With spring approaching, you’re probably buying things online more than ever. But whether you’re looking for a gift or just nabbing some household basics, how do you know if you’re actually getting the best price? That’s where CNET Shopping comes in. This browser extension was formerly known as PriceBlink, and it recently became a part of the CNET family. Once installed, it rides along when you’re shopping at many of your favorite online retailers — Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy and Target, to name a few — where it’ll make sure you’re getting the best deal (among the stores we cover).

Install CNET Shopping

It has three main features — here’s how it works.

Three ways to save

When you install the CNET Shopping extension, you’ll unlock three ways to save money while you shop online.

price-comparo.png

Screenshot by CNET

Price comparison: Once you’ve installed the extension, point you browser to a product page at any major online retailer — Amazon, Target, Walmart and the like — and CNET Shopping will instantly search the web for better offers. While it’s not foolproof, it generally provides an excellent snapshot of competing prices among the web’s top stores. You’ll know right away whether you’re getting the best price, or be able to jump to a more affordable competitor.

Coupon finder: Did you know you may be losing out on free discounts when you buy online? With CNET Shopping installed, you’ll immediately be made aware of the relevant coupon codes available on the site where you’re shopping — including a checkout scan to verify any possible final deals.

Price tracking: Looking to buy something, but waiting for it to go on sale? With CNET Shopping’s price tracker, you can do just that. On some products at supported retailers, you’ll see an “Add Price Alert” button (as shown below) that will add that product to your personal tracking list. If and when it hits a discount percentage you specify, you’ll be notified so you can pounce on the sale.

How to install

Just click here (or on the button below) to install the CNET Shopping extension. It’s completely free, and it works with all major desktop web browsers, including Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge. Installation is quick and easy — and you can always uninstall it from your browser’s settings menu, should you choose. You can find the CNET Shopping privacy policy here.

Tablets are great handheld tools for those who don’t want a cumbersome laptop, but need a screen that’s larger than a traditional smartphone. There are many tablets to choose from, but some stand out more than others. Apple’s iPad typically dominates the tablet market, so it’s understandable that a lot of folks will be on the lookout for an iPad deal. That being said, there are reasons why you might choose an Android tablet or a Windows tablet instead. Whether you’re all in on Apple gear or you want a tablet that offers a similar experience to your non-Apple phone, we’ve got tablet deals for you. And don’t forget about Amazon Fire tablets, which are great value for money, or Windows tablets, which are good for bridging the divide between work and home.

Best tablet deals right now

Ready to stretch your tablet-buying dollar? Discounts on iPads are usually few and far between, but you can save $50 on the latest 10.2-inch iPad and $40 on the current 10.9-inch iPad Air at Amazon. You can save $20 on Amazon’s Fire HD 10 tablet, and a couple of Android tablets from Samsung are also on sale at Amazon, along with Microsoft’s Surface Pro tablet-laptop hybrids.

10.2-inch iPad (9th gen): $279

Save $50

Apple’s most affordable tablet, the 10.2-inch iPad, didn’t receive a design overhaul like its Mini cousin last fall, but it does serve up a faster processor, a better front-facing camera and a better display than the eighth-gen iPad. The biggest addition is the storage, which was doubled to 64GB on the base model and 256GB on the step-up model. Other than that, the change you’ll most likely welcome in this age of FaceTime and Zoom calls is the front camera going from 1.2 megapixels to a wider-angle 12 megapixels. The iPad also added Center Stage to keep your mug in the frame during video calls. It’s $50 off at Amazon and $30 off at Walmart — that’s the biggest discount we’ve seen yet for it. Read our ninth-gen iPad review.

10.9-inch iPad Air (5th gen): $559

Save $40

You can save $40 on Apple’s latest iPad Air right now. It costs $599 from the Apple Store and features Apple’s M1 chip, found in the company’s iPad Pros, along with 5G and a wider-angle, front-facing camera with the Center Stage autofocusing video feature. CNET’s iPad expert Scott Stein still recommends the less expensive 10.2-inch iPad for most people, but sees this iPad Air as a solid step up. You can save $40 at Amazon and other retailers on the 64GB baseline model. Read our iPad Air 2022 review.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE: $430

Save $100

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE is a midlevel Android tablet that occupies the space between a basic iPad and an iPad Pro. The baseline Galaxy Tab S7 FE (short for Fan Edition) with 64GB of storage is discounted by $100 right now at Amazon and Best Buy. The tablet features a roomy 12.4-inch display and includes Samsung’s S Pen stylus for drawing and jotting down notes.

Amazon Fire HD 10: $130

Save $20

Amazon’s Fire HD 10 is the biggest and most powerful tablet that the company offers. It features a 10.1-inch, FHD display and comes packed with benefits for Prime subscribers, making it easy for members to stream and download movies, TV shows and games. The Fire tablets don’t run on a pure version of Android: Instead, they use Amazon’s Android-based Fire operating system, pulling apps from the Amazon App Store. You can still get apps from Google Play, even though you’ll have to install the store yourself — meaning gaming enthusiasts have access to all of their favorite mobile games for an excellent gaming tablet experience. It’s $30 off right now, and you can also save $20 on the Fire HD 10 Plus, which offers a bit more RAM and wireless charging.

Microsoft Surface Pro 8: $900

Microsoft released the latest version of its flagship two-in-one tablet when it launched Windows 11 in late 2021. It boasts a 13-inch display that’s larger than the Surface Pro 7’s and a slimmer pen while adding a pair of Thunderbolt 4 ports. Inside, this model features an 11th-gen Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. The list price for this model is $1,240, but the price has dropped by $340 at Amazon and it includes the snap-on keyboard.

Who needs a standalone MP3 player in 2022? In my opinion, the answer is “almost no one.” Any iPhone or Android phone is an audio player that works with subscription music apps like Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Amazon Music or YouTube Music. You pay your $5 to $10 a month, and you get access to nearly every popular song ever recorded. And the tracks are downloadable, too, so you can listen to your music even when you leave a Wi-Fi or cellular coverage area. It’s quick, easy and convenient. What’s not to like?

