Across the US and Mexico, Google‘s Doodle has turned into a loving homage to the legendary Dolores del Río on August 3 — the actress’s birthday in 1904.

Dolores del Río was discovered by American filmmaker and legendary director Edwin Carewe, and embarked on an illustrious film career in 1925, appearing in films such as “What Price Glory?,” “Ramona”, “Madame du Barry” and “Journey into Fear,” making the transition from silent film to “talkies.” In the 1940s, she moved home to Mexico, and became one of the most important stars of the Golden Age of Mexican cinema.

Over her storied career, she also advocated strongly for the arts, and became the first woman to sit on the Cannes film festival jury. In 1966, she co-founded the Society for the Protection of the Artistic Treasures of Mexico, and in 1970, she founded the union group Rosa Mexicano, which provided a day nursery for members of the Mexican Actors’ Guild.

Author Salvador Novo said of her: “With Dolores del Río we are in the presence of a case in which extraordinary beauty is only the material form of talent. She has been gifted with grace, and fresh and vibrant nimbleness that, being natural, seems exotic.”

LG‘s next flagship phone, rumoured to be the V30, will mark the company’s first OLED phone since 2015. Announced August 3 in Seoul, South Korea, the phone will come with a 6-inch screen, but unlike the company’s previous OLED phone, the LG G Flex 2, it will not be flexible.

“Expertise in OLED has long been a core competency of LG, and the technology has always been seen as a potential value-add for smartphones,” said Juno Cho, president of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, in a statement. “With competition in the global smartphone space fiercer now than ever, we felt that this was the right time to reintroduce OLED displays in our mobile products.”

The successor to last year’s V20, the screen is bigger, but the size of the bezel has been reduced, making the new phone smaller than the V20. Still, the screen will have amazing resolution, the company said, coming in at 1,440×2,880 (4.15 million total) pixels.

The phone will be officially announced and unveiled at the IFA Berlin trade show at the beginning of September.

Reality TV personality Rob Kardashian of the Kardashian family has had his Instagram account deleted after he allegedly posted intimate photos of his former fiancée, model Blac Chyna, according to a report from Heavy.

Instagram deleted the photos and video of Chyna with another man, after which Kardashian allegedly reposted them along with a tirade claiming Chyna had cheated on him, before the account disappeared, according to Heavy. After the account was deleted, Kardashian took his tirade to Twitter.

Chyna responded on Snapchat, where she claimed that Kardashian had physically abused her. The two apparently split in December of 2016, after the birth of their daughter in November.

Kardashian lives in California, where revenge porn — posting intimate images without the consent of the subject — is illegal.

Samsung Electronics is going all in on the internet of things (IoT). The company announced this week that it is commencing production on the Exynos i T200, a processor optimised for IoT, ZDNet reports.

The chip is a member of its Exynos range of mobile ARM processors, and supports wireless communications and improved security, the company said, boasting a function that prevents illegal copying. It has multiple cores and can support multifunctionality.

Samsung seems to be upping its IoT lineup. Last month, it unveiled Tizen 4.0, a software platform dedicated to IoT, and started implementing it in its Artik IoT platform.

The internet of things is expected to grow exponentially within the next few years, expanding to up to 200 billion devices globally by 2020.

Google Street View has taken us to some pretty interesting places, such as Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, an 800-year-old salt mine in Poland, a volcanic crater in Vanuatu and the Lamborghini Museum. Now, it’s added another world-famous landmark to its collection of places you can visit digitally: The spectacular giant red rock in the heart of Australia, Uluru, formerly known as Ayers Rock.

This is actually a pretty big deal. Although the site is famed as a tourist destination because of its World Heritage Site status, it is sacred to the Traditional Owners of the land, the Pitjantjatjara people of Central Australia, and climbing the rock is considered disrespectful and therefore discouraged. To create the Street View and Story Sphere, Google worked closely with the Aṉangu people, who have lived there for more than 30,000 years, ensuring the traditional laws were respected.

You can visit the site on Street View here and visit the Story Sphere here.

Citing anonymous sources, Recode has reported that AOL and Yahoo are about to make over 1,000 layoffs as they get set to merge under a new media division at Verizon. This, the report notes, is still less than 20 percent of the total workforce.

The two companies are set to be merged under a new media division at Verizon called Oath, and layoffs are expected to deal with positions that are doubled up under the new brand. According to The Street, an AOL spokesperson did not comment on layoffs, but did acknowledge changes. “Consistent with what we have said since the deal was announced, we will be aligning our global organization to the strategy,” the spokesperson said.

