Every year a new iPhone comes out — with the iPhone 14 lineup expected to be unveiled today during Apple’s September media event — and it can be extremely tempting to upgrade each time a new model hits the market. That’s why subsidizing your new iPhone by selling your current or older one is such a great idea. Saving as much money as possible is paramount if you want to stay on the cutting edge of tech. On that point, there are numerous ways to trade in an old iPhone and earn hundreds toward your new one.

Fret not. We’re here to help. We’ve put together a list of the best places to sell so you can get a good price for your old iPhone. Below, you’ll find three different ways you can make some cash, as well as when to make the sale and what you can expect from the process.

Sell your old iPhone to help cover the costs of your new iPhone.

1. Sell it to a buy-back service

Looking for a quick and easy option? Consider selling your old device to a buy-back service. Although it’s not entirely without risk — if the old iPhone isn’t in the condition you said it was, for example if it is a broken iPhone, you may not get the full value quoted by the buyer — it does minimize the time and hassle, especially compared with trying to sell it yourself on, say, eBay or Craigslist.

There are traditional trade-in options like those offered by Apple and Best Buy (see the next section), and then there are buy-and-sell marketplaces like those listed below. Before you spend a lot of time hopping from one to another to get quotes, head to Flipsy, which compares US trade-in values at multiple buy-back stores. It shows you the payment methods, price-lock duration (that’s how long you have before you need to send the phone in) and price based on the condition of the old device. (Because each buyback program and store is little different when it comes to “condition” definitions, Flipsy doesn’t drill down beyond phone model, carrier and storage.) SellCell is another price-comparison service for anyone looking to score top dollar for an old iPhone.

Screenshot of a Flipsy page listing iPhone X models for resaleScreenshot of a Flipsy page listing iPhone X models for resale

Flipsy makes it easy to compare buy-back rates and resale value from various services. Here, for example, you can see what an unlocked iPhone X would’ve gotten you in May 2020.

Screenshot by Rick Broida/CNET

If you’d rather check out some individual marketplaces yourself, I’ve singled out some I think are worth a look. Based on what criteria? For starters, I looked for a TrustPilot “TrustScore” rating of at least 4.5 stars based on at least 500 user reviews. I also looked for speed and simplicity in obtaining a sample quote. My test subject: an unlocked 64GB Apple iPhone X in “good” condition. Note that the quotes listed here are what I received at the time of this writing; your mileage may vary.

Decluttr

Lightning-fast quotes

Decluttr may have the fastest quote-generator of any buy-back site. You type the brand and model of your phone, choose it from the list that appears and presto: Instant quote. (You may have to click a few times to change the carrier and the phone’s condition.) It’s worth noting that Decluttr’s “good” option is the best condition you can select; it might equate to “mint” or “excellent” elsewhere.

Valid for a limited time only, you can get 10% extra on all tech with a max bonus of $40 by using code CNET10EXTRA

TrustPilot score: 4.5

iPhone 12 quote: $425

BuybackBoss

Super-easy to use

BuybackBoss made it easy to get a quote, with only one head-scratching moment along the way: choosing the condition of the phone. In between “mint” and “fair,” you’d expect to find an option called “good.” But instead, it says “used.” I mean, they’re all used.

TrustPilot score: 4.7

iPhone 12 quote: $421

GadgetGone

Top dollar for your phone

Although GadgetGone may not have the name recognition of, say, Gazelle or Swappa, it has the highest TrustPilot score of the services I investigated for selling an Apple device, and it offered me the most cash for my iPhone model.

TrustPilot score: 4.8

iPhone 12 quote: $431

See at GadgetGone

I’ll give an honorable mention to Swappa, which has a sky-high TrustPilot score (4.9) but isn’t really a buyback service. Rather, it’s a marketplace designed to connect buyers and sellers. Think eBay, but with a focus on devices like your iPad, iPhone or other Apple product. To list your older iPhone (which doesn’t guarantee a sale), you must first create a Swappa account and then connect a PayPal account. You also set your asking price, which necessarily includes a sale fee, but not any additional PayPal fees that may apply.

Worth the extra effort? Perhaps: Swappa recommended a sale price of $426 for my iPhone, while noting that the same phone had recently sold for $345 — still higher than most buy-back services. But a marketplace is almost always going to net you a higher profit (see below).

2. Trade in for credit toward a new one

Want to cut out the middleman, so to speak? You can start by going back to the source. That can be either the manufacturer or a big-box retailer, the largest of which generally offer solid trade-in options for a new device. Consider two of the biggest fish in the pond: Apple and Best Buy.

Apple

Straight-up Apple Store credit

Apple’s iPhone trade-in program offers an easy way to better afford a new iPhone, as phone trades net you Apple Store credit.

For example, here are the current estimated trade-in values for select models, all of them in “good” condition:

  • iPhone 8: Up to $100
  • iPhone X: Up to $170
  • iPhone 11: Up to $300
  • iPhone 12: Up to $420

Those rates are reasonably competitive for an Apple trade-in, but you should definitely shop around. Apple’s trade-in program doesn’t factor in how much storage your phone has, however, so an iPhone X with 64GB will net you the same trade-in value as one with 256GB — which is very different elsewhere.

