Biden denounces decision

Democratic President Joe Biden denounced the decision, saying it “contradicts both common sense and the Constitution, and should deeply trouble us all.”

“We must do more as a society — not less — to protect our fellow Americans,” Biden said. “I call on Americans across the country to make their voices heard on gun safety.”

Despite a growing call for limits on firearms after two horrific mass shootings in May, the court sided with advocates who said the US Constitution guarantees the right to own and carry guns.

The ruling is the first by the court in a major Second Amendment case in over a decade, when it ruled in 2008 that Americans have a right to keep a gun at home for self-defense.

It was a stunning victory for the National Rifle Association lobby group, which brought the case along with two New York men who had been denied gun permits.

“Today’s ruling is a watershed win for good men and women all across America and is the result of a decades-long fight the NRA has led,” NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre said in a statement.

“The right to self-defense and to defend your family and loved ones should not end at your home.”

New York Governor Kathy Hochul called it a “dark day,” while California’s leader Gavin Newsom termed the decision “shameful.”

Justice Clarence Thomas wrote the majority opinion and was joined by the other five conservatives on the nine-member court, three of whom were nominated by former Republican president Donald Trump.

In another letter dated June 22, NASA’s lawyer asked RR Auction to work with the current owner of the material to return it to the federal government.

The Apollo 11 mission brought more than 47 pounds (21.3 kilograms) of lunar rock back to Earth. Some was fed to insects, fish and other small creatures to see if it would kill them.

The cockroaches that were fed moon dust were brought to the University of Minnesota where entomologist Marion Brooks dissected and studied them.

“I found no evidence of infectious agents,” Brooks, who died in 2007, told the Minneapolis Tribune for an October 1969 story. She found no evidence that the moon material was toxic or caused any other ill effects in the insects, according to the article.

But the moon rock and the cockroaches were never returned to NASA, instead displayed at Brooks’ home. Her daughter sold them in 2010, and now they are up for sale again by a consignor who RR did not disclose.

Kshama Bindu, a young private firm employee, is all set to tie the knot to herself in what is called “sologamy”, or self-marriage.

Pheras, indoor, and a honeymoon in Goa are part of Kshama’s plan for her wedding, which will be held according to Hindu customs and rituals.

Calling Kshama mentally ill, the BJP leader said that nowhere in Hindu culture it is written that a boy can marry a boy and a girl can marry a girl.

A priest booked to solemnise marriage

Meanwhile, Bindu, who identifies as bisexual, has claimed that her marriage will be the first instance of sologamy in India. When she told her parents about her decision to marry herself, they were astonished at first but agreed later.

Both her parents are engineers. Her father is in South Africa and her mother stays in Ahmedabad.

Kshama has already booked a priest to solemnise her marriage.

However, legal experts have said that sologamy does not have any legal backing in India.

“As per Indian laws, you cannot marry yourself. There have to be two persons in a marriage. Sologamy is not legal,” senior High Court advocate Krishnakant Vakharia told PTI.

“It’s important that people who want to go out and celebrate gay pride, LGBTQ pride, to continue to go and plan to do so,” Andy Seale, strategies adviser at WHO’s department of sexually transmitted infections programmes, said at a WHO social media briefing.

“Most of these events – the official events – are outdoors, they’re family-friendly. We don’t see any real reason to be concerned about the enhanced likelihood of transmission in those contexts.”

Events linked to many of the current cases took place in enclosed spaces such as nightclubs, he added.

Upcoming pride marches are scheduled for New York on June 26 or in Berlin on July 23, among other places.

Another WHO official said it was unlikely for the monkeypox outbreak outside Africa to lead to a pandemic, adding it remains unclear if infected people who are not displaying symptoms can transmit the disease.

More than 300 suspected and confirmed cases of monkeypox have been reported in May, mostly in Europe.

What is monkeypox

Monkeypox is an infectious disease that is usually mild and is endemic in parts of the west and central Africa. It is spread by close contact, so it can be relatively easily contained through measures such as self-isolation and hygiene.

Most of the cases reported so far have been detected in the UK, Spain, and Portugal.

“The vast majority of reported cases so far have no established travel links to an endemic area and have presented through primary care or sexual health services,” the UN agency said.

Based on currently available information, cases have mainly but not exclusively been identified amongst men who have sex with men (MSM) seeking care in primary care and sexual health clinics, said WHO.

Water woes of the locals continue to date

Out of 76 urban centres across eight districts in Maharashtra’s Marathwada region, only seven receive water supply daily, as per a report prepared by the Aurangabad divisional commissioner’s office, a grim figure that highlights acute water shortage in the arid region in the central part of the state. 

The gap between two water supplies ranges from one to 15 days. The highest gap of 15 days is in Badnapur town of Jalna district, said the report.

The 76 urban centres mentioned in the report have either a municipal council or a nagar panchayat. According to the report, there are only seven tehsil-level towns in the region where residents receive water supply daily.

Six of them are in the Nanded district – Kundalwadi, Kinwat, Dharmabad, Biloli, Ardhapur, and Himayatnagar. The seventh town is Paithan in Aurangabad district, which is located on the banks of the Godavari river, it said.

Latur district, which received water through rail wagons in 2016, has no town which gets water every day.

The condition of Badnapur town in Jalna is the most acute as it receives water supply once in 15 days, followed by Ausa (in Latur), which gets supply after a gap of 11 days, and Devni (Latur), which gets water after an interval of 10 days, the report said.

