This story is part of WWDC 2022, CNET’s complete coverage from and about Apple’s annual developers conference.

Airfares in July were more affordable than they were in June, but they’re still sky high compared to July 2021, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Because of that, you might not be traveling to see friends or family any time soon. That doesn’t mean you can’t spend an evening watching a movie or show together, though.

Apple’s iOS 15 upgrade brought many exciting new features to iPhone users — Focus mode, real-time weather alerts, facial recognition to safely store your driver’s license and other IDs in your Apple Wallet. The update also brought SharePlay, a new FaceTime feature that lets iPhone, iPad and Mac users share screens — and streams — with each other for virtual watch parties. SharePlay wasn’t available in the initial iOS 15 release, but it was included in iOS 15.1, which was released in October 2021.

SharePlay is one of FaceTime’s biggest updates, making Apple a big competitor with Zoom and Teleparty (formerly known as Netflix Party). You can use SharePlay to share your screen with your partner to watch movies, listen to songs and more — all while on your FaceTime call. There are a few caveats: Both parties need to have iOS 15.1 or later installed, and both parties must also be subscribed to any streaming services being shared. But overall, SharePlay seems poised to transform video calling and movie watching.

Here’s how to get it set up.

Apple debuts new FaceTime features for iOS 15

2:31

How to use SharePlay to share your screen in FaceTime

Like Zoom, FaceTime will let you share your screen with others on the call using SharePlay, so you can share more than just music and videos. Apple’s suggested use cases include planning a trip together, browsing Zillow with future roommates, showing off a video game or helping a friend with a technical problem by walking them through which settings to change. This feature will also work across Apple devices, which means you can share your Mac screen or your iPhone or iPad screen in a call.

How to stream shows and movies with FaceTime

Having a watch party in FaceTime is simple and intuitive with SharePlay. When you stream movies or TV shows with a friend or significant other, content will sync across devices and allow both parties access to controls. And you’ll still see and hear each other in picture-in-picture as you watch. Streaming services that have already partnered with Apple for SharePlay include Hulu, HBO Max, TikTok and ESPN Plus.

In order to use SharePlay, both parties need to use FaceTime on an Apple device that supports iOS 15.1, iPadOS 15.1 or MacOS Monterey 12.1. Another cool feature of SharePlay is that you can cast to your Apple TV while maintaining the FaceTime call on your iPhone. That way you’re not stuck squinting at a tiny screen with your friend’s face blocking the show.

Shared streaming video can be cast from an iPhone to an Apple TV when using SharePlay in FaceTime.

Apple

Here’s how to set up SharePlay in FaceTime:

1. Start a FaceTime call.

2. Open a streaming app while connected to the call and choose a show or movie.

3. Press Play, and both parties can watch the same stream at once.

How to listen to music with SharePlay

Using SharePlay to listen to a new album with a significant other or friend works similarly to having a watch party. When sharing music, both parties will also have access to controls to pause, play or skip songs in SharePlay. And you can even contribute to shared playlists by adding songs to a queue within Apple Music.

Apple

Here’s how to share music with SharePlay:

1. Start a FaceTime call.

2. Open Apple Music and choose a song.

3. Press Play, and the song will begin playing from both devices at the same time.

Apple

One drawback: SharePlay’s subscription problem

Netflix, Spotify and YouTube are a few of the apps that won’t sync with SharePlay. Apple also notes that a subscription will be required for both parties in order to share streaming services (like HBO Max or Disney Plus) through SharePlay. In our time with iOS 15, we put this to the test and verified that not only do both parties need a subscription to the app being shared (if applicable), but they also need to have the app itself downloaded on both devices.

So if your friend or significant other wants to SharePlay a TikTok video and you don’t have the TikTok app installed, you won’t be able to see the video over FaceTime. And before you get too excited, you also won’t be able to circumvent this by sharing your video stream via screen-share instead of through the app itself.

Correction, Sept. 21: A previous version of this article incorrectly said SharePlay was included with the release of iOS 15. It was available in the beta version of the software.

This story is part of Focal Point iPhone 2022, CNET’s collection of news, tips and advice around Apple’s most popular product.

The iPhone 14 is likely coming really soon. Apple’s “Far Out” launch event is scheduled for 10 a.m. PT today, and we expect to finally get a glimpse at the new iPhone.

After nearly a year of waiting, we’ve heard a slew of rumors about the iPhone 14 lineup, from its possible release date and price to design changes and new camera features. We even got a look at its operating system, iOS 16 — here’s how you can download the beta now (and here’s which iPhones won’t work with iOS 16).

Even with all the buzz about the iPhone 14, Pro, Max and Pro Max, there are plenty of questions still floating around. Will Apple raise the price for its upcoming iPhones? When exactly will you be able to preorder and buy the iPhone 14? How will it be different from the iPhone 13? And what will it even look like

We won’t have definitive answers until Apple’s big announcement, but one thing is certain: Now isn’t the time to buy a new iPhone, especially since Apple’s 2022 flagship is minutes away from its debut. We expect to see the Apple Watch Series 8 and possibly a new Apple Watch SE and Apple Watch Pro soon, too.

iPhone 14 lineup rumors: Will there still be four phones?

We still don’t know much about the iPhone 14, but we’ve heard that Apple’s next lineup will nix the Mini and focus on larger phones instead. A 2021 report from Nikkei Asian Review predicted the death of the iPhone 14 Mini, and a research note from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo obtained by MacRumors also suggested that the Mini was not long for this world. However, Kuo reported, the iPhone 14 lineup will still comprise four models, a “high-end” and a “lower-end,” with two size options for each.

While name speculation isn’t as germane to the discussion of Apple’s 2022 lineup as it was for unlucky 13, rumors suggest a small shift in naming conventions, with an iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max, with “Pro” designating higher-end specs and “Max” referring to the larger screen size.

iPhone 14 size rumors: How large will screens be?

Apple’s last two iPhone lineups have featured the same 6.1-inch size for the base model, going up to 6.7 inches for the Pro Max. According to the same Nikkei Asian Review report, Apple will stick with these sizes for the iPhone 14, but delete the 5.4-inch Mini. This rumor is corroborated by a March report from 9to5Mac. Reports showed sluggish sales of the iPhone 12 Mini, so it’ll be no surprise should Apple retire the small phone in 2022.

Although the size of the next iPhone is expected to stay the same, the display bezels for the Pro Max are rumored to be 20 percent smaller compared to previous iPhone generations, according to CAD renders shared by Twitter leaker ShrimpApplePro. This means the screen would be slightly larger. However, it’s important to note that this rumor should be taken with a grain of salt since ShrimpApplePro doesn’t have an extensive track record to support their speculations.

iPhone 14 rumors: Will there be a SIM card?

In 2020, rumors began to surface that iPhone was ditching physical SIM cards entirely, and now a chain of leaks suggests that the iPhone 14 might be the first line to do it. 9to5Mac broke down the cascade of leaks, which started with a Brazilian site claiming the iPhone 15 Pro would go physically SIM-less. Then MacRumors reported an anonymous tip that Apple was preparing major carriers for eSIM-only phones by September. Apple leaker DylanDKT confirmed being “in agreement” with reports of the tray for physical SIM cards being removed, though his Twitter account has seemingly disappeared since.

