What are McDonald’s Halloween Boo Buckets?

Back in 1986, McDonald’s started offering its Happy Meal kids meal in cute little Halloween-themed buckets, which can double as a kid’s trick-or-treat pail — if they’re not out for maximum candy, that is. Happy Meals usually come in cardboard boxes shaped kind of like little houses, so the buckets were a spook-tacular treat. The restaurant chain brought them back for Halloween 2022, and social media was buzzing for weeks in the lead up to the nostalgic release.

Read more: I Give McDonald’s Boo Buckets a Solid B+

How can I get a McDonald’s Halloween Boo Bucket?

Order at the restaurant or via the McDonald’s app. You can choose from a Chicken McNuggets entree (four or six pieces) or a hamburger or cheeseburger, and the meal comes with fries, apple slices (or extra fries instead) and a drink. Note that your restaurant will likely only have one bucket color at a time, so to collect all three varieties (green, white and orange), you may need to make multiple visits a few days or week apart.

What do the 2022 Halloween Boo Buckets look like?

McDonald’s is offering three different colors — the white ghost, orange pumpkin and green witch, aka McBoo, McPunk’n and McGoblin. One notable difference from past years: They don’t really have tops. There’s a raised decoration spanning one side of the handle to the other — a witch’s hat for McGoblin, a pumpkin top for McPunk’n, and a white pumpkin top for McBoo. But the bucket itself is topped with just a piece of paper, featuring Halloween stickers — there’s no full plastic lid.

How much are the Halloween Boo Buckets?

Prices vary by restaurant, but at my local McDonald’s, Happy Meals cost between $5 and $7. The bucket (and sticker sheet) replaces the toy that normally comes with the Happy Meal, so there’s no extra charge for it. McDonald’s new adult Happy Meals do come with toys — classic McDonald’s figures, plus one new creation, that all have four eyes.

Will Halloween Boo Buckets sell out?

Be warned: The Boo Buckets have received so much advance press they’re likely to sell quickly. There are likely to be collectors angling to get all three colors, which could mess with restaurant inventory. They’re available through Halloween, or while supplies last.

What did the original McDonald’s Halloween buckets look like?

The three original designs were all orange, and had the same names McDonald’s is reusing in 2022: McPunk’n, McBoo and McGoblin. All looked like jack-o-lanterns, just with different faces. McPunk’n looks happy, McBoo looks slightly startled, and McGoblin looks… sleepy, but he’s probably supposed to look scary.

Ghost and witch McDonald’s Halloween buckets

A few years later, McDonald’s added the white ghost and green witch designs. They all looked pretty happy, even the supposedly spooky witch. Here they are in an ad from 1990. Back then, the ghost bucket glowed in the dark, but as noted above, my 2022 ghost buckets didn’t. (Don’t think too much about how the Chicken McNuggets in the commercial are busying themselves making sauce, presumably to be used in their own consumption.)

When did McDonald’s stop making Halloween buckets?

Nightmare Nostalgia has a wonderful timeline of the history, if you really want to delve into a fast-food chain’s promotional past. (Not knocking you if you do, because I am one of you.) Some of the bigger changes involved a switch to vinyl glow-in-the-dark trick-or-treat bags, called McBoo Bags. In 1992, the buckets were redesigned to include cookie cutters that popped off the top. That had to be a high-water mark for McDonald’s Halloween bucket creativity. Hope somebody got a raise that year.

After that, the pails kept being tweaked, and finally vanished in 2016, going out with an It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, design.

Unreleased Halloween buckets we’ll never see

According to YouTuber Consumer Time Capsule, there were six proposed Halloween buckets that were never released, including this purr-fect black cat. Whoa, we missed out on some pop-culture goodness here. There’s also a wonderful McMummy.

It was leaked yesterday that McDonald’s Halloween Pails will be returning on 10/18 (unconfirmed, but where there’s smoke, there’s fire). Pretty exciting development, but when are we finally going to get the unreleased black cat bucket that was proposed in 1991?!?! pic.twitter.com/qyo2TTn3Tv

The biggest sporting event of the year, Super Bowl LVI is underway at the massive, ultramodern SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. This year’s NFL title game features the NFC champion, Los Angeles Rams, against the AFC champion, the Cincinnati Bengals.

No matter what happens on the field, the halftime show remains one of the most anticipated events the game. Here’s what you need to know ahead of the show.

NFL football Super BowlNFL football Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is today.

James Martin/CNET

Who’s in the Super Bowl halftime show?

There’s going to be more than one main halftime performer this year. Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar will all perform. They’ll have to divide up the time somehow — only 12 minutes are set aside for the performance. NBA star Shaquille O’Neal, for one, is kind of bummed out about it.

“I’m upset that there’s all that greatness packed into 12 minutes,” O’Neal told the Hollywood Reporter. “Because I, at least, want to hear three songs from Dre, and three from Snoop, and three from Mary and three from Kendrick. That’s like an hour performance, but I guess they’re going to have to figure out how to do all that in 12 minutes. But if Dr. Dre’s involved, all that funk and all, in 12 minutes, it’s probably going to be the best Super Bowl halftime show ever.”

