I wish life could be simple. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. When it comes to Apple’s iPad lineup, which used to have just one model called the “iPad” back in the day, picking which one to buy has become a strangely entangled process.

Somewhere between every single model Apple offers is the perfect iPad, but it doesn’t currently exist in one single product.

That’s why I, as your reviewer guide, am having such a hard time with the review for Apple’s brand-new, redesigned 10th-gen iPad. Starting at $449 (£499, AU$749), it should be the iPad for everyone. But from what I’ve seen so far… it’s not. (This is a review in progress. As I use it more, I’ll weigh in with my final opinion.)

Don’t Like

  • More expensive
  • New design means fewer case options
  • The 64GB entry-level storage isn’t enough

Maybe Apple already knows this, because the iPad lineup has six variants: 2022’s base model, last year’s ninth-gen iPad, the iPad Mini, the step-up iPad Air and the luxury iPad Pro, which comes in two sizes.

So which is the best one, you ask. “Stop talking about confusion, Scott, and help me.” This newly redesigned iPad nearly has it all: It has USB-C, finally! It has a bigger screen and better speakers, like the iPad Air. It’s the first iPad to move its camera to the horizontal edge for better FaceTime and Zoom calls.

iPad 10th Gen and iPad Pro: Which iPad Should You Buy…

Then there are the downsides. If you want to use an Apple Pencil with this iPad, you have to use the first-gen one, which means using a weird USB-C dongle. It doesn’t work with iPad case accessories made for any other model, meaning you’ll have to buy new accessories. And the price has gone up. It’s $449 for the version with only 64GB of storage, but you’ll likely want the step-up model with more storage — 256GB for $599. And with any sort of case or AppleCare, you’re probably looking at well over $700. I haven’t even factored in a Pencil or Apple’s new $250 Magic Keyboard Folio Case.

In this economy, a better bet might be the ninth-gen iPad from 2021, which starts at $329, steps up to $479 for the higher storage tier and frequently can be found on sale. Apple took a similar approach to its latest MacBook Air: Increasing the price while adding features, but keeping the older model in the lineup.

And that’s a shame because this iPad, with its larger display, camera improvement and better processor, is the model I’d prefer — minus its weird Pencil accessory situation.

I don’t use the Apple Pencil much, despite how nice it is to draw with, so I might be OK with having to use the first-gen Pencil. But many other people won’t be. And it’s baffling, frankly, why Apple decided to not make this iPad compatible with the more useful Pencil 2 despite all of its other improvements. (You can even get 5G through the modem-enabled version.)

I’m going to unplug my Pencil 1 from its dongle now and rest it somewhere where it won’t roll off the table while I continue this iPad review.

Me, celebrating that the camera finally looks great on a call with CNET’s Dan Ackerman.

Scott Stein/CNET

Camera: Yes, finally, it’s perfect

The one big thing I wanted from the iPad arrived, like a magic wish granted: The weirdly placed front camera on the iPad is now on the landscape edge. This is great. Why is this great? Because I work on iPads in landscape mode, in cases and stands and keyboard docks. When I Zoom or FaceTime on other iPads, my face looks weirdly off-angle with my eyes looking elsewhere. That’s fixed now. Combined with the auto-zooming Center Stage tech, this iPad’s video chat camera is absolutely perfect.

This, alone, makes me want to use this iPad more than any other. But, alas, Apple’s only moved the camera’s position for this iPad. No other model, not even the new iPad Pros, have it. Why? I have no idea. This is clearly the future of camera placement, so you’re one step ahead if you buy this model.

Apple's new iPad 10th generationApple's new iPad 10th generation

This iPad adopts the look of the iPad Air and iPad Pro. It’s mostly great.

Scott Stein/CNET

Design: Mostly better, but not always

This iPad has adopted the design style of all other iPads at last, with USB-C charging replacing Lightning and a flat-edged case with a larger, curved-corner 10.9-inch display. This iPad has better speakers than the ninth-gen model, and the display feels notably bigger. The display lacks the anti-reflective coating and extra color gamut of the iPad Air.

It doesn’t have the smooth-scrolling 120Hz ProMotion on the iPad Pro models, but it’s more than good enough for basically anything. Often, I had a hard time telling the difference between the iPad Air and this iPad in everyday use.