“A lot,” I can hear some of you saying. Maybe you’ve got one too many subscriptions already, so why pay for one more when you already have a music library of thousands of MP3 files sitting on your hard drive? Some of you, meanwhile, have meticulously crafted iTunes playlists, like mix tapes of old, that you don’t want to recreate or transfer to another service, or rare, one-off live tracks that don’t exist on mainstream services. (Phish fans, I’m looking at you.)

Now, truth be told, if any of that applies to you, you still don’t need an MP3 player — your iPhone can still sync music files from iTunes (on Windows) or the Apple Music app (on Mac), and it probably has more storage space than your old iPod ever did. Android phones, too, can play whatever music files you can load them up with. But if you really want a dedicated device for your music — or, maybe, a parentally curated set of songs to give to a kid who’s not ready for a phone — there are still MP3 device options out there. They’re not all great, and they generally come with some caveats. But if you’ve gotten this far, here’s what I can recommend, more than two decades after the iPod was first released.

Patrick Holland/CNET

iPhone SE

Best for die-hard iTunes users

The iPod Touch was the last dedicated music player in Apple’s lineup, but it was officially discontinued in May 2022. You can still find used models out there, but don’t expect them to be supported for much longer.

What to do instead? Get a used iPhone, or a new iPhone SE — and just use it on Wi-Fi. The latter will cost you about $429 all-in (for 64GB of storage), but you’ll get a device that can run the latest version of iOS, and it can pull music from iTunes (on Windows) or Apple Music (on the Mac). It works seamlessly with Bluetooth headphones and speakers, but you’ll need a pesky Lightning adapter to use old-school headphones. And, because it’s got the App Store, you can also opt for alternate services like Spotify, Amazon Music, YouTube and the like (so long as you can access a Wi-Fi hotspot), in addition to or instead of the Apple Music app.

Yes, this is way too much to pay for a “music player,” in my book. But it’s the most capable and flexible option here, especially for those who are already in the Apple services universe — or refuse to leave their iTunes-based MP3 library. It’s also a nice fallback portable MP3 player option for kids if you don’t want to spend up for an iPad, which starts at $300 and isn’t pocketable.

Apple Watch

Music on your wrist

Once upon a time, people strapped iPod Nanos to their wrists and called it an Apple Watch of sorts

Nowadays the real Apple Watch can act as a sorta-kinda iPod, at least for Apple Music subscribers. Just sync some playlists to the Watch, and you can enjoy digital music (not to mention podcasts) on a set of wireless headphones, even if the iPhone is nowhere nearby.

Mighty Vibe

Screenless Spotify option

The Mighty Vibe is the closest modern equivalent to the iPod Shuffle, the screenless iPod that was beloved by runners for weighing next to nothing and just spooling off songs from their favorite playlist. (It’s also a great gadget loophole for sleepaway camps with “no screen” rules.) The catch is that this model only works with Spotify Premium and (thanks to a recent firmware update) Amazon Music, both of which can be synced wirelessly.

The Vibe can store upwards of 1,000 songs in its music library, and — unlike the old Shuffle — it supports wireless and wired headphones. But it charges through the headphone jack via a proprietary cable, rather than more ubiquitous micro-USB or USB-C connectors. The 5-hour battery life is so-so, as is the $100 price tag (recently up from $90), which feels higher than what you want to pay for this MP3 device product in an era of $30 wireless headphones and $200 smart phones.

Other MP3 players

Yes, the products above are really the only ones I can recommend in this category with any degree of enthusiasm. But they aren’t the only options. If you’re looking for a bargain basement option (under $50), a serious high-end alternative (starting at $350 and going to four figures) or some interesting workarounds, read on.

Micro player for runners: SanDisk Clip

SanDisk Sansa Clip ZipSanDisk Sansa Clip Zip

Sarah Tew/CNET

In the (distant) past, the tiny SanDisk Clip family of players were a serviceable option for basic music playback (so long as you’re well versed in the old school drag-and-drop method of file transfer). But some Amazon reviewers have criticized the later iteration of that model — the Clip Sport Plus — saying that its Bluetooth connection wasn’t up to snuff. If you want to go this route, you might want to stick with wired headphones.

Swim-friendly option: Aftershockz Xtrainerz

xtrainerz-cropped1xtrainerz-cropped1

Aftershockz

This 4GB “player in a headphone” model uses Aftershockz’s patented bone-conduction technology. It’s also fully waterproof, and retails for about $150. (Note that CNET hasn’t tested these hands-on.)

The budget hack: Any old smartphone

galaxya10ejpeggalaxya10ejpeg

Samsung

If you’ve got an old phone — or you buy a new one without service — you’ll have access to the full realm of app-based music services, and any music files you care to upload. Something like the $180-ish Samsung Galaxy A03S (shown above) fits the bill nicely, since you can drop in a MicroSD card that you’ve preloaded with tunes.

High-end options: Astell & Kern and Sony Walkman

sony-hi-res-walkman-nw-wm1z-8.jpgsony-hi-res-walkman-nw-wm1z-8.jpg

A Sony Walkman player from 2016

Andrew Hoyle/CNET

Audiophiles have long looked down on digital music because the sound quality was notably inferior for golden-eared listeners with distinguishing tastes. But the development of lossless file formats (such as FLAC) and cheap ample multigigabyte storage have made portable high-fidelity music a reality.

At this point, there are really only two major players in the high-end portable music space: Astell & Kern and Sony (where the Walkman brand still lives on). I’ve used earlier versions of each brand, but not the current models.

Sony Walkman music players start at about $350.

Astell & Kern players start at $749.

