Who doesn’t love climbing into their comfy bed after a long, exhausting day? You wiggle down in the soft sheet and snuggle with a nice warm blanket. Maybe you even put on a sleep mask and get ready to take a nap. But, wait. When was the last time you actually washed your bedding? If you can’t remember, that heavenly oasis may quickly feel less blissful. It might even be a little gross.

Bedding, especially sheets, can easily collect dead skin, dust mites and bodily fluids. And that’s not to mention how pillowcases are often soiled with makeup, oils and lotions, along with hair and skin products. With this in mind, you need to make washing the bedding part of your weekly routine. To help get you started, here’s the best way to wash your sheets. How often should I change or wash my sheets?

The common rule of thumb is washing sheets every other week. Ideally, sleep experts recommend changing sheets every week, but agree that every two weeks is the absolute longest one should go sleeping on the same set of sheets. 

Why do we wash our sheets and bedding?

Hygiene is always important — even when it comes to our bedding. If you can’t see stains or smell any odor, it doesn’t mean your sheets are clean. Sheets can accumulate dead skin, mites, animal dander, pollen, makeup, bodily secretions and more grim, which may cause discomfort or skin rashes.

One of the biggest reasons to regularly clean sheets is due to sweat. In a May study, 41% of participants reported experiencing night sweats in a month, and generally, people tend to run hot when covered in blankets or living in warmer climates. Sweat can soak into the sheets which can clog up the fibers and make the sheets smell. 

You should also wash your sheets more often if:

• You have allergies or asthma
• You have sensitive skin



• You sweat or overheat frequently 
• You sleep naked
• You sleep with a pet
• You eat in bed
• You get in bed before showing
• You lay in bed wearing clothes you wore out in public
• You have an infection or open wound that touches the bedding 

What’s the best way to machine-wash my sheets?

Most bedsheets are machine-washable and aren’t much of a hassle to clean. Cotton and linen bedsheets are especially easy, while silk and satin are a bit more temperamental, requiring cold temperatures and slow spin cycles. It’s best to always check the care tag on your sheets, but this is the best method to machine-wash the majority of sheet sets:

1. Don’t overwhelm the machine

It can be tempting to just throw every pillowcase, fitted sheet and comforter right into the machine, but throwing everything in at once may be too much and you may not get a good clean. I recommend washing the fitted and flat sheets together with your pillowcases, and then washing any heavier comforter, quilt or throw blanket separately. 

And definitely don’t throw in any clothing or towels in with your bedding because it could leach color or have buttons and zippers that will damage delicate sheets. 

2. Check bedsheets for stains

Stains are better taken care of pre-wash, so take a few minutes to examine your sheets or pillowcases for stubborn blemishes. You can use a gentle dish soap and water, or baking soda and water mixture to let sit for a few minutes if you spot a dark mark or makeup stain. 

3. Measure out detergent

Less is usually more when it comes to using detergent. Too much detergent can lead to the machine using excess water or cause build-up in the washing machine’s pipes. Most detergents are acceptable to use on cotton and linen sheets, but choose a detergent for delicate fabrics to wash silk and satin sheets. There are many silk or satin-friendly detergents on the market. 

A good rule of thumb is to use 2 ounces (1/4 cup) or half a cap full of liquid laundry detergent for a regular sized load of bedding. You can also use 4 ounces (1/2 cup) or 1 full cap of liquid laundry detergent for a larger load of bulkier items. 

I also recommend skipping the fabric softener since it can weaken the fabric. 

4. Adjust the settings

I always recommend checking the care label for the ideal washing temperature since some fabrics can shrink in the wash. It’s best to use the hottest temperature the sheets can tolerate since hot water most effectively kills germs and bacteria. Colder cycles may not fully get rid of the grime. 

Polyester blends are best in warm water, while cotton can tolerate hot water. Silk and satin sheets should be washed on a cold, gentle cycle.

5. Dry completely

For most sheets, you can use the dryer on a low to medium heat. Satin and silk sheets would do best to air dry since they can be easily damaged even on a low-heat dryer cycle. 

You can also throw in a few dryer balls with your bedding since they allow gaps, helping the bulkier sheets to dry more quickly and evenly (I always hate when I think I’m finally ready to make my bed and I realize one whole section is still damp from being bundled up). 

You can avoid cleaning your bedsheets as often by making it a habit to not eat in bed, not sleeping with your pet and only cuddling down in the sheets after a shower. While it may seem like a hassle to strip your bed every week, it’s well worth the extra effort, so you can sleep and relax a little easier.

