Halloween is the perfect time to indulge in the horror genre. Whether you’re into movies, TV shows or braving a Stephen King novel, horror’s scares hit different when the nights draw in. And creepy video games are no different. (Check out our full list of scary PC and console games.)

We’ve pulled together a list of mobile horror games for Android, iPhone and iPad that’ll make your spooky season extra chilling. 

Oxenfree

Free with a Netflix subscription

A group of friends hanging out on a beach take a turn for the worse when the teens accidentally open a ghostly rift. Soon the group is fighting for survival, struggling through time loops, and doubting if everyone is truly who they say they are. 

I can’t speak highly enough of this choice-based game. Oxenfree calls itself a “supernatural teen thriller,” but deftly avoids tropes and cliches, providing characters with depth and a fascinating, eerie plot. It’s a quick game you could play in one sitting, but there’s multiple endings so you can always go back.

After Netflix purchased Night School Studios, Oxenfree is available to play with a subscription to the streaming service at no extra cost.

What Remains of Edith Finch

iOS: $5 

What Remains of Edith Finch is a dark, emotional journey through the seemingly cursed Finch family tree. Edith, the last living member of her family, returns to explore her massive ancestral home. The house seems to go on forever and is packed with rooms and secret passages to explore. 

The game plays out like a series of short stories, giving the player a snapshot of Edith’s ancestors. As you progress, Edith maps out her family tree in a notebook. What Remains of Edith Finch is a walking simulator and a mystery puzzle game, and it’s engrossing enough to play in one sitting. 

Without giving too much away, the game is dark, with themes of human and animal death, suicide, mental illness and more. It’s a good game, but if you’re triggered by any of these topics (or topics that you imagine might be related), know that you’ll encounter a lot of them in this game.

Gone Home 

iOS: $5

Gone Home will suck you in from the very start. You play as Katie Greenbriar, home from a year-long trip in Europe. When you arrive home (in the middle of a thunderstorm no less), your family has seemingly vanished. Explore all the nooks and crannies of the sprawling house. Collect clues and unravel what happened to your family while you were gone. 

The tension created in the game through sheer mystery is almost more frightening than if there were jump scares. As a die-hard mystery game fan, I found Gone Home immersive, engrossing and emotional. While playing, I found myself turning on all the lights in the game to stave off the unnerving feeling of being alone in this deserted house. I felt sadness and frustration as I opened doors and found no one behind them, but the emotional payoff was so bittersweet and satisfying. 

It’s a bit cumbersome sometimes to play it on iPad and could benefit from adding controller support in the future. But it’s definitely still worth a play.

Very Little Nightmares

iOS and Android: $7

Very Little Nightmares is the prequel to the console game Little Nightmares. The Girl in the Yellow Raincoat wakes up in a mysterious mansion and must navigate enemies, unstable architecture and solve puzzles to make it out. I felt Very Little Nightmares was a tad less creepy than the console games, so if you’re not a huge horror fan, this is a tamer game that you can safely check out.

Limbo

Limbo, a side-scrolling platformer that taps into the spooky black-and-white aesthetic, is every bit as creepy as it looks. Waking up as a small boy in a mysterious forest, you have to solve puzzles to navigate through nightmarish chiaroscuro landscapes filled with horrific monsters and traps.

Inside 

iOS: Free

Inside, from the makers of Limbo, is a gorgeous, eerie puzzle platformer with an engaging story and creepy, moody background music. Similar to What Remains of Edith Finch, there are some dark and unsettling elements of manipulation and body horror that may be triggering for some. You play as a faceless young boy in an isolated, cold world of muted colors. It doesn’t take long to realize that the other characters you come across in the games don’t have the best intentions and there are dark secrets to uncover. Despite the ambiguity of the main character, the way the developers convey his sadness and exhaustion is unmistakable, adding another layer of atmosphere to the game.