Scott Stein/CNET

This iPad is, effectively, the 2020 iPad Air minus a few features. The Air had the same A14 processor, but also supported the Pencil 2. It also had a rear Smart Connector that supported the Magic Keyboard case.

There’s no home button anymore, with Touch ID moving to the small side-placed power button, which the iPad Mini and iPad Air also have. I love this and wish the iPhones had it, too. There’s no Face ID camera, which is fine, because I wear a mask a lot anyway and Touch ID has been more convenient lately.

The new location of the Smart Connector: on the side.

Scott Stein/CNET

The downside to the design is it’s a bit thicker than the current 11-inch iPad Pro and iPad Air, meaning this won’t work with any of those cases. This means shopping for all-new accessories. Apple also created a differently placed Smart Connector on the side edge, which works with Apple’s iPad-made Keyboard Folio Case. More on that below.

I asked my 14-year-old son, who uses an iPad all the time, what he thought of it. He said, “I don’t care, it looks the same.”

But there’s one thing about this iPad’s design I can’t stand.

Apple's new iPad 10th generationApple's new iPad 10th generation

This is how you attach the Pencil now.

Scott Stein/CNET

Pencil: Really?

The best thing I can say about this iPad is it works with the Apple Pencil, but I think that’s almost on a technicality. Apple skipped support for the magnetically charging snap-on Pencil 2 with this model, so you’ll need to use the Pencil 1 — which rolls a lot, has an easy-to-lose end cap, doesn’t have extra side-tap controls and charges via Lightning.

Apple's new iPad 10th generationApple's new iPad 10th generation

It’s a lot of connectors. Also, that Pencil-to-USB dongle is not included in the iPad box.

Scott Stein/CNET

Except instead of plugging the Pencil into the side of the iPad to charge, you’ll need a separate USB-C dongle and the charge cable to charge it. Not only is that weird, it’s frustrating. The odds I’ll bring all that stuff with me when I need it are slim. If you’re serious about making art on an iPad using the Apple Pencil, this bizarre move is bad enough to skip this model entirely. (Even the iPad Mini works with the Pencil 2, come on.)

Apple's new iPad 10th generationApple's new iPad 10th generation

Apple’s new Magic Keyboard Folio has a look similar to previous Logitech cases.

Scott Stein/CNET

Magic Keyboard folio case: An imperfect solution

Apple redesigned its keyboard-connected case yet again for this new iPad, taking an approach that feels a lot different than its Magic Keyboard case. That case, which works with the iPad Air and Pro, is expensive ($300 and up), heavy, can’t be used as an everyday case because of its inflexible angles, but is excellent for working on small work surfaces or laps.

The folio case is still expensive at $250. It’s split into two parts (a keyboard that snaps on the side and a kickstand back cover that snaps to the iPad back), can be used as an everyday case and adds a helpful row of function keys on the top. But it isn’t lap-friendly and lacks keyboard backlighting. I wrote this whole review on it, but I edited and posted it on a MacBook Air.

I’ve used keyboard cases by Logitech and others, and the Surface Pro has a similar keyboard design. You can get Logitech’s cases for less, and they offer better protection: Apple’s case doesn’t protect the iPad’s sides at all, and it looks ready to pop off if you ever drop the iPad. The keys feel a little different to me than the other Magic Keyboards or my MacBook Air. I don’t like it quite as much.

Also, there’s no place to put the Apple Pencil. Which, last I checked, was rolling around somewhere.

Apple's new iPad 10th generationApple's new iPad 10th generation

The iPad 10th Gen (left) next to the iPad 9th Gen (right). The new iPad has a better A14 processor: not as fast as M1, but good enough. (The ninth-gen iPad is still fine too, though).

Scott Stein/CNET

Performance: More than good enough

The A14 processor has been around for a while (it was on the iPhone 12). Here it comes with 4GB of RAM, similar to the iPhone 12 and 2020 iPad Air. The results are good: More than fast, but it’s not as blazing as the M1 in the Air or the M2 in the new Pro.

Do you need bleeding-edge iPad performance? I don’t think so. The gains over last year’s ninth-gen iPad are significant, but no different than the iPad Air model from 2020. Apple’s mobile processors are now so powerful that the iPad software needs to catch up to their potential.

Apple's new iPad 10th generationApple's new iPad 10th generation

The iPad next to the iPad Mini. The family feels complete. but not all the features have come together.