See at Apple

Best Buy

Trade for a store gift card

Best Buy offers a trade-in program as well; at press time, a 64GB iPhone 12 in good condition would fetch you $290 with Pro variants offering higher values. (Taking an unfortunate cue from Apple, trading a higher capacity model in does not raise the value.) Curiously, the Best Buy trade-in program doesn’t accept unlocked-iPhone trades, only those that come from one of the Big Four carriers. I selected AT&T for my quotes.

As with Apple, your Best Buy phone trade-in results in a Best Buy gift card — fine if you’re a Best Buy fan, or plan to buy your next iPhone there. There will occasionally be additional promotional offers from Best Buy, which can add value to the trade-in.

See at Best Buy

The key takeaway here: Shop around. There are plenty of services with program options that will buy your old iPhone or take it in trade, but you might do better selling it yourself.

3. Sell it yourself

Selling an iPhone yourself will usually net you the most profit, but it’s not without risks and hassles.

Craigslist

Good if you want cash, bad if you’re risk-averse

Craigslist is probably the riskiest option, but buyers will pay cold, hard cash for iOS and Android devices. The biggest challenge here isn’t finding customers — it’s getting them to show up. Be prepared for flakes.

If you do decide to use Craigslist or another in-person option to sell an iOS device, make sure you meet your buyer in a well-lit, public place (many police departments offer their parking lots as transaction sites). For the smoothest transaction, make the agreement clear prior to meeting — your customer should know the price, the condition of the phone and its wireless carrier (especially if the phone isn’t unlocked) in advance.

See at Craigslist

Facebook Marketplace

Also good for cash, and with a bit more seller protection

I consider this a big step up from Craigslist, because not only are your listings free, but Facebook removes much of the anonymity from the transaction of your Apple gadget. You can check the profile of any interested buyer. You can also control where your listing is seen and by whom. I’ve sold lots of items this way, and while I’ve had my share of last-minute no-shows, most of the transactions worked out well.

See at Facebook Marketplace

eBay

Safe for buyers and sellers alike, but be prepared for fees

If you don’t mind putting in a little work — listing, shipping and paying a small sales fee — eBay is arguably a better place to sell a used phone than either Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. That’s because it offers purchase protection, which makes people more comfortable buying from strangers.

The downside? Fees. eBay charges a sales fee for products that are sold through its site: 10% of the final selling price. To figure out a ballpark selling price for your device, search for your model and check the “sold” listings.

If there’s a downside to selling your iPhone on eBay, it’s the potential risk of buyer’s remorse. eBay offers protection to both the seller and buyer, but customer service tends to side with the buyer in the event of a dispute. Scammers know how to take advantage of this. You can minimize your risk by documenting everything (including taking photos or screenshots of the phone’s IMEI number) and making sure to get signed proof of delivery.

See at eBay

When to sell your old iPhone: Right now

Your old phone is losing market value by the day. In fact, it’s estimated that within 24 hours of a new iPhone’s unveiling, your old phone loses up to 30% of its trade-in value.

One concern is that if you sell your old smartphone immediately, you’ll be phoneless until the new one arrives. Thankfully, many of the aforementioned buy-back and trade-in services give you a grace period (also known as a “price lock”) of up 30 days after selling your phone before you have to send it in — time enough, hopefully, to purchase and receive your new phone and get everything migrated over (including the SIM card — don’t forget that!). Since the iPhone 14 is almost here, this is less of an issue currently.

What to know before you sell your old iPhone

Whether you sell by yourself or trade to a third-party company, make sure you prep your iPhone properly before selling it
. Here are some tips:

  • Back it up: Back up all of your important data — including contact, photos, videos and apps — using Apple’s iCloud service or a third-party cloud storage service.
  • Turn off Find My: Apple’s Find My app (formerly known as Find My iPhone) is a security feature that must be turned off before you sell your phone — or nobody else will be able to use or reset it. To turn off Find My, open the Settings app on your iPhone and go to Settings > [Your username] > Find My and turn it off.
  • Wipe it: Sign out of all apps, services and connected accounts (like your iCloud account). Then, open the Settings app and go to General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings to erase everything from your iPhone. Once this is complete, you can also go to General > Reset > Reset All Settings to restore the iPhone to factory settings, just in case.
  • Remove the SIM card: Don’t forget to pop out your SIM card, which you’ll likely need for the new phone to keep your existing number and service.

You’ll receive the most money for your phone if it’s in tip-top shape, but you can still do well if it’s in “good” condition: No cracked screen, no big dents or scratches in the casing, no water damage, and everything working well (meaning the phone turns on, holds a charge and so forth).

If your phone is damaged, you can probably still get something for it, even if the device doesn’t turn on. It’s not worth it to repair a cracked phone screen before you sell, but if your screen is only slightly damaged — a small hairline crack in the corner, for example — you may want to sell it on your own instead of trading it in. An individual may be willing to overlook superficial screen damage for a good price.

What’s happening

The streaming service market is crowded. With multiple subscriptions to pay for and rising prices, it’s becoming expensive to watch TV on cable or as a cord-cutter.

