It doesn’t hurt to occasionally clear your Android phone‘s cookies and cache in order to keep your web browser lean, running efficiently and, ideally, storing as few tracking cookies as possible. Whether your Android phone‘s internet browser is Google Chrome, Firefox or Samsung Internet, it collects and stores data every time you surf the web. This information makes up your cookies and cache, and it helps your phone speedily log in to your accounts and load frequently visited sites. 

But this data eventually builds up, taking up space on your phone while also probably including cookies that are tracking your browsing history with the intention of serving personalized advertising. (I’ve been seeing ads for eyeglasses after visiting a few online stores to compare prices and styles, as well as for cruise vacations after eyeing a few possible getaways.)

The steps differ slightly depending on the type of phone and web browser app you’re using, so below we’ll go over how to clear this data for Google Chrome browser (often the default for many Android phones like the Google Pixel line), Samsung’s Internet browser (often the default on the Galaxy phone series) and Mozilla’s Firefox browser. You can also check out our separate guide on how to clear your cache on an iPhone web browser in case you have a few Apple devices to clear out, too.

Google Chrome

You can delete your cookies and cache from within the Android version of Google Chrome by first tapping the More button in the top right corner of the browser, indicated by a column of three dots, then tapping History, then Clear browsing data. You can also access this from the Chrome Settings menu, tapping Privacy and Security and then Clear browsing data.

Chrome also offers Basic and Advanced settings for clearing your Browsing history, Cookies and site data and Cached images and files. You can use the Time range drop-down to select whether you want to delete the entire history or a selection of anywhere from the past 24 hours up to the last four weeks. Tapping Advanced will also give you access to deleting Saved passwords, Autofill form data and Site settings. After selecting what you want to delete, tap the blue Clear data button. You might receive an additional prompt in the event Chrome deems certain websites as being “important” to you, and if so you’ll get the chance to confirm before clearing. Otherwise if you do not receive that prompt, Chrome will immediately proceed to clear as you instructed.

Samsung Internet

There are two different ways you can clear your Samsung Internet browser’s cache and cookie data. You can clear from within the browser itself, or you can go through your phone’s Settings app.

To clear while in the Samsung Internet browser app, first tap the Options button in the bottom right corner represented by three horizontal lines, then Settings; scroll down to and tap Personal Data, then tap Delete browsing data to get a menu of options to delete. You can clear your Browsing history, Cookies and site data, Cached images and files, Passwords and Autofill forms in any combination. After tapping Delete data, you’ll then receive a prompt asking for you to confirm your choices before deleting.

Going through the browser app itself provides the most customization of what you want to delete. However, if you want to access similar options from your phone’s settings menu, open the Settings app and tap on Apps, then scroll down to and tap Samsung Internet and then Storage. 

At the bottom of Storage, you get separate options to Clear cache and Clear data. Tapping Clear cache will immediately delete the cache, but Clear data brings up a prompt that warns you that all of the application’s data will be deleted permanently, including files, settings, accounts and databases. While it doesn’t specify cookies, this “going nuclear” approach should zap all remaining data, letting you restart the Samsung Internet browser as if it were brand-new.

Mozilla Firefox

Much as with Google Chrome, you can clear the cookies and cache from within the Mozilla Firefox Android app. To access this function, tap the More button on the right of the address bar, again symbolized by three vertically aligned dots. Then tap Settings and scroll down to Delete browsing data.

Of the three browsers we’re discussing here, Firefox gives you the most options under the Delete browsing data menu, allowing you to also delete any existing Open tabs, your Browsing history and site data, Site permissions and even your Downloads folder alongside Cookies and Cached images and files. 

While you can’t pick a time range as you can for Chrome, you can be more specific regarding what type of data you would like to remove.

And Firefox has an additional option for those who never want to keep their browsing data after they’re done using the app. Inside of Settings is a Delete browsing data on quit option, which instructs Firefox to wipe any combination of these same settings every time you quit the application. It’s a useful feature if you’d like to keep the browser tidy and, say, avoid accidentally handing off your browser history to someone who may have stolen or otherwise gained access to your phone.

