This story is part of Taxes 2023, CNET’s coverage of the best tax software, tax tips and everything else you need to file your return and track your refund.

Filing your income taxes isn’t easy, but if you’re lucky, there’s a reward at the end — some cash back via your tax refund. Tax changes in 2023 have led to slightly smaller refunds than last year, but the average tax refund is still $2,903 so far this season.

Once you’ve finished and filed your tax return, there’s not much to do except wait for your tax refund. However, it’s easy to tell when your IRS money will arrive so you can plan for it financially.

Whatever format you chose for your tax refund, we’ll show you how to track the status of your return and any money the IRS owes you. For more tax tips, learn about tax breaks for homeowners and the biggest tax credits for 2023.

How do I track my tax refund?

The quickest way to monitor your tax refund is with the IRS’ Where’s My Refund? page, which also lets you know if your return has been rejected because of errors. To use the IRS’ tracker tools, you’ll need to provide a Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, your filing status (single, married or head of household) and your refund amount in whole dollars.

Go to the Get Refund Status page on the IRS website and enter your personal data, then press Submit. If you’re not taken to a page that shows your refund status, you may be asked to verify your personal tax data and try again. If all the information looks correct, you’ll need to enter the date you filed your taxes, along with whether you filed electronically or on paper.Make sure it’s been at least 24 hours before you start tracking an online return, or up to four weeks if you mailed your return. Read onBest Tax Software for 2023

How do I track a refund from a previous year?

The Where’s My Refund tool lists the federal refund information the IRS has from the past two years. If you’re looking for return details from previous years, you’ll need to check your IRS online account

From there, you’ll be able to see the total amount you owe, your payment history, key information about your most recent tax return, notices you’ve received from the IRS and your address on file.

Use the IRS2Go mobile app to track your tax refund

The IRS2Go app is available for both iOS and Android.

Internal Revenue Service

The IRS also has a mobile app called IRS2Go that can monitor your tax refund status. It’s available for both iOS and Android and in English and Spanish. You’re able to see if your return has been received and approved in the app, and if a refund has been sent.

To log in, you’ll need your Social Security number, filing status and the expected amount of your refund. The IRS updates the app overnight, so if you don’t see a status change, check back the following day.

What does the status of my tax return mean?

The IRS tools will show you one of three messages explaining your tax return status.

  • Received: The IRS now has your tax return and is working to process it.
  • Approved: The IRS has processed your return and confirmed the amount of your refund, if you’re owed one.
  • Sent: Your refund is now on its way to your bank via direct deposit or as a paper check sent to your mailbox. (Here’s how to change the address on file if you’ve moved.)

Why does Where’s My Refund Show ‘Tax Topic 152’ or an IRS error message?

Although the Where’s My Refund tool typically shows a status of Received, Approved or Sent, there are a variety of other messages some users may see.

One of the most common is Tax Topic 152, indicating you’re likely getting a refund but it hasn’t been approved or sent yet. The notice simply links out to an informational topic page on the IRS FAQ website explaining the types and timing of tax refunds.

The delay could be an automated message for taxpayers claiming the child tax credit or earned income tax credit sent because of additional fraud protection steps.

Tax Topic 151 means your tax return is now under review by the IRS. The agency either needs to verify certain credits or dependents, or it has determined that your tax refund will be reduced to pay money that it believes you owe. You’ll need to wait about four weeks to receive a notice from the IRS explaining what you need to do to resolve the status.

There are other IRS refund codes that a small percentage of tax filers receive, indicating freezes, math errors on tax returns or undelivered checks. The College Investor offers a list of IRS refund reference codes and errors and their meaning.

Should I call the IRS about my tax refund?

Getting live phone assistance is notoriously difficult at the IRS. In 2022, only about 13% of taxpayers reached a human being, according to Erin M. Collins, the national taxpayer advocate.Congress has increased the agency’s funding, and the IRS said it has hired more than 5,000 new telephone representatives. Still, the agency says you should only call if it’s been at least 21 days since you filed your taxes online, or if the Where’s My Refund tool tells you to. You can call 800-829-1040 or 800-829-8374 during regular business hours. Otherwise, the IRS is directing taxpayers to the Let Us Help You page on its website and to in-person help at Taxpayer Assistance Centers around the country. You can contact your local IRS office or call 844-545-5640 to make an appointment. If you’re eligible for assistance, you can also contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service at 877-777-4778.