If you’re the sort of person who has hard drives full of uncompressed music audio files — and can hear the difference between that and comparatively low-resolution MP3 and AAC files — then, by all means, pair up one of those players with your wired headphone of choice.

That said, nearly all of the streaming music services now offer lossless or high bitrate options — that’s nearly all the big players, from Tidal and Qobuz to Amazon and Apple. (Spotify HiFi, weirdly, remains a no-show.)

If you like what you hear, consider upgrading to a decent headphone DAC (that’s “digital to analog converter”) like the Audiofly Dragonfly and a serious wired headphone. Then you’ll have a solid audiophile option that’s good for the road, without the need for a standalone music player.

Music lockers: YouTube Music and iTunes Match

If you’ve got a digital music collection that includes one-offs and live tracks that aren’t available on the mainstream services, you can upload them to online services, where they can live alongside subscription tracks and be shared among multiple devices (including smart speakers).

YouTube Music, formerly known as Google Play Music, offers this service at no additional cost for up to 100,000 tracks.

Apple users can opt for iTunes Match, which lets you upload your own digital music to live in tandem with Apple Music tracks. It costs $24 a year, above and beyond the price of Apple Music.

If you opt for either of these options, make sure you keep a local backup of your files, just in case these services go away.

Note that Amazon shuttered its “MP3 locker” service in 2018.

From your phone and tablet to wireless headphones and laptop, all gadgets have their own rechargeable batteries. Many people own far too many devices to be carrying around a separate cable and charger for each one. All the space that your gadgets already take up, you don’t need even more space taken up by power bricks and cables. Thankfully, you don’t need a separate wall charger our outlet or cable for each device. That’s because the vast majority of modern devices — including newer laptops — can be charged with a one-size-fits-all USB-C charging technology: USB-C power delivery or USB-C PD.

OK, that’s a bit of an exaggeration — but not much. The fact of the matter is that if you’re packing the right kind of charging cable (or dongles), and your laptop or device was released in the past couple of years, you’ll be in very good shape. The key is getting one of the latest and greatest USB-C power delivery chargers. I spent a few weeks testing some of them and I’ve found some go-to choices for fast charging on the go.

This list goes way beyond a simple phone charger. A few commonalities to the models we focused on: Most of these use a new material called gallium nitride, or GaN, that enables high-power adapters to be made in much smaller sizes. As a result, these adapters generally deliver 60 watts of power output or better, putting them in the same ballpark as the 65-watt chargers that many laptops ship with.

Most of our top picks below include dual charging outputs instead of one, allowing for simultaneous charging of multiple devices. And they all have folding AC prongs for easy travel. We also want to note, we didn’t include car charger options here, but if you’re in the market for a USB car charger, check this one out.

If you’re looking for the best USB-C charger, read on to see which of the tried and true devices below will charge best for you.

All of the products below have been independently chosen and tested by CNET editors. We’ll update this list periodically.

RAVPower 61W Dual-Port Charger

Best do-it-all USB charger

In my opinion, this little portable charger is the best of all worlds. It’s got both a USB-C port for power delivery port and a good old-fashioned USB-A port, so it can charge any device from android smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy to a wireless headphone — or be used as a full-on laptop charger — and for most everything in between, including the Nintendo Switch, Kindle and iPad. (PS4 controllers, which tend to be very picky about their power source, didn’t seem to work.) This USB Type-C charger is great for traveling, thanks to a relatively small size — it tips the scales at just 105 grams — and fold-up prongs. In separate sessions, I saw this thing charge an HP Spectre x360 and work as a MacBook charger for a new MacBook Air from dead to about 65% in an hour and topped them off fully in a bit over 90 minutes. And when I threw an iPhone X on the second port, it had no trouble charging the phone battery and laptop battery simultaneously. Do yourself a favor: Get two — one to live permanently at home, the other to stay in the go-bag.

RAVPower 61W PD 3.0

Best tiny USB-C laptop charger

If you want ultimate portability, this USB Type-C device delivers the same power and fast charging abilities as the version above in an even smaller package: This USB device with a foldable plug can be used as a laptop charger or fully charge anything else in your bag. The only drawback is that it loses the extra USB-A output port, so it can’t charge multiple devices with more than one USB-C cable at once. It was previously selling for closer to $50, but now it’s about $40. (The white one costs a couple of bucks more.)

Sarah Tew/CNET

Anker 60W PowerPort Atom PD 2

Best dual USB-C PD charger

If you don’t need the legacy USB-A charging port, this Anker PowerPort is a good choice to charge your devices including larger devices like a MacBook Pro. This USB Type-C device does split its wattage output, so charging two laptops would slow things down considerably. But when I charge an iPhone and MacBook Air simultaneously, this Anker PowerPort gets them both to 90% and 80%, respectively, after a fast 90 minutes. Its biggest drawback: at $55, it’s the most expensive one here.

RAVPower 45W Wall Charger

Best fast charger for smartphones and tablets

Let’s temper expectations here: At 45 watts, this USB wall charger isn’t intended to charge up most laptops (though it’ll charge one if you plug it in with a cable and leave it overnight). But if you want an affordable single-port USB-C wall charger for smartphones, tablets and accessories that offers speed and can easily slip into a pocket or purse, this RAVPower is a great fast charging option — and this USB wall charger costs just $30. That’s just a dollar more than Apple’s wall charger that’s bulkier and has less than half the wattage (just 18 watts output).

How we selected USB-C PD chargers

You’ll notice this list encompasses only two brands: Anker and RAVPower. We focused on them because of our earlier positive experience with both brands. Also, we’ve seen some of these fast charging products get enthusiastic mentions on shopping sites like The Inventory, and their Amazon user reviews are generally overwhelmingly positive, regardless of whether people are talking about android, Apple, Kindle, really any kind of device.

In our tests (see below), the Anker and RAVPower models performed very closely to one another. But the reason the final list skews almost totally to RAVPower is that the company is just killing it in the value arena. In nearly every head-to-head match-up, the RAVPower charger beats its equivalent Anker model on price. But, if you see an Anker PowerPort model on sale, it’s certainly worth scooping up.