Yahoo shareholders are set to vote on a proposal to authorise the sale of Yahoo to Verizon at a special meeting on Thursday.

Neither Yahoo nor AOL immediately responded to a request for comment.

The way you walk could one day be the “fingerprint” that unlocks your phone. A a small wearable protoype developed at the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation’s Data61 lab not only uses the kinetic energy created as you walk to generate power, but it also turns the user’s gait into a unique authentication. The paper can be read online here.

The device monitors the pattern of power generation caused by the gait’s kinetic energy. As the movement creates small dips and troughs in the amount of energy being generated, the device is able to resolve it into a unique signature. The device can also provide backup power for mobile devices using kinetic energy harvesting (KEH).

“By applying both techniques we have developed a way to achieve two goals at once — powering devices and the ability to verify a person’s identity using a wearable device by capturing the energy generated from the way they walk,” said Data61 researcher Sara Khalifa in a statement.

Related articles

The team tested the device on 20 people on a variety of terrains. It was able to authenticate based on gait with 95 percent accuracy and reduced energy consumption by 78 percent compared to accelerometer-based gait authentication, a method that is easier to achieve.

When devices that had been authenticated to a particular gait were tested on “impostors” who attempted to mimic the owner’s movements, they only accepted the wrong user 13 times out of 100 — indicating that refinement is required, but the developers are on the right track.

“It’s more secure than passwords because the way we walk is difficult to mimic,” said Dali Kafaar, group leader of Data61’s Networks Research Group. “Since the KEH-gait keeps authenticating the user continuously, it collects a significant amount of information about our movements, making it difficult to imitate or hack unlike guessing passwords or pin codes.”

The team is also exploring other physical options for authentication, such as breathing patterns and the way users interact with their devices.

Do you read the terms of service for every service you sign up for? Stop lying, you don’t. But you have a very good reason. They’re very long and very boring, and you just want to get stuck into whatever you’re signing up for.

That’s all well and good, but according to Australian consumer rights advocacy group Choice, that lengthy jargon can often conceal strange clauses, and it’s unfair to expect consumers to wade through them. To highlight just how ridiculous it is, Choice hired an actor named Laurence to read aloud all 73,198 words of Amazon‘s Kindle terms and conditions.

Based on the estimation that 500 words is one A4 page, that’s 146 pages, and it took poor Laurence nine hours to slog through the whole thing.

“We want to see an end to companies like Amazon muddying the waters around consumer rights and are asking for legislative change which will prevent businesses from hiding these terms in lengthy, difficult to read contracts,” Choice’s Tom Godfrey said.

The series consists of nine one-hour episodes, which can be found on Choice’s YouTube channel. And don’t forget about website Terms of Service; Didn’t Read, which simplifies and rates terms of service.

Dwarf star Trappist-1 is tiny, just a little bigger than Jupiter, but it’s making huge news. As you’ve probably heard, it’s home to not just three Earth-like exoplanets, but a staggering seven, three of which could have oceans of water, just like Earth. And it’s only 39 light-years away, which means the planets are close enough that we could find out.

Usually Google Doodles are set up in advance to celebrate anniversaries and other occasions. But this time around the web giant pulled out all the stops and did a super quick turnaround to help commemorate this discovery, announced Wednesday, with an animated Doodle.

Telescopes are already turning their attention to the system, homing in on the planets’ atmospheres. As the planets pass in front of the star, the atmospheres are back-lit, which allows spectroscopic analysis of their chemical composition, which in turn will help us Earthlings determine whether there’s liquid water. This may be a bit difficult, as the star is very faint, but with a new generation of telescopes seeing first light in the near future, Trappist-1’s secrets might not be so far away either.

In the meantime, you can play with an interactive model of the system on NASA’s website.

What do you look for in an SD card? If it’s speed, you’re going to love Sony‘s newest offering in the SD space. According to the company, the SF-G Series UHS-II cards will be the fastest in the world, coming in at 300 megabytes per second read speed and 299 MBps write speed.

That 300 MBps isn’t new — the Lexar Professional 2000x was released in late 2015 with the same speed, but a write speed of just 260 MBps. It’s this gap that Sony has closed, thanks to the UHS-II bus that pushed data transfer rates to a theoretical maximum of 312 MBps.

“The quick write speed supports maximum performance of digital imaging devices, contributing to longer continuous shooting of high-resolution images with UHS-II supporting cameras,” the Sony announcement reads. “It also contributes to a shorter buffer clearing time so users never miss a critical moment.”

If it’s high capacity and speed you’re looking for, you might have to wait. The SF-G Series will only be available in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB capacities, launching in spring 2017.
