Load up your silenced PP7s and prime those remote mines: GoldenEye 007 is coming to Nintendo Switch Online, adding online multiplayer for the first time, the company revealed in Tuesday’s Nintendo Direct livestream. The James Bond-themed first-person shooter will join the Switch’s selection of Nintendo 64 classics “soon,” the company said.

It’ll also come to Xbox Game Pass for Xbox One and Xbox Series X and S, and developer Rare noted that this version will include “achievements, 4K resolution and a smoother framerate.” It’s unclear if the Switch version’s visuals will be upgraded (Nintendo’s console doesn’t support 4K; we asked Nintendo, Rare and Microsoft to clarify) or remain closer to the N64 original, but the Switch and Xbox versions will come out on the same day.

In an apparent trade-off, online multiplayer will be exclusive to the Switch version, the official 007 website noted. The Xbox version will also be available for free to people who own a digital copy of Rare Replay, the 30-game compilation of classics that came out in 2015.

GoldenEye 007 hit the N64 in 1997, as a licensed tie-in to the 1995 movie that introduced actor Pierce Brosnan as the legendary British agent. The game won critical acclaim for its fun single-player campaign and epic split-screen competitive multiplayer and became the N64’s third bestselling title, with 8.09 million units sold. It was only topped by Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64, which sold 11.91 million and 9.87 million copies, respectively.

Rare also developed GoldenEye followup Perfect Dark for N64 in 2000, before Microsoft acquired the company in 2002.

Fans have been expecting a remaster for Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and S to be revealed for months, since achievements for this remaster have leaked multiple times. It was reportedly planned for release on Xbox 360 in the late 2010s, and an apparent extended gameplay video appeared in 2016. At the time, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said the game’s licensing rights complicated efforts to get it on the console. The versions revealed on Tuesday don’t appear to be the remasters; the Switch release seems to visually identical to the N64 one, while the Xbox release looks like an upscaled edition of the original.

“Great to see that GE007 is being made available again. I hope this means that a new generation will get to experience and enjoy the game,” David Doak, a developer whose face was famously used for in-game Bond ally Dr. Doak, tweeted after the announcement. “It was an absolute privilege to be part of the talented team that created it 25 years ago.”

He also tweeted a recent shot of him dressed like his in-game counterpart, and joked that players shouldn’t “come crying” to him if they have trouble unlocking the infamous Invincibility cheat. That’s one of the game’s most difficult challenges — you have to beat Facility in under 2 minutes and 5 seconds to get it.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Bond movie franchise — with latest film No Time to Die now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video — but the series is in a state of flux as fans await the announcement of Daniel Craig’s successor in the role. Hitman developer IO Interactive is also working on its own Bond game.

Nintendo is also adding Pilotwings 64, Mario Party 1,2 and 3, Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2, 1080 Snowboarding and Excitebike 64 to the Nintendo Switch Online N64 library this year and next, it said Tuesday.

Internet infrastructure company Cloudflare suffered an outage late Monday and early Tuesday, disrupting services for a wide range of sites that included Discord, DoorDash, Fitbit, NordVPN and Peloton, according to Downdetector.

Cryptocurrency exchanges such as OKX and FTX were temporarily inaccessible, too.

Reports of Cloudflare problems started around 11:30 p.m. PT Monday, and the company reported that it had resolved the issue a little after 1 a.m. PT Tuesday.

In an emailed statement to CNET, the company noted that the outage wasn’t the result of an attack. 

“A network change in some of our data centers caused a portion of our network to be unavailable,” a company spokesperson said. “Due to the nature of the incident, customers may have had difficulty reaching websites and services that rely on Cloudflare.”

You don’t have to watch Obi-Wan Kenobi or any of the other Star Wars movies and shows on just any old television — LG is releasing a special edition of its 65-inch C2 OLED TV that’s tailor-made for them. The Galactic Empire-styled TV was revealed on the show floor of the Star Wars Celebration Anaheim last month, and isavailable exclusively from LG’s site from Tuesday.

