After Saturday night’s race, four drivers will be cut from the title chase in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs. Sixteen drivers qualified for postseason racing, which consists of eliminations after one more Round of 16 race at Bristol before moving on to three races each for the Round of 12 (Texas, Talladega, Charlotte) and the Round of 8 (Las Vegas, Miami, Martinsville). Four drivers will advance to compete for the title at the Phoenix Raceway on Nov. 6.

The playoffs continue on Saturday night at the Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee, with the Bass Pro Shops Night Race. The race starts Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET (4:30 p.m. PT) and will be broadcast on USA Network. Here’s how you can watch the race without cable.

How to watch NASCAR without cable

The NASCAR playoffs will be broadcast on NBC and USA Network. If you don’t have a cable or satellite TV subscription, you can watch the race with a live TV service. The good news for race fans is that NBC and USA Network are available on each streaming service. The catch is that not every service carries every local network, so check each one using the links below to make sure it carries NBC in your area.

If you live in an area with good reception, you can watch races broadcast on NBC for free on over-the-air broadcast channels just by attaching an affordable (under $30) indoor antenna to nearly any TV.

The new Series 8 and Watch SE models are available for purchase now, with the Apple Watch Ultra to follow next week on Sept. 23.

The Series 8 starts at $399 in the US — the same as the previous Series 7 — while the new Watch SE starts at $249, which is $30 less than the 2020 model. The rugged Watch Ultra checks in at $799. The size and shape of the Series 8 and new Watch SE models remains largely the same as the models they replace, but they boast a couple new health and safety features under the hood, with a temperature sensor and car-crash detection.

Apple unveiled new MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro models based on its new M2 chip at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June. The new MacBook Air is bigger than the previous Air, with the promise of more power. Along with a bigger 13.6-inch display and new M2 chip, however, comes a higher price. Gone is the $999 starting price; the new M2 MacBook Air line starts at $1,199. The updated 13-inch MacBook Pro with the M2 chip starts at the same price of $1,299 as the previous model.

The new M2 machines have received their first discounts. You can save $100 on the M2 MacBook Air and the M2 MacBook Pro at Amazon, including units with the cool new midnight black color.

If you’re sad to see the Air’s $999 starting price disappear (we are; sniff), you can get the previous-generation MacBook Air with the M1 chip and 13.3-inch display for $899 at Amazon — a savings of $100. You can also get the previous 13-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 chip for $1,000 at Best Buy — that’s a substantial $299 discount.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro and its larger 16-inch Pro sibling, both based on Apple’s M1 Pro chip, are the company’s biggest and most powerful MacBooks. They are $400 off at Best Buy right now and selling at the lowest prices we’ve seen yet.

We’ll update this page with any notable MacBook price drops, so be sure to check back.

US pricing for Apple’s MacBooks

The new M2 MacBook Air starts at $1,199, and the previous M1 MacBook Air starts at $999. The 13-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1,299, the 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1,999 and the 16-inch MacBook Pro starts at $2,499.

While Amazon has the best prices at the moment, one benefit to paying full price and buying from Apple is you can customize the machine and add more RAM or a higher-capacity solid-state drive. The models sold by Amazon and other retailers are fixed configurations.

Want to go the refurbished route? You can now find refurbished M1 MacBooks on Apple’s Certified Refurbished Mac page. Refurb inventory changes rapidly so you may not always see an M1 MacBook Air or Pro listed. It’s worth keeping an eye out, however, because you can lock in substantial savings, up to $200. Rick Broida, CNET’s Cheapskate emeritus, is a big fan of refurbs, particularly Apple’s — which are often as good as new.

It’s also worth noting that the Apple Store offers students an educational discount, which can trim hundreds of dollars from the price of a new laptop or tablet.

Keep reading to see the best MacBook laptop deals currently available for Apple’s current and previous-generation MacBooks. We update this list periodically.