We’re not saying that there aren’t other good brands out there, but now that we’ve tested the ones listed above, we can confirm that they deliver great value for the money. If and when we see viable alternatives at these price points, we’ll update this story accordingly.

How we tested USB-C PD chargers

I did my own anecdotal testing on these models by running three products down to zero battery life, charging them up and checking the battery life indicator at intervals of 30, 60 and 90 minutes. The USB devices I used were a 2019 MacBook Air, a recent HP Spectre x360 Convertible and an iPhone X.

In most cases, I ran at least two runs per charger per product and averaged them together if they came within a reasonable percentage of each other. The asterisk indicates dual-port chargers that were charging with a cable for the laptop and a cable for the iPhone simultaneously.

Tips for using USB-C power delivery chargers

Make sure your device is compatible. If you have a small device to plug in with a cable — smartphones (whether Apple or Android smartphones), wireless headphones, iPad, Nintendo Switch and so forth — all of these chargers will almost certainly be compatible. And most of them will charge those products at a faster speed — sometimes a far faster speed — than the default charger that came with the device. For Macs, it’s easy: If your Apple laptop has a USB-C port, it will accept power delivery chargers, while older models with MagSafe power adapters won’t. On the PC and Chromebook side, it’s trickier: Most — but not all! — new laptops with USB-C ports support power delivery charging (even if they also have a traditional proprietary charging port). Check the manufacturer’s support documentation to verify.

Get the right charging cable. The reason the RAVPower dual-port model is our top pick is that it’s truly a universal charger: It will power any standard USB or USB-C device using your old-fashioned USB-A connector or newer USB-C charging cable. But if you get one of the other models above with only a USB-C output, you’ll need to make sure you get a compatible cable, such as:

  • USB-C to USB-C cable (for MacBooks, newer iPad Pros, PCs and Chromebooks and some newer accessories like speakers and headphones)
  • USB-C to Micro-USB cable (for many current and older accessories, including most non-Apple wireless headphones and devices)
  • USB-C to Lightning cable (for all iPhones, most iPads, AirPods and other Apple accessories)

Make sure the connections are secure. In at least one test, I came back to a laptop 30 mins later and found it didn’t charge at all. It turned out that one side of the cable was just half a millimeter too shallow in the laptop port, preventing a full connection.

Buy a USB-C compatible device. Slowly but surely, the entire electronics industry is moving over to USB-C as a common standard for data and power. While Apple’s Lightning port remains a huge exception to the rule, the affordable Lightning-to-USB-C cable has bridged the charging gap. Meanwhile, expect Micro USB to become more of an endangered species in the years ahead. When and where you can, try to opt for a USB-C device, cable and charger as you shop for things like battery packs, wireless headphones, tablets and other peripherals to plug-in. It’s a great way to future-proof your gadgets.

Keep a few USB-C to USB-A dongles on hand. Yes, USB-C power is pretty great — except that nearly every airline seat, coffee shop, airport lounge and hotel room now seems to be equipped with those old-fashioned USB-A charging ports. That’s why it never hurts to keep some adapters on hand for your device. The Elebase dongle shown above includes an integrated keychain that keeps it attached to the main cable. Not exactly elegant, but it gets the job done — at $9 per pair.

Only one-fifth of computers sold are desktops, these days, but if you look at the available features and storage in the more traditional home and office offerings, you’ll see that the trusty desktop computer has a lot worth considering. There’s much to be said for the portable convenience of laptops and tablets, but if you spend most of your day at a desk, it’s nice to have a more ergonomic setup and a big-screen monitor — or even one of those multiple-monitor arrays.

The best feature of desktop PCs is the durability and longevity they provide. Not only are desktops built more solidly, but not moving around much contributes to far less wear and tear than your conventional laptop will see. And another of the best desktop PC features is that you can get a decent bit more power and expandability than you could from a laptop, along with a powerful processor and a higher quality hard drive or solid-state drive for storage. That processor power and drive potential are particularly crucial if you’re planning to use your personal computer as a gaming PC or a graphics-editing powerhouse.

A desktop computer is generally going to come in the form of either a tower or an all-in-one (with an integrated screen), though there are smaller designs for tighter spaces. And while you can find Windows and Macs for as little as $500 to $700, Chrome and Linux fans have plenty of affordable options, too.

While laptops still occupy the majority of our editors’ time and effort with CNET’s hands-on reviews, we’ve rounded up recent products to bring you the very best desktop PC options, which are listed below. This list starts with models we’ve tested, and then moves on to more generic configurations. We haven’t explicitly tested those specific models in the latter batch, but the specs listed should deliver considerable value for the price, based on our experience with similarly configured laptops we’ve tested. Unless otherwise indicated, the products listed below don’t include a monitorkeyboardmouse or webcam. You’ll need to bring your own or buy them separately. We update this best desktop PC list periodically.

iMac M1 2021 (24-inch)

Sleek and speedy

Apple has fully redesigned the iMac with a body so ultrathin that it could easily be confused with a jumbo-screen iPad. It’s now built on the same superfast M1 chip found in Apple’s late-2020 MacBook Air and Mac Mini (see below), with a gorgeous 24-inch screen replacing the previous 21.5-inch version. The 1080p webcam is a big upgrade over the MacBook’s 720p model, and the rainbow of available colors — hearkening back to the 1999 iMac G3 — is a welcome addition. Just be prepared to spend up for the myriad storage and accessory upgrades. (Note that the larger 27-inch iMac has been discontinued as of March 2022.)

HP Envy 34 All-in-One PC

A great, and rare, big-screen all-in-one

Both Apple and Microsoft have discontinued their bigger-screen all-in-one desktops, so as one of the sole remaining premium big-screen options (as far as I can tell), the HP Envy 34 AIO is almost the best choice in that class by default.