Why it matters

You can pare down your monthly expenses without totally eliminating your streaming service budget.

What’s next

Tap into these tips to save money while streaming the TV shows and films you want.

If you’re feeling the pinch of inflation as prices climb for gas, food and other essentials, you may be looking to make cutbacks in your household budget. Sure, it’ll help if you ditch cable and become a dedicated cord-cutter. But when you subscribe to multiple platforms like Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Disney Plus, Apple TV Plus, YouTube TV and other popular streaming services, it can feel like you’re spending as much as you were for cable alone, if not more.

Fortunately, there are ways to save on streaming, and they don’t require much in the way of sacrifice. Still want to watch all your favorite shows like Stranger Things? Don’t fret. Can’t live without live TV? We’ve got you covered. Read on for some great tips for stretching your streaming budget.

1. Figure out which services you can cancel

Here’s a simple money-saving tip: Drop one of your streaming services. Just identify the one you’re using the least and cut it loose. For example, if you signed up for Apple TV Plus last year but have already exhausted its handful of decent original shows, there’s no point in keeping your subscription. It may save you only $5 monthly, but it’s a start. And remember: You can always resubscribe when there’s a new season of, say, Ted Lasso.

2. Plan your binges

Subscribe strategically to save money.

Ashley Esqueda/CNET

What’s great about Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max and the like is that you can cancel your subscription anytime and resume whenever it suits you — like when a favorite show comes back. Many series go a year or more between seasons, so you can take that time off and pocket the savings. (That’s one reason I don’t recommend subscribing for a year at a time, even if there’s a discount for doing so. You’ll almost certainly save more if you subscribe on a monthly basis.)

For serious savings, work out a rotation schedule. Instead of subscribing to multiple services simultaneously, you could choose just one, catch up on all your favorite shows there, then cancel and move on to another service. For example: Netflix in July, Hulu in August, Disney Plus in September.

Need more help? Here’s how to choose the best streaming service for you. And check out the Binge Buddy app, which helps you track your favorite shows.

A selection of different TV antennasA selection of different TV antennas

TV antennas cost as little as $20 and deliver live TV, no streaming required.

Sarah Tew/CNET

3. Ditch live TV (or use an antenna)

YouTube TV costs a jaw-dropping $65 every month. Hulu Plus Live TV: $70. Even a “budget” service like Sling will set you back $35, minimum. If you’re currently paying for a live-TV streaming service, it’s time to give serious consideration to giving it up.

Think about it: How much live TV do you really watch? There’s precious little sports to see at the moment, and if you’re a news junkie, a free service can fill in the gaps. Plenty of services including Pluto, ABC News Live and CBSN stream live news for free. If nothing else, consider a cheaper alternative like Philo, which offers over 60 channels for a more palatable $25 monthly.

Finally, consider deploying an antenna (remember those?) to pull down local TV stations. You won’t be able to record — not without additional hardware — but at least the airwaves are free. Here are the best indoor TV antennas for 2022 (starting at only $10!).

Check out Philo

Hulu

4. Take advantage of free trials

With the exception of Netflix, nearly every major streaming service offers a free trial, meaning if you plan your viewing wisely, you might be able to binge a series or two without paying a dime. Just make sure to mark your calendar with a cancellation reminder, otherwise you’ll start getting billed after your trial expires.

5. Choose basic, non-premium subscriptions

Nobody likes watching commercials, but if it means saving money, maybe you take one for the wallet. Paramount Plus, for example, costs $10 monthly for ad-free viewing, but just $5 if you’re willing to endure commercial breaks. And opting for Hulu’s ad-supported tier would save you $6 every month. Use that commercial time like we did in the old days: Grab a snack, hit the bathroom, fold your laundry.

While you’re weighing the commercial question, ask yourself if you really need the ultra-deluxe streaming plan — specifically Netflix Premium, which is the only way to get 4K streaming on that service. (It also allows for four simultaneous streams instead of just two.) You’re paying an extra $4.50 monthly above its standard plan for that privilege, and here’s a secret: 4K is utterly pointless if you watch mostly on a phone or tablet. And even on a big TV, standard-plan HD streaming looks amazing.

Not convinced? Here’s how to find out if it’s really worth it to pay extra to nix commercials

6. Share subscriptions with friends and family

Different streaming services have different policies when it comes to password-sharing — but those policies can be vague and difficult to enforce. Just to play devil’s advocate, if I’m paying $20 for a Netflix Premium plan, which allows for five user profiles and streaming on up to four devices, does it really matter if all those users live under my roof?

So maybe I pay for Netflix and Uncle Abe pays for Hulu, and we share our respective accounts. That’s a real-world way to save money, right? Yes, but you should definitely take note of how streaming services are cracking down on password sharing.

7. Look to the freebies

Ever seen The Iron Giant? The utterly delightful first animated feature from Brad Bird is free to stream right now on Tubi. The riveting sci-fi thriller Ex Machina? Free to stream on Kanopy. Love The Rock? Watch the first season of Young Rock on Freevee.

