Uber’s computer network was breached Thursday, leading the ride-hailing giant to take several internal communications and engineering systems offline as it investigated the hack, as reported earlier by The New York Times.

Uber said its investigation is ongoing as of Friday at 10:30 a.m. PT, but said there’s “no evidence that the incident involved access to sensitive user data.”

Uber, Uber Eats, Uber Freight and Uber Drive were all up and running on Friday, and Uber is now bringing back online its internal software tools.

Uber had said in an earlier statement that it is investigating a cybersecurity incident and is in contact with law enforcement officials. The FBI is reportedly helping Uber investigate the incident. Uber didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on this.

On Thursday, the company had instructed employees not to use workplace messaging app Slack, the report said, citing two employees. Other internal systems were also inaccessible, the Times reported.

According to the Times, shortly before Slack was taken offline Thursday afternoon, Uber employees received a message on the app that read: “I announce I am a hacker and Uber has suffered a data breach.” The message also listed several internal databases that the hacker claimed had been compromised, the Times reported.

The hacker, who said he was 18 years old, said he was motivated by what he called weak security and provided screenshots of internal Uber systems to prove his access, the Times reported.

The hacker sent the message through the app after compromising a worker’s account, Uber told the Times. The hacker apparently was also able to gain access to other internal systems, posting an explicit photo on an internal information page for employees, the newspaper reported.

Uber has been hacked before. In 2018, it agreed to a $148 million settlement over a 2016 data breach the ride-hailing service failed to disclose. Hackers were able to steal data on 57 million drivers and riders, including personal information such as names, email addresses and driver’s license numbers.

Rather than publicly disclosing the hack, which companies are required to do within a certain number of days in states like California, Uber paid the hackers $100,000 to delete the information and had them sign a nondisclosure agreement.

Joe Sullivan, who served as Uber’s security chief from April 2015 to November 2017, was indicted in 2020 for allegedly covering up the breach. Sullivan described the payment as a bug bounty reward, which companies often pay to researchers who discover security flaws, but prosecutors said the payment was more of a cover-up than a bounty reward.

A top European court has largely upheld a record fine imposed on Google by the European Commission over antitrust violations related to its Android mobile operating system. The EU charged that Google was stifling competition by using its Android dominance to forcibly require phone makers to include apps for Google services.

The Alphabet-owned Google challenged the 2018 fine, but on Wednesday the European Court of Justice’s General Court mostly confirmed the decision to penalize the company more than 4 billion euros ($3.99 billion).

“In order better to reflect the gravity and duration of the infringement,” it’s appropriate to impose a fine of 4.125 billion euros on Google, the court said (PDF). That’s slightly lower than the original 4.34 billion euro penalty, as the court said its reasoning differed “in certain respects” from the commission’s.

“We are disappointed that the court did not annul the decision in full,” Google said in a statement. “Android has created more choice for everyone, not less, and supports thousands of successful businesses in Europe and around the world.”

The fine — still a record — is one of three the EU antitrust watchdog imposed on Google between 2017 and 2019, totaling about $8.5 billion.

The EU found that Google’s agreements with phone makers stifled competition and reduced choices for consumers because companies such as Huawei, Samsung and LG are completely dependent on Android. The agreements required that certain Google apps and search tools, as well as the Google Play Store, must be preinstalled on Android devices, which allows Google to preserve and strengthen its dominance in search.

Google has previously argued that by providing Android software free of charge to device makers, it’s enabled the proliferation of cheap phones and, in doing so, has increased access to online services. The company also pointed out that if users want to download rival services, they’re free to do so.

EU consumer group BEUC called the ruling “crucial” in a statement, adding that “it confirms that Europe’s consumers must enjoy meaningful choice between search engines and browsers on their phones and tablets.”

Google will have to face the bulk of a multistate antitrust lawsuit that accuses the tech giant of reaching an illegal deal with online ad rival Facebook.

The lawsuit, filed in 2020 by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and 16 states or territories, alleges that Google entered into a secret agreement, codenamed Jedi Blue, with Facebook in 2018 that would allegedly give the social network an illegal advantage in the search giant’s online advertising auctions. Facebook is not a party to the lawsuit.

Google had sought dismissal of the lawsuit, arguing that the conduct the states described is legal. However, US District Judge P. Kevin Castel for Southern New York ruled Tuesday that lawsuit can proceed, although he did dismiss one claim that alleged the deal was an unlawful restraint of trade, saying “there is nothing inexplicable or suspicious” in what led the companies to enter into the agreement.

Google’s massive ad tech business has been under scrutiny from regulators in the US and EU. Google reportedly offered to allow third-party ad platforms on YouTube in an attempt to settle an ongoing antitrust investigation by the European Union without paying a hefty fine.