Release date: When will the iPhone 14 go on sale?

Apple has set its next launch event for today, Sept. 7 at 10 a.m. PT (1 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. BST). The new iPhone is expected to make its debut at this event, possibly alongside Apple Watch Series 8

Although we now know the probable launch date for the iPhone 14, its release date has yet to be confirmed. But like other aspects of the new iPhone, rumors can provide a few hints. A recent Bloomberg report suggests that the new iPhone will go on sale Sept. 16

Apple holds its annual fall iPhone event in September almost every year, with the phones being released shortly thereafter, usually the Friday of the following week. Sometimes Apple will stagger release dates for specific models, especially when introducing a new design or size. So it’s possible that the iPhone 14 lineup will have more than one release date.

Here’s what we know:

  • Apple tends to hold its events on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Apple’s iPhone 13 event was held on Tuesday, Sept. 14, and this year’s event is slated for today, Wednesday, Sept. 7.
  • iPhone release dates are typically a week and a half after Apple’s announcements.
  • In general, new iPhones are released on a Friday, around the third week of September. For the iPhone 13, preorders began Sept. 17 and the phones went on sale Sept. 24.

A few years ago, CNET took a deep dive into the Apple event timeline and emerged with a compelling Labor Day hypothesis, which you can read about here. Although our hypothesis was a week off for 2021, this year it aligns with the date of Apple’s scheduled launch event.

iPhone 14 price: How much will Apple’s 2022 iPhone cost?

Apple didn’t make any major price changes between 2020’s iPhone 12 and 2021’s iPhone 13. But with bigger changes expected to be on the way for the iPhone 14, it’s reasonable to believe that Apple may raise prices in 2022.

The new iPhone may see a $100 price increase, according to Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives. “Prices have been increasing across the whole supply chain, and Cupertino needs to pass these costs to the consumer on this release,” Ives told The Sun. Kuo also estimates that Apple may increase the price for its new iPhone.

However, other rumors suggest that the iPhone 14 will share the same price as last year’s model, or will be even cheaper. A Korean leaker who goes by the handle yeux1122 suggests Apple plans to “freeze” the price of the base model of the iPhone 14.

For reference, here’s how much each version of the iPhone 13 lineup cost at launch.

iPhone 13 pricing

iPhone 13 Mini $699 $799 $999 N/A
iPhone 13 $799 $899 $1,099 N/A

Camera rumors: A better front-facing camera and more for the iPhone 14?

Apple may have a few camera upgrades in store for the upcoming iPhone 14. Rumors say the tech giant has chosen a new supplier for its front-facing camera to make a higher-end lens. According to a report from Korean tech site ET News, citing unnamed industry sources, South Korean supplier LG Innotek will provide the new selfie camera for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro.

Kuo also shared insights about the iPhone 14’s potential camera upgrades in an investors note reported on by 9to5Mac just after the iPhone 13 launch. In the note, Kuo predicts a hole-punch front camera, making the iPhone 14 notchless, as well as a 48-megapixel wide rear camera for the Pro and Pro Max models, up from 12 megapixels on previous iPhones.

Display analyst Ross Young predicts, however, that the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will have a hole-and-pill-shaped design to accommodate the front-facing camera and Face ID. The hole cutout is believed to be for the Face ID dot projector, and the pill-shaped cutout holds the front camera and Face ID camera, according to a January report from MacRumors. An August report from 9to5Mac also suggests that the high-end iPhone 14 may even sport a singular pill-shaped cutout.

Kuo’s speculation regarding the camera’s megapixel capacity aligns with both a recent research note from Haitong International Securities, also reported on by MacRumors, and a report from research company TrendForce. Both Jeff Pu and TrendForce hypothesize the two Pro models will be equipped with a 48-megapixel wide lens. Pu, however, adds that the iPhones will sport a triple-lens rear camera system with a 12-megapixel ultrawide and telephoto lenses in addition to the 48-megapixel wide lens. The analyst adds that the Pro versions of the iPhone 14 could sport 8GB of RAM, as well. (In comparison, the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max have 6GB.) This is corroborated by a report from a Korean blog that cites domestic supply chain sources, as MacRumors spotted.

iPhone 13 camera upgrades include a new Cinematic modeProRes video and some improvements in zoom capabilities. We had previously reported on rumors that the entire lineup would feature lidar, the iPhone 12 Pro’s standout depth-sensing feature, but lidar ended up making an appearance only on the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max after all. It’s possible Apple might expand the feature to its full lineup in 2022 instead, but we haven’t heard anything yet.

Another of the camera features we’re still waiting on is an improved telephoto lens. While the iPhone 13 Pro’s zoom capabilities were given a 3x optical zoom, it still pales in comparison to a lot of competitor flagships, including Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra, which boasts a 10x optical zoom.

Will iPhone 14 get under-display Touch ID?

The feature that seems to get kicked down the road the most in Apple rumor world is the return of Touch ID. Early rumors supported the Touch ID’s return coming in the iPhone 12, and when that didn’t happen, speculation turned to the iPhone 13. But even before the iPhone 13 launched (sans Touch ID), word on the street had shifted again: iPhone 14 would surely be it. Now, that’s looking less likely, too. In late September last year, Kuo predicted that it won’t be until 2023 that the iPhone regains Touch ID technology. That would be… the iPhone 15?

Design rumors: iPhone 14 might be notchless… or will it?

YouTuber and iPhone leaker Jon Prosser (whose track record is admittedly spotty) made waves the week before the iPhone 13 announcement by releasing renders he commissioned of the iPhone 14 Pro Max based on “real images and schematics” leaked to him from purported sources at Apple.

Prosser’s renders corroborate a number of previously reported rumors, including the notchless display and hole-punch camera previously reported by Kuo, and the iPhone 14 Pro’s titanium alloy chassis, which was first referenced in a 2021 report from JPMorgan Chase. We’d been expecting to see the iPhone 13 go notchless, but instead we got a slimmed-down, but still very notchy, notch. Apple introduced the world to the notched display in 2017 with the release of the iPhone X, and as rivals solved the selfie conundrum with hole-punch and under-display cameras, Apple still hasn’t, er, taken it down a notch.

Read more: iPhone 14 Design Rumors

But Prosser’s renders seem to align with these earlier reports that Apple would finally excise the iPhone’s notch in 2022. And Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also hinted at its removal in a September 2021 edition of his Power On newsletter, wherein he predicted a “complete redesign” for the iPhone 14. While Young says Apple could introduce a hole-and-pill-shaped design for the new iPhone, others suggest a single pill-shaped cutout may be used instead

Those who’ve been crossing their fingers for a notchless iPhone since the iPhone 12 and had their hopes dashed once again by the iPhone 13 can possibly now look forward to a potential realization of their all-screen dreams in 2022’s iPhone 14.