The point is there are lots of free streaming services out there, and many of them are home to some pretty good TV and movies. Yes, you’ll have to sit through commercials on most of them (library-supported Hoopla and Kanopy are the exceptions), but otherwise there’s zero cost. You can even get your fill of free livestreaming news.

Here’s my roundup of the best free movie streaming services and a similar batch of the best free TV streaming services. You should also check out ReelGood’s compendium of movies and TV shows on free services.

8. Get a cord-cutter credit card

Hand holding multiple credit cardsHand holding multiple credit cards

Sarah Tew/CNET

Lots of credit cards give you cash back for various purchases, but a handful offer streaming-specific benefits as well. For example, the American Express Blue Cash card delivers 6% cash back on most streaming services, including Netflix, Disney Plus and Prime Video. If you’re paying, say, $40 monthly for various services, you’d save nearly $37 annually. That’s not enough to recoup the $95 annual fee for the card, but the card’s other cash-back perks might help with that.

Meanwhile, certain Chase cards offer rewards on select streaming providers, and among them are Hulu, Netflix, Sling, and FuboTV. See if your current card has any streaming offers. If not, it might be worth switching to a card that does.

Check out DirecTV Stream

9. Put your money where your phone is

How about a free subscription to Netflix, Hulu or even Amazon? Various phone carriers dangle just such perks. If you’re a T-Mobile subscriber, for example, and have the Magenta Plus plan, you get a Netflix Standard subscription (good for two screens) at no extra charge. AT&T’s Unlimited Elite comes with HBO Max, while Metro by T-Mobile’s Unlimited Plan nets you Amazon Prime (and Prime Video along with it). Verizon will give you Disney Plus with any Unlimited plan.

The biggest streaming bounty comes from Sprint: Hulu and Tidal high-fidelity music streaming are included as part of the Unlimited Plus plan.

In a time when streaming services are upping their prices, it pays to take advantage of all these savings strategies to keep more money in your wallet.

10. Temporarily pause your subscriptions

Not ready to break up with your streaming service just yet? Several providers allow you to temporarily put your subscription on pause, giving your bank account a break. Hulu and Sling will not bill you for up to three months if you pause your account, with the option to select a specific date to reactivate your service. Fubo and YouTube TV are among the other services that allow you to pause your membership for a set length of time, whether it’s a couple of weeks or months.

It is important to note that you will not have access to any of your services during a pause period, and that includes streaming services that may be bundled together such as Hulu and Disney Plus. Check your account page for specific details on how pausing affects your billing cycle and how long you’re able to temporarily stop paying.

The Apple Watch is arguably the single best smartwatch for iPhone owners. For that reason, I’m willing to pay a premium price. But when it comes to accessories, Apple charges way too much for things like bands, wireless earbuds and charging docks. Why pay the full price when you can save by choosing worthwhile competitors?

Thankfully, there are excellent, affordable alternatives. Whether you’re taking a trip and want a portable charger or you’re looking for a more stylish strap, there are options aplenty out there for you and your Apple Watch. Tons of them, in fact — the sheer number of choices can be mind-boggling.

That’s why we decided to cut through the noise and spotlight some of the best ones. If you’re looking for the best Apple Watch accessories, read on. I’ve tried some of these myself; others I’m including based on user reviews or other factors. I’ll update this list periodically.

Inexpensive Apple Watch bands

Thanks to easy-to-swap bands, the Apple Watch can quickly alter both its look and its function. A leather band for work. (Someday.) A sport band for the gym. (Eventually.) A Milanese loop for the theatah. (Sigh.)

Buy any of these at an Apple Store and you’ll pay anywhere from $30 to $150. How absurd is that? Here are some examples of Apple Watch bands you can get for less — in some cases way less.

Winmy

Milanese loop bands: $10 to $15

A Milanese loop is a metal-mesh band with a magnetic closure. It’s one of the easiest bands to put on (and size to your wrist), and it’s also a really dressy option.

Apple charges $149(!) for its version, but there are countless options available on Amazon in the $10 to $15 range. I’ve linked to one of them, but it’s merely representative of what’s out there. Whatever you do, don’t pay Apple $149.

$10 at Amazon

Fullmosa

Leather bands: As low as $14

One bummer about Milanese loops: Over time they can chew up the arm hole of coats and sweaters. So if you want a dressy look without that problem, or you just don’t like the feel of metal on your wrist, look to a leather band.

Like this one: Fullmosa (via Amazon) sells a wide assortment of calf-leather Apple Watch Bands, most of them priced at $14 to $16. You can choose from about a dozen different colors, many with one or two buckle color options as well.

Again, this is just one product of dozens. I chose it because the 6,500-plus user reviews average out to around 4.5 stars.

$14 at Amazon

Youkex

Sport bands: As low as $7

The Apple Watch’s stock sport band is fine, but I always liked the look of the Nike version — the one with all the holes. Turns out you can get one for as little as $7 (maybe even less), in your choice of color combinations. And the options don’t end there; just search Amazon for “Apple Watch silicone band” or “sport band” and you’ll find a generous assortment — many of them priced at $15 or below.