It’s a fine system with a nice 34-inch display and some useful features, like a magnetically attachable webcam and Qi charging pad in the base, although you’re paying for pretty and not for performance (but it does have a laptop-version Nvidia 3060 GPU). I like the HP Envy 34 AIO, and it certainly feels like a nice home or traditional office system for people who need big screens in a small space. — Lori Grunin

Origin PC

Origin PC 5000T

Highly customizable gaming

If you’re dissatisfied with the lack of configuration options available for prebuilt gaming desktops, going with a custom builder is the best way to sate your appetite. The $5,000-plus price of this custom-configured system is too rich for, well, most people’s blood. And many people don’t need everything maxed out, even for gaming. But you can get reasonable configurations for about half the price of my evaluation unit.

Origin PC builds good, solid systems. Unless you’re looking for something dirt cheap, you’ll be able to put together something you like at a price you tolerate.

Dell XPS 8950 Desktop

Great performance for gamers and creators

While we like all-in-ones for their convenience, they’re not easy to upgrade, if they can be at all. Dell’s XPS Desktop is compact and quiet enough for a small workspace but can be loaded with a 12th-gen Core i9 processor, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti graphics card, up to 64GB of memory and 4TB of storage — and there’s still room inside for more. And if you have modest needs now, but want the room to add in components down the road, the base XPS starts at under $800. However, if you do plan to upgrade down the road, spend a little extra for its 750- or 1,000-watt power supply. Want to spend a bit less? Apple Mac Mini M1 (2020)

Affordable Mac upgrade

If you’re looking for the most affordable Mac out there, the news is good nearly all around. Apple’s smallest desktop computer was among the first to get upgraded to the lightning-fast M1 processor, which runs rings around comparable Intel-powered Macs in terms of speed and performance. Unlike MacBook laptops, the Mini boasts legacy ports like USB-A and HDMI, too. The 256GB and 512GB models will run you $699 and $899, respectively, at the Apple Store, but the good news is that they’re now frequently on sale at other retailers for $50 to $100 less. More and more Mac apps are adding compatibility for the M1 platform, and Apple’s Rosetta 2 software runs most legacy apps in a fairly speedy compatibility mode, but if you still want native Intel support, a Core i5 version of the Mini remains in the line for $1,099. HP Chromebase AiO 22

All-in-one for Chrome fams or fans

Compact all-in-one desktops make good centralized family computers. The HP Chromebase takes it a step further by pairing one with the simple and secure Chrome OS — the same operating system found on the Chromebooks your kids are probably using at school. With a 21.5-inch touchscreen attached to a gray fabric-covered base, the desktop looks like a supersized version of Google’s own Nest Hub smart display (and with Google Assistant baked in, you can use it like one, too). Inside, though, is up to an Intel Core i3-10110U processor, up to 16GB of memory and up to a 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD. The full-HD display even rotates vertically, perfect for viewing vertical videos, following recipes or scrolling your favorite sites.

Apple Mac Studio (2022)

The Mac Pro for the rest of us

The Mac Pro has long been the top dog in Apple’s computer lineup, but the current version is an aging Intel model that starts at a whopping $5,000. By comparison, the new-for-2022 Mac Studio is powered by the latest, greatest Apple silicon chips — the M1 Max or M1 Ultra — and starts at less than half that price. It’s basically a Mac Mini on steroids, and — for anyone who doesn’t want to wait for the eventual Mac Pro revision — it’s your best bet for running creative-centric Mac apps, including animation, graphics, video-editing and audio-editing software. Other recommended desktop PCs

We haven’t reviewed the specific models below, but we have reviewed systems using very similar hardware. These general configurations should serve you well, especially if you shop around for frequent deals.

Basic Windows PC tower (starting around $620)

The specs we’d suggest for a basic Windows 10 or Windows 11 machine:

  • Intel Core i5 (11th-, 12th-gen) or AMD Ryzen 5 (3000 or 5000 series)
  • Default integrated graphics (such as Intel 730 or baseline AMD Radeon)
  • 512GB or larger NVMe SSD drive
  • 12GB of RAM or more (16GB preferred)
  • Four or more USB 3.1 or 3.2 ports with USB-C and USB-A formats (at least one or two on the front)
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless
  • At least one PCI-E (x16) expansion slot (for adding a video card)
  • A DVD or Blu-ray optical drive (if you need it for legacy software or media)

With those specs in mind, you should be able to find a good PC tower from brands like Dell, Acer, Asus or HP for between $500 and $600. Here are some that fit the bill, offering a great bang for the buck if you don’t need a laptop:

Acer Aspire TC-895-UA92 (under $710)Aside from a slightly older 10th-gen Intel Core i5 CPU, this configuration otherwise includes everything listed above, along with Wi-Fi 6 compatibility and a keyboard and mouse, too.

See at Amazon

HP Pavilion Desktop TP01-2040 (under $650)This system offers a capable AMD Ryzen 5 CPU, and HP throws in a mouse and keyboard.

PC tower for light gaming and creative duties (starting around $900)

Want to do some PC gaming, or do you spend time editing photos or video? You’ll want to level up the preceding configuration with more RAM and better graphics options. Expect price points to be between $800 and $1,200 — and even higher if you go for a more bleeding-edge video card.

  • Nvidia GTX/RTX or AMD Radeon RX graphics card (GPU)
  • 16GB of RAM or more
  • 350-watt (or more) power supply

HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop (under $1,000)This HP rig boasts an 11th-generation and Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 GPU and 16GB of RAM.

See at Amazon

Basic Windows All-in-One (starts around $800)

An “all-in-one PC” (also known as AIO PC) is basically a Windows version of an iMac. That means the PC “guts” are essentially built into a monitor or its base. Unlike the PC towers listed above, all-in-ones generally offer no ability to upgrade the graphics card, and maybe not even the storage or RAM. The advantage is having fewer cables, however, since everything is integrated into the body.