However, before you get too excited, there’s a possibility that not all the iPhone 14 models will get a new notchless design. MySmartPrice published supposed CAD renders of the iPhone 14 in March, depicting — you guessed it — a notch. But renders of the 14 Pro model published the day before on 91Mobiles do show a notchless display. If these rumors prove true, it looks like you’ll have to spring for the Pro in order to get rid of the notch.

iPhone 14 says buh-bye to the camera bump but will it keep the Lightning port?

The other big design change Prosser’s renders show is a flattened camera bump. According to Prosser, the iPhone 14’s body is going to be a “thick boy,” thick enough, it seems, to encompass all the camera hardware without an annoying, protruding camera setup on the back. Why is the iPhone 14 supposed to be so thick? Perhaps to house a bigger battery, or even the previously rumored periscope camera, which Kuo projected in 2020. However, Kuo and famed tech leaker Max Weinbach have actually pointed to a thicker camera bump in the 14 Pro and Pro Max.

Two prior rumors that won’t pan out, according to Prosser at least, are the death of the Lightning port and the addition of USB-C (the EU may force Apple to add USB-C ports to iPhones, however). Rumors of a completely portless iPhone have been circulating for a while, but it appears those won’t come true in 2022.

iPhone 14 color rumors: Pale gold, perhaps?

As far as colors go, Prosser’s render colors were not based on any actual information from his sources, except for a pale gold color, which he claims to have seen evidence of himself. However, like all other rumored specs, we won’t know the true color options for the iPhone 14 until it’s released.

Apple

Rumored iPhone 14 features and specs?

Here’s everything else we know (and think we know) so far about the iPhone 14 lineup’s specifications and potential new features.

An always-on lock screen

Apple’s iOS 16 will include an always-on mode for the lock screen, according to Bloomberg. This feature, however, may be exclusive to the high-end iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Better battery life

Apple’s 2022 iPhone could offer better battery life, according to a report from Taiwan’s Economic Daily News (via MacRumors). This is said to be due to a new 5G chip that could also provide the new iPhone with Wi-Fi 6E connectivity.

A larger battery capacity for each model in the iPhone 14 lineup could also contribute to the better battery life. According to ShrimpApplePro, the standard iPhone 14 may have a 3,279-mAh battery, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max may sport a 4,323-mAh battery.

Wi-Fi 6E adoption

The iPhone 14 could be equipped with Wi-Fi 6E, according to a November note from Kuo, reported on by 9to5Mac. However, the analyst says the components needed for Wi-Fi 6E may be in short supply. Apple’s rumored VR headset is also said to have Wi-Fi 6E

A16 chip

Previous speculation was that the whole iPhone 14 series would upgrade to an A16 chip, improving upon the last iPhone‘s A15 chip in keeping with Apple’s previous pattern. However, Kuo predicted in March that the A16 will only appear in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, while the 14 and 14 Max will keep the A15.

120Hz ProMotion display

All iPhone 14 models could include Apple’s ProMotion display, which only the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max variants currently have. ProMotion boosts the screen’s refresh rate for smoother performance, up to 120Hz. This is more speculation than actual rumor, based on changes in Apple’s supply chain that would make it easier for the company to offer the feature across its next lineup.

Young, however, speculates that Apple will continue to offer ProMotion displays exclusively to its Pro models. The analyst suggests that Chinese manufacturer BOE would be one of Apple’s LTPO OLED display suppliers, but the company doesn’t have a large production capacity right now.

5G connectivity

Apple introduced 5G connectivity to its iPhone 12 lineup and, unsurprisingly, included it in the iPhone 13 as well. There’s no reason to believe we won’t see 5G-compatible iPhone 14s, too. A 2021 report from Nikkei Asian Review also predicts Apple will “go all in on 5G” in 2022.

MagSafe accessories

Like 5G, MagSafe was introduced to the iPhone in 2020’s iPhone 12 lineup. The snap-on, magnetic accessories include wallets, battery packs and chargers, and it was one of our favorite iPhone 12 features. The iPhone 13 is also compatible with MagSafe, and we expect the same for Apple’s next generation of phones.

Satellite connectivity

An 11th-hour iPhone 13 rumor via Kuo that didn’t come to fruition was the addition of satellite connectivity, which would allow users to send text messages via satellite in areas without cellular coverage, at least in emergency situations, as reported by Bloomberg. Alas, satellite connectivity is nowhere to be found in the iPhone 13 lineup, but perhaps that means it’s coming in the iPhone 14 instead.

I spend more time in the Google Chrome browser than ever these days, and my laptop screen is almost always cluttered with dozens of open tabs. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve accidentally hit the “X” on a tab I was just trying to switch over to. It seems to happen on a daily basis. Maybe my mouse speed isn’t properly calibrated. Maybe I’m too click-happy. Or maybe I just know Ctrl+Shift+T has my back. This keyboard shortcut is my secret weapon, and it’s saved me more times than I care to admit.

What is Ctrl+Shift+T (or Cmd+Shift+T for Mac users)? I’d argue it’s one of the most important and useful keyboard shortcuts there is, right up there with Ctrl+Z. In fact, it performs a similar function: undoing a mistake. Specifically, the mistake of accidentally closing a browser tab or window. Ctrl+Shift+T is the easiest way to restore a browser tab you didn’t mean to X out.

Let’s walk through how to use it, plus all the other ways to restore lost tabs in any browser. And don’t miss our list of the best Windows 11 keyboard shortcuts, the essential Mac keyboard shortcuts and a Google Chrome trick that organizes all your tabs for you.

Four ways to reopen closed tabs in Google Chrome

Google Chrome gives you a few options for restoring tabs and windows after you’ve closed them, and depending on your needs, it’s good to know how they all work. Note, however, that restoring closed tabs isn’t an option when browsing in incognito mode.

1. Keyboard shortcut method

The quickest way to restore a single tab you closed by accident is with a keyboard shortcut. On a PC, use Ctrl+Shift+T. On a Mac, use Cmd+Shift+T. If you want to restore multiple tabs, or if you need a tab you closed a while ago, just keep pressing Ctrl+Shift+T and your tabs will reappear in the order in which they were closed. Bonus: If you accidentally close your entire browser window altogether, just open a new Chrome window and the keyboard shortcut will reopen everything at once. This is a great trick for the times when a system update forces you to close your browser or restart your computer altogether.

2. Browser history method

Your Chrome browser history also keeps track of recently closed tabs. It’s not as lightning-fast as a keyboard shortcut, but this method is useful if you closed the tab a long time ago and need to refer back to it.

There are a few ways to access your browser history in Chrome. One way is to use another shortcut: Ctrl+H. Another is to click the hamburger menu in the top right corner of your browser, then select History. And a third option is to type “chrome://history” into your address bar, then press enter.

However you arrive at your browser history, once there you’ll have access to all the websites and tabs you’ve viewed, in reverse chronological order. Clicking on a result will reopen it for you. Going through the hamburger menu also has a built-in list of Recently Closed tabs, which you can select to reopen.

