I wish life could be simple. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. When it comes to Apple’s iPad lineup, which used to have just one model called the “iPad” back in the day, picking which one to buy has become a strangely entangled process.

Somewhere between every single model Apple offers is the perfect iPad, but it doesn’t currently exist in one single product.

That’s why I, as your reviewer guide, am having such a hard time with the review for Apple’s brand-new, redesigned 10th-gen iPad. Starting at $449 (£499, AU$749), it should be the iPad for everyone. But from what I’ve seen so far… it’s not. (This is a review in progress. As I use it more, I’ll weigh in with my final opinion.)

Like

  • Larger screen

  • Faster A14 processor
  • Front-facing camera’s in the right place

Don’t Like

  • More expensive
  • New design means fewer case options
  • The 64GB entry-level storage isn’t enough

Maybe Apple already knows this, because the iPad lineup has six variants: 2022’s base model, last year’s ninth-gen iPad, the iPad Mini, the step-up iPad Air and the luxury iPad Pro, which comes in two sizes.

So which is the best one, you ask. “Stop talking about confusion, Scott, and help me.” This newly redesigned iPad nearly has it all: It has USB-C, finally! It has a bigger screen and better speakers, like the iPad Air. It’s the first iPad to move its camera to the horizontal edge for better FaceTime and Zoom calls.

Then there are the downsides. If you want to use an Apple Pencil with this iPad, you have to use the first-gen one, which means using a weird USB-C dongle. It doesn’t work with iPad case accessories made for any other model, meaning you’ll have to buy new accessories. And the price has gone up. It’s $449 for the version with only 64GB of storage, but you’ll likely want the step-up model with more storage — 256GB for $599. And with any sort of case or AppleCare, you’re probably looking at well over $700. I haven’t even factored in a Pencil or Apple’s new $250 Magic Keyboard Folio Case.

In this economy, a better bet might be the ninth-gen iPad from 2021, which starts at $329, steps up to $479 for the higher storage tier and frequently can be found on sale. Apple took a similar approach to its latest MacBook Air: Increasing the price while adding features, but keeping the older model in the lineup.

And that’s a shame because this iPad, with its larger display, camera improvement and better processor, is the model I’d prefer — minus its weird Pencil accessory situation.

I don’t use the Apple Pencil much, despite how nice it is to draw with, so I might be OK with having to use the first-gen Pencil. But many other people won’t be. And it’s baffling, frankly, why Apple decided to not make this iPad compatible with the more useful Pencil 2 despite all of its other improvements. (You can even get 5G through the modem-enabled version.)

I’m going to unplug my Pencil 1 from its dongle now and rest it somewhere where it won’t roll off the table while I continue this iPad review.

Me, celebrating that the camera finally looks great on a call with CNET’s Dan Ackerman.

Scott Stein/CNET

Camera: Yes, finally, it’s perfect

The one big thing I wanted from the iPad arrived, like a magic wish granted: The weirdly placed front camera on the iPad is now on the landscape edge. This is great. Why is this great? Because I work on iPads in landscape mode, in cases and stands and keyboard docks. When I Zoom or FaceTime on other iPads, my face looks weirdly off-angle with my eyes looking elsewhere. That’s fixed now. Combined with the auto-zooming Center Stage tech, this iPad’s video chat camera is absolutely perfect.

This, alone, makes me want to use this iPad more than any other. But, alas, Apple’s only moved the camera’s position for this iPad. No other model, not even the new iPad Pros, have it. Why? I have no idea. This is clearly the future of camera placement, so you’re one step ahead if you buy this model.

Apple's new iPad 10th generationApple's new iPad 10th generation

This iPad adopts the look of the iPad Air and iPad Pro. It’s mostly great.

Scott Stein/CNET

Design: Mostly better, but not always

This iPad has adopted the design style of all other iPads at last, with USB-C charging replacing Lightning and a flat-edged case with a larger, curved-corner 10.9-inch display. This iPad has better speakers than the ninth-gen model, and the display feels notably bigger. The display lacks the anti-reflective coating and extra color gamut of the iPad Air.