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max phones have received a big overhaul compared to last year’s iPhone 13 Pro. While the Pro and Pro Max still have the same starting prices as last year ($999 for the Pro; $1,099 for the Pro Max), both devices have a redesigned screen that features Apple’s new Dynamic Island. Prices are rising slightly internationally: The Pro starts at £1,099 and AU$1,749, and the Pro Max at £1,199 and AU$1,899.

That Dynamic Island provides context from apps (sports scores, music playback information, etc.) around the 14 Pro’s screen cutout, which replaces the notch seen on the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus and earlier iPhone models. Both iPhone 14 Pro phones are also Apple’s first to include a 48-megapixel main camera, an always-on display and Apple’s new A16 Bionic chip.

However, many of the iPhone 14 Pro features have been available on Android phones for years, such as the always-on display and having main cameras with 50 megapixels and up. While it’s great to see the iPhone 14 Pro phones step up to match those Android features, several rival phones have progressed even farther at the $1,000-plus price point.

Samsung’s $1,200 Galaxy S22 Ultra, for instance, includes a 108-megapixel main camera along with an S Pen stylus. Google and OnePlus, meanwhile, include specs that are quite comparable to the two iPhone Pro models but undercut Apple’s phones on price. Both the Pixel 6 Pro and the OnePlus 10 Pro start at $899. Google’s Pixel 6 also includes exclusive software features like the Magic Eraser for removing people or items from photos. On the other hand, the OnePlus 10 Pro’s highlight is its hardware, with 65W fast charging along with features found on other flagships, such as a high refresh rate of up to 120Hz.

Three of Apple’s new iPhone 14 models — the iPhone 14, 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max — debut today. But which one should you buy? It certainly helps to examine the specs.

Apple unveiled its 2022 iPhone 14 lineup last week, highlighting new cameras, the iPhone 14 Plus (a larger non-Pro model that arrives Oct. 7) and a redesigned notch known as the Dynamic Island for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The lineup will also be the first to omit a physical SIM card slot on its US models, instead opting for an eSIM when activating service with a wireless carrier. Plus, it’s the first iPhone lineup to include satellite communication for emergency calls when cellular service isn’t available.

While several of these new features will be available across the lineup, there are a number of differences (and prices) for each model. We’ve rounded them up in this specs chart, so you can directly compare what’s available.

The new iPhone lineup was just one part of Apple’s latest product reveal, with Apple also debuting three new Apple Watch models with the $249 Apple Watch SE, $399 Apple Watch Series 8 and the $799 Apple Watch Ultra. The AirPods Pro also received a 2022 update, with Apple claiming it will have longer battery life and improved noise canceling for the same $249 price as the original.

Apple’s iPhone 14 maintains the $799 price that the iPhone 13 previously had, while adding new features like car-crash detection, image processing through Apple’s Photonic Engine, satellite connectivity for emergencies and — in the US — the removal of the physical SIM card slot by moving fully to the eSIM. Notably, international models will keep the SIM card slot and have slightly higher prices starting at £849 in the UK and AU$1,399 in Australia.

But Apple’s iPhone 14 faces lots of competition from rival Android phones in the same price range, like Samsung’s Galaxy S22, the Google Pixel 6 and the OnePlus 10T. Those three Android phones even include features that Apple has only just begun to include on its iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max phones, like an always-on display and a 50-megapixel main camera (The 14 Pro phones include a 48-megapixel main camera).

Yet Apple’s iPhone 14 also benefits from iOS 16, which includes the ability to edit and unsend iMessage texts, quick photo edits that let you lift subjects out of photos, customizable lock screens and a revamp to Apple Maps. Meanwhile, the phones from Samsung, Google and OnePlus each offer their own take on Android through software and hardware: Samsung is particularly great at committing to four years of software updates, Google’s Pixel includes the Magic Eraser for removing unwanted people or things from photos, and the OnePlus 10T includes the latest Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip.

In terms of price, the iPhone 14 and Galaxy S22 are roughly the same cost at $799 and $800, respectively, while the Pixel 6 and OnePlus 10T significantly undercut that cost with starting prices of $599 and $649.