M1 MacBook Air (256GB SSD): $899

Save $100 vs. Apple Store

The MacBook Air from 2020 features Apple’s M1 processor, which has an eight-core CPU, a seven-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. The M1 MacBook Air starts at $999 from Apple and features 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. It lacks the Touch Bar (which could be viewed as a positive), and does have a 13.3-inch Retina display, Touch ID and the Magic keyboard. The step-up model costs $1,199 from Apple and doubles the solid-state storage to 512GB.

You can save $100 on the 256GB model in silver at Amazon right now. The new M2 MacBook Air also has a $100 discount at Amazon but still costs $200 more than the M1 model.

M2 MacBook Air (256GB SSD): $1,099

Save $100 vs. Apple Store

In addition to receiving the second-gen Apple Silicon chip, the M2 MacBook Air boasts a larger 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display and is available in two new colors: starlight and midnight. It also ditches the Air’s tapered wedge shape and now looks more like the squared-off, slablike Pro models. The webcam has also been upgraded to a 1080p resolution for better video calls. The M2 Air starts at $1,199, which is $200 more than the previous model. It features an M2 processor with an eight-core CPU and eight-core GPU, 8GB of memory and a 256GB SSD. The step-up $1,499 model has an M2 chip with an eight-core CPU and 10-core GPU, 8GB of memory and a 512GB SSD.

Amazon and B&H are each selling the 256GB model in silver or the new midnight color at a $100 discount, the biggest price break to date. If you need more storage, the best price on the 512GB model is at B&H where you can get it for $1,299. (B&H quotes a savings of $100, but the 512GB model at Apple costs $1,499, so it’s actually a $200 discount.)

It also features 8GB of RAM, a Retina display, the Magic Keyboard and the Touch Bar with Touch ID. You can save $299 on the 256GB model at Best Buy. Need more storage? Aside from the new M2 chip, the updated 13-inch MacBook Pro remains mostly unchanged from the previous iteration. It’s now the only laptop in the updated Apple lineup that has the controversial and generally disliked Touch Bar. It also lacks the new MagSafe charger and offers the same two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports for both charging and peripherals. Pricing remains the same as the previous series. The baseline model costs $1,299 and features 8GB of RAM and a 2565GB SSD. The step-up $1,499 model doubles the SSD to 512GB.

The most recent addition to Apple’s iPad lineup is the iPad Air that was released this past spring, bringing an update to the only iPad that missed a refresh in 2021. The new iPad Air features Apple’s M1 chip, found in the company’s iPad Pros, along with 5G and a wider-angle, front-facing camera with the Center Stage autofocusing video feature. What it didn’t get was expanded storage: The new iPad Air models offer the same 64GB and 256GB capacities as the current versions at the same prices. You can save $40 right now at Amazon on the iPad Air, which is only $9 more than the lowest price we’ve seen for it.

The most affordable iPad remains the ninth-gen iPad, and it’s even more affordable right now at its current $49 discount at Amazon, Best Buy and Target. We’ve not seen it for less than its current $280 price. The 10.2-inch iPad features the A13 Bionic chip, Apple’s True Tone display, an improved front-facing camera and an increase in internal storage.

The small iPad Mini is $39 off right now at Amazon. Like the ninth-gen iPad, the sixth-gen iPad Mini was released last fall. It features an 8.3-inch display, the A15 Bionic chip, a USB-C charging port for a quick charge and a power button with Touch ID.

The 11- and 12.9-inch iPad Pros are now the oldest of Apple’s tablets. They were the first non-Mac devices to be made with Apple’s own M1 chip when they hit the scene last spring. You can save $50 on the baseline 11-inch model but only $10 on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro model. Bigger discounts are available on some of the higher-capacity Pro models.

10.2-inch, 9th-gen iPad (64GB): $280

Save $49 vs. Apple Store

The basic, 10.2-inch iPad didn’t receive a design overhaul like its Mini cousin, but it does serve up a faster processor, a better front-facing camera and an improved display compared with the previous, eighth-gen iPad. The biggest addition is the storage, which was doubled to 64GB on the base model and to 256GB on the step-up model. Other than that, the change you’ll most likely welcome in this age of FaceTime and Zoom calls is the front camera going from 1.2 megapixels to a wider-angle 12 megapixels. It’s also gained Center Stage to keep your mug in the frame during video calls. It’s $49 off at Amazon, Best Buy and Target right now — that’s the biggest discount we’ve seen for it.