It’ll set you back $2,999, making it pricier than standard model (which can be found for around $2,100).

This edition of the C2 features a Star Wars-inspired on-screen menu system, aesthetics and packaging that features Darth Vader. It also comes loaded with exclusive galleries of Star Wars content — from original, illustrated storyboards to posters of iconic scenes.

The Star Wars C2 will include a themed Magic Remote, and its user interface will mimic the look of a lightsaber. You’ll also hear the Sith Lord’s terrifying breathing when you turn the TV on.

There will be only 501 units released in the US — a reference to the real-world cosplay group and Vader’s elite stormtrooper unit in-universe — and each TV will include a numbered certificate of authenticity. Given Star Wars fans’ traditional passion for collectibles and limited-edition items, you can expect it to sell out almost immediately. It’s unclear when it’ll ship, but we’ve reached out to LG for comment.

“The C2 offers image quality that’s a clear step above any non-OLED TV I’ve seen, a bigger range of sizes than ever — including a new 42-inch option — and a price that’s not too steep,” CNET’s David Katzmaier said of the standard, non-Star Wars model.

Microsoft ended support for Internet Explorer on Wednesday, putting its aging web browser out to pasture after nearly 27 years. A South Korean software engineer marked the moment by spending 430,000 won ($330) on a headstone emblazoned with Internet Explorer’s stylized “e” logo and a cheeky engraving, Reuters reported.

“He was a good tool to download other browsers,” it reads, referring to the joke that people only used the dated Internet Explorer to install more modern ones like Google Chrome.

The end of support came more than a year after the company said that its Internet Explorer 11 Windows 10 desktop app would be retired in favor of Microsoft Edge.

“Not only is Microsoft Edge a faster, more secure and more modern browsing experience than Internet Explorer, but it is also able to address a key concern: compatibility for older, legacy websites and applications,” Microsoft said of its newer browser, which launched in 2015, in a blog post.

The first version of Internet Explorer was included in a Windows 95 Plus upgrade pack in 1995. 

It was once the most popular web browser, reportedly having 95% of the market in 2003. Usage dropped as rivals like Chrome rose and Microsoft made the Chromium-powered Edge its default browse. StatCounter indicated it’s recently held around 0.5% of the market.

The move away from Internet Explorer resulted in technical problems in Japan, where some businesses and government agencies operated websites only compatible with the the old browser, according to Nikkei. They were apparently aware of the shift to Edge, but procrastinated in taking action and many seeking help from software developer Computer Engineering & Consulting.

The updated 13-inch MacBook Pro that Apple revealed at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference last week will be available to order Friday, the company said Tuesday. The new version adds the more robust new M2 chips, supports up to 24GB of unified memory and promises up to 20 hours of battery life. 

It starts at $1,299 (£1,349, AU$1,999). You’ll be able to order from apple.com, the Apple Store app, and through Apple authorized resellers starting at 5 a.m. PT Friday. The laptops will start arriving to customers worldwide on June 24.

Also getting the M2 upgrade is Apple’s upgraded MacBook Air, which starts at $1,199 (£1,249 in the UK and AU$1,899 in Australia) and will be available in July. It’ll have a slightly larger display than the Pro, but a little less battery life.

Apple unveiled iOS 16 during Monday’s WWDC 2022 keynote, and it includes a completely redesigned and customizable lock screen for your iPhone. One feature that wasn’t present was the rumored always-on display, but 9to5Mac reported on Tuesday that the updated operating system’s code suggests it’ll be added in future, possibly on the iPhone 14 later this year.

An always-on display would let you see information like the time, notifications and missed calls even when your iPhone screen is off. This feature has long been available on Android phones, as well as the Apple Watch Series 5 and later, so its absence on the iPhone is conspicuous.

Diving into iOS 16’s first developer beta, 9to5Mac apparently found multiple frameworks linked to backlight management that hint at an always-on display. This mode may be exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models, Bloomberg reported last month.