Scott Stein/CNET

Should you wait? Maybe

Apple’s iPad lineup has been staggered lately: Base and Pro models arrive in the fall (sometimes) and the Air model comes in the spring (sometimes). Last spring’s iPad Air has slight improvements over this iPad, with an M1 chip, subtly better display and Pencil 2 support. But it doesn’t have this newly fixed front camera. The same thing happened last year when the entry-level iPad added Center Stage zoom while the iPad Air was left without it.

The iPad Air costs $150 more and could be tempting. Apple keeps its upgrade increments just within reach, like sizes of popcorn at a movie theater. Suddenly, you’ll find yourself entering iPad Pro land, and a thousand dollar-plus package. Pull back and ask yourself: Will this model go on sale? Would you be happy with last year’s iPad instead? Would you rather see if something better for the Air comes next spring?

The only thing that concerns me for future upgrades is that Apple’s leaning on its M1 chips as the cutoff for more advanced software features, although right now that mostly just means better external monitor support with Stage Manager, a feature that’s currently so buggy Apple’s delayed the release to later this year. I’d say you’re fine without the M1, especially since the A14 is more than good enough.

Down the road, having an old Pencil and a sub-M1 chip could leave this iPad on the other side of the future. Then again, you’ll be saving money. Apple hasn’t made this iPad lineup easy this year. It feels like the iPad is a product still in transformation. Right now, its perfect form doesn’t exist.

Apple on Monday released iPadOS 16.1 for its iPad lineup — jumping straight from July’s iPadOS 16 public beta to Monday’s update serving as the first official version of iPadOS 16.

Like iOS 16 for the iPhone, the iPadOS update includes the ability to edit and unsend text messages, share photos and videos more easily with the iCloud‌ Shared Photo Library, and check out sports scores on your lock screen via Live Activities, as well as several new features specific to the iPad.

As long as you have a compatible iPad, like the iPad Pro or iPad Air (3rd generation and later), you can download and install iPadOS 16.1 right now. Here’s how.

And if you’ve got an iPhone and want to update to the latest mobile software update, here’s how to download iOS 16.1 on your iPhone as well as 7 hidden features and settings we found in iOS 16.

Does your iPad support iPadOS 16.1?

Apple says that the following devices support iPadOS 16.1:

If you don’t know which iPad you have, go to Settings > General > About and check next to Model Name, which should include both the model and generation of your iPad.

How to download iPadOS 16.1

If you have any of the Apple tablets listed in the previous section, you’re good to download and install iPadOS 16.1. To download the latest software, go to Settings > General > Software Update and then just wait a few seconds for the iPadOS 16.1 update to appear.

Now hit Upgrade to iPadOS 16.1 Download and Install, enter your passcode if prompted and wait for iPadOS 16.1 to download, agree to the terms and conditions, then wait again. Once the download is complete, hit Install Now and your iPadOS 16.1 will restart. When it boots back up, you’ll have iPadOS 16.1 on your iPad.

Make sure you have enough storage space before you download and install iPadOS 16.1.

Nelson Aguilar/CNET

Will you get all the new iPadOS 16.1 features?

As long as your iPad supports iPadOS 16.1, you should get most new features, but there are a few caveats. A handful of new iPadOS 16.1 features, which are listed below, will only work on iPads that have the M1 or M2 chip:

  • External display support (M1 iPad and later)
  • Reference mode (12.9-inch iPad Pro)
  • Magnifier Detection (2020 iPad Pro)
  • Door Detection (2020 iPad Pro)
  • Virtual memory swap (iPad Air 5 256GB or M1 iPad Pro)
  • Stage manager (iPad Pro 3rd generation and later)

Drawing, notetaking and other tasks are often much easier with a stylus, making the Apple Pencil a welcome tool for iPad owners. It’s a precision tool with a pressure-sensitive top that allows you to write directly on the iPad’s display, lag-free. And while it comes with a hefty price tag, you can find Apple Pencil deals if you shop around.

Right now Amazon has discounted the 1st-gen Apple Pencil by $29, bringing the price to $70 for a limited time.

See at Amazon

An Apple Pencil can make a lot of tasks much simpler. For instance, when your Apple Pencil is connected to the iPad, your device will only recognize the tip of your Apple Pencil. With features like palm rejection you can write or draw without interference from your hand touching the screen. It also responds to pressure and tilt, which is great for artists dealing with things like shading on an image.