Apple’s revival of the “Plus” size iPhone could be the most exciting part of the iPhone 14 lineup. Even though it appears to come with the demise of the Mini size that was part of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 lineup, the $899 (£949, AU$1,579) iPhone 14 Plus announced at Apple’s Sept. event provides a big-screen phone option that is hundreds of dollars less than the $1,099 iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Before the event, when the Plus model was rumored under the moniker of iPhone 14 Max, CNET’s Lisa Eadicicco noted in a commentary that the phone could even make the iPhone 14 Pro Max harder to justify at its higher price. Indeed, both the iPhone 14 Plus and the iPhone 14 Pro Max include many of the same features, along with a similar 6.7-inch screen size: Both include car-crash detection, an improved front-facing camera, satellite connectivity and eSIM support that replaces the physical SIM card on US models.

But if you do plan to splash out for the Pro Max, that phone will include a 48-megapixel main camera, an always-on display, the new A16 Bionic processor and the redesigned cutout on the front-facing screen, which also features the contextual Dynamic Island feature. Those changes give the more-expensive phone a look and functionality that’s noticeably different from the iPhone 14 Plus.

Apple’s new iPhone 14 line debuted last week, and with it came a few more looks at iOS 16 ahead of Monday’s public release. Previously in beta, iOS 16 brings a lot of changes to the iPhone including photo-editing tricks, the ability to edit and unsend iMessage texts, and an Apple Maps makeover among many other new improvements. But despite numerous new features, there are several things that we see on other Apple products and Android phones that don’t appear to be coming to iOS.

I don’t mean to discount the good highlights — in particular the always-on display mentioned when this list first published after WWDC 2022 did arrive for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max — but some of these features that still aren’t coming to the iPhone are pretty easy to find when you look just beyond the devices that Apple makes. 

What We Wanted: Always-on displayWhat We Got: Available on iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will be the first phones made by Apple to include an always-on display, a feature that many Android phones have included over the past decade. An always-on display takes advantage of OLED screens by only lighting up the necessary pixels to show glanceable information like the time and some notifications. Even though Apple has been using OLED screens since 2017’s iPhone X, Apple appears to have waited until the 14 Pro and Pro Max in order to make an always-on display that includes wallpaper art and colors.

What We Wanted: Better texting to non-iPhonesWhat We Got: A group texting improvement 

Apple’s iMessage in iOS 16 is gaining the ability to edit and recall messages that haven’t already been viewed, but these enhancements are still largely iPhone-only features that aren’t advancing the overall state of text messaging within the phone industry. When it comes to texting any other phone that isn’t an iPhone, iOS still falls back to the decades-old SMS standard which lacks conveniences like typing indicators and smoother group texting.

While Google has been getting phone carriers to support the RCS standard that includes these features — admittedly over the course of several years with setbacks — the standard currently remains Android-only with Google claiming that they would be happy to work with Apple for interoperability. 

The chances of that appear as bleak as ever — Apple CEO Tim Cook recently said at a tech conference that the company sees little demand from its users to support RCS — but there is some hope for group chats between the iPhone and Android phones. iOS 16 is adding support for message reactions sent over SMS, which currently arrive as a series of messages about how a person “Liked” or “Loved” a message.

Instead, the Messages app will now translate these into the appropriate icon, much like how it already does this when every participant in the group chat uses an iPhone. Google recently added a similar feature into its Messages app, translating iPhone reactions in the same way. This move isn’t going to massively improve these group chats, but as a convenience I’ll take it.

What We Wanted: Split View on bigger iPhone modelsWhat We Got: Nothing yet

Apple’s iPad tablets have long included the ability to run two apps side by side, taking advantage of the larger screen. The iPad is also getting its own multitasking boost with iPadOS 16, thanks to the new Stage Manager. Android phones have similarly featured the ability to run multiple apps at once. But on the iPhone, even with the iPhone 13 Pro Max and its 6.7-inch display, there is no ability to use two apps at once.

Apple does allow some limited multitasking on iPhone, such as viewing a picture-in-picture video on top of another app, but it’d be great to occasionally view a condensed version of the Mail app alongside Safari or to place the Calculator app alongside a budgeting app.

What We Wanted: More Home Screen, Settings menu customizationWhat We Got: New lock screen options

One of Android 12’s big features is the ability to customize the entire theme of your phone — including custom colors for the notifications pulldown. While iOS 16 is bringing more control to the lock screen, it’d be a great next step to go further and allow thematic tweaks that extend to notifications and the various settings menus.