It doesn’t have the smooth-scrolling 120Hz ProMotion on the iPad Pro models, but it’s more than good enough for basically anything. Often, I had a hard time telling the difference between the iPad Air and this iPad in everyday use.

Scott Stein/CNET

This iPad is, effectively, the 2020 iPad Air minus a few features. The Air had the same A14 processor, but also supported the Pencil 2. It also had a rear Smart Connector that supported the Magic Keyboard case.

There’s no home button anymore, with Touch ID moving to the small side-placed power button, which the iPad Mini and iPad Air also have. I love this and wish the iPhones had it, too. There’s no Face ID camera, which is fine, because I wear a mask a lot anyway and Touch ID has been more convenient lately.

The new location of the Smart Connector: on the side.

Scott Stein/CNET

The downside to the design is it’s a bit thicker than the current 11-inch iPad Pro and iPad Air, meaning this won’t work with any of those cases. This means shopping for all-new accessories. Apple also created a differently placed Smart Connector on the side edge, which works with Apple’s iPad-made Keyboard Folio Case. More on that below.

I asked my 14-year-old son, who uses an iPad all the time, what he thought of it. He said, “I don’t care, it looks the same.”

But there’s one thing about this iPad’s design I can’t stand.

Apple's new iPad 10th generationApple's new iPad 10th generation

This is how you attach the Pencil now.

Scott Stein/CNET

Pencil: Really?

The best thing I can say about this iPad is it works with the Apple Pencil, but I think that’s almost on a technicality. Apple skipped support for the magnetically charging snap-on Pencil 2 with this model, so you’ll need to use the Pencil 1 — which rolls a lot, has an easy-to-lose end cap, doesn’t have extra side-tap controls and charges via Lightning.

Apple's new iPad 10th generationApple's new iPad 10th generation

It’s a lot of connectors. Also, that Pencil-to-USB dongle is not included in the iPad box.

Scott Stein/CNET

Except instead of plugging the Pencil into the side of the iPad to charge, you’ll need a separate USB-C dongle and the charge cable to charge it. Not only is that weird, it’s frustrating. The odds I’ll bring all that stuff with me when I need it are slim. If you’re serious about making art on an iPad using the Apple Pencil, this bizarre move is bad enough to skip this model entirely. (Even the iPad Mini works with the Pencil 2, come on.)

Apple's new iPad 10th generationApple's new iPad 10th generation

Apple’s new Magic Keyboard Folio has a look similar to previous Logitech cases.

Scott Stein/CNET

Magic Keyboard folio case: An imperfect solution

Apple redesigned its keyboard-connected case yet again for this new iPad, taking an approach that feels a lot different than its Magic Keyboard case. That case, which works with the iPad Air and Pro, is expensive ($300 and up), heavy, can’t be used as an everyday case because of its inflexible angles, but is excellent for working on small work surfaces or laps.

The folio case is still expensive at $250. It’s split into two parts (a keyboard that snaps on the side and a kickstand back cover that snaps to the iPad back), can be used as an everyday case and adds a helpful row of function keys on the top. But it isn’t lap-friendly and lacks keyboard backlighting. I wrote this whole review on it, but I edited and posted it on a MacBook Air.

I’ve used keyboard cases by Logitech and others, and the Surface Pro has a similar keyboard design. You can get Logitech’s cases for less, and they offer better protection: Apple’s case doesn’t protect the iPad’s sides at all, and it looks ready to pop off if you ever drop the iPad. The keys feel a little different to me than the other Magic Keyboards or my MacBook Air. I don’t like it quite as much.

Also, there’s no place to put the Apple Pencil. Which, last I checked, was rolling around somewhere.

Apple's new iPad 10th generationApple's new iPad 10th generation

The iPad 10th Gen (left) next to the iPad 9th Gen (right). The new iPad has a better A14 processor: not as fast as M1, but good enough. (The ninth-gen iPad is still fine too, though).