$7 at Amazon

Booyi

Sport-loop bands: As low as $9

If you don’t want a silicone band but do want something that’s both fashionable and good for exercise, consider a sport loop. It’s like a woven-nylon version of the Milanese loop, with hook-and-loop fastening in place of metal and magnets.

Below I’ve linked to one that’s a mere $9, but you may also be able to find multi-packs in the $15-$20 range. Apple’s price for a single: $49 and up.

My colleague Shara Tibken notes that the Velcro doesn’t last as long on these cheaper bands, but even if you have to replace it every, say, six months, you still come out way ahead.

$9 at Amazon

Inexpensive Apple Watch chargers

Traveling with an Apple Watch can be a hassle because you have to recharge it pretty much daily. That means unplugging your charger from whatever nightstand setup is in place, then hoping it doesn’t get lost along the way.

A better bet: Pack a portable charger. Not a portable stand, mind you, one that uses the stock Apple charger, but a rechargeable power bank with its own Apple Watch magnetic charging module.

Granted, this can be something of a hassle as well, as you’ll probably have to recharge the charger after a few uses. But leave it plugged into your laptop or any other USB port, and it’ll be good to go by evening.

As with choosing a power bank for your phone, the higher the battery capacity, the more charges you’ll get. But before settling on a Belkin or Griffin charger from the Apple Store and spending at least $60, check out some of the other options.

Olort

ChiHope Portable Apple Watch Charger: $10

Already traveling with a power bank? Just plug this into one of its USB ports (or any powered port) and, presto, Apple Watch charger. To be clear, this has no power of its own; it’s just a plug-in charging base for the watch. It’s also one of the cheapest and most compact designs I’ve seen. (You can get a charging cable for a few bucks more, but then you’ve got more cord clutter.)

$10 at Amazon

Stoon

Stoon 1,000-mAh Apple Watch Charger

About as compact as portable Apple Watch chargers get, this little Zippo lighter-looking guy packs a 1,000-mAh battery — good for a couple recharges, depending on how low your Watch battery is.

One notable perk: The charger itself plugs directly into a USB port to recharge, so you don’t have to bring along an extra cable, which is what most of these things use.

$43 at Walmart

Here are more Apple Watch chargers available on Amazon.

Inexpensive Apple Watch headphones

One of the Apple Watch’s best tricks (if you have a Series 3 or later, that is) is onboard storage for music and podcasts. To take advantage of that, you’ll need a pair of wireless headphones.

Like maybe AirPods? No question, those are a good match for your Apple Watch. They’re also a $159 match, or $249 for AirPods Pro, so no thank you. (On the plus side, there are AirPods deals that come around on a regular basis, so you might be able to get a lower price.)

I’d definitely start by perusing CNET’s roundup of the best sports headphones, which includes my top pick for runners, the AfterShokz Aeropex. But those are pricey, too, and we’re here to talk (er, listen) cheap. So check out these affordable Bluetooth earphones that can pair perfectly well with your Watch — and our roundup of the best cheap AirPods alternatives. Here’s a top pick:

Sarah Tew/CNET

EarFun Air true wireless earbuds: $34

These seem almost too good to be true, from the pleasant-sounding sweat-proof earbuds themselves to the charging case that supports both USB-C and Qi wireless charging. The EarFun Air has a list price of $60, but they’re frequently on sale for $10 to $15 less. At this writing, for example, there’s a 10%-off coupon available on the Amazon product page.

Read our EarFun Free review.

OK, those are my picks for inexpensive (but still great) Apple Watch accessories. What would you add to this list?

It’s hard enough to reconcile buying Apple AirPods when there are so many less expensive alternatives. But to pay an extra $40 to get them with a wireless charging case? Or to pay another $79 to buy that case separately? No. All the no. Nah to the ah to the no, no, no. (Sorry, was just jamming to Meghan Trainor.)

That said, wireless charging is awesome. My phone does it. My watch does it. I’m spoiled by it and absolutely want it for my AirPods. So do I really have to give Apple even more cash?

wireless-airpods-charging-caseswireless-airpods-charging-cases

Only one of these wireless-charging AirPods cases is made by Apple. The others are all priced $30 or less.

Rick Broida/CNET

I do not. I found three third-party alternatives, all of them priced between $20-$30. I’ve done only basic testing with them, so I can’t speak to their long-term reliability. But if you’ve lost your case and need a replacement or you want to upgrade to sweet, sweet wireless charging, these are decidedly more affordable than anything Apple offers.

Don’t already own a Qi charging pad? There are zillions out there, but don’t pay more than $10. For example, here’s a Letscom Qi charging pad for $9. It will absolutely get the job done.

See it at Amazon

OK, on to the charging cases! If you’ve found one you like better, by all means shout it out in the comments. I’ll update this list periodically.

Blandstrs

Blandstrs AirPods Wireless Charging Case

Though sold by a company called Blandstrs, this product has no branding to speak of. But it does have something not found on any other AirPods case: multiple charge-status LEDs. There are three of them right on the front; they light up red, blue or green depending on how much juice is left in the case. Yes, please!

Other simple but smart design features: a flat bottom that allows the case to stand up and grooved sides that make it less slippery. It’s only a hair taller than Apple’s case, and therefore still perfectly pocket-friendly.