Earlier this week, the BJP organised a ‘Jalakrosh’ morcha in Aurangabad (where residents get water once a week) over the water shortage issue. Senior party leader Devendra Fadnavis and two Union ministers took part in the agitation. Asked about the report, water expert Pradeep Purandare blamed politicians and rapid urbanisation for the prevailing situation.

The man was arrested on Tuesday after an FIR was lodged at Beta 2 police station on the complaint of a local a day after the incident came to the fore.

Idols at a temple found vandalised

According to the police, three idols kept at a temple were found vandalised on Monday morning. The temple did not have any priests, and acting on the complaint, police were deployed at the site as a preventive measure, they said.

“The matter was investigated and accused Vinod Kumar was arrested on Tuesday. The tools used by him to damage the idols were also recovered,” a police spokesperson said.

Wife and child not been keeping well

“During questioning, the accused told the police that his wife and five-year-old child have not been keeping well for the past three-four years. He said that he had been praying to the Gods but their health did not improve. Recently, his aunt also passed away, leaving him severely depressed,” the spokesperson said.

All these events led Kumar to damage the idols, the police said, claiming the accused had confessed to committing the crime using a hammer and a chisel, both of which have been recovered.

A case was lodged against the accused under Indian Penal Code Section 295 (defiling place of worship), the police said, adding that he has been sent to jail.

Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority, which confirmed flyadeal’s announcement Saturday, has touted expanding roles for women in the aviation sector in recent years.

In 2019, the authority announced the first flight with a female Saudi co-pilot. Saudi officials are trying to engineer a rapid expansion of the aviation sector that would turn the kingdom into a global travel hub.

Goals include more than tripling annual traffic to 330 million passengers by the end of the decade, drawing $100 billion in investments in the sector by 2030, establishing a new national flag carrier, constructing a new “mega airport” in Riyadh, and moving up to five million tonnes of cargo each year.

Yet industry analysts question whether Saudi-based airlines will be able to compete against established regional heavyweights such as Emirates and Qatar Airways.

The kingdom’s de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has overseen reforms including lifting a decades-long ban on women driving and the easing of so-called “guardianship” rules that give men arbitrary authority over female relatives.

The participation of Saudi women in economic activities reached the highest level in the history of the Kingdom at 35.6%, according to a local media report.

Abdullah bin Nasser Abu Thanin, Deputy Minister of Human Resources and Social Development for the Labor Sector pointed out that, the overall economic participation rate of Saudi citizens has risen to 51.5%, noting that the number of Saudis working in the private sector has exceeded two million men and women.

For decades, Saudi Arabia had one of the lowest rates of female labour force participation in the world. The Middle-East region has always lagged behind the rest of the world when it comes to women and the job market.

A BJP worker from Madhya Pradesh who was seen assaulting an elderly man on video has been arrested after massive public outrage.

The attacker, identified as Dinesh Kushwaha, is a BJP worker and husband of a former BJP corporator.

The incident

Bhanwarlal Jain went with his mother Pistabai, the sarpanch of the village, and other family members to Chittorgarh in Rajasthan for prayers on May 15.

Bhanwarlal Jain, who was differently-abled and had trouble with memory, went missing from Rajasthan. His family lodged a missing complaint at the police station there.

Later, they received information that a body had been found in Manasa in Neemuch district of MP. They reached there and identified the body. On Friday, they performed the last rites.

When the family saw the video, they lodged a police complaint.

The villagers got angry after seeing the video and demanded that strict action be taken against the perpetrator.

The Christchurch killer had warned in a manifesto of a “Great Replacement” of white Christians of European descent by Blacks, Jews, Muslims, Latinos and others, a theory that has found an increasing echo in American right-wing politics and on cable news.

Lifting often word-for-word from the rambling text, Gendron produced a chilling 180-page manifesto of his own — in which he stated his goal: to “kill as many Blacks as possible.”

Gendron himself came from a rural town in New York state that had a very small number of non-white residents.

He learned his hate almost exclusively online, a pattern of “radicalisation” that law enforcement authorities say has only increased in recent years to become a major threat to the United States.

Gendron drove 200 miles (320 kilometres) to the Tops market in Buffalo to carry out his attack in a neighbourhood he knew had a large African American population, during the busiest shopping period of the week.

Living in an all-white town

The 18-year-old murder suspect is the son of two New York state engineers, Paul and Pamela Gendron.

They live in a modest two-story home, with a large, well-manicured lawn, down a quiet rural lane in Conklin, New York.

Nested on the winding Susquehanna River and surrounded by forests and small farms, Conklin has a handful of trucking and distribution centres, and the headquarters for an electronics company.

Its population of 5,000, according to the 2020 census, was 96 per cent white and just 0.6 per cent African-American.

Gendron finished high school in June 2021 after a rough 18 months of dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic, when students were often isolated in their homes with classes online and personal interactions more than ever confined to social media.

Law enforcement officials said that last year, before graduating, Gendron said his plans for the future were undertaking a murder-suicide.

He was given a psychiatric assessment and claimed he had been joking. Released after a few days, his case was apparently then forgotten until the massacre on Saturday.

Gendron spelled out in meticulous detail his plans for the attacks, choosing the target, selecting his arms, body armour, and other equipment, and how he would live-stream it with a helmet-mounted camera, just as Tarrant had done.

Festival observed globally, PM Modi in Nepal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday offered prayers at the sacred Maya Devi temple in Nepal on the occasion of Buddha Purnima.

He was accompanied by his Nepalese counterpart Sher Bahadur Deuba during his visit to the historic temple, the birth place of Gautam Buddha.

“Beginning the Nepal visit with prayers at the sacred Maya Devi Temple, Lumbini,” the Office of the Prime Minister of India tweeted.