Scott Stein/CNET

Performance: More than good enough

The A14 processor has been around for a while (it was on the iPhone 12). Here it comes with 4GB of RAM, similar to the iPhone 12 and 2020 iPad Air. The results are good: More than fast, but it’s not as blazing as the M1 in the Air or the M2 in the new Pro.

Do you need bleeding-edge iPad performance? I don’t think so. The gains over last year’s ninth-gen iPad are significant, but no different than the iPad Air model from 2020. Apple’s mobile processors are now so powerful that the iPad software needs to catch up to their potential.

Apple's new iPad 10th generationApple's new iPad 10th generation

The iPad next to the iPad Mini. The family feels complete. but not all the features have come together.

Scott Stein/CNET

Should you wait? Maybe

Apple’s iPad lineup has been staggered lately: Base and Pro models arrive in the fall (sometimes) and the Air model comes in the spring (sometimes). Last spring’s iPad Air has slight improvements over this iPad, with an M1 chip, subtly better display and Pencil 2 support. But it doesn’t have this newly fixed front camera. The same thing happened last year when the entry-level iPad added Center Stage zoom while the iPad Air was left without it.

The iPad Air costs $150 more and could be tempting. Apple keeps its upgrade increments just within reach, like sizes of popcorn at a movie theater. Suddenly, you’ll find yourself entering iPad Pro land, and a thousand dollar-plus package. Pull back and ask yourself: Will this model go on sale? Would you be happy with last year’s iPad instead? Would you rather see if something better for the Air comes next spring?

The only thing that concerns me for future upgrades is that Apple’s leaning on its M1 chips as the cutoff for more advanced software features, although right now that mostly just means better external monitor support with Stage Manager, a feature that’s currently so buggy Apple’s delayed the release to later this year. I’d say you’re fine without the M1, especially since the A14 is more than good enough.

Down the road, having an old Pencil and a sub-M1 chip could leave this iPad on the other side of the future. Then again, you’ll be saving money. Apple hasn’t made this iPad lineup easy this year. It feels like the iPad is a product still in transformation. Right now, its perfect form doesn’t exist.

This story is part of 84 Days of Holiday, a collection that helps you find the perfect gift for anyone.

Over the years, I’ve often described Apple’s MacBook Air as the most universally useful laptop you can get (or in this case, give). The latest version, now with Apple’s new M2 chip inside, hits the fresh button in a lot of ways: new colors, new design, better camera, slightly bigger screen. That means it can be either a major upgrade if you’re replacing an older Air or a big step up if it’s someone’s first laptop or first “premium” laptop.

Why it’s a great gift: Anyone on your list would appreciate the Air. It’s a great college or high school laptop, especially because it’s tough enough to last all four years. But it’s just as at home with novelists in coffee shops and startup founders in airport lounges. Why has the MacBook Air remained so popular for so many years? I think it’s a just-right combination of design, power, durability, ease of use and price.

What you’ll pay: This year’s model would be a gift of slightly more significance than usual, because Apple’s starting price for the M2 MacBook Air has jumped to $1,199 from the traditional $999. Fortunately, the M1 MacBook Air with an older design and M1 chip is still available for $999.

Hawkins, Indiana, may be home to murderous monsters, but it’s way less threatening when you toss in campy musical numbers and silly wigs.

You get plenty of both in Stranger Sings: The Parody Musical, which bills itself as a “hilarious ‘upside down’ take” on the hit Netflix horror drama about young friends facing supernatural forces in a fictional ’80s town. It’s playing off-Broadway in New York now, and runs through Jan. 1 in London. The show comes to Melbourne, Australia, in November, with more Australian cities on the docket.

With its colorful cast of ragtag characters, big ’80s hair and bulky portable phones that could double as doorstops, the series practically begged for musical satire, says Jonathan Hogue, writer and producer of Stranger Sings.

“When I started exploring this series as a parody musical, the songs and story beats all fell into place so naturally, as if the show was meant to be musicalized, and parodied, from the beginning,” says Hogue, a big fan of the Duffer brothers’ creation, which ended its fourth season in August. “Who doesn’t want to see Joyce get a big brassy showstopper with her Christmas lights? Or Barb become a vengeful musical diva?”