There’s a 450-mAh battery inside, which promises up to five full AirPods recharges, according to the seller. (Apple doesn’t specify the battery size inside the stock case, but a Wikipedia article puts it at just under 400 mAh.) Although it’s the cheapest, this is my favorite of the three third-party AirPods charging cases.

$20 at Amazon

TBGHz

TBGHz A206 Wireless Airpods Charging Case

If you want a case that’s virtually indistinguishable from Apple’s, look no further. Just about the only physical difference here is the pairing button, which is located on the front side instead of the rear. Nevertheless, it also houses a slightly larger 450-mAh battery, good for at least five AirPods charges.

Like Apple’s case, this one is rounded and slippery and incapable of standing upright. Like the Blandstrs case, it arrives in an unbranded box. The only thing distinguishing it as “TBGHz A206” is the seller’s product page. That’s not a deal-breaker by any means, just something to note. To me this is proof positive that Apple’s wireless charging case is grossly overpriced at $80.

$37 at Amazon

NeotrixQI

NeotrixQI A5-W Wireless Charging Case

Here’s a different approach: a case for your existing case. Just slide the latter into the former and you’re good to go. In theory, this should make for a more reliable option, as you don’t have to worry about the individual AirPods not charging correctly; the original case will continue to take care of that. Instead, the only job of the “sleeve” is to supply power to your current case, which it does when you lay it on a Qi charging pad.

The downside, of course, is that it adds bulk: The A5-W is probably 50% larger than Apple’s case. Thankfully, it still fits neatly into a pocket. It’s just not quite as adorable. And, remember, this isn’t a replacement; it has no battery of its own. It’s just a case that adds wireless-charging capabilities to Apple’s case.

It normally sells for $28, but at this writing it’s on sale for $24.77.

This story is part of Gift Guide, our year-round collection of the best gift ideas.

Today’s the last day to get your shopping done before Christmas arrives — but you won’t be the only last-minute shopper. On top of the crowds, you may struggle with empty shelves in stores due to the supply chain crisis making it difficult to find everything on your list, especially in time for Christmas. Fortunately, you still have great options for last-minute gifts.

If you don’t have much time left to buy something for a family member, friend or colleague, here are a few great last-minute holiday gift ideas that you can purchase online and send via email, such as music streaming service subscriptions, gift cards and subscription boxes.

If you missed the shipping deadlines, here are stores offering curbside pickup and 34 last-minute gifts you can get using curbside pickup.

Established Titles

The gift of lordship (or ladyship)

Give someone a piece of Scotland and a title to go with it

What’s cooler than buying someone a star? Buying them an actual square foot of land in Scotland and the accompanying lordship or ladyship that goes with it. Each plot purchased comes with a personalized title certificate (delivered via email within 24 hours) and a unique plot number. This conservation-minded effort also promises a tree planted for every order. Deals start at $42.

This is such a fun, unique gift. Who wouldn’t want to be “officially” designated a lord or lady?

Xtreme Xperience

The gift of race car driving

Get behind the wheel or just ride along in a supercar

Nothing beats the gift of experience, right? If you know someone who’s always craved the thrill of blazing around a racetrack at breakneck speed, you can give them exactly that. Gift vouchers start at $69 for the ride-along option, with driver options starting at $179.

The service sets the recipient up in a select supercar at one of 35 racetracks across the US.

Scribd

The gift of reading

Some call it ‘the Netflix of books’

Why stop at a single book or magazine subscription when you can gift someone a virtually unlimited supply?

Scribd, for example, costs $10 a month, a price that includes unlimited access to Scribd’s library of ebooks, audiobooks, magazines and other media. You can give a six-month gift subscription for $50 or a year for $100.

The gift of listening

All the music of the world, anywhere, anytime

Unlimited on-demand music is one of the true technological joys of the 21st century. So give someone the gift of Amazon Music Unlimited, Apple Music, Google Play Music, Spotify or another subscription service. And what a gift that is: All the music of the world (more or less) at their fingertips, with options for offline listening, playlist sharing and more.

Not sure which one to choose? Check out CNET’s roundup of the best music-streaming services. Know for sure you want to give Spotify (which, if you’re curious, would be my pick)? Here’s how to give Spotify as a gift.

Netflix

The gift of watching (TV shows and movies), Part 1

Give Netflix, chill out

I’ve been a Netflix subscriber for as long as I can remember, so I’m always shocked to find that some folks don’t have the service. How else, then, can they watch Squid Game, The Crown, You, BoJack Horseman, Black Mirror and countless other TV gems that can be found only there?

Yeah — you need to help these people out. Here’s how to gift Netflix for the holidays, including the all-important e-gift option.

Oh, they already have Netflix? Then how about Hulu? The Limited Commercials plan costs just $7 per month, so a mere $25 gift card would be good for about three months. Don’t want to purchase one through PayPal? You can find actual Hulu gift cards in just about every drug store and supermarket.

The gift of watching, Part 2

Disney Plus edition

Disney Plus gives you access to the DEU — Disney entertainment universe — including Marvel, National Geographic, Pixar, The Simpsons and Star Wars. That also includes new shows like The Mandalorian, WandaVision and Loki, as well as old-school classics such as Doug and DuckTales.