3. Tab search method

Ever noticed the little downward-pointing arrow in your Chrome tab bar? In Windows, it’s right next to the icons for minimizing, maximizing and closing your window. (On Mac it’s at the top right.) This icon is Chrome’s built-in tab search feature, which itself can be accessed with a simple keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+A. Tab search shows you a list of all the tabs you currently have open, and another list of your recently closed tabs. You can scroll through the lists to reopen or switch to the desired tab, or use the search bar to find it with a keyword. This comes in handy for those who keep dozens of tabs open at all times.

4. Taskbar method

If you’ve got a Chrome window opened — or if the app is pinned in your taskbar — right-click the icon from the taskbar and you’ll see a short list of links: Most visited and Recently closed. From there, you can restore a tab just by clicking on it. (Note these options do not appear on Mac.)

Bonus: ‘Continue where I left off’ method

There’s a Chrome setting that essentially makes Ctrl+Shift+T the default. By toggling this feature on, every time you open Chrome, the browser will automatically reopen the tabs you had open in your previous session. To turn it on, go to your Chrome settings (also through the hamburger menu), then On startup. Select the Continue where you left off option.

What about other browsers, like Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Opera?

The Ctrl+Shift+T keyboard shortcut will work in other browsers, too (as well as right-clicking the tab bar and selecting Reopen closed tab). Most of the other methods of reopening a tab work across browsers too, though the menu labels and options may differ. The experience is largely the same on a Mac, with the exception of the taskbar method.

For both Firefox and Microsoft Edge, you can also go through your browser history to find and reopen a tab you accidentally closed. Firefox has a dedicated sub-menu under History called Recently closed tabs. Microsoft Edge has a tabbed History menu for All, Recently closed and Tabs from other devices. In Opera, if you have the sidebar enabled — and if History is one of the elements you’ve elected to include in the sidebar — clicking the History icon from the sidebar will also pull up a list of recently closed tabs.

The other browsers also offer a setting to reopen the previous session’s tabs automatically upon startup. In Firefox, go to Settings > General and check the box under Startup labeled Open previous windows and tabs. In Microsoft Edge, go to Settings > Start, home, and new tabs and under When Edge starts, select open tabs from the previous session. And in Opera: Settings > On startup, then check the box for retain tabs from previous session.

Google’s new phones, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, made their debut on Tuesday at the company’s recent launch event. (Here’s everything Google announced including Pixel Pass, Android 12 and its in-house Tensor chip.) Google’s first Pixel phone made a splash when it was unveiled almost five years ago, but since then, the search giant’s foray into mobile devices has been inconsistent. Last year’s Pixel 5 received high marks for its cameras, but the Pixel 5 lacked the premium features you’d expect from a flagship smartphone, especially for the price. CNET’s Lynn La called it “hard to recommend.” Compared with the original Pixel phone (“pure Android at its absolute best” and “our favorite phone, bar none”), Google’s phone trajectory looked rough.

Now that Google took a larger creative leap with its Pixel line, the question remains whether the changes will help the company compete against the best phones from Apple and Samsung or continue to disappoint its one-time fans. Let’s go over what we’ve learned about the devices, which are available for preorder. Here’s everything you need to know about the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro and which rumors about the phone have been debunked or proven true.

Google’s Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro features detailed

What are Google’s new phones called? The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro

Unlike Apple and Samsung, Google has overall been consistent with its phone nomenclature. The original Pixel was followed by the Pixel 2, then the Pixel 3 and so on. Google’s 2021 phones are indeed called the Pixel 6 and — instead of an XL model — the Pixel 6 Pro.

Google previously announced that both phones would have many of the same features: the new Tensor system-on-chip designed by Google, a camera bar that runs along the back of the phone, camera sensors that take in 150% more light than the Pixel 5’s and an ultrawide lens. Software improvements also hit both models, including Android 12‘s Material You design, along with speech recognition and photography improvements powered by the Tensor.

Rumors about the now-confirmed Pixel 6 Pro began when leaker Jon Prosser shared renders depicting the “Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro” in May. Prosser’s renders were purportedly based on actual images of the phones, but released as renders to protect his source’s identity.

Release date: When will you be able to buy the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro?

Google launched its new phones on Oct. 19, and the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are both available for preorders now through Google’s website

Google has unveiled a new Pixel phone in October every year since 2016, with the exception of last year’s Pixel 5, which was announced on Sept. 30. But 2020 was an exceptional year for many reasons, including phone release schedules.

Read more: Google’s Pixel 6 may be more exciting than the iPhone 13, but how does it compare to older Pixels?

Google’s Pixel release dates usually follow a similarly predictable pattern: The company usually makes its phones available for purchase within a week or two of being announced. The Pixel 6 will be released on Oct. 28, which is in line with these expectations.

Price: How much do the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro cost?

We now know that Google’s Pixel 6 has a starting price of $599, and the Pixel 6 Pro will cost you a bit more with a $899 starting price. In his first look at the Pixel 6, CNET’s Patrick Holland says the phone is “priced to compete with the iPhone 13, the Samsung Galaxy S21 and other midtier Android phones such as the current Motorola Edge.”

In comparison to older Pixel phones the Pixel 6 costs $100 less than the Pixel 5 did at launch. Last year’s Pixel 5 made some compromises to get the launch price down to $699, making it more of a midrange phone than its predecessors, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 4, which both launched at $799.

This means rumors about the Pixel 6’s steeper price tag from leaker Yogesh Brar have been debunked. The tipster previously speculated the Pixel 6 would have a $749 starting price, while the Pixel 6 Pro could have cost between $1,049 and $1,099.

Although the Pixel 6 costs less than its predecessors, Rick Osterloh, senior vice president of Google’s hardware division, described the line as a “premium-priced product” in an August interview with the Verge.

Design and colors: What does Google’s new phone look like?

Confirming Prosser’s renders, the Pixel line has a new look for 2021. The Pixel 6 is available in three colors: Stormy Black, Kinda Coral and Sorta Seafoam. The official Pixel 6 Pro color options are Stormy Black, Cloudy White and Sorta Sunny.

Moving to the front of the phone, the Pixel 6 Pro has a 6.7-inch LTPO OLED (3,120×1,440 pixel) display with a 120Hz refresh rate, while the Pixel 6 will have a 6.4-inch OLED (2,400×1,080) display with a 90Hz refresh rate. A hole-punch-style front-facing camera is centered up top, as opposed to on the left side of the screen as on the Pixel 5, and has 11 megapixels on the Pixel 6 Pro and 8 megapixels on the standard Pixel 6.

Pixel 6 has a Tensor chip, but what can Google’s first in-house processors do?

Google’s reveal of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro put a particular spotlight on Google’s new system-on-chip, named Tensor. Going in-house moves Google away from the Qualcomm chips that have powered its previous devices, and Google says the chip brings with it notable improvements to speech recognition and photography.

“Part of the goal is to show the very best that Google can offer,” Osterloh said in an interview with CNET’s Rich Nieva. “There is a big segment of the market that wants the latest, and we love building technology. So we’re going to try to appeal to that part of the market, too.”

The Tensor chip loads the Pixel with more power and abilities without sacrificing battery life. Thanks to Google’s new in-house chip, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro has features like real-time language translations, highly accurate voice transcription and new camera features like the ability to unblur the face of a person in motion. The new features come as Google promises 24 to 48 hours of battery life for its Pixel 6 line.