8.3-inch, 6th-gen iPad Mini (64GB): $460

Save $39 vs. Apple Store

The iPad Mini received a complete overhaul. The new design has rounded edges, thin bezels and no home button. The power button on the side now has Touch ID, and the Lightning port has been replaced by a USB-C charging port. It runs on the new A15 Bionic chip (same as the iPhone 13) and serves up an improved and slightly larger 8.3-inch display and better cameras than the old, fifth-gen Mini. You can save $39 on it right now, which is the usual discount we’ve seen for the past few weeks. It occasionally drops to $440 and ever so briefly dropped to $400 earlier this month.

10.9-inch iPad Air (64GB): $559

Save $40 vs. Apple Store

The new 10.9-inch iPad Air features Apple’s M1 chip, found in the company’s iPad Pros, along with 5G and a wider-angle, front-facing camera with the Center Stage autofocusing video feature. What it didn’t get was expanded storage — the new iPad Air models offer the same 64GB and 256GB capacities as the current versions at the same prices. CNET’s iPad expert Scott Stein still recommends the less expensive 10.2-inch iPad for most people, but sees this iPad Air as a solid step up. Despite being available for just a few months, the new iPad Air is already on discount. You can save $40 at Amazon on the 64GB baseline model and up to $70 on the 256GB model.

Save $50 vs. Apple Store

The new 11-inch iPad Pro features Apple’s M1 chip and is available with storage capacities ranging from 128GB to 2TB. Most retailers are selling the baseline 128GB model at or above Apple’s $799 list price, but you can save $50 on the silver model at Amazon right now. If you are willing to spend more for more storage space, you can also save on some of the higher-capacity models at Amazon.

Sonos is the OG of multiroom audio, letting you listen to music around your home over a stable Wi-Fi connection, rather than spotty Bluetooth. It has expanded its lineup over the years and now offers a wide range of speakers, from outdoor and tabletop speakers to soundbars and subwoofers.

Sonos has long been known for its stellar sound quality, and its latest S2 operating system supports hi-res audio standards like Dolby Atmos. Wi-Fi playback is compatible with Apple AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect, so you can cast audio directly from your favorite music app without needing to use the Sonos app, and Sonos’ portable speakers add versatility with Bluetooth playback. Sonos’s smart speakers have Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant on board too, so you can use voice commands to control your music without picking up your phone.

Despite the variety of Sonos’ speakers, one thing remains constant: the dearth of deals. Its speakers are rarely discounted, although Sonos does offer refurbished products that look and feel new and come with a full warranty. In addition, you can occasionally find Geek Squad-certified refurbished Sonos speakers at Best Buy. Right now, for example, you can save $30 on a refurbished Sonos Roam speaker in white or save $40 on it in black. A Geek Squad-certified refurbished product has been opened and used, but inspected to make sure that it functions properly, and then cleaned and restored to original factory specifications. It might not come in the original packaging. For more, check out the details on Best Buy’s site.

Looking to buy new? There are a few speaker sets on sale at Sonos if you’re looking for a multispeaker setup. For example, you can save $30 on a Roam and Move set or save $20 on a pair of Roam speakers. You can also save $50 on a pair of Five speakers or $60 on a Move and Arc soundbar set.

We’ve assembled Sonos’ most popular products here and will update this story as we find more Sonos speakers on sale.

Sonos portable speakers

These are Sonos’ most versatile speakers, offering Wi-Fi and Bluetooth playback as well as a battery and weatherproofing for outdoor use.

Sonos

Sonos Roam

Small and portable

The Roam is the smallest and most affordable speaker in the Sonos lineup. It’s weatherproof and gets its Roam moniker for its ability to switch automatically between Wi-Fi when you’re at home and Bluetooth when you’re, well, roaming. You can bark voice commands at it via Alexa or Google Assistant when the speaker is on your Wi-Fi network. And we found it produces impressive sound for a speaker its size. A rare discount of $36 was available last month, but the Roam is now back to selling at its full list price.