Google said Castel’s decision highlighted the flaws in Paxton’s lawsuit.

“As we’ve long said, advertising technology is a fiercely competitive industry — and our products increase choice for publishers, advertisers and consumers while enabling small businesses to affordably find new customers,” Google said in a statement.

Paxton’s office didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The original lawsuit accused Alphabet-owned Google of harming competitors by engaging in “false, deceptive, or misleading acts” while operating its online ad exchange. It also alleged that Facebook illegally teamed up with the search giant, one of it biggest competitors in digital advertising.

Purported renderings of the forthcoming Apple Watch Pro were published on the internet Monday, offering credence to rumors that the device will add a new button.

There seems to be an extra button her, but for what?

91Mobiles

The renders, obtained by notable leaker 91Mobiles, appear to show an extra button on the left side of the frame near a speaker vent, although the purpose of the extra button isn’t known. The renders also show a large, flat display with slim bezels, perhaps confirming reports that the device will have a larger 1.99-inch display and a larger 47mm casing.

Apple didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Reports have circulated that Apple will launch a high-end Apple Watch marketed toward athletes with a larger display, sturdier design and longer battery life.

If Apple does plan to release an Apple Watch Pro this year, we’ll likely find out about it at the company’s “Far Out” launch event, which is scheduled for Wednesday.

A Southwest Airlines pilot was captured in a TikTok video threatening to cancel a flight if a passenger didn’t stop sending unsolicited nude photos to other passengers.

The incident, involving Apple’s AirDrop file transfer service, occurred during a flight in late August from Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

“So here’s the deal, if this continues while we’re on the ground I’m going to have to pull back to the gate, everybody’s going to have to get off, we’re going to have to get security involved and … vacation is going to be ruined,” the pilot can be heard telling passengers over the plane’s intercom.

The video, which has been viewed more than 3 million times on TikTok, was recorded and posted by Teighlor Marsalis. She told CNN she’d just boarded the plane when she received a notification of a file being shared on AirDrop, which allows iPhone owners to share files, photos, videos and links with other nearby iPhones.

@teighmars @robloxsouthwestair takes airdropping nudes very seriously. #AEJeansSoundOn#WorldPrincessWeek♬ original sound – Teighlor Marsalis

Marsalis said she declined the file but that two women nearby who’d accepted it showed her the image.

“It was a nude man that had AirDropped himself to everyone,” she said.

Marsalis said she started recording her video after another passenger alerted a flight attendant, who then proceeded to the cockpit to alert the pilot. After attendants checked on passengers and conducted safety presentations, the flight departed, she said.

Cyberflashing, the practice of sending unsolicited and explicit photos to nearby strangers, disproportionately targets young women. More than half of women between the ages of 18 and 29 have received unsolicited images, according to a 2017 survey by the Pew Research Center.

Southwest Airlines said it couldn’t confirm the authenticity of the video but said it considers the comfort of passengers a chief concern.

“The safety, security and wellbeing of customers and employees is the Southwest team’s highest priority at all times. When made aware of a potential problem, our employees address issues to support the comfort of those traveling with us,” Southwest Airlines said in statement.

Recent applications for a variety of trademarks that include the word “reality” suggest Apple is stocking up on potential names for its much-rumored augmented reality headset, Bloomberg reported Sunday. The applications, for names such as “Reality One,” “Reality Pro” and “Reality Processor,” were filed in the US, EU, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Costa Rica and Uruguay.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has indicated that the company is preparing for a big future in AR, calling it a technology that’s potentially as important as the iPhone. While Apple has made no secret of its interest in the emerging AR sector, it’s been mum on its rumored AR/VR headset.

Apple hasn’t made any headset announcements, but it is expected to unveil its headset during a January 2023 event, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The iPhone maker is looking to ship 1.5 million units of the face-mounted device in 2023 at a price of up to $2,000.

The trademarks weren’t registered to Apple by name but rather to Immersive Health Solutions, believed to be an Apple shell company, according to Bloomberg. Immersive Health Solutions was in turn registered by the Corporation Trust Co., another Delaware shell corporation typically used for filings by firms looking to avoid detection.

Rumors suggest the Apple VR headset will have 8K displays, eye-tracking cameras, external cameras for a mixed-reality experience and Apple’s M1 computer processor, like the one found in 2020’s MacBook Air and last year’s MacBook Pro.

Apple didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Jay Y. Lee was granted a presidential pardon Friday in South Korea, a largely symbolic move that may allow him to take control of the electronics giant.