The Google Tensor chip’s unveiling is a prominent part of the first look at the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.

Camera specs and features: What’s new on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro?

Along the phone’s camera bar, the Pixel 6 Pro has three cameras: a 50-megapixel wide lens, 12-megapixel ultrawide lens and 48-megapixel telephoto lens. The standard Pixel 6 won’t have the telephoto lens, but houses the 50-megapixel wide and 12-megapixel ultrawide lens.

As for the selfie camera, Google’s new phone has a hole-punch-style front-facing camera with 11 megapixels on the Pixel 6 Pro and 8 megapixels on the standard Pixel 6. The earliest rumors about the Pixel 6’s camera setup included speculation that Google might upgrade to an under-display selfie camera, but that’s not on the Pixel 6. Since this rumor is based on a patent filed by Google that appeared not to have a visible front camera, however, it’s possible another phone will include it. Perhaps the Pixel 7?

Google also designed the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro’s cameras to be more accurate no matter your complexion with Real Tone. The feature comes after the company announced improvements to its software for “a more accurate and inclusive camera” that works better for a variety of skin tones, in May.

Google’s new Pixel phones also see other photography improvements thanks to the Tensor chip. A new feature called Face Unblur can put the face of a moving subject in focus, while keeping the blur around the rest of the body, and another camera feature called Motion Mode can add blur into still pictures.

Do Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro support 5G?

It’s complicated. The Pixel 6 supports sub-6 5G. Some carrier versions of the Pixel 6 will also support mmWave, which is the fast version of 5G that’s not widely available.

Read more: Will Google’s Pixel 6 and 6 Pro work with 5G? The answer is complicated

What’s in the box: Google’s Pixel 6 won’t ship with a charger

Google’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro won’t ship with a charger in the box. The tech giant previously shared that tidbit about the new phone alongside the reveal of the Pixel 5A. Instead, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will ship with a USB-C to USB-C cable and a Quick Switch Adapter.

Google’s decision to ditch the accessory from its phone boxes follows both Apple and Samsung. Apple stopped including an AC adapter in the box of the iPhone 12 in 2020, and Samsung later did the same for the Galaxy S21

Although Google’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro won’t have a charger in the box, the new phone supports 30-watt fast charging. This debunks earlier rumors about the smartphone from tipster Yogesh Brar and Android Police, which said that the Pixel 6 would support 33-watt and 23-watt fast charging, respectively.

Google also released a new Pixel Stand for the Pixel 6. The stand is said to be an alternative to wired charging, and was leaked before the phone’s launch by tipster Evan Blass.

Do the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro have an under display fingerprint sensor?

The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro both have an under-display fingerprint reader. The feature was previously leaked by Android Senior Vice President Hiroshi Lockheimer, who shared two screenshots on Twitter showing an embedded fingerprint sensor within the Pixel’s display. The tweet, which was originally posted to show off Android’s new Material You design, has since been deleted from Lockheimer’s account. Screenshots of the tweet were then later posted by leaker Mishaal Rahman.

Pixel Pass: What is Google’s new subscription service?

The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro launched alongside a new subscription option to bundle phone financing and services under one bill. The plan is called Pixel Pass, and is described as a “monthly subscription that addresses users’ mobile needs end-to-end.” The subscription bundles Pixel device financing, YouTube Premium, Google One storage, Play Pass, Google Fi, Google’s preferred care and device protection.

It was only a matter of time before the great algorithm in the sky brought millennial pink and iPhone buzz together in capitalist matrimony. The iPhone 13 lineup is finally here. After Apple’s virtual announcement event, which saw not only the iPhone 13, 13 Mini, 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max but also the Apple Watch 7 and new iPads, the internet is abuzz with excitement over the phones’ expanded storage options (up to 1TB!), extra battery life, camera upgrades and more. But what I’m most excited about are the new colors — specifically, the pink iPhone 13 of the collective internet’s dreams.

This fan art render of a pink iPhone 13 was posted on Instagram before going viral on Twitter.

@aliartist3d

Murmurs about a bubblegum pink iPhone 13 all started with an Instagram post. Artist and Instagrammer Ali Sayed Ali, who specializes in 3D models and renders (mostly of iPhones), posted a photo back in February showing a very ~aesthetic~ pink iPhone surrounded by what appears to be other pink Apple accessories (AirPodsAirPods Max and an iPhone case). “Should we start seeing these colors more often?” the caption said.

Review: The iPhone 13 and 13 Mini check all the boxes

Then on May 5, a Twitter account called Peng Phones created a frenzy when it tweeted the same photo without sourcing, referring to it as a “Rose Pink” iPhone 13 Pro Max render and teasing a December 2021 release date for the color option. (Subsequent tweets from the same account also mention November 2021 releases for “Pink,” “Rose Pink” and even “Rosegold Pink” iPhones.) The tweet netted over 40,000 likes and more than 30,000 retweets, causing searches for “pink iPhone 13” to spike. The photo has since been removed from the tweet for copyright violation.

Much of the Twitter reaction was of the skeptical variety:

what sick sick person edited a pink iphone and made it go viral like apple was actually selling it

— sweet thang (✧ω✧) (@s0fthunny) May 7, 2021

But still, many Twitter responses expressed hope (or at least a capitulation to capitalism that one could interpret as buying intent): “Capitalism is bad but the pink iphone is so sexy,” one person tweeted. Another just tweeted “manifesting” between two candle emoji with an image of not only a pink iPhone 13, but a pink Nintendo Switch, too.

@itsleighchan

This rumor was definitely more of an iPhone wish list item since the original creator of the image says she created it just for fun. But that didn’t stop us (and the aesthetic devotees of social media) from wondering about its plausibility anyway. Could Apple actually make the pink iPhone happen? Turns out, yes. The veracity of the alleged release dates (here’s the official iPhone 13 release date) and color names tweeted by Peng Phones was pretty hard to vouch for, not having originated or been corroborated by notable leakers with solid Apple-leak track records, and especially because the photo in the tweet was merely fan art. But what the Twitter account got right was the fact that Apple would announce different colors for its iPhone 13 and 13 Mini phones compared to the 13 Pro and Pro Max. This is not much of a surprise, because Apple varied the colors similarly in its iPhone 12 lineup last year.

The odds of a pink iPhone 13 coming out in 2021? They weren’t terrible. First, this wouldn’t have been the first time Apple released a pink iPhone. The iPhone 5C, released in 2013, was available in pink. 2018’s iPhone XR came in coral, and the iPhone 6S from 2015 was sold in rose gold. Pink has been a popular color for tech ever since. Just this past February, Samsung also released phantom pink and phantom violet models of its flagship Galaxy S21, with a more metallic sheen than the iPhone 13 render.

And Apple released a new purple color option for the iPhone 12 in the spring, another bone thrown to the aesthetic crowd. In fact, Apple also unveiled a redesigned iMac at its April event available in a variety of throwback hues to match the company’s rainbow logo of yore. One of those iMac colors is, you guessed it, pink.