The rest of the gang’s here for the musical version too: Mike, Lucas, Dustin, Will, Eleven Hopper, Steve and Jonathan. Stranger Sings follows season 1’s story arc, which explains the reappearance of poor, ill-fated Barb, alive again and doing duets with questionable bestie Nancy.

“We’ll stick together, friends forever, and best friends never, they never die,” they sing with a knowing wink.

A post shared by Stranger Sings! The Parody Musical (@strangersingsmusical)

The show lasts around two hours and features 14 songs — about life in Hawkins, awkward teen crushes and the stress of having your child kidnapped and taken to another dimension. Some of the more amusing lyrics come from a number featuring psychic kid Eleven singing about sketchy Hawkins National Laboratory scientist Dr. Brenner. Her father figure does some very unpaternal things, like put Eleven in a sensory deprivation tank to exploit her telekinetic powers for government evil.

“I always wanted a dad who would never make me cry,” Eleven sings. “One who’d tell me, ‘Kid, I’m so proud of you,’ instead of ‘Stay in your cell ’til July.'”

“I got a lot of ideas from watching and listening to classic ’80s films and music, but I also carried so much inspiration over from my lifelong obsession with Saturday Night Live, Mel Brooks, Monty Python and other sketch comedy creators,” says Hogue, who’s pursuing a graduate degree in theater management and producing at New York’s Columbia University. “It was also important to me that while the show remained funny throughout, I also made sure to infuse it with just the right amount of heart so that audiences really cared about these characters, as silly as they are.”

The show’s pulled in generally enthusiastic reviews, with critics calling it high-energy and hilarious. It won seven Broadway World Off/Off-Off Broadway Awards in 2021, including best new musical, best costume design, lighting design and scene design.

Hogue has watched all four seasons of the Netflix show, met the cast and even been an extra in a few episodes. But he says audiences can still enjoy the musical even if they’ve never heard of Madmax or the Mind Flayer or tweeted using the #justiceforbarb hashtag.

“One of my favorite things to hear … is audience members telling me, ‘I’ve never seen an episode of Stranger Things and I loved this show,” Hogue says.

This isn’t the first time Stranger Things has been set to music. Five years ago, singer Brian David Gilbert came out with a comedic musical backing track to be played in place of the first season’s regular audio track. The album’s also called Stranger Sings, but isn’t connected with the musical.

The fifth and final season of Stranger Things is expected on Netflix sometime in 2024. The Duffer brothers have confirmed a time jump for season 5, but they haven’t revealed details.

In the meantime, maybe a hip-thrusting Demogorgon in a tight body suit will tide you over.

You’ve put in long hours studying for your college midterms and don’t want anyone copying your answers. What do you do? You make a wacky anti-cheating hat that blocks your peers from seeing your test, of course.

That’s what students at a school in the Philippines did on the prompting of their teacher, who asked them to create headgear that would prevent others from copying their work.

Mary Joy Mandane-Ortiz, a professor of mechanical engineering at Bicol University’s College of Engineering, told the BBC she initially asked students to make a “simple” design out of paper as a fun way to ensure honest exam-taking earlier this month. But these engineers weren’t going to settle for simple. They tapped anything they could find — from paper bags to cardboard tubes and boxes, bubble wrap, fabric and even a tennis racket case to create headwear that obscures neighbors’ views. One placed an open umbrella canopy atop his head, while another wore headphones to hold two rectangular vision-obscuring paper flaps in place over his ears.

Mandane-Ortiz posted images of the hats on Facebook, earning the students worldwide attention (and potentially some job offers). Pupils at another school in the Philippines, Palawan State University, even followed suit with their own handmade anti-cheating hats.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, as they say, except if you’re copying someone else’s exam answers.

These wireless earbuds have a unique, open design that separates them from competitors like Apple’s AirPods. We liked the lightweight and innovative design of these headphones and found that they fit comfortably and securely in the ear. The earbuds also have excellent voice-calling capabilities, are IPX4 waterproof and offer good sound for open earbuds. They also feature built-in Alexa and can last up to 23 hours with the charging case.