And marking up documents is also a breeze with the Apple Pencil. Whether you need to underline or highlight something or you need to sign something, this tool is handy. Plus, pairing is simple. Just remove the cap and plug the accessory into the Lightning connector on your iPad. Once paired it stays connected until you restart your device or pair the Pencil with another iPad. And charging the device is easy — just plug it into the Lightning port on your iPad. It fully charges in about 15 minutes.

The most important thing to do before making your purchase is to check compatibility, because this nifty device won’t work on all iPads. This Apple Pencil is compatible with the following devices: iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st and 2nd Generation), iPad Pro 10.5-inch, iPad Pro 9.7-inch, iPad (6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th Generation), iPad Air (3rd Generation) and iPad mini (5th Generation). If you don’t have one of these models, you might want to check out the Apple Pencil 2, which is largely compatible with newer iPads.

On Monday, Apple made iOS 16 — the newest version of its iPhone operating system — available to all iPhone users. More specifically, it can be installed by owners of compatible iPhones

Not every iPhone supports Apple’s newest software release. Some devices simply won’t be able to install iOS 16, though these are typically older devices that you might be hanging onto or repurposing to give your old iPhone new life

If you’re unsure about whether your iPhone will get the latest update or not, we’ll walk you through how you can check.

And if you want to learn more about iOS 16, read about some of the new features, like the ability to unsend text messages and automatically remove people and objects from photos. Also, here’s how you can preorder the iPhone 14, which will go on sale this Friday with iOS 16 preinstalled.

Not sure which iPhone you own? You can easily figure out the model from within your settings to check if it will run iOS 16.

To find your iPhone model, launch the Settings app and go to General > About. Next to Model Name, you should see what type of iPhone you own. Underneath that, you’ll see a Model Number, which you can use to find out more specifics about your model, such as capacity and year introduced, but that’s not necessary (only for iPhone SE) for checking whether your phone will support iOS 16 or not.

What happens to older iPhones like the iPhone 7 Plus?

Any iPhone older than the iPhone 8 will not support iOS 16, including the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Many people on Twitter were surprised by this, because many expected at least the iPhone 7 Plus to support iOS 16. Instead, the iPhone 7 series and some older models will only support up to iOS 15.

Will my iPad work with iOS 16?

Yes, the iPad has its own version of iOS 16 that’s known as iPadOS 16, but that won’t be released until October according to Apple. This newest operating system will be supported on the following iPad models:

The most recent addition to Apple’s iPad lineup is the iPad Air that was released this past spring, bringing an update to the only iPad that missed a refresh in 2021. The new iPad Air features Apple’s M1 chip, found in the company’s iPad Pros, along with 5G and a wider-angle, front-facing camera with the Center Stage autofocusing video feature. What it didn’t get was expanded storage: The new iPad Air models offer the same 64GB and 256GB capacities as the current versions at the same prices. You can save $40 right now at Amazon on the iPad Air, which is only $9 more than the lowest price we’ve seen for it.

The most affordable iPad remains the ninth-gen iPad, and it’s even more affordable right now at its current $49 discount at Amazon, Best Buy and Target. We’ve not seen it for less than its current $280 price. The 10.2-inch iPad features the A13 Bionic chip, Apple’s True Tone display, an improved front-facing camera and an increase in internal storage.

The small iPad Mini is $39 off right now at Amazon. Like the ninth-gen iPad, the sixth-gen iPad Mini was released last fall. It features an 8.3-inch display, the A15 Bionic chip, a USB-C charging port for a quick charge and a power button with Touch ID.

The 11- and 12.9-inch iPad Pros are now the oldest of Apple’s tablets. They were the first non-Mac devices to be made with Apple’s own M1 chip when they hit the scene last spring. You can save $50 on the baseline 11-inch model but only $10 on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro model. Bigger discounts are available on some of the higher-capacity Pro models.

11-inch iPad Pro (128GB) $799 $749 $699
12.9-inch iPad Pro (128GB) $1,099 $1,099 $950

Scott Stein/CNET

10.2-inch, 9th-gen iPad (64GB): $280

Save $49 vs. Apple Store

The basic, 10.2-inch iPad didn’t receive a design overhaul like its Mini cousin, but it does serve up a faster processor, a better front-facing camera and an improved display compared with the previous, eighth-gen iPad. The biggest addition is the storage, which was doubled to 64GB on the base model and to 256GB on the step-up model. Other than that, the change you’ll most likely welcome in this age of FaceTime and Zoom calls is the front camera going from 1.2 megapixels to a wider-angle 12 megapixels. It’s also gained Center Stage to keep your mug in the frame during video calls. It’s $49 off at Amazon, Best Buy and Target right now — that’s the biggest discount we’ve seen for it.