Google will no longer be developing the Pixelbook laptop, according to a report Monday from The Verge. The report, citing an unnamed source, said that the tech giant has canceled all plans to release the next version of the Pixelbook, and is also transferring the employees building the computer to other teams across the company. 

The next Pixelbook was rumored for release in 2023, and was reportedly “far along in development.” As recently as May, Google hardware chief Rick Osterloh said there would be future Pixelbooks.

Google didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

This move seems to be part of the company’s effort to save money. The report notes that Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in July that Google intends to slow hiring and cut some projects in light of global economic uncertainty.

Google began its Pixel branding in 2017 with the first Pixelbook Chromebook. The tech giant released the Pixelbook Go, an ultra lightweight Chromebook, in 2019. Google has also launched Pixel phones — announcing its Pixel 7 Series at its annual developer conference in May — Pixel earbuds, and is reportedly set to release its first Pixel smartwatch this fall.

Walmart on Monday said it’s partnering with Paramount Global to offer a free Paramount Plus Essential subscription to all Walmart Plus members. The offer will start in September and will give Walmart Plus members access to shows such as 1883 and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, among other films and live sports. 

The offer comes at no additional cost to the Walmart membership program, which includes same-day delivery on thousands of store items. Walmart Plus costs $98 a year or $12.95 a month. The Paramount Plus Essential Plan subscription is $5 a month or $50 a year by itself.

Walmart is just the latest company to experiment with added perks to increase membership. Walmart has been toying with adding a subscription streaming deal to expand its Walmart Plus numbers in an attempt to challenge Amazon and its Prime membership program. Amazon Prime members have access to the Prime Video catalog that features titles such as Top Gun, the Lord of the Rings series, Downton Abbey and more. 

Amazon Prime has over 200 million subscribers currently, while Walmart Plus has garnered about 11.5 million members since its 2020 debut.

Looking for a way to send your father a meal for Father’s Day? Or maybe you want to spice up your anniversary dinner by ordering a meal from another city? Uber Eats has you covered with its newly launched Nationwide shipping feature. 

Uber announced its new Nationwide shipping feature Tuesday as demand for shipping food across US cities and states has increased over the last several years. Users can now have products shipped from their favorite merchants in New York City, Miami and Los Angeles. Uber says more cities will be included soon. 

Ordering with Nationwide shipping takes just a few steps. Open the Uber Eats app, select Home and scroll until you see Nationwide shipping. Choose the merchant you’d like to order from and add items to your cart just as you would with a local Uber Eats purchase. Confirm your order in the cart, checkout and place the order. You’ll then receive an email with tracking info to follow the status of your order. 

Uber’s Nationwide shipping is taking a similar approach to Goldbelly, an edible e-commerce site that ships food and food kits from across the US. Many other companies are experimenting with delivery options this year, including Walmart expanding its drone delivery service, and DoorDash offering beer and wine deliveries. 

This is just the latest Uber delivery feature. In May, Uber announced it will now deliver from over 70 grocery outlet stores and offer a new Comfort Electric tier in the Uber app so users can request a ride in an electric vehicle. Uber is also launching voice ordering, in-venue ordering and pilot autonomous deliveries this year.

Instagram is rolling out a new Amber Alerts feature on Wednesday in honor of Global Missing Children’s Day, which will allow app users to see and share notices of missing children in their area, according to a blog post from Instagram. 

The Amber Alert will be activated by law enforcement and will appear in the Instagram feed of users who are in the local area. The alert will include a photo of the missing person, with other key details of the abduction such as location and physical description, which can then be reshared or reposted. 

“Instagram is a platform based on the power of photos, making it a perfect fit for the Amber Alert program,” Michelle DeLaune, president and CEO at the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, said in the blog post. “We know that photos are a critical tool in the search for missing children, and by expanding the reach to the Instagram audience, we’ll be able to share photos of missing children with so many more people.”

The alert feature will be launched in 25 countries within the next couple of weeks, including the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, Ukraine, Korea, Mexico and many more countries across Europe, Asia and South America.

Facebook launched an Amber Alerts feature in 2015 and has since posted hundreds of alerts from around the world to help authorities search and locate the missing child.

The update includes two main enhancements: The Apple Cash card in the Wallet app will now allow customers to send and request money, and a new Apple Podcasts setting will allow users to limit episodes stored on devices and automatically delete older ones, according to Apple’s release notes.

This may be Apple’s last update to the iOS 15‌ operating system, considering the company is expected to announce iOS 16 at its Worldwide Developers Conference next month.

Popular messaging app Telegram seems to be exploring a new way to make money: a “premium” subscription with exclusive stickers and reaction emojis. 