Sara is Missing

Free on iOS and Android

Sara is Missing is a relatively short mobile game, but it’s really immersive. You find a missing girl’s phone, and the app displays as if your smartphone is hers, complete with alerts, texts and error messages.

Once you unlock Sara’s phone, you’ll be plunged into a world of lies, mystery and secrets. Look through text messages and emails, retrieve lost files and data, watch suspicious videos, and search through pictures to piece together Sara’s last moments. Your search is guided by the Siri-like mobile assistant Iris, which might be hiding a few secrets of its own. The game has multiple choice-based endings, hidden subplots and quite a few jump scares.

I Am Innocent

Free on iOS and Android

I Am Innocent is a detective game similar to Sara is Missing. However, the gameplay is longer and more intricate. You’ll investigate a series of murders that somehow link to the disappearance of your sister. No one is who they seem as you dig deeper and unearth secrets.

As in real life, how you interact with the characters can improve or hurt your relationships. You start getting messages from a mysterious person named Ghost, who connects you to a kidnapped person named Finch who needs your help.

Use your resources to enhance photos, collect information, search archives, figure out what happened to your sister and help Finch. There are built-in Tetris-style games that, once you beat them, unlock more information.

Thimbleweed Park

iOS and Android: $10

Explore a haunted hotel, a destroyed pillow factory and an abandoned circus to figure out the secrets of the surreal town of Thimbleweed Park.

Play as Agent Ray and Junior Agent Reyes — a Mulder-and-Scully duo — or Frank the ghost, a cranky clown named Ransome, or game developer Delores. Characters can work together, or make solving the murder more difficult for others.

Thimbleweed Park is a humorous noir parody set in 1987, nostalgic in its pixelated style. If you’re looking for a more lighthearted game for this time of year, this is it.

Life is Strange

iOS and Android: Free download for episode 1, then buy individual episodes or season pass ($1-$10)

Life is Strange isn’t necessarily a scary game, but it’s worth including for its mystery and suspense. The game tells the story of a girl named Max who starts having visions of an impending disaster. Soon she learns she can bend time and might be able to use her powers to save her best friend Chloe.

When a student goes missing, Chloe and Max start investigating and learn that their hometown has a dark side. As Max changes the past, it affects the future.

The graphics in Life is Strange are beautiful, even on a smartphone screen. The plot is intricate and accompanied by a great soundtrack. The game reacts to your choices, so it can end in different ways. You can also find this game on PS4, Xbox One and PC. There is a second installment, Life is Strange: Before the Storm, if you enjoy this one.

In Murder Mystery Machine, you’re a detective out to prove yourself when a murder case comes across your desk. The game releases mysteries in episodes, and the first one is about a murdered politician. Fans of detective procedurals like Law & Order might like this game.

The more he explores, the more the secrets of his past unfurl. Neversong has six levels to explore, including Red Wind Field and Blackfork Asylum, which are all packed with bosses to defeat. The kids awaken in a creepy theme park under the sea called World’s End Land, and try to regroup. Suddenly, a floating harlequin named Pielope appears, and commands them to play a Game of Fate. As the stakes get higher, friendships are put to the test. Pielope’s psychotic game sends the Go-Getter’s Club on a dangerous adventure.

There are plenty of options for spicing up your wardrobe, including many that match specific lifestyles. Some of the best clothing subscription boxes include workout clothes, women’s clothing, men’s clothing, personal styling services, clothing rentals, maternity clothing and more. 

A quick Google search returns dozens of subscription companies — many of which have names that are probably unknown to you. Each one has its own unique features, but the services ultimately all work the same way.