What does ‘IRS TREAS 310’ mean on my bank statement?

If you receive your tax refund by direct deposit, you may see IRS TREAS 310 listed in the transaction. The 310 code simply identifies the transaction as a refund from a filed tax return in the form of electronic payment. You may also see TAX REF in the description field for a refund.

If you see a 449 instead of 310, it means your refund may have been offset for delinquent debt.

Why was my tax refund mailed instead of direct deposit?

There are a few reasons why your refund may be mailed rather than deposited electronically into your account. Keep in mind:

  • You must provide the correct account and routing number.
  • Funds can only be deposited into an account with your name or your spouse’s name (or both for a joint account).
  • The IRS can only direct deposit up to three refunds into one account.

If you’re receiving a refund check in the mail, here’s how to track it from the IRS office to your mailbox.

Buying a newer, more advanced vehicle is always exciting — but before you do, you need to decide what you’ll do with your current car. For instance, you could trade it in at a dealership, sell it or donate it to charity for a nice tax deduction. If you plan to sell or trade it in, there are a few things you can do to get the most money for your vehicle that could pay off big.

Money Tips logoMoney Tips logo

If you’re looking to sell a car on your own, you can list it on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. Sites like Kelley Blue Book let you place an ad for an additional cost.

See below for four things to add to your to-do list before selling a car if you want to get more cash toward your new car. For another money tip, here’s a sneaky factor to quickly boost your credit score.

Get your car fully detailed by professionals before you sell it

Would you pay the same amount for a dirty car versus a clean one? Probably not, and car dealerships are the same way. So instead of getting your car appraised while you still have crumbs in the driver’s seat from your morning breakfast sandwiches, get it detailed first.

Detailing is more than merely cleaning your car: Professionals will make cosmetic fixes and use high-tech coatings to make your car look like new. Your entire car will get a deep clean, including seats, floors, windows and the entire exterior of the vehicle. The detailers may also touch up the paint.

It costs roughly $200 on average to get a medium-size vehicle detailed, according to Autotrader, but a car that’s in tip-top shape can earn you more when you go to trade in a vehicle.

Finish any minor repairs before you sell or appraise your car

Does your car have an oil leak or a cracked windshield? It’s best to get those problems fixed before taking it to a dealership for an appraisal or listing it for sale. Minor automotive repairs can be taken care of at a mechanic shop and can help prevent buyers from trying to get your car for a lower price.

Repairing common problems, including windshield damage, small dents and minor engine issues, before an appraisal by the dealer can net hundreds of dollars more on your trade-in, according to a KBB representative.

“If you fix minor dings for $550, that could potentially be the difference of an estimated $1,000-$3,000,” Renee Valdez, senior advice editor at Kelley Blue Book, told CNET. This is because the dealer won’t need to spend that money to make the repairs.

Double-check your car’s maintenance to get top dollar for it

Before getting an estimate of your car’s value, make sure that your car’s maintenance is current. You don’t want to show up to a dealership with bald tires, squeaky brakes and oil that needed to be changed 5,000 miles ago.

A regularly serviced car shows that you’ve taken good care of your vehicle and that there aren’t hidden problems. Bringing your car’s maintenance up to speed can help you make more money than if you brought it in as-is.

Get a quote for your car before trading it in at a dealership

Make sure you know exactly what your car is worth before taking it to a dealership or listing it for sale online. You can use tools like Kelley Blue Book Instant Cash Offer or the Carfax Sell My Car tool.

Kelley Blue Book Instant Cash Offer doesn’t guarantee you more money for a car, but the tool will save you time by not having to drive around to different dealerships and compare offers. Participating dealers are required to honor Instant Cash Offers as long as the information and condition you provided about your car are accurate.

With Carfax Sell My Car, you can determine the value of your car by filling out an application. Then, you can select local dealers to get free appraisals and cash offers. The offers are good for three days, and you’re not required to sell your car if you don’t like any of them.

iOS 16 is out, and you can download it right now, which means that you can finally use one of the more anticipated features — the ability to unsend and edit text messages on the iPhone

If you make a grammatical mistake or even text the wrong person, you now have 15 minutes to edit what your message says and two minutes to unsend it, essentially deleting the text. Want to know more about how the new iOS 16 feature works? We’ll explain it all below.