Sonos Move

Big but still portable and on sale

The Move is Sonos’ largest portable smart speaker. It offers the same Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity as the Roam and is weatherproofed, too, for use indoors and out. It’s considerably bigger than the Roam and costs more than twice as much, but it also produces bigger sound with better bass. It was $80 off last month at Sonos and Best Buy but has returned to full price.

Sonos One

Indoor smart speaker

The Sonos One combines speaker smarts, sound quality and affordability. It supports both Alexa and Google Assistant and boasts a bigger, fuller sound than nearly every other smart speaker. It also supports both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth playback, giving it some versatility even if you shouldn’t leave it outdoors.

In the not-too-distant past, laptops with OLED displays were high-priced affairs geared toward graphics professionals engaged in creative work. Now, OLED displays can be found on mainstream laptops for anyone who might also enjoy stellar contrast and accurate, vibrant colors.

How does an OLED panel achieve this goodness? A quick primer: The pixels in an OLED display can be completely turned off, which means the panel can produce absolute blacks and contrast ratios superior to those of an LCD screen where the liquid crystal can only block some of the light produced by the backlight. Even an LCD with local dimming can’t match an OLED’s ability to turn individual pixels on and off. OLED displays also offer a wide color range because primary colors can hit higher saturations that let the display produce more colors. Higher saturation levels lead to more vibrant colors, and with more colors on its palette, an OLED panel can create colors that are more accurate.

Another advantage? OLED displays feature thinner layers than LCD displays and don’t require a backlight, which allows thinner and lighter laptop designs.

Read more: Best Laptop Deals at Amazon, Best Buy and Newegg

You might reasonably think that an OLED is more energy-efficient than an LCD because it doesn’t need to power a backlight and can turn individual pixels completely off. We have found, however, that OLED displays tend to have a negative impact on battery life. They do still offer decent battery life; you just can’t expect to get a longer runtime from an OLED laptop in addition to the higher image quality.

With a basic understanding of the advantages of an OLED laptop, let’s take a look at the best deals I see right now. I’ve included mainstream laptops that have approachable prices along with high-powered laptops that are currently selling at a discount — and a Chromebook. Yes, you can get an inexpensive Chromebook with an OLED display. The prices and discounts are valid at the time of this writing, and I’ll update this story as sales expire and new deals emerge.

The last tennis major tournament of 2022, the US Open, is down to its final singles match. After Iga Swiatek took the women’s singles trophy Saturday, the two top men face off to determine not only the US Open championship but the No. 1 rank in the ATP. Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz is the favorite going in against Casper Ruud, having defeated the Norwegian both times they’ve played. The 19-year old Alcaraz won three five-set matches in succession heading into today’s tilt while Ruud should be a bit more rested, with only one his matches in the tournament going five sets. The US Open men’s final is scheduled to begin today at 4 p.m. ET (1 p.m. PT) on ESPN.

To my eyes and wallet, the sweet spot for monitors in terms of getting the biggest screen with the highest resolution at an affordable price is either a 27-inch QHD display or a 32-inch UHD display. Each option produces a satisfactorily sharp picture for the size of the panel at an acceptable price.

My current monitor is a 27-inch QHD (quad HD or 2,560×1,440-pixel resolution) monitor that I bought for $250, but I did nearly go with a 32-inch UHD (ultra HD or 3,840×2,160-pixel) display that would have offered more room and more pixels for only a bit more money. Between these two different sizes, you can easily find a screen to perfectly fit your desk space, your work needs and, most importantly, your budget. The world’s creatives, hobbyists and professional gamers who worry about color gamut and refresh rates might find that they need a higher-end screen than you’ll find on our list, but these displays are big enough for most needs, and with sufficient pixel density to produce a sharp, quality image.

Be sure to check out CNET’s monitor buying guide for more info, and keep updated on the best deals I currently see among 27-inch QHD and 32-inch UHD displays. I will continue to keep this story updated as pricing fluctuates and I uncover better deals, so check back often.