These buds aren’t the best at drowning out noise because of their open design. So for those looking for noise-canceling headphones, these may not be the top pick — you can see our list of the best noise-canceling headphones here. This story is part of Focal Point iPhone 2022, CNET’s collection of news, tips and advice around Apple’s most popular product.

The iPhone used to show the percentage of battery left directly in the status bar, viewable from anywhere on your phone, which offered a handy way to quickly glance at your battery level — until Apple removed the feature with the release of the iPhone X. The reason? Apple needed to make room for the various sensors in the minimized notch at the time.

The battery icon was missed by many, and Apple reintroduced the battery percentage icon, albeit redesigned, with the release of iOS 16, which you can download right now. Many, including me, are happy about the resurrected battery indicator, but others are upset — in part because they won’t be receiving the battery icon on their phone, even if they update to iOS 16. Others are upset because they feel Apple could have done more to make the icon useful.

Read moreiOS 16 Won’t Run on Every iPhone. Will It Work on Yours?

However, the new battery percentage feature isn’t supported on every iPhone out there — for now. Apple just yesterday released iOS 16.1, which is currently only for developers, and it brings the battery percentage feature to every iPhone that runs iOS 16. Here’s what you need to know.

What’s the deal with the battery status meter on the iPhone?

iPhones used to include the exact percentage of your battery right in the status bar. But after the release of the iPhone X, which introduced the notch — the black bar at the top of your device that houses a speaker and camera — there wasn’t enough screen real estate left to keep the battery percentage in the status bar, so Apple nixed the feature.

Sure, you can swipe down from the top right of your iPhone to view the exact percentage in the Control Center, but that means you can’t glance at the battery percentage from within any app or from the home screen. And it’s nearly impossible to gauge the exact percentage from just the battery icon, which is not good if your iPhone is close to dying.

iOS 16 reintroduces the battery percentage number back in the status bar, inside of the existing battery icon.

Apple’s Newest Releases

Which iPhone models won’t be getting the battery percentage feature back?

Not all iPhone users with iOS 16 will see the new battery percentage feature in the status bar, which is frustrating for some. Although there hasn’t been an official statement as to why certain models are excluded from the feature, it seems to be because of lower pixel density for some of the devices, and lack of space for others.

According to this Apple support page, the following models don’t support the feature:

The only way you can view your battery percentage on iPhones that don’t support the new feature is to either add a battery widget to your lock screen/home screen or swipe down from the top right of your iPhone to view the battery percentage next to the battery icon (instead of inside it).

However, the new battery percentage feature will come to the iPhone XR, iPhone 11 and iPhone Minis with iOS 16.1, which was released Wednesday for developers. You can check out how to download it here, but it should be pushed out to the general public soon enough.

Even some people who do have the feature are frustrated with its design

To top it off, not everyone is happy with the design of the new battery percentage design. Although the battery percentage itself is always visible in the status bar on supported devices, the battery icon itself always shows as full, whether the phone is idle, charging or on low power mode — only the color changes. So it can be a bit confusing if you just glance at it.

The only time the design really changes is when the battery reaches 20% or less — the battery icon then shows as depleted, or about a fifth full, and turns red.

On Twitter, Mikael Johansson created a mockup that shows the battery icon changing along with the percentage. Thousands of people have liked the tweet and many have agreed it’s an improvement over the current design.

Nothing wrong with what Apple released but I think I might’ve preferred something like Alternative A for the battery indicator pic.twitter.com/a44879RIFk

How to get the battery percentage back in the status bar on iOS 16

Regardless of your thoughts on the design, you should at least take a chance on the battery percentage feature if your iPhone supports it.

To view your battery percentage in the status bar of your iPhone, all you need to do is upgrade to iOS 16. You can wait for your iPhone to alert you with a pop-up notice, or force an update manually by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

Once you update, you should see the percentage in the battery icon in the top-right corner of your screen — from anywhere on your iPhone. That way you can keep a close eye on when your iPhone is topped off or close to running out of battery, and when you should start charging it.