CNET Tech Tips logoCNET Tech Tips logo

If you haven’t updated to iOS 16 yet, here’s how to download and install it on your iPhone and iPad. Other new features on iPhone include new lock screen customization options and Lockdown Mode.

Edit messages you’ve already sent

If you use messaging tools like Slack, you’ve likely edited at least one — or 100 — of the messages you’ve sent. Whether you made a typo or your message contains incorrect data, the editing feature is a nice way to make your corrections quickly. With iOS 16, you’ll also be able to edit your messages sent from your iPhone within 15 minutes of sending.

To edit a text message, you’ll need to launch Messages and go into any thread that is using iMessage, which you probably know as blue text. This feature will not work with SMS text messages (green texts). Now, press and hold your finger down on the message you wish to edit. This will bring up the Tapback reactions and the quick action menu. Finally, tap Edit

Editing a text message on iOS 16Editing a text message on iOS 16

Even if you edit a text message, the recipient will still be able to see any old messages.

Nelson Aguilar/CNET

The text message will then become editable. You can delete the entire message, fix any mistakes or add more text to it. Once you’re finished, hit the blue checkmark button on the right side to save your edits. You can only edit a single message up to 5 times.

An actionable Edited button will appear underneath your edited text message. The person on the other end will also know that the message has been edited, and if they tap on Edited, all previous versions of your text message will appear above the edited text message, in slightly grayed-out chat bubbles.

Immediately recall any messages you accidentally sent

Accidental messages happen way too often. Maybe you tapped the send button when you meant to select an emoji. Or perhaps you messaged the wrong person entirely. In either case, you’ll be able to recall those messages with iOS 16. Unlike with the edit message feature, you only have 2 minutes to unsend a text.

To unsend a text message, launch the Messages app, press and hold down on the message (blue text only) you want to unsend, and tap Undo Send.

The text message will disappear from your thread, on both your end and the recipient’s. A message will appear on your thread, stating that your message has been unsent, but that the recipient may have already seen it.

Unsending a text message on iOS 16Unsending a text message on iOS 16

You only have 2 minutes to unsend a text message.

Nelson Aguilar/CNET

Unfortunately, if the other person is running anything older than iOS 16, the message won’t actually be unsent. The recipient will see a gray text status message that says, “[Name] unsent a message” if they’ve already viewed the text. This is similar to the Delete Message feature that apps like WhatsApp and Signal already have, which also show a similar message after a text is recalled.

And if you edit a text message that’s been sent to someone running iOS 15 or earlier, they’ll receive a text message for every edit you make.

For more, these are the most annoying iOS 16 features and how to fix them. Also, if you’ve already installed iOS 16 on your phone, do these three things now.

A feature that’s been available on the Apple Watch since 2019 is now coming to the iPhone. The new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will each have an always-on display that shows the clock and selected widgets on the iPhone screen, even when it’s locked and not in active use.

An always-on screen that stays illuminated after the initial timeout period is a technology that’s been available on Android phones (especially Samsung Galaxy devices) for years. Apple adding it to its iPhone 14 Pro models signals a possible adoption by all iPhones down the line.

See at Apple

Alongside the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, which you can buy in deep purple, Apple unveiled the new iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, a supercharged Apple Watch UltraApple Watch 8 and AirPods Pro 2. Now that iOS 16 is available, you can check out the best new features here.

We’ll explain what iPhone 14’s version of the always-on display feature is and how it will work. For more iPhone news, don’t miss how the new Dynamic Island notch redesign works in iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.

iPhone 14 Pro, Pro Max Feature Always-on Display

How does the always-on display work?

Normally, when you lock your iPhone, the lock screen shuts off and you either have to press a button, raise your phone or tap your screen to make it active again. With an always-on display, your lock screen doesn’t turn off — it stays dim — so you can easily glance at the time, widgets and live activities without touching your phone.

For instance, when you get a text message, you generally have only a few seconds to look it over before your iPhone screen turns off. With an always-on display, you have unlimited time to view the message.

Apple’s Newest Releases

When you turn the iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max face down on a surface or put it in your pocket, the screen will darken as a way to save on battery life, since you won’t need to “glance” at the screen when it’s in a pocket or upside down on a table.