As earlier reported by Android Police, beta testers for Telegram’s iOS app noticed the features in version 8.7.2. Telegram users will reportedly be prompted to sign up for a paid subscription once they select certain reactions or stickers in the app. Users who have the free version reportedly won’t be able to view these premium features in conversation threads. 

Since Telegram Premium is merely a rumor as of now, there’s no additional information on how much the premium subscription would cost, when it would be released, and what other features or exclusives could be added. 

Telegram has made several money moves over the last year. In December 2020, Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov unveiled plans for the app to make revenue through ad sales and extra paid features. The company has also recently expanded into livestreaming, chatbots, cryptocurrency and more to monetize the platform. 

Telegram — like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and other messaging apps — must figure out how to generate revenue within the app while also not disrupting the chat function.

After many months of speculation about its potential release, design and features, we may have gotten a good look at the rumored Google Pixel Watch. On Monday, Android Central published nine photos of what seems to be Google’s upcoming smartwatch. 

While not confirmed until Google officially announces the Pixel Watch, the leaked images line up with previous reports, including rumors about the minimalist design, the crown and the potential hidden button. CNET’s been following the rumors surrounding the smartwatch, compiling a full list of clues you can find here. 

The images were reportedly taken and leaked under somewhat strange circumstances: Someone allegedly found the smartwatch at a restaurant in the US. The finder, who asked to remain anonymous, didn’t share the location with Android Central. 

The person who is allegedly in possession of the watch posted more details to an Ask Me Anything (AMA) post on Reddit under the username u/tagtech414. After posting a photo to confirm they indeed have the watch, the details began to unfold: A co-worker found the watch at the restaurant where they work and kept it “a few weeks” in case the owners came to pick up the watch. After a few weeks with no one claiming the watch, u/tagtech414 took it to investigate. 

Here’s what u/tagtech414 posted about the watch: 

• The source wasn’t able to see the user interface but did see a white Google logo appear when attempting to turn it on.
• A physical crown sits between two buttons on the side.
• The bezel is actually quite large.
• The watch face is about 1.5 inches in diameter and half an inch thick.
• The watch’s band is a proprietary Google band, looking similar to the bendable Apple Watch Sport bands.
• The watch comes in a rumored black color.
• The bottom seems to be coated in glass like the Apple Watch. 

The source didn’t find a charger and the battery is now dead, so we won’t have any more details on what the watch can do until the release, which could be announced or at least teased during Google I/O in May. A previous report from Insider stated the device may debut in the spring, but that’s subject to change based on how internal testing goes.

While we still don’t know when it will be launched, how much it will cost or the regions in which Google plans to release the watch, it’s likely the watch will come this spring or fall and will run on the new Wear OS software.

DoorDash is launching a new, discounted subscription plan for college students. DashPass for Students, announced Monday, will cost $4.99 per month — half the price of the standard monthly DashPass subscription — or $48 for the annual student plan option.

The student plan comes with several “always-on” benefits: unlimited free delivery on orders above $12, DoorDash credits of 5% back on pickup orders from eligible restaurants, and members-only promos and exclusive menu items.

“Access to convenient, fast, and affordable ways to get everything you need is key for busy students on the go,” CMO Kofi Amoo-Gottfried said in a statement. “With the launch of DashPass for Students, we’re excited to change the game for students with a plan that’s designed specifically for them and provides access to everything from late night study snacks and grocery items to school supplies and dorm essentials.”

All undergraduate and graduate students at accredited colleges and universities across the US are eligible for the $5 student plan.

Apple has reportedly filed three new Mac computers in the Eurasian Economic Database, suggesting Apple will be releasing new products at a rumored virtual event expected to take place on or around March 8, according to Consomac. While there is very little information about the potential new products, they are all reported as running MacOS Monterey. 

Earlier this month, Bloomberg reported that Apple is planning to host its first virtual product event of the year in early March. This event is rumored to debut a new low-cost 5G iPhone SE 3, an iPad Air 5 and potentially a new Mac. Apple has not confirmed any news surrounding potential new products or the rumored event.

Apple is required by law to file new products that rely on encryption technologies in the database, and historically has filed devices close to an upcoming product launch event. The filing suggests that Apple will host an event sometime next month as Bloomberg reported, but there is no guarantee. There have been instances in which products have been listed on the database, yet not released for close to a year. 

CNET has been monitoring the rumors about a potential spring Apple event for a while now. In addition to the iPhone SE and iPad Air, we expect Apple to release a slew of new products in 2022, including a faster Mac Mini, a new Apple display, an updated 27-inch iMac, MacBook Air and Mac Pro, the iPhone 14, the Apple Watch 8 and AirPods Pro 2. 

Apple did not immediately respond to request for comment.