Recommended specs for an all-in-one are mostly similar to the basic tower above, albeit with compromises because of space considerations. Don’t expect an optical drive, for instance, and know that performance is often a step down from “real” desktop models because some all-in-ones use laptop components to better maximize available space. You’ll want a large screen with good resolution. The sweet spots we’d suggest are:

  • 24 inches at 1,920×1,080 pixels (aka 2K or 1080p)
  • 27 inches at 2,560×1,440 pixels (aka 1440p)
  • 32 inches at 3,840×2,160 pixels (aka 4K)

The 24-inchers are good for kids, but adults should probably go for 27 inches and up. Expect to pay at least $800 at that latter size, especially if you want to avoid underpowered Intel Core i3 or AMD Athlon CPUs. The HP Envy 32/34 and Apple iMacs are examples of high end all-in-one computers, but here’s a more reasonably priced alternative.

Acer Aspire C27-962-UA91 ($995)While the screen on this Acer Aspire model is a spacious 27 inches, resolution is only 1080p (also known as 2K) — but that’s par for the course below the $1,000 price point. This model also lacks a DVD drive and USB-C ports. That said, you get a 10th-gen Intel Core i5 CPU, on-board Nvidia MX graphics (not as good as a GTX or RTX card, but better than average), half a terabyte of SSD storage and a built-in webcam (along with a keyboard and mouse).

See at Amazon

HP All-in-ones (recommended models starting at $800)

Back in early 2020, we reviewed the HP Envy 32, a Windows take on the basic iMac design. At that time, it had somewhat dated specs: a ninth-gen Intel CPU and a spinning hard drive backing up the 256GB solid-state drive. The 32-inch model appears to have been discontinued, but HP maintains a stable of current models in 22- to 27-inch screen sizes, with a new $2,000 34-inch HP Envy 34 now living at the top of the line.

See at HP

What about a Mac Pro?

apple-wwdc-2019-mac-pro-case-design2apple-wwdc-2019-mac-pro-case-design2

James Martin/CNET

While you’re paying a big premium for the Apple name, an iMac is generally a great option for Apple fans who want an all-in-one computer with a superior display. And now that the 24-inch iMac has gotten a nice overhaul, complete with the M1 chip, that’s a great starting point. And while the 27-inch iMac is no more, the new Mac Studio starts at $2,000, and offers some serious power, especially if you ramp up to the M1 Ultra chipset.

Need even more power? While Apple has a Mac Pro living at the top of its desktop line, the current model is an aging Intel design, which the company has already pledged to replace with an Apple Silicon version. If the Mac Studio can’t handle your high-end Apple needs, we’d strongly recommend steering clear of the Mac Pro until that new version hits.

Chromebox, Mini PCs and other niche options

When it comes to desktop PCs, towers and all-in-ones represent the vast majority of the market. There are alternatives, but in the 2020s, they generally represent increasingly narrow slices of that market.

machines01.jpgmachines01.jpg

Left to right: The HP Mini, Acer Revo, Intel Compute Stick and Apple Mac Mini. The Mac is the only one that’s been recently updated.

Sarah Tew/CNET

Mini PCs: Following the debut of the Mac Mini in 2005, Windows PC makers experimented with similarly tiny designs. In the wake of likable small models like the Acer Revo One and HP Pavilion Mini, we even saw (woefully underpowered) “PC on a stick” offerings starting in 2015, but interest seems to have ebbed since then. Outside of specialty vendors like Beelink, the best choices in this mini PC size are probably the Intel NUC (Next Unit of Computing), most of which are sold as hobbyist options, requiring some BYO additions like user-supplied storage, RAM and other components — including the operating system. See more bare-bones Mini PCs at Newegg.

Chromeboxes: If you’re looking for very basic computing — browsing the web, email, social media, YouTube and the like — the Chrome operating system is the most affordable route for home computing. This Google operating system effectively is little more than the Chrome web browser. That makes it easy for multiple users (only a Gmail address is needed to log in), and — because there’s no heavy operating system beyond the browser — viruses aren’t really an issue. Colloquially known as “Chromeboxes” (versus a “Chromebook” laptop), these systems don’t have beefy CPUs, RAM or storage requirements. That said, if you need any software beyond browser-based web apps, or if you don’t have excellent broadband, you’ll want to stick with Windows or Mac options above. Now, before you spend any money, you should check out the free version of the operating system known as ChromeOS Flex, which you can install on most old PCs (including running it from an attached USB drive). But if that’s not an option and you want to buy new, expect to pay between $200 and $500 for a Chrome-based desktop. However, the closer you get to that $500 price point, the more you should consider stepping up to a Chromebook laptop or a basic Windows tower (see above) for just a bit more. See Chromebox options at Newegg.

Linux PCs: No, Windows, Mac and ChromeOS are not your only operating system options. There’s a wide world of Linux operating systems out there, many of which are effectively free. You can get PCs with Linux preinstalled, but the better, more affordable option is probably installing it (or dual-booting) on a used Windows PC. See Linux PC options at Newegg.

Raspberry Pi: You may have heard of a small computer that’s no bigger than a paperback book, and can be had for about $150. That’s the Raspberry Pi, and it’s 100% real and very cool — if you’re a hobbyist looking to build your own Lego-style computer and install your own custom Linux operating systems. We just wouldn’t recommend it as a primary computer if you’re looking to run mainstream software. See the Raspberry Pi 4 kit at Amazon.

How we test computers

The review process for laptops, desktops, tablets and other computer-like devices consists of two parts: performance testing under controlled conditions in the CNET Labs and extensive hands-on use by our expert reviewers. This includes evaluating a device’s aesthetics, ergonomics and features. A final review verdict is a combination of both those objective and subjective judgments.