8.3-inch, 6th-gen iPad Mini (64GB): $460

Save $39 vs. Apple Store

The iPad Mini received a complete overhaul. The new design has rounded edges, thin bezels and no home button. The power button on the side now has Touch ID, and the Lightning port has been replaced by a USB-C charging port. It runs on the new A15 Bionic chip (same as the iPhone 13) and serves up an improved and slightly larger 8.3-inch display and better cameras than the old, fifth-gen Mini. You can save $39 on it right now, which is the usual discount we’ve seen for the past few weeks. It occasionally drops to $440 and ever so briefly dropped to $400 earlier this month.

10.9-inch iPad Air (64GB): $559

Save $40 vs. Apple Store

The new 10.9-inch iPad Air features Apple’s M1 chip, found in the company’s iPad Pros, along with 5G and a wider-angle, front-facing camera with the Center Stage autofocusing video feature. What it didn’t get was expanded storage — the new iPad Air models offer the same 64GB and 256GB capacities as the current versions at the same prices. CNET’s iPad expert Scott Stein still recommends the less expensive 10.2-inch iPad for most people, but sees this iPad Air as a solid step up. Despite being available for just a few months, the new iPad Air is already on discount. You can save $40 at Amazon on the 64GB baseline model and up to $70 on the 256GB model.

11-inch iPad Pro (128GB): $749

Save $50 vs. Apple Store

The new 11-inch iPad Pro features Apple’s M1 chip and is available with storage capacities ranging from 128GB to 2TB. Most retailers are selling the baseline 128GB model at or above Apple’s $799 list price, but you can save $50 on the silver model at Amazon right now. If you are willing to spend more for more storage space, you can also save on some of the higher-capacity models at Amazon.

We know, your AirPods already came with a case that protects the earbuds during storage and charging. But AirPods cases are somewhat fragile themselves, which is why the case itself needs protection, too. Dropping your encased AirPods at the right angle can cause a crack in the case or an unwanted disassembly. Not to mention the unseemly scratches that accumulate when you drop your earbuds enough times.

Ultimately, it’s worth investing in a protective case for your AirPods to keep them in the best working condition. And you don’t have to spend a fortune for an AirPods Pro case that is both sleek and durable. Many still allow for wireless charging. If you’re looking for an extra layer of defense that will protect your earbuds without breaking the bank, we’ve got you covered. I’ve curated this collection of budget-friendly cases that you can scoop up for less than $15. Note that Apple has announced a new AirPods Pro 2 model, the case of which is different to the first-gen model.

Neotrixqi

NeotrixQI AirPods Case: $6

It’s billed as a waterproof case, though we wouldn’t take it scuba diving

The AirPods case is fairly rugged to begin with, so I don’t feel like you need to enclose it in a mil-spec-rated ruggedized case for safety — a thin layer of silicone should do. There are a lot of silicone cases like this one under $10 or so that include a dust cover for the charging port, let the LED shine through and have a loop for a metal carabiner, but this one is also resistant to water, which could come in handy at the beach or while standing over the sink.

MOBOSI

Mobosi Military AirPods Case Cover: $12

It looks like something Seal Team 6 might use

In a sense, the Mobosi Military AirPods Case Cover is pretty typical — it’s a rubberized case that you slip over your AirPods wired or wireless charging case, and it comes with a secure mount for a detachable carabiner. But the gorgeous diagonal ribbing gives this case a military sort of vibe, and helps grippability at the same time.

Right now, this $12 case is available for 5% off when you click the coupon on the product page.

Elago

Elago Mini Car AirPods Case: $15

It’s a shock-absorbent car with glow-in-the-dark headlights

Most cases are very functional — just impact-resistant sleeves for your AirPods case. But we need some whimsy in our lives, which is why I love this surprisingly detailed silicone mini car. The headlights and taillights glow in the dark, and the solid silicone material means it’s as shock-absorbent as Flubber. Despite its shape, it doesn’t interfere with wireless charging, either.