What are the big Super Bowl commercials this year?

The elaborate, celebrity-filled Super Bowl commercials are a big reason why some viewers tune. This year you can see Budweiser Clydesdales, Demi Moore and Mila Kunis for AT&T Fiber, Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus for T-Mobile and Jim Carrey as The Cable Guy for Verizon, as well as Super Bowl car commercials featuring BMW, GM, Kia and more. We also expect big TV and movie trailers to drop during the game as well, for films like Jordan Peele’s Nope and series like Amazon’s Rings of Power.

Which teams are playing in the Super Bowl?

The Cincinnati Bengals play the Los Angeles Rams in this year’s big game. The Bengals will be looking to win their first Super Bowl title, while the Rams will be going for their second championship.

Should they win, the Rams would become only the second team to win the Super Bowl at home, following the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who accomplished the feat last year.

How do I watch the Super Bowl?

Super Bowl LVI will be broadcast live on NBC. You can also stream the game live on Peacock or the NBC Sports app. The game will be aired in Spanish on NBC sister network Telemundo.

NBC, CBS and Fox have previously rotated showing the game, with ABC set to rejoin the group in the future. This was supposed to be a CBS year, but back in 2019 NBC and CBS made a deal to trade years so that NBC could show both the Super Bowl and the Winter Olympics in the same month of 2022.

The Beijing Winter Olympics began Feb. 4 in Beijing, so NBC will carry both the Olympics and the Super Bowl today.

Is the Super Bowl in 4K?

No, this year’s Big Game will not be broadcast in 4K resolution. Although Fox previously made a higher-quality feed available when it last had the game in 2020, as did CBS last year, the 2022 Super Bowl on NBC will be broadcast and streamed in HD.

Best options for streaming the Super Bowl

Here are our recommendations for the best ways to watch the Super Bowl without cable. Each of the major live TV streaming services offers NBC and a free trial, but it’s not a guarantee that each service carries your local NBC station, so check the links below to make sure.

Note that streaming services typically lag 30 seconds or so behind cable and Twitter. And for the best streaming experience, follow our tips to avoid buffering and dropouts during the game.

The below options will work for streaming on a phone, tablet, computer or TV but may cost money. Those who just want to watch on a phone or tablet can watch for free with the Yahoo Sports app.

What are my Super Bowl options outside the U.S.?

International viewers should check their local listings to determine the best local option to watch or stream the Super Bowl. But if no convenient local opportunities exist, using a VPN with U.S.-based server should provide access to some or all of the streaming options listed below. See our list of Best VPNs for more.

Where is the Super Bowl being held?

SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, is home to the LA Chargers and LA Rams. The stadium just opened in September 2020, so this will be the first Super Bowl held there, as well as the first Super Bowl in the LA area in 29 years.

SoFi Stadium boosters will be proud to show off the new digs. It cost an estimated $5.5 billion, the most expensive stadium ever. It’s open-sided and covered with an independently supported see-through canopy to protect fans from the sun (and the rare LA rain). It’s also noted for the Infinity Screen by Samsung, a 2.2-million-pound 4K HDR video board that hangs over the field and displays 80 million pixels.

Future Super Bowls will be held in Glendale, Arizona (2023), Paradise, Nevada (2024) and New Orleans (2025).

Stay tuned to CNET for the latest throughout Super Bowl Sunday.

I’m not always consistent about flossing. When a dental appointment is coming up, I floss like mad to see if I can fool my dentist into thinking I do it all the time (spoiler: she’s not fooled). But when the appointment is over, it’s easy to give up on my new hygiene habit.

Then I read about aniOS app called Streaks and decided to see if it would encourage me to build healthy habits without quitting. Hey, guess what? It works! I’ve now flossed for 100 straight days, and considering I have braces and need special weird flossers, that’s a big deal.

streaks-screenshotEnlarge Image

A screenshot of my Streaks app. You can look at your streaks in calendar or bar-chart form and can maintain up to 12 different streaks at a time. (AcceleDent is a device I use because of my braces; Grace is my mother-in-law!)

Screenshot by Gael Fashingbauer Cooper/CNET

The app is $4.99 in the App Store, and it’s so simple I was almost embarrassed to buy it. All it does it measure the streak of days you complete a certain task. It’s like a to-do list you carry around on your phone, and the increasing number of days in your streak is supposed to inspire you never to skip a day.

So truly, there’s really nothing Streaks does for me that I can’t do for myself if I get a notebook or a dry-erase board or a calendar and just put a checkmark each day that I floss.

But do I do that? Do I carry a notebook or a calendar or a dry-erase board around with me and hasten to scribble an X on the day’s date once I floss? No, I do not. But I do carry my smartphone around with me pretty much all the time. So when I floss, or take my allergy medicine, or scoop the cat box, or make my steps goal, or whatever it is I’m trying to turn into a habit, I can just open the app and mark it as “done.”