Best 27-inch monitor deals

These 27-inch models feature QHD resolution and give you more screen real estate than a 24-inch, FHD (full HD or 1,920×1,080 pixels) display, and better resolution, too. And it gives you all of that for not too much more money. You might also come across 27-inch 4K displays in your search. Those displays offer a certain quality worth consideration, but in my experience, a QHD or 2K resolution is more than sufficient when stretched across a 27-inch panel.

LG

LG 27QN600-B: $247

Low list price

This is the model I ended up buying on Amazon after shopping around. I got it for a reasonable $250 — right around where it’s priced right now. It’s an IPS panel with a QHD resolution, a rated 350 nits of brightness and thin screen bezels. I like the simple stand, although I wish it offered height support. Most monitors at this price, however, don’t offer height adjustment, so I can live without it. It doesn’t have internal speakers, but those are generally terrible and not something I’d ever use when I have a Bluetooth speaker in my home office. It has one DisplayPort and two HDMI ports, giving the flexibility to connect to a variety of PCs and laptops. I’ve got no complaints about its image, which I find to be sufficiently bright and crisp.

The 32-inch version of this monitor is also an attractive buy at $280 if you want to size up.

Amazon

Koorui 27 Inch Gaming Monitor: $200

Low list price

I’m unfamiliar with the Koorui name but this monitor gets favorable reviews on Amazon and is priced at $200. That’s rare for a 27-inch monitor with a QHD resolution. Most budget monitors are rated for a dull 250 nits of brightness, but this Koorui model is rated for a more adequate 300 nits. It’s labeled as a gaming monitor because it has a 144Hz refresh rate that’s speedier than the typical 60Hz refresh rate and also features AMD FreeSync. It’s out of stock at the moment so you might have to wait for a few days or weeks for it to return.

$200 at Amazon

Newegg

Pixio PX277: $230

Save $30 at checkout

You can get this 27-inch Pixio monitor for a reasonable $230 at Amazon with you apply the $30 coupon that reduces the price at checkout. It features a QHD resolution along with AMD FreeSync and a speedy 144Hz refresh rate if you want to use it for gaming in addition to work. It’s rated for an ample 350 nits of brightness, so it should be a bit brighter than the Acer and Koorui models above.

$230 at Amazon

Viewsonic

ViewSonic VX2785-2K-MHDU: $290

Save $20

The highlight of this ViewSonic model is its USB 3.2 Type-C port, which means you can connect a MacBook and other laptops with a USB-C port (but not HDMI) to the monitor without an adapter or special conversion cable. It also supplies both HDMI and DisplayPort connections along with AMD FreeSync and is rated for 300 nits of brightness. It’s currently $20 off at Amazon and selling for a very reasonable $290 right now.

Best 32-inch monitor deals

The next step up in size, resolution and price from a 27-inch QHD display is a 32-inch UHD display. Ultra HD is also commonly referred to as 4K.

Newegg

Samsung LU32J590UQNXZA: $300

Save $40

This Samsung model has a relatively low max brightness of 270 nits, making it a better fit for a basement den or otherwise low-light room than for a sun-drenched office. It features AMD FreeSync, two HDMI ports, one DisplayPort and a headphone jack, but no USB ports. It’s currently $40 off, dropping its price to a very reasonable $300.

$300 at AmazonYou’re receiving price alerts for Samsung LU32J590UQNXZA: $300

Newegg

ViewSonic VX3211-4K-MHD: $330

Low list price

This is one of the more affordable 32-inch 4K monitors and features HDMI and DisplayPort connections, a 300-nit brightness rating, and built-in speakers. It also supports HDR10 and AMD FreeSync and comes wrapped in a compact if basic package with thin bezels.

$330 at Newegg

LG

LG 32UN500: $300

Save $50

This LG is similar to the above two monitors — 32-inch 4K display with FreeSync and built-in speakers — but is the brightest of the trio with a rating of 350 nits. It’s $50 off at Best Buy, which puts it at the same price as the above Samsung and ViewSonic models.