Will it drain my iPhone battery faster?

Apple said the always-on display can operate at a refresh rate as low as 1Hz (i.e. once per second) with a new low-power mode. It also uses multiple co-processors in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max chips to refresh the display using minimal power.

Can I turn off the always-on setting?

Apple didn’t say whether this feature would be optional, but it’s likely you’ll be able to turn it off in your settings. Apple Watch users are able to turn off the always-on display in the Display & Brightness setting, so that’s likely where you’d turn it off on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. You can customize a similar setting on Samsung phones as well.

The post iOS 16’s 2 Essential Updates for Apple Maps: How They Make Travel Easier first appeared on Joggingvideo.com.

This story is part of Focal Point iPhone 2022, CNET’s collection of news, tips and advice around Apple’s most popular product.

Today’s release of iOS 16 — Apple’s latest version of its iPhone operating system — adds a long list of cool, new features, and Apple Maps showcases several of them. Some of the additions to Apple Maps include high-resolution imagery for apps such as Zillow and new tools for developers that could make rentable scooters and bikes easier to find.

Along with these updates, Apple Maps will roll out its redesigned map in 11 more countries later this year. Those features include cycling directions and Look Around, a new 3D city experience. It also plans to add detailed maps for 16 more major cities in the US and across the world.

Two of the biggest new features for iPhone users, however, are more immediately apparent — multistop routing for directions and more comprehensive information about public transit options. Read on to learn how these new features will work on your iPhone. For more, see how iOS 16 will now let you edit or unsend text messages you’ve already sent.

Apple’s Newest Releases

Multistop routing finally lands on Apple Maps

If you often use Google Maps for features that Apple Maps lacks, that could change now that iOS 16 is here. One major update for the native iPhone Maps app is called multistop routing. Apple has said previously that it was one of its “most requested features.”

With this new feature, you can now plan up to 15 stops on your iPhone. You can also start planning your trip on your Mac and send it to your iPhone when you’re ready to go. Maps will store your previous routes in Recents so they’re easier to find when planning your commute.

To get started, you’ll open the Maps app on your iPhone and type in your first destination. To add more stops, you’ll tap Add Stop and type in your next destination. For instance, you can type in a coffee shop you want to stop at first and then your work address.

If you’re driving and need to add an additional stop, you can ask Siri to add it to your route. This can help prevent distractions so you can stay focused on the road.

New public transit features provide more info

If you use public transit to commute to work or to grab a bite to eat in the evenings, Apple has added new transit features to make your trip more convenient. You can now see how much the fares for your trip will cost.

You can also now add a new transit card from Apple Maps to your Apple Wallet app. If your transit card balance is running low, you’ll receive an alert so you can reload it without leaving the Maps app. All you’ll need to do is tap the Reload button.

For more about iOS 16, learn about the new lock screen customization or the ability to automatically remove people, pets or objects from photos.

If you’re ready to trade in your old AirPods for the latest AirPods Pro 2nd generation from Apple, we’ve got bad news. Apple won’t accept your used earbuds.

While Apple accepts trade-ins for iPhones as far back as the iPhone 7 and the Apple Watch — and gives credit for several eligible Android devices — trade-in offers don’t extend to AirPods of any sort. In fact, your only option through Apple is to recycle your old earbuds.

We’ll explain why you can’t trade in your old AirPods to Apple, and what your other options are. For more, check out the new Apple Watch 8 Series and Apple Watch Ultra, as well as the new iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, and the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.

Why won’t Apple take old AirPods as a trade-in?

One reason you may not be able to trade in old AirPods could come down to sanitation. Earbuds by definition enter the human body — in this case, the ear canal where ear wax (also known as cerumen) accumulates and drains. It’s a natural process, but it has a tremendous “ick” factor, and Apple may not want to take on a cleaning process or liability for decrusting ear gunk and refurbishing old ‘Pods. (Apple didn’t respond to a request for comment.)

Another reason Apple may not accept your used AirPods could come down to economics. The new AirPods 2 cost $249 (£249, AU$399), so the financial overhead to clean and repair old AirPods and then resell them for a fraction of the price may not make sense for Apple’s bottom line. Demand may just be too low or the process could be too impractical.

Can you sell used AirPods online anywhere else?