Deciding on a particular service comes down to your needs, style preference and budget. Do you want a monthly box? Or will something quarterly do? Do you want to buy the clothes or use a rental service? Do you want a personal stylist or an algorithm? Do you want brand-new clothes or are you OK with curated thrift? Are you avoiding fast fashion in favor of something more sustainable? Do you have favorite brands you want to stick to? Best overall women’s clothing box experience

As a Stitch Fix user, I can report a positive experience with this particular clothing subscription option. I’m always excited when I get a box, which you can customize to come at whichever frequency fits your schedule and budget — no membership fee or monthly subscription required. My account is linked to one of my Pinterest boards, so my stylist can get more ideas of what I like, and she always leaves a thoughtful note in my box, which is a nice personalized touch. The Style Cards that come with each box also show different ways to pair the pieces (and often with basic items that are probably already in your closet). My advice, though, is not to shell out cash on an item unless you’re sure you’re going to wear it often enough.

Sign up online or in the app (available on iOS or Android). Fill out a detailed style profile, including your sizes, whether you detest or love shopping, if you wear heels, what parts of your body you like to show off, and more. Stitch Fix offers styled boxes for men, women and kids, and lets you set a preferred price point between $25 and $500 per item (kids items start at $10 per item). I picked the lowest price bracket when I signed up, and in my last box, none of my individual items were over $60. You pay a $20 styling fee when your box is assembled, you get three days to try on the clothes, and you can return anything you don’t want or like. The $20 fee applies to whatever you keep, and if you don’t keep anything, you pay only that fee. If you love your box and keep everything, you also get a 25% Buy All discount. 

Stitch Fix also has a direct buy option called Shop Your Looks. At the top of the app, click Shop between Fixes and Style. This lets you purchase individual items — pants, shoes, accessories and more — to match the piece you already have. These can be ordered without getting another box.

Best plus-size clothing subscription box

Even though the average US woman’s clothing size is between a Misses 16-18, many stores still cater to smaller sizes. This can make for an uncomfortable and discouraging shopping experience.

But Dia & Co.’s style service defies the often limited and drab choices that make up extended sizes. The service offers sizes 14-32. My box was packed with vibrant, colorful items — blouses, dresses, skirts, jeans, even a clutch. I always have trouble finding jeans that fit my waist and hips, and Dia nailed that. The box also mixed classic pieces, like a polka-dot blue wrap dress, with more colorful, patterned pieces that stepped outside my comfort zone. 

To use Dia & Co., you first take a style quiz that asks about your sizes, how clothes typically fit you, your style preferences and your preferred price range for items like tops, pants and dresses. You pay a $20 styling fee to have your box assembled. When the box arrives, you can buy what you like and return what you don’t. The $20 fee applies at checkout to whatever you keep. Best affordable clothing subscription box for men

A Menlo Club shipment combines multiple aspects of menswear: clothes, shoes and athleisure. As with many other boxes, you first take a style quiz, and then you get two clothing items per month in the mail. The Menlo clothes are casual enough to wear on their own if you’re a more subtle dresser, but the more items you acquire, the more you can put together new outfits and step outside of your fashion comfort zone. In addition, the Menlo store, which anyone can shop from without an account, often has good sales on designer brands — like $58 pants for $10. If you’re a member, you also get 25% off in the store.

My husband’s Menlo Club package consisted of dark-wash jeans and a white long-sleeve henley. His style is very laid-back, so those items would fit easily into his closet. The jeans would be easy to dress up or wear casually. Since he usually wears dark colors, the white was a nice change.

A service membership to Menlo costs $60 per month, and it’s easy to cancel (or skip a month) if you find out that it’s not for you — just make sure to do it before you’re charged that month. Menlo doesn’t offer returns on packages, but you can swap items if something doesn’t fit. You can also subscribe to a seasonal membership, where a package is delivered every three months for $75.

Stylogic is a clothing subscription service that offers women’s sizes 12 to 36. What I liked most about it was how fast the service picked up on my style based only on my style profile. I also liked that each box provides a full outfit, while other services tend to include pieces that may or may not go together. Stylogic included a skirt, a cardigan, a top, a pair of shoes and a bracelet. The outfit matched my style and was still a little adventurous.

A Stylogic box includes five items, and you get seven days to try them on. There is a $20 styling fee that applies to whatever you keep, and if you don’t keep anything, you pay only that fee. If you love your box and keep everything, you get a 20% discount.