$300 at Best BuyYou’re receiving price alerts for LG 32UN500: $300

AOC

AOC U32P2CA: $410

USB-C with low list price

This AOC model stands out from the 32-inch UHD pack here because it features a USB Type-C port, which means you can connect a MacBook and other laptops with a USB-C port to the monitor without an adapter or special conversion cable. It’s rated for a sufficient 350 nits of brightness and also includes a pair of HDMI ports and a DisplayPort connection along with integrated speakers. It’s rare to find a USB-C monitor at this size and resolution for this low of a price.

$410 at Amazon

Dell

Dell S3221QS: $400

Save $200

At 32 inches, a curved display starts to become an option and not just for gamers. A curved display lets you sit closer without needing to crane your head as much to see the whole screen. This curved Dell display features a gentle 1,800R curvature along with AMD FreeSync and integrated speakers. It also boasts a wealth of adjustability with tilt, swivel and height adjustment. It has a bounty of connectivity with two HDMI ports, one DisplayPort connection, two USB-A ports, a USB-B port and headphone jack. And it’s currently $200 off direct from Dell.

Did you recently upgrade to a new M2 MacBook Pro? Maybe you’re the owner of an earlier M1 MacBook Air or Pro, or you have an older version of the MacBook. No matter the case, know that no laptop comes straight out of the box optimized for maximum performance — even one with an Apple logo.

While it’s certainly exciting to unwrap a new MacBook, there are a handful of tweaks, tips and fixes you should do on Day 1 that go beyond your default MacBook settings. I’ve put together some of my personal favorites here that will make your device easier to use.

So, after you’ve jumped through the initial screens from the Mac Setup Assistant that had you log in with your Apple ID, connect to a network and so on, consider changing these settings, or at least check them out, on your new MacBook.

Check for updates

Has Apple released an update to MacOS since it built your MacBook? Find out by clicking the Apple button in the upper-left corner of your screen and then clicking About This Mac. You should be staring at the General tab of the About This Mac window. If so, click the Software Update button, which will launch the System Preferences to check for updates.

Optimize battery charging

If your MacBook is going to spend most of its time plugged in, you’ll definitely want to change this setting. MacOS can learn your charging habits to reduce battery aging. Click on the battery icon on the menu bar at the top of your display and select Battery Preferences from the drop-down menu. (If you don’t see a battery icon, go to System Preferences > Energy Saver and check the box for Show battery status in menu bar.) At the bottom of the list of options, select Optimized battery charging. This will slow down your charging once the battery hits 80%.

Set up Siri

Siri should be enabled by default, but if you would prefer to use Siri only on your iPhone, then you can disable Siri by going to System Preferences > Siri and unchecking the box for Enable Ask Siri. If you plan on using Siri frequently, then you can use this Siri window to choose Siri’s voice, language and a keyboard shortcut.

Customize the Touch Bar

If you have one of the last remaining Intel-based MacBook Pro models with the Touch Bar, then head to System Preferences > Keyboard and click the Customize Touch Bar button and then simply drag the buttons you want to show up on the default view of the Touch Bar to the Touch Bar below the display. Don’t worry, they’ll make the leap from your display across the hinge and to the Touch Bar.

Sync folders via iCloud

I find it incredibly useful to sync the Desktop and Documents folders between my two Macs and my iOS devices. To sync these two folders, go to System Preferences > Apple ID and click iCloud in the left column and check the box next to iCloud Drive. Click Options next to iCloud Drive and select Desktop and Documents folders.

Choose default browser

Even though it uses more system resources than Safari, I use Chrome instead of Safari because the favicons help me keep track of all of my open tabs. To set a default browser, go to System Preferences > General and make a selection other than Safari for Default web browser.

Set scrolling direction

A MacBook’s “natural” scrolling direction doesn’t feel natural to me. If you want the two-finger swipe gesture to scroll vertically in the opposite way, head to System Preferences > Trackpad and click on the Scroll & Zoom tab. Next, uncheck the box for Scroll direction: Natural.

Add and remove items from Dock

Apple throws a number of stock apps into the Dock at the bottom of the screen. You can make room for the apps you use most frequently by removing others you don’t need in the Dock. To remove an app from the Dock, simply click on its icon in the Dock and drag it to the desktop until you see Remove appear above the icon and then let go. Poof, it’s gone! To add an app to the Dock, open it and then right-click on its icon in the Dock and mouse over the Option line in the menu and click Keep in Dock.

