes stored on devices and automatically delete older ones, according to Apple’s release notes.

This may be Apple’s last update to the iOS 15‌ operating system, considering the company is expected to announce iOS 16 at its Worldwide Developers Conference next month.

Apple introduced Picture in Picture mode back in 2020 with the release of iOS 14, which allows you to watch videos in a floating window anywhere on your phone or tablet. If you want to watch Netflix or HBO Max without being in the app, you can easily do so by swiping up out of it, which usually enables PiP by default. Unfortunately, PiP doesn’t work with every third-party video streaming app on iOS, including YouTube.

YouTube’s iPhone app has offered a Picture in Picture feature to YouTube Premium subscribers as an experiment for nearly a year now, but recently the popular video-sharing service confirmed on Twitter that the feature has been removed. PiP appears to remain available if you’ve already activated it, but if you haven’t, YouTube hasn’t mentioned a date for its return. 

The announcement came after YouTube sent out a since-deleted message on Twitter stating that PiP would soon be available for everyone, causing confusion for viewers who were hoping to enjoy the feature. YouTube tweeted out: “Are you using an iOS smartphone? If so, the Picture-in-Picture feature is still rolling out & will be available in a matter of days across all iOS 15+ devices. Tweet back @ us if needed.”

It turned out the announcement was about the YouTube TV service instead, which apparently is rolling out PiP for iOS users, and that was then followed up by another announcement from the official YouTube TV Twitter account. YouTube did mention that PiP is still available for the regular YouTube app, but only for premium members on Android, which wasn’t the case until pretty recently (it’s been widely available on iOS).

Fortunately, if you’re an iPhone user and still want to access the removed feature, there’s a workaround to get YouTube to work with PiP on iOS — and it doesn’t require a premium subscription.

Use the PiPifier app on your iPhone or iPad to get Picture in Picture

To use Picture in Picture with YouTube on iOS, you’ll first need to download PiPifier, an app from Arno Appenzeller that acts as an extension for Safari and allows you to use PiP with any HTML5 video (essentially every web video on iOS) in Safari. That includes YouTube, but only if you access it in your web browser.

PiPifier is free to download from the App Store and works on the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Mac. It requires at least iOS 15, iPadOS 15 or MacOS 12 (the Apple M1 chip version) to work properly.

Enable the PiPifier extension in Safari

Once you download the app, you don’t need to open it — you can go straight to Safari to turn on the extension. In Safari, tap the AA icon on the top-left, go into Manage Extensions, toggle on PiPifier and hit Done. This will enable the PiPifier extension in Safari, which means you can now use it directly from the website settings menu.

How to use Picture in Picture with YouTube on the iPhone and iPad

To use Picture in Picture with YouTube, open the Safari app, go to the YouTube website and find the video you want to watch. Now tap the AA icon on the top left and hit the PiPifier option in the menu that appears. A small floating window should appear at the bottom of your screen, playing the YouTube video.

You can then swipe out of Safari and the floating window will follow you wherever you go, including your home screen and other applications. Use your fingers to move the floating window around the screen, and pinch in and out to resize it accordingly. If you tap on the floating window, you have options to fast-forward, rewind and play or pause the video, as well as maximize it to full-screen. To close the floating window, tap on the X icon on the top left of the window.

Functionality of a PiP video, in comparison to using the YouTube app, is pretty much the same: You can like and save videos, create a queue and leave a comment. The user interface is a bit clunkier, so it’s more difficult to use, but if you’re only using PiPifier with the YouTube website, you shouldn’t really run into any major issues.

Apple’s ecosystem allows you to easily work on your smartphone and then move to another device, like your tablet, and pick up where you left off. Whether you’re browsing the internet, making a payment online, sketching a drawing or texting your friends, you can use a feature known as Continuity, which seamlessly connects all your Apple devices. 

One of Continuity’s best tools is the universal clipboard. With the universal clipboard, you can copy a photo, video or link on your iPhone and then hop over to your iPad or MacBook and paste it without any issues. If you’re already familiar with the tool, you know how useful it is. But we can also tell you about a hidden gesture that makes the universal clipboard much easier to use.

Are your devices compatible with Continuity?

For Continuity to work on your Apple products, each device must meet the following requirements:

• Logged in to the same iCloud account
• Connected to the same Wi-Fi network
• Bluetooth and Handoff must be enabled

Also, while the universal clipboard feature works on most Apple devices, for this guide I’ll focus just on touchscreen devices, which use pinch gestures with Continuity, so this would only be for compatible iPhone, iPad and iPod touch models running at least iOS 10.

Use pinch gestures to easily copy and paste between your iPhone and iPad

There are several ways to copy and paste with the universal clipboard feature, but the quickest way to do it is with pinch gestures:

• Copy: Pinch in with three fingers
• Paste: Pinch out with three fingers

The best way to use this feature is with pictures and videos in the Photos app. Let’s say you want to copy and paste a photo from your iPhone to your iPad. All you need to do is open the Photos app on your iPhone, find the photo you want to migrate and then pinch in with three fingers to copy it to your clipboard. To then move the photo over to your other device, open the iPad, go into an app like Notes or Messages and pinch out with three fingers to paste the photo. Below you can see the feature in action.

You can do the same with links and text, but they would both need to be highlighted before using the pinch gestures to copy them to your clipboard and move them over to another device.

If you’ve downloaded iPadOS 15 onto your iPad, you have the App Library feature on your home screen. The App Library provides a searchable look at all of your installed iPad apps, grouped by category. Tapping the search box also brings up a full alphabetical list of your apps.

While the iPhone stashes the App Library neatly to the right of your home screen pages, the iPad version of the App Library sits squarely in your dock. It takes up valuable real estate on your screen, and it’s frankly a bit of an eyesore.

If you don’t use the App Library much, you might want to remove it from your iPad’s dock, but it’s not that simple. Unlike the other apps in your dock, the App Library can’t be removed simply by pressing down on it and tapping an “x” button.

Luckily, there’s a way to remove the App Library. It’s just hidden in your iPad settings. As a bonus, you can also remove “Recent Apps” from your dock at the same time if you’d like.

How to remove the App Library from your iPad dock in iPadOS 15

On your iPad running iPadOS 15, go to the Settings application.

1. Tap Home Screen & Dock.

2. Under the Dock section, toggle off Show App Library in Dock.

As soon as you do, the App Library icon will disappear from your dock, giving you more room for other apps. Don’t worry, though — you’ll still be able to access the feature by swiping left on your home screen until it appears. You can also use the search feature by swiping down anywhere on your home screen and then typing the name of the app you’re looking for, if the App Library just isn’t your thing.