Best men’s clothing subscription box

My husband’s sample package included three items: a gray long-sleeve shirt, a dark blue button-down and a pair of dark blue slacks. These codes each correspond to a different genre, which the algorithm uses to categorize and serve up recommendations. Instead of passively accepting the algorithm’s picks, learn how to use Netflix codes to find your own next binge-watch.

What are Netflix codes?

Netflix codes, though not a new discovery, are based on a number system the service uses to categorize films and shows by genre and subgenre. Netflix said in August that it has about 30,000 codes. Note that codes can only be used on Netflix’s website and not in its apps. 

Where to find Netflix codes

Check out netflix-codes.com for a full list. There are about 20 categories like anime, foreign movies and classic movies. Those categories are broken down into more specific subgenres. For example, horror movies — coded 8711 — houses 12 more codes like deep-sea horror movies, zombie horror movies, teen screams and more.

How to use Netflix codes

The easiest way is by installing the Better Browse for Netflix extension for Chrome. Here’s how:

At the top of the Netflix home screen, you should see a new option — Browse All — next to My List. Click that to search manually or scroll through the subgenres available. 

Another way is through the Netflix codes website. Here’s how:

1. Visit netflix-codes.com in your PC or mobile browser. 2. Find the genre or subgenre you want to explore. 3. Tap the code next to the genre or subgenre you want.4. If you’re on a device that has the Netflix app installed, the app should open and take you directly to the genre or subgenre you chose. If you don’t have the app installed, it’ll open Netflix through the browser and you can view the specific movies and shows available. 5. Tap the title you want to watch. 

You can also use the Netflix codes manually in your browser. Here’s how: 

1. Visit netflix-codes.com in your PC or mobile browser. 2. Find the genre or subgenre you want to explore. 3. In another tab, type in <http://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/INSERTNUMBER>, but replace INSERTNUMBER with the specific genre or subgenre code.4. You’ll be taken to Netflix to peruse the titles available in that section. 

From there, you can either make a mental note of the movie you want to watch and go back to the app on your preferred device, or log in to watch in your browser.

Uber on Tuesday announced its upgraded Safety Toolkit with new options designed to improve user safety. New features include Live Help, which gives riders and drivers real-time access to an ADT safety agent via call or text. For now, this feature is only available in the US.

When a user opens Live Help, the responding agent can monitor and stay in contact during an ongoing trip, as well as call 911 to provide important information for the rider or driver. 

The revamped Safety Toolkit also more widely rolls out a more discreet way to text 911. According to Uber, when a user texts 911, the Uber app will pre-populate a message with vehicle details, location and destination information for faster communication with dispatchers. The feature first rolled out in 2019, but is now expanding to nearly 60% of the US. 

Uber originally offered an in-app 911 emergency button for passengers, which launched in 2018, and rolled out later for drivers. The button was added in response to rides that reportedly ended in dangerous situations with women alleging sexual assault against drivers in multiple states.

If you find yourself having to squint in order to read or type words on your phone or computer screen, you won’t get much enjoyment out of your Apple device. Not to mention the headache-inducing blue light.

Apple has a number of accessibility features that you can explore and customize under Settings > Accessibility. With the launch of iOS 15, Apple’s Zoom feature has a new reworked accessibility feature. This tool is also available on Macs.

Here’s what you need to know about the Zoom feature.

What is Apple’s Zoom tool?

The Zoom feature lets you magnify specific parts of your screen. You can customize the feature to magnify the whole screen or a draggable windowed view. Zoom also allows you to turn on gestures like double-tapping three fingers to activate Zoom, move around your screen and change the magnification. 

Where can I find Apple’s Zoom tool?

To find Zoom, open the Settings app on your iPhone, iPad or Mac, tap Accessibility and choose Zoom.

How the Zoom tool works

Here’s what you’ll turn on or off to make the magnification feature work best for you.