We did find other places where you can sell your AirPods online to save up money for the newest AirPods Pro 2, such as Decluttr and BuyBackWorld. Or you can trade your earbuds in to Best Buy or Amazon and receive your money on a gift card. Just don’t expect a huge payout, even for items in good condition.

For instance, the original AirPods Pro in good working condition with all charging components will get you $55 with a trade-in at Best Buy. That’s better than nothing, but it won’t cover even a quarter of the cost of a new set.

If you’re looking to offset the cost to buy the AirPods Pro 2, another option is to pay in monthly installments using an Apple Card, so you’d pay $41.50 per month for six months.

If you typically get a new Android phone every year, your options are to either trade in your old phone or keep it. So if you choose to keep your older Android, what should you do with it? Some options are to stash it in a drawer or try to sell it. But you may like the idea of making it useful — you did spend money on it, after all.

If your phone’s too old to command a high trade-in value, or you’re looking to save some money on a webcam, a Google Home, a wireless mouse, or you just like to tinker, there are some pretty ingenious ways to repurpose your old device and turn it into something you’ll actually want to use.

After all, smartphones are small, powerful computers with storage space and a camera. Your phone makes a handy substitute for lots of other electronics — you can even turn it into a home security camera or diagnose your car’s mechanical problems. Read on for tricks that will give your old Android new life.

Turn your old Android into a webcam

Now is a great time to turn your old phone into a webcam. You can use a number of free apps — including Zoom or Skype — to improve the quality of your video chats during quarantine. Getting started is easy, and we give you all the tips you need for a top-notch setup. Remember, even an older phone’s main camera could still be better than your laptop’s built-in webcam — or no webcam at all.

Convert your old Android into a Nintendo Game Boy

You can play video games everywhere you go when you turn your Android into a Nintendo Game Boy. All you need to get started is a compatible Android phone and a $50 Hyperkin SmartBoy Mobile Device.

In order to play the games, you’ll need to buy Game Boy cartridges (unless you still have them). But you can also play Game Boy Advance apps if you don’t have the retro cartridges.

Store your photos on the old phone

Images take up so much storage space on your device, so store them on your old phone. You can use your new device to take the photos and then send them to your older phone to free up space.

You can also use your old phone as a camera and take it places you normally wouldn’t want to take your new phone. For example, if you go to the lake or beach, you can take photos without worrying as much about dropping your phone in the water.

Use your Android as a universal remote

It’s great having one remote that can do everything — think Click, the Adam Sandler movie. OK, maybe not that extreme. But being able to control all of your devices from one remote is a relief. Download a remote control app, such as iRule, and then sync your phone to devices including your Xbox One, Roku and Apple TV.

If you have smart light bulbs, you can sync your phone to those as well. Follow these tips on how to turn your device into a universal remote so you never have to wonder where your TV remote is hiding again.

Turn your Android phone into a Google Home

Repurposing your Android phone to be a Google Home smart speaker is simple and requires no app downloads. Make sure your phone is updated to the latest Android OS so you have “OK, Google.” Next, you’ll need to find a Bluetooth speaker to pair your phone with. Make sure both devices stay plugged in and on at all times. You’ll be ready to give Google commands in no time. The best part is you won’t have to spend $129 on a Google Home. Learn more about what you can do with a Google Home here.

Your Android can double as a home security camera

Feel secure by turning your old phone into a home security camera. Download a security camera app, like Alfred (also works with an iPhone), to get started. Check on your house while you’re at work to make sure all is well. Place the phone in the main room of the house in a spot where you have the best view.

When you’re home, set it up outside (hidden, of course) to see who’s knocking on your door or to see any suspicious activity. Maybe you’ll find it’s just a raccoon that’s been leaving candy wrappers in your yard and not your neighbor’s kid.

Use your old phone as a baby monitor

Instead of running into your child’s room every time you think you hear crying or a strange noise, check to see if your baby is OK by turning your old phone into a baby monitor.

You can set your old phone up in the room and access it from your current phone by installing Skype on both devices. You can also use a baby monitor app like Dormi. We haven’t tested them on real babies, but the customer ratings are excellent. You’ll feel better knowing that you can be in any room and still see your baby.

Turn your Android into a wireless mouse

It can be annoying when your wireless mouse dies on you with no warning. It helps to have a backup, and you can turn your phone into a mouse in no time. You’ll need to download an app, such as Remote Mouse, in order to do so.