The list of benchmarking software we use changes over time as the devices we test evolve. The most important core tests we’re currently running on every compatible computer include: Primate Labs Geekbench 5, Cinebench R23, PCMark 10 and 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra.

A more detailed description of each benchmark and how we use it can be found in our How We Test Computers page.

Water bottles are a must-have for globe-trotters, especially on long flights, which can leave you incredibly dehydrated. This collapsible water bottle (or, really, plastic pouch) from Platypus holds two liters of liquids (that’s about how much water you should drink each day, especially if you’re active) and since it’s plastic, it weighs only 1.3 ounces when empty.

It’s the perfect collapsible bottle for travelers, campers and anyone who’s tight on storage space. This Platy comes with a screw-on top by default, but you can always pair the spout with different Platypus soft bottle caps and straws.

A noise-canceling headphone

Whether you’re listening to audio on a phone, tablet or computer, you’ll love the feeling of freedom that wireless headphones deliver — especially if you’re in the cramped confines of a coach-class airline seat. To keep out the drone of an airline’s engine noise, you’ll want either noise-isolating in-ear headphones (with a tight fit in your ear canal) or a full-size around-the-ear model. Preferences vary, but the in-ear models are smaller and travel better — though the bigger ones can be plugged into in-flight entertainment systems, if that’s your thing. All in all, they make for perfect travel gifts for men, women, kids and just about anyone.

Apple’s first foray into the world of active noise-canceling (ANC) headphones is undeniably impressive, and it should be one of the essentials among travel gadgets. Nov 2019

Before Sony went true wireless, it perfected its active noise-canceling game with the WH-1000XM3 over-the-ear headphones. The Bose models still have a lot going for them, but these Sonys win by a nose on most measures, including their superior comfort during long flights. And they’re perfect for in-flight entertainment if the person next to you just wants a good night’s sleep.

A wireless speaker

If you want to listen to some tunes (or podcasts) while you’re in your hotel room, don’t settle for your phone’s tiny built-in speaker. Plenty of wireless speakers are now available for as little as $30 to $50 — and many are even water-resistant.

JBL Clip 4

Travel tunes

This tiny Bluetooth speaker is a great travel companion because it’s small, lightweight, thin and has great battery life. It’s waterproof too, and the built-in carabiner means you can clip it nearly anywhere. It also comes in about a dozen colors, so you can seek out a design that matches your personality (or that of the person you’re gifting it to).

UE Wonderboom 2

Bigger sound for the road

If you want sound that’s beefier, the UE Wonderboom is a great gift. This speaker is about the size of a softball but delivers a lot of oomph for its size. It’s also fully waterproof — in fact, it floats. It’s the perfect gift to buy for the audio-loving traveler in your life.

A pillow to rest your head

Nothing is worse than a bobbing head that slides onto your neighbor’s shoulder. Packing a travel pillow or neck pillow will keep you comfortable during your trip, particularly if you’re intent on getting a decent night’s sleep.

Amazon

Trtl Pillow

Our travel pillow pick

We’re big fans of the Trtle travel pillow, which really looks more like a scarf and is amazing for neck support. It’s lightweight, takes up very little packing space and will keep you sleeping upright so that you don’t nod off onto the person next to you. Pro tip: You can cover your mouth with the part of the fleece that’s supposed to go under your chin — so no one sees your gaping or drooling mouth when you’re asleep.

Other Products

One of the most important aspects of traveling is to never forget the little things. Remembering to pack clothes and a passport can be easy, but so many things often get left behind. Below are some items that typically get forgotten when packing but are absolutely essential for every trip.

Amazon

EPICKA Universal Travel Adapter

The adapter for every country

I spent all of June backpacking Europe and came prepared for London with a UK adapter but failed to realize that not all of Europe used the same one (beginner’s mistake). Luckily, my friend brought a universal adapter with her and saved both of our phone’s lives. The EPICKA Universal Travel Adapter has four USB slots and the ability to adapt to several countries’ outlets.

Tide to Go Stick

The stain remover

No one is immune to spilling red wine on a white shirt or getting pasta sauce all over their pants. When emergencies like these happen, hope is not lost for your clothes. The Tide to Go stain remover truly does get almost any stain off of your clothing making it an absolute travel necessity. I personally always bring one in my purse, one in my backpack and one in my toiletry bag. For only $8 you can save almost any piece of clothing with just a few dabs of your Tide stick.

Walmart

Maxtop Fanny Pack

The pickpocket protector

I’ll be the first to admit that I loathed fanny packs prior to actually traveling. I remember walking around New York City and making fun of tourists clutching their fanny packs. Well, I was wrong. Fanny packs are the best way to carry all your valuables in one place. When roaming city streets or going on long hikes, fanny packs make it easy to hold your passport, phone, headphones and wallet without lugging around a backpack that may be prone to pickpocketing.

The Maxtop Fanny Pack has a large main pocket, a hidden back pocket and a key chain making it one of the best fanny packs on the market.

Hanging toiletry bag

For convenient storage

A hanging toiletry bag allows you to pack all creams, shampoos, conditioners and miscellaneous items you may need. Having a compact toiletry bag that easily fits in any suitcase is an absolute necessity for any avid traveller.

Hex

Hex Detergent Travel Kit

For When It’s Time to Clean the Mess

Doing laundry while on a trip can be a hassle. First you have to find a local laundromat if your accommodation doesn’t offer any laundry services, then you have to buy detergent and everything else you may need to do a load of wash. The Hex Detergent Travel Kit includes five different detergents that conveniently fit into any size bag. I wish I had this kit when I was washing my clothes in a hostel bathroom sink!

This story is part of Amazon Prime Day, CNET’s guide to everything you need to know and how to find the best deals.