• Follow Focus lets you track your selections, like your text insertion point, as well as your typing.
• Smart Typing becomes available if you turn on Follow Focus. This lets you switch to Window Zoom when the keyboard pops up. Window Zoom magnifies a section of screen in a window that you can drag around to expand what you need to see, like a digital magnifying glass. Also, once the keyboard pops up, you can double-tap to magnify where you’re typing, but the keyboard stays put. 
• Keyboard shortcuts only applies if you’ve connected an external keyboard to your iPad. If you have, simply toggle the option on to find and customize keyboard shortcuts like toggling Zoom, moving your Window and resizing your Window. If you open Zoom on your Mac, you can turn on Zoom keyboard shortcuts, scroll gestures, hover text and zoom on the touch bar. For example, toggle zoom is Option-Command-8. Pressing that combination lets you zoom in and back out. You can also choose whether you want to magnify full-screen, split-screen or picture-in-picture mode. 

• Zoom controller gives you quick access to determine what activates for single, double and triple taps on the screen. You can also choose to Show Controller on the screen. This puts a little icon on the screen that I found helpful when moving the Window around the screen. Think of it as a little map to keep you oriented when you’ve magnified a section of screen. You can choose between five different colors to make the icon more visible, as well as change the opacity. 
• Zoom Region lets you choose between a Window Zoom, Full Screen Zoom or Pinned Zoom. Window Zoom will magnify a section of your screen, but you’ll still be able to see some of the unmagnified screen and pan over that area. Full Screen Zoom eliminates the window and works like double tapping to magnify and pan around on a photo. Pinned Zoom lets you choose a specific section of the screen — top, left, right or bottom — and keeps the unpinned section in regular size. 
• Zoom filter lets you customize the magnified section’s coloring as inverted, grayscale, grayscale inverted or low-light. 
• Maximum Zoom Level is a simple slider that lets you customize the magnification anywhere from 1.2x all the way to 15x.

I found Babbel to be the most like a foreign language course you’d see in an online school curriculum. The minimalist layout of the Babbel app helps prevent a new language (French for me) from seeming overwhelming, without making it boring. Each lesson takes you through translations, and includes variations of the word or phrase, pictures and whether it’s formal or informal. If it asks you to spell a phrase, the letters are included.

You also get to see the new words you’re learning used in common conversations, listen to them (if you choose to have audio on), repeat the phrases, and learn more about verb groups. The 15-minute language lessons are easy to work into your day — whether it’s on your commute, before bed or on your lunch break. The My Activity module lets you track all your progress. 

Babbel is free, or you can subscribe to a package. A three-month subscription is $27, six months costs $46, and one year is $75.

Similar to Drops, Mondly is a fun, colorful app that has multiple features to take advantage of even if you don’t subscribe to premium. I tried beginner Hungarian on this app, and I liked how it offered to show you different conjugations if you tapped on verbs. The app packs images, translations and auditory aids to help your specific learning style. 

The instructor also speaks the words and phrases in a rather melodic way that made it easier for me to recall them (even after trying different languages on different apps). 

On top of that, Mondly is offering a huge discount on its Premium features for the next five days. Lifetime access to Premium (which includes all 41 languages) is usually $2,000 annually, but it’s dropped to $90. If you subscribe to Premium, you’ll also get access to special kids lessons.

Best for learning multiple languages

As a regular Duolingo user, I enjoy the app’s colorful interface and short, game-like exercises. The app doesn’t restrict how many languages you can try to learn at the same time (personally, I think two is a good maximum if you want to retain anything). I use Duolingo to practice Spanish and German.

To make sure you don’t get rusty on the basics, even if you’ve “mastered” a skill by reaching a higher level, the skill can still “shatter” if you don’t review it consistently. Practice the skill again and it’ll repair itself. 

I like Duolingo’s user-friendly layout, and the “streak” feature, which motivates you to keep going by tracking the number of days you’ve reached your point goal. In the app, you can access resources such as Duolingo Stories, which are short audio stories that allow you to check your comprehension skills as you go. I also subscribe to Premium for $7 per month which includes an ad-free experience, downloadable lessons, and unlimited “health.”