The service supports four simultaneous streams and seven discrete user profiles, making it a great gift for families. Just keep in mind that some Verizon and Fios users will already be getting a free year to start.

You can buy Disney Plus for yourself or give Disney Plus as a gift.

StubHub

The gift of a performance

Treat them to a show

There’s nothing better than seeing a live performance, especially after you’ve been hunkering down during the winter months. Give them something to look forward to when the ice thaws with last-minute concert tickets from StubHub. Catch performances from Coldplay, Billie Eilish, Andrea Bocelli, Twice, Red Hot Chili Peppers and more.

If live music isn’t their style, you can give them the gift of laughter with performances from comedic legends such as Trevor Noah, Jim Gaffigan and others. StubHub also carries tickets to Broadway-style musicals and local ballet performances if you’re looking to spend a classy night out.

Be sure to check the CNET’s coupon page for money-saving codes from StubHub before you complete checkout.

Amazon

The gift of Amazon Prime

It literally keeps on giving

Speaking personally, I can think of few better internet-based gifts than a subscription to Amazon Prime. I mean, talk about the gift that keeps on giving: For an entire year, the recipient gets to experience the joy that is free one- or two-day shipping on most of what Amazon sells.

But that’s just for starters. They also get a considerable roster of additional benefits, including things like streaming movies and TV shows, unlimited photo storage and freely accessible libraries of music and ebooks. That’s a lot of stuff for your $119. (Too steep? There’s also a three-month option priced at $39.)

CrateJoy

The gift that comes every month

In a box. With stuff in it

Don’t forget the ever-popular option of a subscription box! Cratejoy’s Geek & Gaming section can help you pick the perfect monthly delivery for your favorite tech-minded friend or family member and has boxes for lots of other categories as well.

Obviously the first box won’t arrive in time, but you can print a here’s-what’s-coming certificate and give them something to look forward to.

The gift of gift cards

Who doesn’t love them?

Sure, you can run into your nearest any-retail-store-on-the-planet to grab a gift card, but that works only if you’re about to see your recipient in person. If you need a gift card delivered, head to eGifter, which offers a huge selection of “cards” that arrive instantly via email. You can even include an online greeting card, invite others to chip in and add a photo or video for a more personalized touch.

And there you have it! Awesome gift options you can print and wrap (or email) in seconds. If you know of any other great last-minute gifts, share ’em in the comments. In the meantime, happy holidays to you and yours from me and mine.

Until the slightly better WH-1000XM4 came along, the WH-1000XM3 were CNET’s top noise-canceling headphones — and that was when we evaluated them at their debut price of $350.

Everything you need to know can be found in David Carnoy’s Sony WH-1000XM3 review, which concludes thusly: “With its comfortable fit and superb performance, the Sony WH-1000XM3 is the noise-canceling headphone to beat.” (Again, that predates the newer model, but you get the idea.)

Cheeps, this is my last daily-deal post for CNET. Gasp! I know, it’s a shocker. But after nearly 14 years and over 9,500 (!) posts like this one, I’m ready for a new adventure. It’s hard to say goodbye, mostly because of you, the best damn audience on this here internet. I can’t thank you enough for all the kind words and support over the years. I’m forever grateful.

Although I’m departing, “The Cheapskate” will live on. CNET’s laser-focused team will continue to seek out the very best deals and deliver them to you on the web and via the email newsletter, social media and text alerts. More deals are on the way starting tomorrow — if not sooner.

For now, one last batch from me. And for the last time: These are available for a limited time and while supplies last. 😉

Samsung

Samsung HW-Q67CT 7.1-channel home theater speaker system

$200 (save $200)

How could I leave you without one last plea to upgrade your TV speakers? Any soundbar will help, but this setup looks pretty primo: Big wireless subwoofer, wireless rear speakers and Bluetooth support for wireless audio from your TV (assuming it’s compatible).

CNET hasn’t reviewed this particular model (which sells new for $400), and there are some mixed reviews to be found elsewhere. Seems like you may need a firmware upgrade to get things working properly. With that, though: big audio dynamite.

Also, note that although this is a certified-refurbished offering, it’s backed by a two-year Allstate warranty and offered by a seller with overwhelmingly positive ratings.

Tronsmart

Tronsmart T6 Plus 40-watt Bluetooth speaker

Price: $48 with promo code 394G59XB

And how could I leave you without one final Bluetooth speaker? (Longtime readers will remember that, for a time, it seemed like speaker deals were a weekly thing. Sometimes twice-weekly! It became a running joke.)

This one is far from the best deal I’ve seen, but it’s definitely more powerful — and versatile — than the average $20-ish speaker. In addition to an impressive 40 watts of audio power, it offers 360-degree sound, IPX6 water-resistance and up to 15 hours of playtime.

You can also use the speaker as a mobile charger; it has a standard Type-A USB port for connecting a phone or whatever. And you can pair two of these speakers for true stereo sound.

Not at all bad for $48 — the lowest price on record, by the way.