Once you have the app, connect your phone and desktop to the same Wi-Fi network and say bye-bye to that old-school mouse. Keep it in your laptop case for when you’re on the go and stop by a coffee shop to get some work done.

Keep your old phone as a music player

Free up storage space on your new phone by using your old phone as a media player. Since you have a new phone, you can wipe all the data off your old phone (except your music and music apps).

You’ll be able to add as many songs as your old phone will allow without worrying about how much storage you’re using. Hook it up to your surround-sound speaker if you’re having a party and let the fun begin.

The great thing is you’ll be able to leave it in one place and won’t have to worry about incoming calls and messages interrupting your tunes.

Now that you’ve got some cool new ideas for your phone, here’s how to cast and mirror an Android screen to a TV, how to disinfect your device without damaging it and how to use the hidden features on Android 12.

In December, Disney Plus is raising its prices by $3 and adding a new ad-supported tier. That means the new price will be $11 for those who want commercial-free viewing, or $8 for those who don’t mind watching ads. If you’d rather not pay more to keep the same plan you’ve got now, you can cancel your subscription. However, the steps you need to take to end your service depends on how you signed up in the first place.

For most, you’ll need to sign in to your Disney Plus account in a web browser to manage and cancel your subscription, but things are slightly different if you signed up using the phone app.

When you cancel your subscription, you’ll still be able to watch Disney Plus movies and shows until the end of the billing cycle. Here’s what you need to do.

Cancel your subscription in a browser

1. Open disneyplus.com in a browser on your laptop or phone.

2. Log in with your username and password.

3. Select your profile icon.

4. Tap Account.

5. Select your subscription. It will say something like Disney Plus (monthly).

6. Click Cancel Subscription.

7. Select your reason for canceling. For example, it’s too expensive or you watched everything you wanted to.

8. Confirm you want to cancel by selecting Continue to Cancel.

How many items do you tend to lose on a regular basis? Keys, wallets and phones come to mind as commonly misplaced items — and they’re also common things you can put an Apple AirTag on to help keep track of their whereabouts. However, we’ve got several more things you may have not thought of before.

While generally you need to be within Bluetooth range to find your AirTag, you can use Apple’s Find My service to locate it if it’s further away but — and this is important to remember — still in range of another Apple device (here’s how the Find My network works). To do so, just put your AirTag into Lost Mode and you’ll get a notification once it’s within range of the Find My network.

We’ll tell you some unexpected places to put an AirTag to help prevent you from constantly retracing your steps. For more details, here’s how to tell if an AirTag is tracking your location on Android.

See at Apple

In your tent when you go hiking

If you’re setting up camp in a location you’ve never visited, it could be useful to place an AirTag inside your tent so you can easily find your campsite. For instance, if you decide to hike several miles one day, you can use Find My to look up the AirTag’s last location (your tent) and get directions back to the campsite. Remember, it’ll need to be within range of anyone else’s device, so don’t rely on this out in the wilderness. (This is also why Apple advises you not to use AirTags on pets.)

In your jacket pocket

How often have you left your coat behind in a restaurant, bar or friend’s house? Forgetting to grab your jacket when you head out is easy to do, especially if the weather is warmer than you expected or your hands are full of leftovers and to-go cups.

If you know you’ll be hanging your jacket on a coat rack — or the back of a chair — when you arrive, place an AirTag inside the pocket so you know where you left it. This can help prevent yet another favorite jacket from getting lost, and less money out of your wallet to replace it.

Inside your luggage

Airports can be tricky to navigate, and can become especially difficult when you’re trying to find the correct luggage pickup. Sometimes you wait 30 minutes until your bags finally roll out on the conveyor belt — and sometimes they get lost. To relieve the stress of trying to locate your suitcase, you can put an AirTag tracker inside so you can track its whereabouts.

This can help you find out if your bags were left on the airplane, if they’re on the conveyor belt but you haven’t spotted them yet or if someone mistakenly grabbed your luggage. Once you find out where your bags are, you can remedy the situation and continue on to where you’re going.

Inside your laptop bag

Laptop bags can be easily left behind at a cafe when you’re picking up coffee for everyone at the office. When your hands are full and you’re distracted wondering how you’re going to open your car door, it’s hard to remember to grab your bag from the booth you were sitting in.