Best for learning to speak casually in a new language

One of my favorite parts of Memrise is the app’s use of short videos to show how real locals express different phrases in conversation. I tried the French course, and the first lesson alone let me listen to the tone of voice and casual pronunciation, as well as showing me the phrase’s literal translation and explained its gendered usage. The app also helps you spot patterns in the language to make it easier to improve your skills. 

A few lessons are available for free daily, but you can tap Upgrade in the app and choose from a monthly subscription ($9 a month), an annual subscription ($8.49 a month) or a one-time payment of $120 for a lifetime access.

Best for goal-oriented users

When you sign up for Busuu, you select the language you want to learn, and the app helps you determine how advanced you are with it and why you want to learn it, and to what level. From there, you set a daily study goal, and if you subscribe to the premium plan, it creates a study plan so you’ll reach your goal by a set date. For example, Busuu says if I study three times a week for 10 minutes a day, I’ll be pretty fluent in my chosen language in about eight months.  

Premium costs about $6 per month for a year. Even without premium, Busuu offered valuable tools if you want to learn a language. There’s also a Premium Plus option for about $7 per month for extra features. 

I tried Italian with Busuu and I liked the clean, bright layout of the app. Busuu also offers helpful reminders: The second time I logged in, it reminded me about “weak words” I needed to review to improve my vocabulary. In addition to listening to a phrase paired with a photo of the corresponding action, Busuu included helpful vocabulary tips (like that “ciao” can mean “hello” or “goodbye”).

Best for learning language musically

If you listen to any song enough, you’ll learn all the words through repetition — even if they’re in a different language. But how do you figure out what they mean? This is where the Lirica app comes in. This app is unique in how it approaches teaching Spanish and German. Instead of traditional teaching methods for learning a language, Lirica uses popular music by Latin and reggaeton artists to help you learn language and grammar. On top of learning the language, you’re also immersing yourself in the culture behind it. The app also includes facts about the artist while you’re learning.

Lirica has a one-week free trial and then it’s about $4 per month. For now, the app only offers Spanish and German, but its website says it plans to add more languages in the future.

Best for visual learners

I tried my hand at Greek on the Drops app. The app’s fun, colorful layout definitely made the language (which has its own alphabet) less intimidating. The app shows users each word in the Greek alphabet and the English alphabet, and says the word and shows an image of it. Drops is constantly adding new languages, most recently, the app brought on Ainu, an indigenous Japanese language. 

If you don’t subscribe to premium for $10 per month, you have to wait 10 hours to access another lesson, but you can check out your statistics after completing the lesson (correct answers, wrong answers and words learned) and tap on the words you’ve learned to hear them pronounced again (and see them written in the Greek alphabet). This can give you a leg up when your next lesson starts.

While not technically an app, the free Language Learning with Netflix Chrome extension can be helpful on your journey to becoming multilingual. Install the extension and click the icon to launch the catalog of movie and TV show options. You do need a subscription to Netflix though. 

Once you launch the catalog, you can pick from hundreds of titles that use movies on Netflix to help teach different languages. For example, if you wanted to work on your Spanish, select the language in the dropdown menu, along with the country where you’re using Netflix. If you’re watching in the US, the extension generates 306 titles. To watch one of the films, just click the red “Watch on Netflix” button. Depending on the language you want to learn, you might have fewer titles to pick from.

As the series or movie plays, two sets of subtitles display at the bottom of the screen. One set is your native language and the other is the one you want to learn. The words highlight as they’re spoken, like a karaoke sing-a-long. You can listen to the dialogue phrase by phrase, pause and replay as needed, access a built-in dictionary and more.

Best for learning on the go

Pimsleur is an app that offers 51 languages to learn, but delivers the information in what is basically the form of a podcast. Essentially, you’ll choose the language you want to learn and begin a 30-minute auditory lesson (which are downloadable and Alexa-compatible). The app also has a driving mode, so you can improve your language skills during long commutes without looking at a screen. 