Lee, Samsung’s de facto leader, was granted parole and released from prison in August 2021, after serving a two and a half years on a five-year sentence on bribery, perjury and embezzlement charges. The pardon, granted by South Korean President President Yoon Suk-yeol, comes amid rising fears of global inflation and continuing supply chain issues in the wake of China’s zero-tolerance policy toward COVID-19.

“In a bid to overcome the economic crisis by vitalizing the economy, Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, whose suspended prison term was ended recently, will be reinstated,” the Korean government said in a statement reported by Bloomberg.

Lee was Samsung’s vice chairman and had acted as the company’s de facto head since his father, Lee Kun-Hee, suffered a heart attack in 2014. He faced up to 12 years in prison after being charged with bribery in 2017. The case was part of a corruption scandal that led to the impeachment of former South Korean president Park Geun-hye.

Lee, who had always denied the allegations in court, wouldn’t be able to work for five years and faced restrictions on overseas travel under Korean law. But the country’s Justice Department reportedly had the power to grant exceptions.

The move comes in the wake of China’s zero-tolerance policy against the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to lockdowns in some of the country’s most populated areas and manufacturing constraints across the industry.

Samsung didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Samsung notched its best second-quarter profit since 2018, on strong sales of chips amid a cooling smartphone market.

The Korea-based company said Wednesday that its operating profit for the three-month period ended June 30 came in at 14.1 trillion won ($10.8 billion), an increase of 12% compared with the same time period last year. The company also posted record second-quarter revenue of 77.2 trillion won ($59.1 billion), an increase of more than 21%.

Earnings in the company’s mobile business declined compared with the first quarter due to the rising costs of components, but revenue increased 31% year over year on strong sales of flagship models such as the Galaxy S22 series and the Galaxy Tab S8 series.

Samsung said it expects the smartphone market to hold steady or show single-digit growth in the second half of the year. The company also said it plans to expand flagship sales with a line of new foldables, which the company is expected to unveil at its next Unpacked event, next month.

Smartphones are feeling the heat of economic downturn fears, with demand shrinking in the second quarter. Smartphone vendors shipped 270 million handsets in the second quarter, a 9% decline over the first quarter.

“Economic headwinds, sluggish demand, and inventory pileup have resulted in vendors rapidly reassessing their portfolio strategies for the rest of 2022,” Canalys Research Analyst Runar Bjørhovde said in a report earlier this month. “The oversupplied mid-range is an exposed segment for vendors to focus on adjusting new launches, as budget-constrained consumers shift their device purchases toward the lower end.”

Samsung is best known as a phone and TV maker, but it also sells more memory chips than any other company on the planet. In the second quarter, Samsung benefited from continued strong demand for server memory while demand for consumer products weakened, resulting in memory shipments coming in below guidance. Still, sales in Samsung memory units rose 18% year over year.

However, Samsung cautioned that demand for consumer products and PCs will remain weak.

“For PC, there is a possibility that the slump in demand may expand to enterprise segments,” Samsung said in a statement. “Nevertheless, there are also chances of consumer demand getting stimulated during the year-end promotional season.”

Samsung’s strong quarter came while chipmakers face a glut, as demand for smartphones and PCs declines. Prices for DRAM chips, commonly used in PCs, was expected to decline about 5% in the second quarter, according to market researcher TrendForce, with another 10% decline forecast for the third quarter.

Prices for NAND Flash memory, widely used in portable consumer devices like digital cameras, cell phones and USB flash drives, was expected to decline about 5% this quarter, with as much as a 10% decline in the third quarter, TrendForce predicted.

T-Mobile has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit filed by customers over a data breach revealed last year that exposed highly sensitive personal information belonging to an estimated 76.6 million people.

The wireless carrier said in a court filing Friday it will pay $350 million to settle the customers’ claims and an additional $150 million to upgrade its data protection. The breach, disclosed in August, exposed information such as customer names, Social Security numbers, phone numbers, addresses and dates of birth.

The settlement proposal, which was filed in federal court in Kansas City, Missouri, still requires a judge’s approval. In the filing, T-Mobile said the proposal wasn’t an acknowledgement of wrongdoing.

The breach is one of at least four to hit the wireless carrier since 2015. It came to light after a user on an underground forum claimed to be selling the personal data of more than 100 million people swiped from T-Mobile’s servers.

“As we continue to invest time, energy and resources in addressing this challenge, we are pleased to have resolved this consumer class-action filing,” T-Mobile said in a statement posted to its website.

Samsung expects another bump in its operating profit in the second quarter, the latest in a string of strong financial performances from the electronics giant.

The Korea-based company on Wednesday predicted its operating profit for the three-month period ended June 30 would come in around 14 trillion won ($10.7 billion), an increase of about 11% compared with the same time period last year. It also said it expects its revenue to increase by nearly 21%, to 77 trillion won ($58.9 billion).