Doboli

Doboli AirPods Pro Case Cover: $6

Because your AirPods Pro case needs some protection, too

Your AirPods Pro slide into this silicone case that’s available in over a dozen colors. The LED charging light is visible, the case doesn’t interfere with wireless charging and the whole thing is water-resistant. It also comes with a carabiner for securing it on the go.

ZtotopCase

Ztotop Case for AirPods Pro: $9

This rigid case is ultra-shock-resistant (Update: Currently out of stock)

Most cases are soft, rubberized silicone, but the Ztotop Case for AirPods Pro is a combination of silicone and thermoplastic polyurethane, which results in an impact-resistant hard shell. The top of the cover uses adhesive to keep it attached to the hinged lid of the case, and it comes with a carabiner that attaches to a hard point on the case. It’s open on the bottom to allow wired charging, and it doesn’t interfere with wireless charging.

Apple’s ninth-gen iPad could be just what you need if you’re looking for a portable tablet that can help you be productive on the go (or from your comfortable couch). Whether you want to work, play, stay connected, create, explore or stream entertainment online, the iPad makes it all easy. It has an upgraded CPU and Neural Engine, which offer a faster and more powerful performance compared to previous models.

Though there were no iPad-related announcements at Apple’s Sept. 7 media event, you can now save $50 on 2021 iPad (64GB) with Wi-Fi on Amazon, bringing the price down to just $279. The discount applies to both the space gray and silver colorways and cellular-enabled models are seeing the same savings.

See at Amazon

Apple’s 10.2-inch tablet may not be its best iPad when it comes to raw power but it has plenty of great features. It’s equipped with the powerful A13 Bionic chip, an 8-megapixel wide-angle rear camera, a 12-megapixel ultrawide front camera with Center Stage technology and more. The Retina display has been upgraded from previous models and now has True Tone technology, which adjusts the screen for comfortable viewing in any light.

It also features a Lightning connector and gets up to 10 hours of battery life per charge. Plus, the 2021 iPad supports the first-gen Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard, which are sold separately, but can help you create and work with ease and may be worth the investment.

And if you are worried that 64GB of storage may not be enough for your pictures, videos or other projects or media, remember that Apple offers plenty of ways to increase your storage if you are willing to use cloud services like the company’s own iCloud option or apps like Dropbox and Google Drive, so that storage size shouldn’t limit what you can do on your iPad. Alternatively, you could upgrade to the 256GB configuration though only those with the added cellular connectivity are seeing any form of discount at Amazon right now.

CNET’s Scott Stein wrapped up his review of this iPad by saying, “I think the basic unexciting iPad wins out. Especially for the price.” He awarded it an Editors’ Choice.

Compact tablets are great if you want the accessible features of a larger tablet in a more convenient and affordable package. The iPad Mini is our favorite small tablet on the market in 2022, and right now Amazon has a rare opportunity to snag one at a discount. You can save $99 on all colors and configurations of the sixth-gen iPad Mini, dropping the price down to just $400 for the 64GB model and $550 for the 256GB model. There’s no set expiration on these offers, but deals on the latest Apple devices rarely stick around for long. We’d definitely recommend getting your order in sooner rather than later if you’re hoping to grab one at these low prices.

In his review of the latest iPad Mini, CNET’s Scott Stein called the tablet “a hybrid of older iPad Pros and more recent iPhones.” It features a stunning 8.3 inch liquid retina display as well as a 12-megapixel camera that can quickly scan documents, capture 4K video and will even keep you centered during video calls. It’s equipped with Apple’s advanced A15 Bionic chip, the same used on the iPhone 13, as well as 4GB of RAM. So while it’s great for browsing and streaming, it will struggle with high-strain tasks like photo and video editing. It also features Wi-Fi 6 support for speedy web performance, and has a battery life of up to 10 hours for all day work and play. It also boasts 5G support if you opt for one of the slightly pricier Wi-Fi and cellular models, which are on sale too. The $99 discount drops prices down to $550 for the 64GB model and $700 for the 256GB model.

If you’re an iPad user who needs to do a lot of writing, you may want to invest in a keyboard to make the job easier. Apple’s Smart Keyboard and Magic Keyboard are great products that can turn your tablet into a workstation, but both tend to be expensive add-ons. However, right now, refurbished iPad keyboards are available starting as low as $90 at Woot. This offer is only available until the end of the day or while supplies last.