Even in these days of wireless phone charging, I find myself short on cables. It’s hard to beat this three-pack, in part because they’re extra-long and in part because each end has a 90-degree connector. Yes! Thank you. All cables should steal this design.

They’re also nylon-braided to avoid tangling, MFi-certified and backed by a 24-month warranty. Seven bucks!

As I’ve mentioned a few times recently, I’ve been tinkering with some 3D printers — in part for fun, in part for a specific need I won’t bore you with. On the fun side, I’ve printed dinosaurs, dragons, fully articulated slugs (TikTok made me do it), puzzle boxes and more — and I continue to be amazed by what these machines can do.

If you’re interested in finding out for yourself, start here: For a limited time, Woot has the SainSmart x Creality Ender-3 3D printer for $140, with free shipping for Amazon Prime subscribers. (Amazon owns Woot.) That’s just about the lowest price I’ve seen on this model; not long ago it was in the $160-$170 range.

See it at Woot

So a quick bit of clarification: Creality is the manufacturer; SainSmart licenses that brand under its own umbrella. I’m not sure if there are any functional differences between SainSmart’s version and the one you’d get from Creality proper, but they look the same in photos and on paper.

Here’s what you need to know: This is about as basic as 3D printers come. It requires assembly, and you’d be well-served by watching a couple YouTube videos before getting started (and along the way). There are models that come mostly assembled, so you can get down to business much faster, but they cost about twice as much.

Next thing: There’s a lot to learn. Again, YouTube videos can help you get started, but don’t expect much help in the form of printed instructions. When your first print won’t stick to the bed or starts coming out a stringy mess, it’s easy to get frustrated.

So be prepared for all that and you’ll be in good shape. As for the Ender-3 itself, it’s a solid, capable machine. If you think you might want something a little more versatile, the Ender-3 Pro is on sale for $190. Among other benefits, it has a flexible, magnetic print surface that makes it much easier to remove your prints.

This story is part of Amazon Prime Day, CNET’s guide to everything you need to know and how to find the best deals.

Amazon Prime Day is full of deals on new hardware like Roku and Fire TV streamers or Echo speakers and smart displays. But Prime Day always brings good deals on movies and books as well — including subscriptions to Prime Video channels like AMC, Starz and Showtime for less than a dollar.

Through June 21 and June 22, Amazon Prime subscribers can take advantage of various early Prime Day video discounts to rent or buy movies and TV shows, including Oscar winners Nomadland, Promising Young Woman and Minari.

When you have Amazon Prime Video, you can add on extra channels or streaming services for a small extra fee and then access them through Prime Video rather than having lots of different apps. Right now, over a dozen streaming services — including AMC Plus, BET Plus, Starz, Showtime, Discovery Plus, PBS and Paramount Plus, home of the newest Star Trek shows
— offer subscriptions for just 99 cents a month for the first two months.

After that, you’ll be billed at each channel’s regular price unless you cancel, which you can do easily; there’s no contract or anything else forcing you to continue subscribing. Pro tip: make a calendar reminder with a notification reminding yourself to cancel if that’s your intention.

Other Prime Day video deals include $2 movie rentals and discounted movie purchases.

So whether you’re looking to binge some series on the cheap or just round out your movie library, take a look at Amazon’s offerings. All these deals should remain in effect through Prime Day.

This story is part of Amazon Prime Day, CNET’s guide to everything you need to know and how to find the best deals.

So many Prime Day deals, so little time. (Literally: the sale ends tomorrow.) Here’s a good one: For a limited time, and while supplies last, the Amazfit Bip U Pro smartwatch drops to $56 at checkout. Regular price: $70 (already a bargain). It’s available in your choice of black, green or pink.

See it at Amazon

The Bip U Pro is an upgraded version of the Bip U; both hit the market late last year. There’s little point in buying the latter when the Pro is just $10 more (sale prices notwithstanding) and adds one crucial feature: built-in GPS. It also adds built-in Alexa, which isn’t nearly as crucial but can be nice to have.

Like the majority of Amazfit watches, this one packs in a wealth of features — some implemented better than others, but overall a solid roster. It sports a razor-sharp 1.43-inch color screen, heart-rate and blood-oxygen monitors, over 60 sport modes, women’s health tracking and a battery that’s good for up to nine days.

What you don’t get here is an always-on option. If that’s important to you, consider the Amazfit Bip S, which is currently also sale for $55 at Amazon (but has been as low as $55) and has a lower-resolution transflective screen. However, it offers only about 10 sport modes and no Alexa.

See the Bip S at Amazon

None of the Bip models let you reply to or dictate text messages, and they don’t automatically detect workouts. The clunky, sometimes confusing companion app — bafflingly named Zepp — remains a thorn in the entire Amazfit lineup, but it’s far from a deal-breaker.

Indeed, based on the couple weeks I spent with the Bip U Pro, it might just be the star of that lineup. The hardware is superb, the fitness features capable, the price borderline unbelievable. (That said, B&H Photo had it for $50 as part of a Father’s Day sale, and that deal is likely to resurface at some point.)

First published earlier this year. Updated to reflect new sale price. Removed expired bonus deal.