Apple does usually swap out one iPhone color from generation to generation, leaving the rest consistent. So it was always possible that a candy-colored pop of pink could oust the iPhone 12’s deep blue or mint green.

While Apple certainly delivered on our pleas for a pink iPhone 13 (the name of the color is literally just “pink”), the hue is not quite as bold as the original Instagram render. Would I call it bubblegum pink? Based on Apple’s marketing images, no way. CNET’s Patrick Holland says the pink is so pale it looks almost white in certain lighting. But millennial pink? Maybe. Still, no one can argue that their pink iPhone manifestations didn’t technically come true, even if the fan art looks a lot prettier. But if you’re still disappointed by the muted pastel shade, you can always just buy a pink phone case.

Samsung’s current flagship lineup, the Galaxy S21, has been out for more than six months now. Since the unveiling of the Galaxy S21, S21 Plus and S21 Ultra, Samsung has also released two new foldable devices, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3, and rumor has it the phone giant is also gearing up for the Galaxy S22 and the Galaxy S21 FE, a sequel to last year’s popular lower-priced handset, the Galaxy S20 FE. Phew. With all these buzzy new phones being released, your best bet might actually be to buy one of Samsung’s older models, especially if there are deals to be had. (The Galaxy S20 is also still worthy of consideration.) And if you’re interested in the Galaxy S21, chances are you’re very confused about the main differences between the three versions.

Read more: Galaxy S22 vs. Galaxy S21, based on rumors

As the names suggest, each model in the Galaxy S21 lineup is slightly upgraded (and slightly pricier) than the one before it, resulting in a spectrum of specs to meet just about any Android user’s needs. But how do you decide whether you’re a baseline kind of person or if you should go directly to the top of the line? Sure, your budget can make the decision for you, but price doesn’t tell the whole story and, depending on your needs, a higher-priced phone might also be the best value.

Samsung announced the Galaxy S21, S21 Plus and S21 Ultra in January.

Sarah Tew/CNET

The most obvious differences among Samsung’s Galaxy S21 line, besides the price, are screen size, battery capacity and camera capabilities. Going up the line, each phone increases in size. If you’re small-handed, you might hate the heft of the Ultra. But if you’re going to be watching a lot of videos, bigger is probably better.

  • Galaxy S21: 6.2 inches
  • Galaxy S21 Plus: 6.7 inches
  • Galaxy S21 Ultra: 6.8 inches

Battery capacity also increases as you move up the line, though we don’t think you’ll have any trouble getting through the day on a charge even with the baseline S21 phone.

  • Galaxy S21: 4,000 mAh
  • Galaxy S21 Plus: 4,800 mAh
  • Galaxy S21 Ultra: 5,000 mAh

Read more: How the new Galaxy A series compares to Samsung’s other phones: S21 and S20 FE

Camera geeks are probably going to want to upgrade to the S21 Ultra. You can tell just by looking at the three phones that the S21 Ultra has some extra camera tricks up its sleeve, evidenced by its extra-large quadruple camera module, which also houses its flash. The S21 Ultra gets Space Zoom, an extra telephoto camera and a 108-megapixel wide-angle lens — we’re particularly impressed with S21 Ultra’s zoom.

A few other things to consider: You want a pretty pink phone? Then you’ll have to get the S21. Want S Pen support? Only the S21 Ultra has that (and the new Galaxy Z Fold 3). Ditto for storage greater than 256GB: Only the Ultra goes up to 512GB (that model gives you more RAM too), and none of the Galaxy S21 phones accommodates expandable storage. The S21 Plus and Ultra both feature a Gorilla Glass Victus backing, which lends durability that the plastic-backed S21 won’t have.

Review: The Galaxy S21 5G surprised us with its changes

Drew Evans/CNET

Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus

The phone has a clean look thanks to the two-tone approach, and it has Full HD resolution, which CNET’s Patrick Holland describes as “a step down from the Quad HD quality on the S20” in his review. The adjustable screen refresh rate, which is good for games and good for your battery life when it’s not in use, is also a plus.

The S21 Ultra is a significant hardware and software upgrade over the S20 Ultra. That’s why the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra received the Editors’ Choice Award from CNET. The addition of S-Pen support (it’s the first Galaxy S phone to do so) will also get be of some use for Galaxy Note owners searching for a new phone.

Let’s say you already know you want an iPhone, specifically the Pro version, and let’s say you’re not interested in waiting around for the iPhone 13. (Apple’s next flagship lineup should be here very soon, and it’s starting to look very cool but once we find out the price, Apple’s previous lineups will likely go on sale.) For those who have their eye on a Pro or Pro Max, the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 are still two great options.

Read more: Is it still worth it to buy an iPhone 12? How about an iPhone 11?

Or maybe you already have an iPhone 11 Pro or 11 Pro Max and are trying to decide whether to trade it in for something from Apple’s iPhone 12 lineup. The iPhone 12 Pro starts at $999, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max starts at a cool $1,099. Apple discontinued the 11 Pro and Pro Max when the iPhone 12 line was announced, but you can still find the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max at a discount at various retailers, sometimes as low as $625.

For reference, here are CNET’s reviews of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max. And here’s how the iPhone 12 compares to the iPhone 11

Trading in to Apple will bring the price of an iPhone 12 down considerably — as much as $500 in savings for an 11 Pro trade-in, or $540 for a Pro Max — but then again, keeping your old phone for another year is free. Apple made several improvements to its iPhone 12 lineup, (most notably adding 5G — oh, and it also comes in purple) but are the phone’s newer tricks worth the cash? The answer depends on what’s important to you. Let’s compare Apple’s 2019 and 2020 Pro flagships on design, camera, performance and more.

iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max

Better for your budget

In 2019, we gave the iPhone 11 the coveted Editors’ Choice Award and called the Pro version “simply the best iPhone ever.” That designation was challenged with the release of the iPhone 12, but the fact remains that Apple’s previous year’s flagship is still an excellent phone, with a high-resolution OLED display, three-camera array (with Deep Fusion technology) and a sleek matte-glass finish.

Treat yourself with the best iPhones

Major camera improvements, an A14 Bionic chip, ceramic shield screen and a fancy redesign make the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max the ideal phone if money is no object. It also has 5G connectivity, which is the one thing everyone’s talking about. The jury’s still out on how useful 5G will be in the iPhone 12, but it does future-proof the phone — and FOMO-proof it, too.

Design

The most obvious aesthetic difference between the iPhone 11 Pro/Pro Max and the iPhone 12 Pro/Pro Max is the latter’s flattened sides. Apple brought back the squared-off edges look from the iPhone 5 and wrapped the iPhone 12 Pro line in a modern stainless steel frame.

Size

Compared with 2019’s flagship, the iPhone 12 lineup features slimmer bezels that accommodate a larger screen without greatly increasing the phone’s overall size and weight. The 11 Pro’s 5.8-inch screen becomes 6.1 inches in the iPhone 12 Pro. And the iPhone 11 Pro Max’s 6.5-inch screen is now 6.7 inches in the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Ceramic shield vs. Gorilla Glass

Another notable difference is the screen glass. Apple unveiled its new “ceramic shield” technology with the iPhone 12 lineup, which it says gives the phone a 4x better drop performance than the Gorilla Glass screen on iPhone 11. We haven’t conducted drop or scratch tests for the iPhone 12 Pro or Pro Max, but we put ceramic shield to the test on the baseline iPhone 12 and also drop-tested the iPhone 12 Mini, and it seems virtually indestructible. The iPhone 11 Pro fared incredibly well in our drop testing, though we did find some damaged pixels on its screen.