See at Woot

Refurbs are a great way to get a high-quality keyboard without spending a lot of money. Plus, Woot’s refurbished products come with a limited warranty, so you can be confident that you’re getting a great deal and that you’re covered if something goes wrong. And the prices are way less than you would pay if you were buying new.

The Smart Keyboard Folio for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is the most affordable of the bunch at $90. That’s half the price you’d pay for it brand new at Amazon right now. It works with the third, fourth and fifth generation iPad Pro models in the 12.9-inch size. If you’d prefer a more traditional laptop experience with a keyboard and trackpad, the Magic Keyboard is also available in Woot’s sale for both 12.9-inch and 11-inch iPad Pro owners with prices from $155. Considering it starts at $300 brand new, these deals are well worth nabbing if you don’t mind a previously owned device.

The sale also features the Apple Smart Keyboard that works with the seventh, eighth and ninth generation iPad as well as the third-gen iPad Air. Its price is down to $118 from a manufacturer suggested retail price of $159 and, unlike the other keyboards in the sale, it is offered brand new.

All of the keyboards connect easily using magnets and never have to be paired or charged, so they’re always ready to go for any project, paper or presentation you might have. Remember, though, that these deals are only for the keyboards and that the iPad itself is sold separately.

If you find yourself having to squint in order to read or type words on your phone or computer screen, you won’t get much enjoyment out of your Apple device. Not to mention the headache-inducing blue light.

Apple has a number of accessibility features that you can explore and customize under Settings > Accessibility. With the launch of iOS 15, Apple’s Zoom feature has a new reworked accessibility feature. This tool is also available on Macs.

CNET Tech Tips logoCNET Tech Tips logo

Here’s what you need to know about the Zoom feature.

What is Apple’s Zoom tool?

The Zoom feature lets you magnify specific parts of your screen. You can customize the feature to magnify the whole screen or a draggable windowed view. Zoom also allows you to turn on gestures like double-tapping three fingers to activate Zoom, move around your screen and change the magnification.

Where can I find Apple’s Zoom tool?

To find Zoom, open the Settings app on your iPhone, iPad or Mac, tap Accessibility and choose Zoom.

How the Zoom tool works

Here’s what you’ll turn on or off to make the magnification feature work best for you.

  • Follow Focus lets you track your selections, like your text insertion point, as well as your typing.
  • Smart Typing becomes available if you turn on Follow Focus. This lets you switch to Window Zoom when the keyboard pops up. Window Zoom magnifies a section of screen in a window that you can drag around to expand what you need to see, like a digital magnifying glass. Also, once the keyboard pops up, you can double-tap to magnify where you’re typing, but the keyboard stays put.
  • Keyboard shortcuts only applies if you’ve connected an external keyboard to your iPad. If you have, simply toggle the option on to find and customize keyboard shortcuts like toggling Zoom, moving your Window and resizing your Window. If you open Zoom on your Mac, you can turn on Zoom keyboard shortcuts, scroll gestures, hover text and zoom on the touch bar. For example, toggle zoom is Option-Command-8. Pressing that combination lets you zoom in and back out. You can also choose whether you want to magnify full-screen, split-screen or picture-in-picture mode.
Hand holding an iPhone with iOS 15 logo on the screenHand holding an iPhone with iOS 15 logo on the screen

You can find the Zoom feature under the Accessibility tab in Settings.

Sarah Tew/CNET

  • Zoom controller gives you quick access to determine what activates for single, double and triple taps on the screen. You can also choose to Show Controller on the screen. This puts a little icon on the screen that I found helpful when moving the Window around the screen. Think of it as a little map to keep you oriented when you’ve magnified a section of screen. You can choose between five different colors to make the icon more visible, as well as change the opacity.
  • Zoom Region lets you choose between a Window Zoom, Full Screen Zoom or Pinned Zoom. Window Zoom will magnify a section of your screen, but you’ll still be able to see some of the unmagnified screen and pan over that area. Full Screen Zoom eliminates the window and works like double tapping to magnify and pan around on a photo. Pinned Zoom lets you choose a specific section of the screen — top, left, right or bottom — and keeps the unpinned section in regular size.
  • Zoom filter lets you customize the magnified section’s coloring as inverted, grayscale, grayscale inverted or low-light.
  • Maximum Zoom Level is a simple slider that lets you customize the magnification anywhere from 1.2x all the way to 15x.