You get a seven-day free trial. An Audio-Only subscription costs $15 a month, while a Premium subscription, which includes the 12 top selling-languages, is $20 a month. Features include reading lessons, roleplaying challenges and digital flashcards.

Best for auditory learners

Perhaps the best-known language learning service, Rosetta Stone has come a long way since it started in the ’90s. My parents still have a box set of discs for learning Spanish somewhere in their house. It’s a lot easier now with the Rosetta Stone app, but you still need at least 30 minutes to complete a Core Lesson. 

I tried Rosetta Stone’s first Irish lesson, which was primarily auditory with images, though there are ways to customize the app to your learning preferences. The lesson started out fairly challenging, especially since I was completely new to the Irish language. But it did get easier as I went along. 

The iOS app got an update last year that brought augmented reality into the mix. This enables Seek and Speak, which is a scavenger-hunt-style challenge. Point the phone camera at an object and get a translation in the language you’re learning. 

Rosetta Stone has a variety of subscription options, depending on the language — for instance, Spanish is $36 for three months, $96 for a year or $179 for lifetime unlimited access to all of its languages.

It doesn’t matter if you have an iPad, iPad Pro or iPad Air, there’s no denying the excitement that accompanies using a new iPad, or even exploring what’s new in a big software update on your old one. Once you get all your settings in order, there are many cool features you’ll want to explore on your iPad. 

A good spot to start is the Tips collection. You should be able to find the Tips information hub in your default widget setup, but otherwise, you can also find it in your apps library under Information and Reading.

There’s a lot to see and do, but here are our favorite fun features on the iPad to get you started. 

Arrange your home screen widgets

When you finally reach your iPad home screen, you’ll notice the widget layout. By default, your iPad will include the clock, notes, calendar, weather and news. You can edit this layout to best fit your needs. Even if you’re happy with the default apps in place, long-press the app to see extra customization options, or hold and drag to rearrange the widgets. 

If you want to edit the widgets, swipe right on the screen and tap Edit. From here you can remove or add widgets, giving you quicker access to the e-book you’re reading or your favorite games or streaming service.

A new iOS device includes a free trial for Apple TV Plus and Apple Arcade — a CNET Editors’ Choice award pick. So, in addition to downloading your favorite TV streaming apps, games and linking accounts, you can try something new. 

Apple Arcade is Apple’s $5-a-month mobile gaming service. It includes hundreds of games you can play offline and more are added every week. With a new iOS device, you can try out Apple Arcade with a three-month free trial, as well as a one-month free trial for new subscribers. Apple TV Plus is Apple’s subscription video service that includes original TV shows and movies like Ted Lasso, Schmigadoon and The Morning Show.

Join the dark side

Apple will ask if you want to have your device in light or dark mode during initial setup, but you can always make changes in the Settings app. Tap Display & Brightness to swap between modes, set custom schedules (like your screen dimming at sunset), and use True Tone, the feature that automatically adjusts your screen’s brightness based on current ambient lighting.

Split screen

I love using a split screen to keep a reference image nearby when I’m working on a drawing in the Procreate digital illustration app — another CNET Editors’ Choice award pick. But you can use split screen with just about any combination of apps. A common use might be opening your calendar app while writing out a to-do list in the reminders app. To start a split view, open an app, tap the small horizontal trio of dots at the top of your screen and choose the layout you want. 

Scribble for Apple Pencil

If you use an Apple Pencil with your iPad, the Scribble feature, introduced in iOS 14, lets you do more without having to put your pencil down. The feature converts your handwriting, letting you write in text fields that you’d previously type in. It’s a great way to quickly jot down notes or put a personalized touch on things. For example, if you’re sketching in Procreate and need a reference image, you can open Google, jot what you’re searching for (just as you’d type it) and get the result — all without putting down your Apple Pencil.