I have — and like — the AirPods Pro, which are currently on sale for Prime Day close to their all-time low price. I know their automated switching between Macs and iPhones can sometimes drive users up the wall, but it works pretty well for me. And their noise-canceling prowess and superior transparency mode remain top-notch, even though the product is almost 3 years old (rumors suggest an AirPods Pro 2 model may come out this year). But when I’m not working — or not on a plane — I spend a lot of my time with a set of $22 no-name earbuds: the NyPots E90 Plus

See at Amazon

Never heard of the NyPots brand, you say? I can’t blame you. But that’s because these headphones started life as the Enacfire E90, pictured above. That model originally lived near the top of CNET’s list of the best cheap true-wireless earbuds, though it disappeared from Amazon’s listings during the retailer’s 2021 purge of brands with questionable user reviews. But — as is increasingly standard operating procedure for many China-based manufacturers — the product returned under a new brand name soon after. Thus, NyPots. (Want to pay $8 more for what appears to be the same product? Check out the MyGirl E90 earbuds instead.)

But there’s the thing: For about $22, these are pretty fantastic wireless earbuds. No, they’re not better than AirPods, but I actually find them to be more comfortable. They’re incredibly lightweight. And while they don’t sport active noise cancellation or a transparency mode, I get a nice tight seal with the included ear tips, so they do a good job of blocking out external noise. Sound quality is perfectly decent, with more low end than you’d have any right to expect from earbuds at this price. I like the “tap to pause” touch control, as I often use these for listening to podcasts. The case charges via USB-C or Qi wireless, and the buds are supposedly IPX8 water-resistant, though I’ve never put them to the test.

Now, I generally don’t make calls on these headphones (that’s when I’ll defer back to the AirPods), so I can’t really speak to call quality. And we’ve seen these buds cost a smidge less than their current $21.60 (with 10% off coupon checked), so I can’t say the Prime Day offering is their best all-time price. But since I just misplaced my previous set last week, I’ll happily be buying another pair this week. You might want to, too.

The Beats Studio Buds include some of the best features of Apple’s AirPods with a few compelling tweaks. The $150 model includes active noise cancellation technology and lets you quickly pair to iPhones and Android phones. The icing on the cake? They actually sound a bit better than the AirPods Pro, in our opinion. But right now, the Beats Studio Buds are down to $120 at Amazon and Best Buy. That’s $30 off the Apple Store price, and about $60 less than the current sale price of the AirPods Pro. The only time we’ve seen these cheaper was during Black Friday.

See at AmazonSee at Best Buy

So why get the Studio Buds over the AirPods Pro? In addition to the sound quality and similar noise-canceling offerings, including a transparency mode, the Studio Buds come in red and black so you’re not just stuck with AirPod white. They’re also a better match for Android owners, thanks to solid Android app support and USB-C charging. The biggest thing you’re giving up versus the AirPods is the lack of iCloud pairing — that is, automatic syncing and switching with all of your Apple devices.

This story is part of Gift Guide, our year-round collection of the best gift ideas.

This season, the battle for “best Roku value” has been seesawing between the Roku Express 4K Plus and the Roku Streaming Stick 4K, both of which typically hover around $30. Both are 2021 models that offer full 4K streaming, as well as remotes that can control the power and volume of the TVs to which they’re connected. The feature lists are nearly identical, although the Stick handles Dolby Vision in addition to the other HDR standards. But if that’s not important to you, the price on the Express 4K Plus continues to inch downward, and has now reached a new all-time low of $24 at Amazon and elsewhere.

See at Amazon

The Roku Express 4K Plus is an enthusiastic CNET Editors’ Choice winner because it’s a nearly universal recommendation. The tiny box adds nearly every streaming channel to any HDMI-equipped TV — from Netflix to Disney Plus to Peacock to HBO Max, and everything in between — at full 4K resolution with HDR support, for optimal color reproduction on compatible TVs. (And luckily, Roku and Google have reached an agreement to ensure that YouTube and YouTube TV will remain available.)  If your TV isn’t 4K, no problem: This model will work just fine, too. Oh, and unlike the even cheaper Roku SE ($15) and Roku Express ($23), the remote on this unit controls your TV’s power and volume as well. In short, there’s very little not to like here. Read our Roku Express 4K Plus review

To be clear, if you already have a recent Roku, Fire TV or smart TV with a built-in set of apps, there’s nothing new here. But if you have an older TV — one where the manufacturer stopped adding new streaming options to the menu long ago — this $24 investment will get you the full panoply of streaming options, including a ton of totally free content on services like the Roku Channel, Tubi, Pluto TV and more.

This story is part of Gift Guide, our year-round collection of the best gift ideas.

Editor’s note, 9:20 a.m. PT, Nov. 26: This deal appears to have ended for now, but the TV is still available for $900 at Best Buy.

What’s the best TV deal out there this Black Friday? There are plenty of “doorbusters” from no-name or third-tier brands, but the one I’d steer you to is the 65-inch TCL 6-series TV. CNET’s TV guru, David Katzmaier, named it an Editors’ Choice a year ago, and despite its age (it’s still the current model), it remains at the top of our list of Best TVs as the “best TV for the money.”

In fact, the only problem was that TCL TV prices had crept up over the years. And with component shortages and supply chain issues, we thought we wouldn’t see a lot of great TV bargains this year. Well, color us pleasantly surprised: After dropping to $898 earlier this month, the 65-inch TCL 6-Series is now $800 at Amazon. That’s the lowest price we’ve seen to date.

See at Amazon

You can read David’s glowing review, but suffice it to say, this model has all the good stuff you want in a modern TV, including 4K Dolby Vision HDR and the Roku smart TV operating system, so nearly all your favorite streaming apps are built-in.

I’ll just add that I’ve owned the older (and thus not quite as good) version of this TV since 2019, and it’s performed flawlessly since. Next to my phone and laptop, it’s probably my most-used electronic device.

Cyber Monday 2021

Yes, you could pay up for an OLED TV with “better” picture quality, or you could get an even bigger TV for less money. But at $800, this 65-inch TCL hits the sweet spot. Get it before it goes out of stock.