Although the setting is turned on by default, you can go to Settings > Battery and toggle on the Battery Percentage option to make sure it works. When your device is charging, the battery icon will turn completely green, showing you the percentage, while being in Low Power Mode will turn the battery icon completely yellow, but again with the percentage inside.

If you toggle the Battery Percentage feature off, you’ll remove the numbers from the status bar and revert back to the old battery icon design.

Preorders for iPhone 14 are open, and the phone itself will be available Friday, Sept. 16. For more, learn everything Apple unveiled at its “Far Out” event last week.

Adobe is acquiring Figma, a leading web design platform, for $20 billion in stock and cash, the company said Thursday. Adobe touted Figma’s widely used collaborative design tools in its announcement. Figma had been the strongest competitor for Adobe’s own web design tool, Adobe XD.

Figma will continue to operate autonomously while also having ways to accelerate its growth, Figma CEO Dylan Field said in a blog post Thursday.

“We will have the opportunity to incorporate their expertise in imaging, photography, illustration, video, 3D and font technology to the Figma platform,” Field said. Figma will continue to be free for educational uses.

The transaction is expected to close in 2023, pending approval from regulators and Figma’s shareholders.

There’s always a struggle between size and battery life when it comes to action cams. The smaller the camera, the smaller the battery needs to be. And even if you have a bigger battery, that doesn’t guarantee long recording times. But if there’s one company that can find the right balance, it’s DJI. After years of squeezing out a few extra minutes of flight for its drones, DJI knows batteries.

The company’s latest action cam, the Osmo Action 3, uses a new 1,770-mAh Extreme battery. It’s a reasonably small and lightweight battery, but DJI says it’ll get up to 160 minutes of recording time. Granted, that’s recording 1080p video at 30 frames per second with its front and rear touchscreens off and electronic image stabilization disabled and at a temperature of 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius).

The Action 3 has front and rear touch displays.

Josh Goldman/CNET

Still, you should be able to get a good amount of video out of a single charge, and it can be quickly charged to 80% in 18 minutes or 100% in 50 minutes. The pack is also designed to work in cold temps, down to as low as minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 20 degrees Celsius). DJI also made a clever three-battery charging case that can double as a power bank for charging a phone or other devices.

The other major feature is something carried over from the Action 2. That model has a modular design that uses magnetic clips to help hold the modules together and connect to quick-release mounts and accessories. Those magnetic quick-release mounts are what DJI uses for the Osmo Action 3. A mount can connect directly to the bottom of the camera, or you can slip it into the included protective frame and attach a mount to the side of the camera for vertical video.

DJI Osmo Action 3 mounted vertically in its quick-release mount sitting on a stone wall with plants in the background.DJI Osmo Action 3 mounted vertically in its quick-release mount sitting on a stone wall with plants in the background.

The Action 3 is designed to be mounted horizontally or vertically.

Josh Goldman/CNET

The rest of the Osmo Action 3 isn’t too different from its predecessor with one key exception. Behind the lens is a 1/1.7-inch sensor and with it, the camera can shoot video at up to 4K at 120 frames per second, 2.7K at 120fps and 1080p at 240fps. Time-lapse and hyperlapse (aka motion time-lapse) clips are also possible at up to 4K and live stream at up to 1080p at 30fps. However, overheating was an issue with the Action 2, so DJI redesigned the heat management for the Action 3 and it can record 4K at 60fps continuously until the battery dies, DJI said.

The company’s RockSteady electronic image stabilization and HorizonSteady tilt correction are available too. There’s a HorizonBalancing feature that DJI calls a middle ground between those two, correcting horizontal tilt within 45 degrees for 4K videos at 60fps.

$329 at Store.dji

The Osmo Action 3 is available in two different packages. The $329 (£309, AU$519) Standard Combo includes the camera, an Extreme battery, the protective frame, a quick-release adapter mount and a flat adhesive base. For $439 (£399, AU$719), you can get the Adventure Combo which adds two more batteries and the multifunctional battery case as well as one more quick-release adapter to the Standard package.