Alongside a custom theme, it would also be great if home screens would allow for apps to be placed anywhere we want. While widgets can help with this (I use a full-width weather and calendar widget to push my first row of apps lower), some people might want to exclusively place their apps on the bottom row of their home screen. While the existing Focus modes and App Library feature already let you customize which apps you want to appear on home screens, allowing you free rein of placement would be the next logical step for customization.

The lock screen was a big focus during the iOS 16 presentation. Perhaps next year Apple will once again focus on the home screen.

Apple’s new $249 Apple Watch SE made its debut during Apple’s “Far Out” event Wednesday, bringing a new lower-cost Apple Watch to replace the 2020 version. The Apple Watch SE includes the new car-crash detection feature that is also coming to the Apple Watch Series 8, with Apple promising the watch will run 20% faster than the previous SE. The Apple Watch SE goes on preorder Wednesday and will be released next Friday, Sept. 16. In addition to the Series 8, the new Watch SE debuted alongside the rugged $799 Apple Watch Ultra.

Apple Reveals New Apple Watch SE for $249

The $249 starting price for the new SE is lower than the $279 price of the 2020 model, and the cellular version of the Apple Watch SE starts at $299. The watch comes in three aluminum models, in silver, midnight and starlight colors. 

Among the biggest changes coming to the new Apple Watch SE is its new S8 processor, which is the same chip inside the Series 8 and Ultra models. In the brief time that I had with the new Apple Watch SE, scrolling around the app selection screen and other user interface elements felt zippy and smooth. But the bigger benefit is that the SE’s new processor means it will likely support new software features for a long period of time. The previous generation Apple Watch SE, by comparison, runs on the same chip as the Series 5, which is getting a bit old.

Car crash detection is the other major update coming to the SE and Apple’s other new smartwatches. It leverages new gyroscopes and accelerometers inside the watches to detect crashes and notify emergency services and contacts within 10 seconds if the user is unresponsive.

The Apple Watch SE generally looks the same as its predecessor. Without the screen turned on, I was barely able to distinguish it from the Series 7 strapped to my wrist. But if you look closely when flipping the watch over, you’ll notice a subtle change. The finish surrounding the new SE’s sensors has been updated to more closely match the watch’s color. It’s a nice touch, but since it’s on the watch’s underside I’m not sure how noticeable it will be.

The Apple Watch SE is also getting a new low power mode, along with every other Apple Watch from the Series 4 and higher. The new mode dials back certain features, like background heart rate measurements, to extend battery life. Although it doesn’t seem like Apple has extended the SE’s battery life, low power mode should hopefully address some of our criticisms about the Apple Watch’s battery life. 

The new Apple Watch SE will include support for WatchOS 9, supporting the new workout- and sleep-tracking features that are planned for the upcoming operating system update.

The Watch SE appears to be replacing the Apple Watch Series 3 as the most affordable watch in Apple’s lineup, as the Series 3 will not include support for WatchOS 9. The Apple Watch Series 3 remained on the market for five years at $199, so with the Watch SE, Apple appears to be raising the entry-level price for its watch lineup, but with a watch that includes most essential features and can run the most up-to-date software.

The Apple Watch Series 3 has been discontinued from the Apple Store after being on sale for five years. The Series 3’s removal comes as Apple has refreshed its Watch lineup to make its $249 (£259, AU$399) Apple Watch SE the new entry-level model. Apple also debuted the $399 Apple Watch Series 8 and the rugged $799 Apple Watch Ultra at the company’s “Far Out” event alongside Apple announcements like the iPhone 14 series and the new AirPods Pro 2 wireless earbuds.

The removal of the Series 3 isn’t a complete surprise, as the upcoming WatchOS 9 software update will be the first to not arrive on the Apple Watch Series 3. Apple has kept the Series 3 in its lineup at a $199 price, but despite supporting WatchOS 8, the watch’s smaller storage space and slower processor has been showing its age.

Following the Apple Watch portfolio shakeup, Apple now does not have an entry-level model at the $199 price. But by offering the Apple Watch SE at $249, it does lower the price of that model from the $279 that the Apple Watch SE debuted at in 2020.

The Series 3 debuted in 2017 alongside the iPhone X and is the first Apple Watch line to include cellular connectivity without requiring a nearby iPhone.