Save time with Touch ID

If your iPad has a fingerprint sensor, it’s possible to enable Touch ID during your initial device setup. It’s not a requirement, but it can make signing in, as well as confirming purchases and downloads a bit quicker. If you want Touch ID on your iPad, open the Settings app and choose Touch ID & Passcode. The device passcode is one of the first things you’re prompted to set up after turning on your iPad, but you can change or turn off the passcode here as well.

To set up Touch ID, tap Add a Fingerprint and follow the prompts. Afterward, you can customize what your Touch ID can be used for, like unlocking your device and password autofill.

Use Sign in with Apple 

Sign in with Apple is a feature to be aware of and use, rather than a setting to adjust on your device. The tool is another layer of defense for your security, like adjusting your device’s privacy settings or using privacy tools like a virtual private network or DuckDuckGo. 

When you create a new account for an app or website, you can choose Sign in with Apple instead of signing in with Facebook, Google or email. The tool creates a random email address that can only be used for one specific app. The app or website will use the generated email, but Apple will forward any correspondence to your real email, protecting your identity. You can reply to whichever emails you like without exposing your personal email address. 

There’s also the Hide My Email option. Apple creates a random email address for you to use when signing up for any service — you’ll recognize it by the unique alphanumeric string followed by @privaterelay.appleid.com. 

Speech to text

If your ideas are flowing faster than you can type them out, the iPad has a dictation feature that works across email, text messages and notes. For example, you can open the Notes app and tap the microphone icon on the keyboard. Apple will ask if you want to enable dictation; tap yes. Now when you tap the microphone when it’s available on the keyboard, you can use speech to text. If you use speech to text in third-party apps, you may have to grant additional permissions. 

To turn off speech to text, open the Settings app and tap Keyboards. Scroll down and toggle off Enable Dictation.

Learn more about your photos

The iPad photos app has a handy tool that works a bit like Google Lens. Open the photos app, choose an image and tap the little “i” in the upper-right corner. A panel will open and you can see details like camera spec information, as well as when the photo was taken. You can also add a caption and the location of the image. 

You can also learn more about what’s in your photo. Tap the Look Up option in the info panel and your iPad will offer information from Siri, the web and maps (if applicable).

Laptops have dozens of handy keyboard shortcuts to make your task easier. You can force apps to close, take screenshots and — perhaps our favorite shortcut — reopen the browser tab you didn’t mean to close. 

Remembering to lock your laptop if you step away is probably one of the most important things to remember — whether you’re back in the office or working remotely. An unlocked laptop is vulnerable. Even if you’re away for just a few minutes, someone could read your messages, send an email from your account, mess with your files or steal confidential data. 

Here are the keyboard shortcuts that’ll keep your laptop secure: 

Lock your MacBook screen by pressing Control+Command+Q. This keyboard shortcut will immediately take you to the laptop’s lock screen and you’ll need to reenter your password to get back in. For an even faster lock, press the Power button once. 

If you’re using Windows, you can still lock your screen when you’re away. Windows users can press Control+Alt+Delete and choose Lock from the list of options. You can also press the Windows key+L to lock your screen. If you’re not a fan of keyboard shortcuts, you can also click the Start Menu icon, click your username and then click Lock.

My father played the guitar when I was growing up and always kept a stack of well-worn songbooks from Harry Chapin, Don McLean and John Prine nearby. When my parents gave me a Takamine acoustic guitar for my birthday as a teenager, I consulted those same songbooks for my first foray into guitar playing. I admittedly fell away from the practice over time, but during the coronavirus lockdown, a lot of people suddenly had the urge to pick up a new skill. Since I was a little rusty, I decided to brush up on my guitar playing, and through that process I have found some of the best online guitar lessons out there. 

What I like most about playing guitar is that the guitar is an instrument that rewards the player — there’s no feeling like writing your first song, getting a riff right, learning a guitar trick, picking up a tune by ear or earning those calluses on the tips of your fingers.