WWDC 2022, Apple’s annual developer conference, runs June 6-10.

Apple didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Elon Musk on Monday accused Twitter of “actively resisting and thwarting” his right to information about the number of bots on the microblogging site. In mid-May, the Tesla CEO hit the brakes on his $44 billion deal to buy Twitter until the company backs up its estimate of fake and spam accounts.

Musk has criticized Twitter’s moderation policies, particularly its inability to get a handle on the number of bots. He wanted his own team to do a random sampling to calculate the number of fake accounts, according to CNBC, but Twitter said nonpublic information would be needed for an accurate count.

Twitter said earlier that false or spam accounts represented fewer than 5% of its monetizable daily active users during the first quarter of 2022.

A letter Monday, from attorney Mike Ringler to Twitter’s legal department, noted that the company’s offer of extra details about its own testing methodologies wouldn’t suffice.

“This is a clear material breach of Twitter’s obligations under the merger agreement and Mr. Musk reserves all rights resulting therefrom, including his right not to consummate the transaction and his right to terminate the merger agreement,” Ringler said in the letter.

Experts have said Musk faces a $1 billion breakup fee if he walks away from the deal, with Boston College law professor Brian Quinn telling the Associated Press the Tesla boss is looking for a way out or an excuse to renegotiate the price. Quinn reckons Musk’s reasoning is unlikely to hold up in court since he already waived his ability to ask for more due diligence.

In an email to CNET, Twitter said it will “cooperatively share information” with Musk to complete the transaction in accordance with the terms of the merger agreement.

“We believe this agreement is in the best interest of all shareholders,” company spokesperson Brenden Lee said. “We intend to close the transaction and enforce the merger agreement at the agreed price and terms.”

Around 70% of Musk’s nearly 97 million Twitter followers could be spam, fake or inactive, according to a May estimate from audience research software maker SparkToro.

Asus on Tuesday unveiled the ROG Swift 500Hz, the world’s first 500Hz Nvidia G-Sync display. The 24-inch gaming monitor‘s ultrafast refresh rate is designed with competitive gaming at 1080p in mind.

It didn’t reveal the price or release date for ROG Swift 500Hz.

“The ROG Swift 500Hz draws frames more than eight times faster than typical 60Hz displays in a single second, which means you have that much more time to get a leg up on your opponent in esports titles like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Valorant, Overwatch, and Rainbow Six Siege,” the company said in a release.

Included in the monitor are Nvidia’s Reflex Analyzer to track latency and G-Sync to maintain clarity. It pushes refresh rates using TN (twisted nematic) panel the company has dubbed “E-TN” (esports TN), which prioritizes speed over color.

It’s quite a jump from the 360Hz game display Asus and Nvidia debuted at CES 2020. We saw a prototype 500Hz panel earlier this year, from BOE.

Pokemon trainers who aren’t concerned about fitting their Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 charging case in their pocket will undoubtedly be excited to slip their buds into Samsung’s new Poke Ball-themed charger. It’d go nicely with the Pokemon-styled Galaxy Z Flip 3 phone that the company revealed in April.

Unfortunately for Pokemon fans in the rest of the world, the limited edition charging case holder is, like the Pokemon phone, exclusive to South Korea, says Gizmodo. It’s bundled with the buds for 134,000 won (roughly $105), and comes with a selection of Pokemon stickers — 5% of the packages will include the ultra-rare Mew — for further customization.

“The Galaxy Buds 2’s standout feature is really their design,” CNET’s David Carnoy said in his 2021 review. “Not only are these earbuds smaller and lighter than the Buds Plus and the line-topping Buds Pro, but they nestle in your ears nicely and are relatively discreet.”

Razor released a similar wireless charging case with Pikachu-branded earbuds in 2020, Gizmodo noted.

Samsung didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment about a wider release for the Poke Ball holder.