MoviePass is relaunching in beta on Sept. 5.

Why it matters

MoviePass’ original life as a $10 unlimited subscription led to the creation of several movie subscription services now run by theater chains. The service is now returning with a credit-based system starting at $10.

MoviePass is relaunching as a credit-based movie theater subscription service on Labor Day, with prices starting at $10. The service, which is relaunching under MoviePass co-founder Stacy Spikes, will launch in beta. Waitlist sign-ups will open starting this Thursday at 9 a.m. ET (6 a.m. PT) on the MoviePass website.

The launch details, first reported by Insider and which CNET has confirmed with MoviePass, will see varying prices depending on region. Most subscribers who sign up during the beta period will receive $10, $20 and $30 price tiers that will each correspond to a number of credits that can be used toward the purchase of movie tickets. This will not be an unlimited option, although Spikes has previously said that MoviePass plans to support rollover credits. 

In an email to former MoviePass customers, Spikes said the waitlist will be used to determine which markets the service will launch in, with additional markets to come.

During a February MoviePass event, Spikes also detailed plans to eventually integrate PreShow, his company’s advertising platform that will optionally offer more credits in exchange for watching advertising monitored by facial detection technology.

Aside from the credit system, MoviePass will initially let people buy tickets either directly through the MoviePass mobile app or in tandem with a physical MoviePass card — this time colored in black instead of the previous red. 

Those interested in trying out the beta will have five days to sign up on the MoviePass website before the waitlist closes, and those who are selected will be notified on the Sept. 5 launch date. The waitlist will run on a first-come, first served basis and is free to sign up.

The beta launch announcement is the latest news in the return of MoviePass, following Spikes’ purchase of the brand last November. Spikes first launched MoviePass in 2011 with Hamet Witt. The service went through several initial iterations, including a $50 per month subscription for unlimited movies. When MoviePass was later helmed by Helios CEO Ted Farnsworth and MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe, the service debuted its infamous $10 unlimited plan in 2017 that brought in thousands of customers while burning through the company’s money. Spikes was fired from the service in 2018, and MoviePass itself ended in Sept. 2019.

In returning to MoviePass, Spikes said its new credit model is meant to create a marketplace that is separate from the movie subscription services now run by theater chains like AMC’s A-List, Regal’s Unlimited and Alamo Drafthouse’s Season Pass. In addition to allowing for a system that is more flexible across regions, Spikes said that theaters could also use the system to incentivize customers with discounts and promotions.

“A theater that really wants your business and finds you valuable can treat you differently than a theater that isn’t trying to come after you and get you as a consumer. The flexibility is more the importance here,” Spikes said in a CNET interview last February.

Samsung revealed the new Galaxy Buds 2 Pro wireless earbuds at its August Unpacked event, alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Z Flip 4 and the Galaxy Watch 5 line. They cost $230 (£219, AU$349), and will ship on Aug. 26.

Like the previous Galaxy Buds Pro, Samsung’s pumping up how the wireless earbuds support what it calls 360 audio, which should allow for a surround-sound experience. But to make use of this, the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro need to be connected to a supported Galaxy phone with at least Android 8.0 and Samsung’s One UI 4.1 overlay.

The Galaxy Buds 2 Pro also support 24-bit hi-fi audio, but that feature also requires a Galaxy phone that has Samsung’s One UI 4.0 or above. 

Aside from those Galaxy-only enhancements, the wireless buds do have active noise cancellation and a battery rated for five hours with noise cancellation on — which can stretch to 20 hours using the charging case. Without noise cancellation, the buds can last eight hours, stretching to 30 hours using the case.

The Galaxy Buds 2 Pro have a water resistance level of IPX7 for water and sweat, making them good for the gym or a rainy day, and they come in three colors: Bora purple, white and graphite.

The Galaxy Buds line often has inventive designs (I’m still looking for a sequel to the bean-shaped Galaxy Buds Live), but it’s a bummer that it’s continuing the industry trend of requiring a matching phone for the best sound quality. Google’s new Pixel Buds Pro also require a Pixel phone for its spatial audio, and Apple is fairly notorious for including all kinds of perks for AirPods users when paired with Apple’s devices.