Colors

If these drop test results have convinced you to forgo a phone case, phone colors are probably going to play at least a small role in your decision. Apple introduced some new colors with the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max (including a super-shiny, C-3PO-style gold hue), giving the phones a premium look.

Apple

5G, processor, battery and performance

The iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max come with Apple’s A14 Bionic chip, which is a successor to the iPhone 11’s A13 processor. All four phones, the iPhone 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, feature a 60Hz display.

5G

No discussion of the iPhone 12 is complete without a mention of 5G. If your area has 5G coverage and your carrier offers it, the iPhone 12 is capable of delivering much higher speeds than the iPhone 11, which lacks 5G capability. However, your mileage with the next generation cellular connectivity may vary, especially as coverage continues to roll out. The results of our 5G speed tests with the iPhone 12 were not exactly earth shattering. Right now, 5G connectivity is probably not a compelling reason to trade in an iPhone 11 Pro for a 12 Pro, but if you’re choosing between the two phones, the latter will be more future-proofed.

Our in-depth review of the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro

13:48

Battery

Apple doesn’t release battery specs, but it says the iPhone 11 Pro’s battery will last up to 18 hours, compared with 17 hours for the iPhone 12 Pro. Apple says the iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone 12 Pro Max batteries will both last for up to 20 hours. One hour of potential difference is not significant enough to sway your decision, but it’s worth noting that 5G usage does tend to drain phone batteries. To combat this, Apple introduced with the iPhone 12 lineup a feature called Smart Data Mode, which toggles between 5G and 4G, or even between different bands of 5G, balancing performance with battery life.

Cameras

In the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max, Apple introduced both hardware and software upgrades to its camera setup. CNET’s Patrick Holland calls it “the best overall camera system you can find.” One new feature, visible in the camera array on the back of the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max, is a sensor technology called lidar. Lidar, which stands for light detection and ranging, uses lasers to assess depth, improving portrait mode effects and low-light focus.

Another camera feature that made pro photographers excited about the iPhone 12 Pro is what Apple calls ProRaw, which combines Apple’s computational photography abilities with a raw image format, giving photo geeks the best of both worlds. Here’s everything you need to know about ProRaw, and here’s our ProRaw review after trying it out.

Apple gave the iPhone 12 Pro the same ultrawide camera as the iPhone 11 Pro — a camera we loved when we reviewed it in 2019. Apple improved upon an already-great camera with software enhancements in the iPhone 12 to correct lens distortion. Check out the way the iPhone 12 Pro corrects the lines of this brick wall image taken by CNET’s Patrick Holland.

Software also makes the iPhone 12 Pro’s low-light Night Mode photography even better — CNET’s James Martin called the iPhone 12 Pro’s Night Mode images “nothing short of amazing.” Apple added Night Mode to the iPhone 12 Pro’s selfie and ultrawide cameras, whereas Night Mode on the iPhone 11 Pro only functions on the standard wide lens. Night Mode portraits on the iPhone 12 Pro are now also a thing. As far as hardware goes, iPhone 12 Pro’s wide lens has been upgraded from an f/1.8 to a wider f/1.6 aperture, improving its low-light capabilities by 27%, according to Apple.

James Martin/CNET

There’s a lot more to explore when it comes to the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max’s cameras, but suffice it to say that amateur and pro photographers alike are very excited about them. But the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max inspired similar enthusiasm. If the camera is the most important factor in your phone-buying decision, read more on the iPhone 11 Pro and 12 Pro’s individual camera specs to see what these phones can do:

What’s the same?

Both the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro charge wirelessly and by Lightning port (and the 11 comes with a charger in the box, unlike the 12). The iPhone 12 lineup also works with Apple’s new MagSafe chargers. Neither flagship supports reverse wireless charging — though the iPhone 12 might secretly have the ability to charge a future Apple accessory, likely a new version of AirPods. In lieu of a Touch ID button, both phones feature Face ID technology for unlocking your screen. Neither model allows for expandable storage but the iPhone 12 Pro line starts at 128GB compared with the iPhone 11 Pro’s 64GB.

If the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max continue to go on sale at third-party vendors, your decision will likely come down to whether saving that money is worth the now-outshined cameras and lack of 5G connectivity. If money is a concern, the iPhone SE is another great option, currently priced at $399 unlocked (there could be an iPhone SE 3 coming, too). And there’s always the regular iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini, or the previous year’s iPhone 11, any of which you can get starting at $800 or less.

Google and Apple both released a 5G phone in 2020: the long-awaited iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max and the Pixel 5, which Google unveiled alongside the Pixel 4A 5G. The two biggest differences between the iPhone 12 and Pixel 5 are the price and the operating system.

Pricewise, this isn’t a very fair fight. While the $699 Pixel 5 (£599, AU$999) is Google’s current flagship, it lacks many of the premium features we’ve come to expect from brands like Samsung and Apple. (Here’s how the Pixel 5 compares to a similarly priced iPhone 11 instead.) The iPhone 12 price structure is a bit more complicated, because Apple released four models and prices vary between unlocked and carrier models. The base iPhone 12 model starts at $799 (£799 and AU$1,349) with carrier discounts, and that $100 price difference to the Pixel 5 is nothing to sniff at, especially as belts tighten during the coronavirus pandemic.

iPhone 12 vs. Pixel 5 camera comparison

As far as the operating system goes, those who are plugged in to Apple’s iOS ecosystem are unlikely to even look twice at a Google phone. And the same goes for Android users. But if you’re looking to make a switch from iPhone to Android or from Android to iOS, or if you just like to rubber-neck at phone showdowns, read on as we compare the iPhone 12 and Pixel 5’s design, camera, battery and performance.

Apple iPhone 12

One of our highest rated phones… ever

With 5G support, a sleek new look, major camera upgrades, a ceramic shield screen and an overall zippy performance, Apple’s newest flagship is a force to be reckoned with. CNET’s Patrick Holland called the phone “a complete unit” and praised its “slabular beauty” — reminiscent of the iPhone 5 design. Not only did the 12 score higher on performance benchmark tests than any other phone we’ve ever tested, but it’s also one of our highest rated phones of all time. Too bad it doesn’t come with headphones and a power adapter.

Google Pixel 5

The economical 5G flagship

We called the Pixel 3 “the best Android phone of 2018,” but our impression of the following year’s Pixel 4 and now the Pixel 5 were very similar: cool camera, but not for that price. Still, Google devotees will appreciate the bevy of goodies included in the latest Pixel, like a 90Hz display, a larger battery and some neat computational photography tricks. And if you want 5G for $100 less, the Pixel 5 has you covered.