That’s why it’s a good idea to place an AirTag inside one of the pockets. You will be able to not only locate your expensive laptop but also save any confidential company or personal information you had in your bag.

In a hidden place on your bicycle

If it hasn’t happened to you, you probably know someone who has had this experience. You get home from a bike ride, go inside to grab water and something to eat and completely forget about the bike you left outside. Or maybe you went to the store, didn’t lock your bike up and when you came back it was gone.

If you place an AirTag in a hidden place on the bike, you can easily locate it. We don’t recommend tracking the bicycle down on your own though. It’s best to notify the police and let them retrieve your bike for you to avoid any dangerous situations.

This method also works on your car if it’s been stolen or towed away — or if you can’t remember where you parked it. Although if you have an iPhone and it’s connected to your car via Bluetooth, your phone can locate where you last left it.

More common areas to put your AirTag

AirTag is commonly used to locate these items.

  • Your purse or wallet
  • Your keychain
  • Your phone or tablet
  • The remote to your TV
  • Anything valuable that you leave outside your home

This story is part of Try This, CNET’s collection of simple tips to improve your life, fast.

You probably charge your AirPods or other earbuds every day, but do you clean them regularly, too? Not only can dirt and earwax stick in the crevices of your buds, muffling the sound, but they can harbor bacteria. Repeatedly putting your earbuds in your ears without disinfecting them can transfer the bacteria into your ear canal, which can lead to an infection.

But trying to clean your earbuds the wrong way can damage them, even if they’re waterproof. Don’t worry, though — we’ll show you how to do it the right way.

For more tech hacks, learn how to remove stickers and labels in seconds and the right way to use your can opener

The best ways to clean AirPods and other earbuds

Apple has a few suggestions for cleaning your AirPods. One recommended method is using a disinfecting or alcohol wipe to clean the exterior surfaces — but do not use it on the speaker mesh. If you use any liquids to clean your earbuds, dry them completely before use.

For the microphone and speaker meshes, use a dry cotton swab and a soft-bristled brush to gently wipe away dirt. Don’t press too hard, since you don’t want to push the wax through the mesh. It would be nearly impossible to get it out from there.

Katie Teague/CNET

CNET contributor Matt Elliott suggests using Fun-Tak to remove stubborn leftover earwax. To do so, rub the Fun-Tak together to warm it up and then press it against the speaker. You can then use a wooden toothpick to scrape off anything stuck to the sides of the speaker hollow.

CNET Try ThisCNET Try This

If you want to stick with only Apple products, the giant tech company released its own Polishing Cloth, which costs $19 and has a compatibility list. While AirPods don’t appear to be on the list of products compatible with… a cloth, it could still be useful for hard-core Apple fans wanting to give their earbuds a shine. Otherwise, you might seek out a basic microfiber cloth for external dusting.

How to clean earbuds with removable silicone tips

If you own a set of earbuds with removable silicone tips, like the AirPods Pro or the JBL Reflect Flow Pro, they’re a bit easier to keep clean: The silicone tip helps protect the speaker from earwax and other debris, and they pop off easily.

To clean the tips, remove them from the earphones and soak them in warm, soapy water for 30 minutes. If they’re really dirty, you can agitate the container to loosen up the gunk. Next, use a clean cloth or cotton swab to remove any remaining earwax or dirt and let the silicone tips completely dry.

If you have earbuds that don’t come with silicone tips, you can often buy them separately on Amazon. These $10 ear tips can slip over regular AirPods, for example.

Clean your charging case, too.

It’s important to clean the case your wireless earbuds call home, too.

First, use a soft, dry and lint-free cloth to wipe away any dirt. You can slightly dampen the cloth with water or alcohol, but avoid getting any liquid inside the charging ports.

How not to clean your earbuds

While some earbuds are advertised as waterproof (or water-resistant), we don’t recommend submerging them in water to get them clean– only the removable silicone tips. Stay on the safe side and dampen a microfiber cloth or a cotton swab and gently wipe away the dirt.

We also don’t recommend using a sharp object, such as a safety pin, to clean the speaker or microphone mesh, as it could puncture the speaker. Instead, use a soft-bristled toothbrush or wooden toothpick to gently remove any gunk.