Move the Dock

The Dock sits at the bottom of your screen, but on a widescreen MacBook display, you might find it better to have it on the side. To move the Dock, go to System Preferences > Dock & Menu Bar and choose either Left or Right for Position on Screen. While you’re there, you can also drag a slider to adjust the size of the Dock. You can also make it disappear from view when you aren’t using it by checking the box for Automatically hide and show the Dock.

Show battery percentage

Like an iPhone, a MacBook displays a small battery icon at the top of the display to show how much battery power remains. It’s more helpful if next to this icon the percentage of battery you have left is also displayed. To show the percentage, go to System Preferences > Dock & Menu Bar and choose Battery from the left column. Check the box next to Show Percentage and it should instantly appear next to the battery icon on the Menu Bar.

Stop auto-play videos

Safari now combats two of the bigger internet annoyances: autoplay videos and ad trackers. Ad tracking is stopped by default, but there is a global setting for stopping autoplay videos that you’ll want to enable. Open Safari’s Preferences and click on the Websites tab. Choose Auto-Play from the left panel and for When visiting other websites at the bottom of the window, select Never Auto-Play or Stop Media with Sound (if you are okay with muted videos playing) and sit back and rejoice in the silence.

Work the Night Shift

Staring at a blue screen before bed can shift your body’s natural clock and make it difficult to get a good night’s sleep. With Apple’s Night Shift feature, the colors of your display are shifted to the warmer end of the spectrum during the evening hours. Head to System Preferences > Displays and click the Night Shift tab. You can set Night Shift to come on from sunset to sunrise, or you can select a custom time period. Use the slider to adjust the color temperature of the effect between less warm and more. Once you start using Night Shift, you’ll wonder how you ever sat in front of a cold, blue screen in the evening hours.

Make your desktop dynamic

With MacOS MojaveApple introduced a dynamic wallpaper that slowly changes its lighting throughout the day, going from a bright, sunny desert scene during the day and transitioning to a cool, dark screen at night. You can find it by going to System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver. While Mojave started out with just two dynamic wallpapers — Mojave and Solar Gradients — there are now several to choose from and sites where you can download more.

Try out dark mode

MacOS Mojave also delivered an honest-to-goodness dark mode for Macs. Go to System Preferences > General and you’ll see the Light and Dark options at the top for Appearance. On most apps, dark mode turns the background black and text white. Want to use both Light and Dark options? Select Auto and buttons, menus and windows will change throughout the day.

Set hours for Do Not Disturb

Along with overly blue screens, notifications have no place in my home after a certain hour. As with iOS, MacOS lets you disable notifications in the evening so you aren’t disturbed while watching Netflix or sleeping. Go to System Preferences > Notifications and check the box Turn on Do Not Disturb. By default, it’s set for the hours of 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. but you can set your own Do Not Disturb Window. There are options to enable the feature when your MacBook’s display is sleeping or when you are mirroring the display to a TV or projector (and presumably watching a movie or show or video). You can also let calls come through (if you use your MacBook to answer calls) or just repeated calls, which might mean there is an emergency or something urgent to which you may need to respond.

Set app download tolerance level

If you want to download apps from the web at large and not just from the Mac App Store, you’ll need to tell MacOS to loosen up on the reins a bit. Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy, click the General tab and then click the lock in the lower-left corner and enter your password to make changes. Next, for Allow apps downloaded from, choose App Store and identified developers.

Choose how quickly your MacBook locks

macbook-desktop-screensaver-settings.pngmacbook-desktop-screensaver-settings.png

Screenshot by Josh Goldman/CNET

While on the Security & Privacy page, you can set the length of time your MacBook can sit idle before the screen locks. It’s more convenient to set a longer time but also less secure. The time period to set here doesn’t start ticking until the screen saver begins, so you also need to set the length of time before your screen saver kicks in. Go to System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver and you can select the style of your screen saver and also the time by using the drop-down menu at the top of the window.