Design

The iPhone 12 made a splash with its throwback design. Apple brought back the flat, squared-off edges, which differentiate the iPhone 12 from rivals that favor curved sides. The new flagship also comes in new blue hues, dark blue for the iPhone 12 and Pacific blue for the 12 Pro. The Pixel 5 has a more minimalist design, with a hole-punch camera, thin bezels and a flush rear camera setup.

One area where the Pixel 5 beats the iPhone 12, at least on paper, is its 90Hz screen refresh rate. Apple’s flagship has a 60Hz display. Having a 90Hz display means the screen refreshes 90 frames a second, making scrolling smoother. Keep in mind that the Pixel 5’s refresh rate is dynamic, much like many other 90 or 120Hz phones. The phone will revert to 60Hz when the higher refresh rate is not needed, such as when the screen is static, to help save battery.

The iPhone 12 and Pixel 5 are nearly identical in size. The iPhone 12 is slightly larger, with a 6.1-inch screen compared to the Pixel 5’s 6-inch display. The iPhone 12 is also heavier at 5.78 ounces to the Pixel 5’s 5.33 ounces. But because the iPhone 12 comes in four variants and three sizes, small- or big-handed people will surely find an iPhone that fits. The iPhone 12 Mini features a 5.4-inch display, and the Pro Max is a whopping 6.7 inches. You can compare all the dimensions and other specs between Apple’s four iPhone 12 models here.

Camera

As a trailblazer in computational photography, Google’s phone cameras really shine in their software. But as competitors like Apple have improved their software offerings, Google’s hardware has failed to keep up. The Pixel 5’s camera setup is still pretty terrific though and it has some exciting new tricks up its sleeve, like the marriage of Night Sight and Portrait Mode for blurred-background shots in low lighting. Other upgrades to the Pixel 5’s camera include a new editing mode for light and portrait photos, and an ultrawide camera for landscape and group shots.

But the iPhone 12 caters to the higher-end needs of even pro photographers. Apple already added an ultrawide lens on 2019’s iPhone 11, and the 12 Pro includes both the ultrawide angle and a telephoto camera (plus lidar!). Meanwhile, Apple tackled the low-light problem with hardware upgrades — a new lens with an aperture of f1.6 and a new larger sensor, which Apple says offers 27% improvement in low-light situations. Apple also added Night Mode to both its ultrawide and selfie cameras.

Processor, battery and performance

The iPhone 12 is equipped with Apple’s Bionic 14 processor, while the Pixel 5 has the Snapdragon 765G chipset from Qualcomm. The Pixel 5’s processor is actually slower than the Pixel 4‘s Snapdragon 855, but Google said it went with this chipset as an effort to keep costs down. We didn’t notice any slow down, but our Pixel 5 benchmark tests did yield lower scores than the iPhone 11.

The Pixel 5 boasts a 4,000-mAh battery, the highest capacity of any of the Pixel phones. While Apple doesn’t release battery specs, a recent teardown video showed a 2,815-mAh battery capacity. In CNET’s testing of continuous video playback on airplane mode, the Pixel 5 lasted 21 hours, 43 minutes, while the iPhone 12 clocked in at only 17 hours, 14 minutes.

Because 5G connectivity can be a major battery drain, both Google and Apple have introduced some unique solutions to the battery life problem. In addition to throttling between 60Hz and 90Hz refresh rates, the Pixel 5 features an extreme battery saver mode that will severely limit app usage to extend battery life. The iPhone 12 introduces a feature called Smart Data mode, which will similarly throttle 5G (down to 4G, or between different bands of 5G) in order to balance performance with battery.

Both phones offer wireless charging (though only the iPhone 12 lineup has a cool new MagSafe charger option), but only the Pixel 5 includes reverse charging, meaning it can charge other phones and accessories.

This story is part of CES, where CNET covers the latest news on the most incredible tech coming soon.

Samsung’s Galaxy S21, the follow-up to last year’s Galaxy S20, has arrived earlier than the company’s flagship phones usually do. (Here are CNET’s Galaxy S21 review and Galaxy S21 Ultra review.) Samsung hosted a virtual Unpacked event earlier this month in which the latest Galaxy S smartphone was unveiled, about a month earlier than last year’s announcement. And today the Galaxy S21 line officially hits shelves. Here’s how to buy one.

Rumors had been circulating for months about the new device, fueled by leaks galore. Would the Galaxy S21 come with a stylus? Would it sport a sleek new design? Would it replace the Galaxy Note line

And the perennial question: Would it include a headphone jack? We now know the answer: No, the Galaxy S21 does not have a headphone jack.

Our first look at the new Galaxy S21 and S21 Plus

We guessed as much ahead of the Unpacked event, based on leaks. But if we learned anything in the time since Samsung released its last Galaxy S flagship (the very same day the coronavirus disease was officially christened COVID-19), it’s that anything is possible.

Leaked teasers for the Galaxy S21 showed a similar design to the S20 lineup, with an in-screen fingerprint reader and a centered hole-punch front camera. But one thing we didn’t see in the leaked images is a headphone jack, which told us it was probably not in the cards for the S21. More recent leaks showing Samsung’s specs for all three models of the S21 also did not include mention of a headphone jack.

There had been some unsubstantiated conjecture about Samsung reintroducing the headphone jack as a sort of experiment in 2021. The thinking here is that a headphone jack could be enough to differentiate the Galaxy flagship from other premium phones from the likes of Apple and Google, which have also forced users to convert to either the wireless earbud or dongle lifestyle in recent years.

It was an interesting theory, especially if you remember Samsung’s initial reaction to Apple’s original removal of the headphone jack from its 2016 handset, the iPhone 7. Apple’s move became a punchline at Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 launch event that same year. And ads for the Galaxy Note 8 went a step further, mocking the iPhone’s unwieldy dongle setup. But the tide changed and, when Samsung unveiled its Galaxy Note 10 in 2019, it, too, left the headphone jack on the cutting room floor. Last year’s Galaxy S20 also lacked a headphone jack, the first of the Galaxy S line to nix it.

History repeated itself with the Galaxy S21. When Apple decided not to include a charger or earphones in the box with its iPhone 12, Samsung mocked that decision as well. But now Samsung followed suit and also nixed them. A leak from tipster Evan Blass the day before Galaxy Unpacked also showed a “what’s in the box” page from Samsung that only listed a USB-C cable (sans charging brick), ejection pin and Quick Start Guide, citing environmental reasons. And not including headphones in the box was yet another piece of evidence against the inclusion of a corresponding headphone jack.

One reason phone makers love to lose the jack: thinner bezels. Thin is in, and a smaller bezel footprint allows for a larger screen without adding to the phone’s overall size.

Samsung

Another, perhaps more cynical reason: The company’s own wireless earbuds ought to sell better when its phones lack a wired headphone jack. Apple’s AirPods have sold like gangbusters, likely thanks in no small part to the iPhone’s excised jack. And Samsung’s got its own line of wireless earbuds, the Galaxy Buds, Galaxy Buds Plus and Galaxy Buds Live, and now, there are the Galaxy Buds Pro, too. So it makes a lot of sense for Samsung to stick to its decision to bid the headphone jack adieu.