You start by choosing what streaks you want to build. There are some presets (flossing is one) but you can also just type in whatever you want. Once you set the task up, you need to press it to indicate you completed it that day.

That’s it! The app rewards you with a happy little sound, and by keeping your streak going. It tells you how long your streak is running and creates little charts that show you extra info, such as your best-ever streak, or the time of day you usually complete your task.

You can also set up a streak for something you want to stop doing, such as getting credit for days when you don’t smoke. There’s also a “don’t pick nose” preset if that’s your issue. You can set up the app for a timed task, like “read for 10 minutes” or “practice instrument.” You can link Streaks to your Apple watch activity tasks. You don’t have to set a task to be done daily, you can do it every other day, or weekly, or whatever it requires.

So far, I have stuck to the ultra-simple. I have just a few tasks, like flossing, that I try to do most every day. But it works. I just reached 100 days on my flossing streak, and to me, that’s a climbed-Mount-Everest level of difficulty. If I keep it up, I expect my dentist will see a difference during my next cleaning. (SHE HAD BETTER.)

Now that I’ve forked over money for Streaks, I notice other apps in the App Store that do the same kind of thing. But Streaks keeps it simple, and once I bought the app, my husband was able to use it for free thanks to Apple’s Family Sharing plan.

So maybe this is less an endorsement for one particular program and more of a notification that you, too, might find keeping a streak going a rewarding way to set up a good habit. Even if you just get yourself a dry-erase board and a pen.

Sure, the new Apple iPhone 11, announced Tuesday at Apple Event, might be pricey, and it might look like it has a fidget spinner or a coconut attached to the back. But come on! It comes in purple!

That’s not the only color, of course. The iPhone 11 comes in six hues, including yellow, white, green, black and red. But it was purple that royally caught consumer attention when the colors were announced.

For some, the purple hue might be all it takes to send them off to the Apple store. Wrote one Twitter user: “Ugh, why would I ever need the very latest iPhone, it can’t be worth the mo—Did you say it comes in PURPLE?!?”

Admittedly, some aren’t sure the color is deep enough to be called purple.

It’s barely purple-adjacent.

And the look of the phone turns others off. Wrote one Twitter user, “the audacity Apple has in making a cute purple color for the ugliest iPhone yet”

But while the iPhone 11 does come in purple, the fancier iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max do not, which bummed out some purple people-eaters. Wrote one Twitter user, “I’m sure the iPhone 11 Pro is nice and all but it doesn’t come in purple and I’m a girly girl and I want pretty purple and yes that’s how I make all of my adult purchasing decisions come at me bro.”

Personally offended the iPhone 11 Pro doesn’t come in pink or purple, as if only /masculine colors/ can be professional 🙃

— Tamar Herman (@TamarWrites) September 10, 2019

But to be realistic about it, is anyone going to even see the purple through a phone case? “Does anyone actually see their phone?” wrote one Twitter user. “That purple phone is nice but then it just gets covered in a protective case.”

I do like that purple, but I don’t think I could switch back to iPhone. It would be covered by a case anyway.

— MattMan Steady Mattin’ (@MattFindley) September 10, 2019

And don’t even try to sell it to those who are colorblind. “Everyone let me know how the new #iPhone colors are, because as far as my colorblind eyes can see, the green is gray, purple is blue, and yellow is just…light urine,” wrote one Twitter user.

It’s a Black Mirror plotline written by your favorite cat lady: Telephones shaped like Garfield, the orange cartoon cat who loves lasagna and hates Mondays, have been mysteriously washing up on a French beach for three decades.

Now the mystery is solved. A shipping container, lost in the 1980s when Garfield was one cool cat, has been hiding out in a rocky, partially submerged sea cave for years, regularly releasing old phone parts to confuse locals.

For more than 30 years, plastic phones shaped like the cartoon cat Garfield have been washing up on French beaches. The mystery is now solved: a shipping container which washed up during a storm in the 1980s was found in a hidden sea cave 📷 Fred Tanneau pic.twitter.com/mMs0fzS7mD

— AFP news agency (@AFP) March 28, 2019

The phone mystery was solved after journalists at FranceInfo reported on the case, leading volunteers to finally track down the cave, local resident Claire Simonin-Le Meur told AFP.

The bright-orange corded phones are in the shape of a reclining Garfield, and the cat’s eyes roll open when the receiver (remember receivers? phones used to have receivers that you lifted up) is picked up. The volunteers were told of a big storm that struck the area in the 1980s, which perhaps caused the container of phones to become lost at sea.

A French news video published earlier in the week shows just how battered the phone parts have become over the years, and how inaccessible the rocky cave is. According to the BBC, it’s unknown just how many phones remain inside the container.

The cat phones’ nine lives may seem funny, but the matter of plastic pollution in the oceans is no joke. “Some forecasts predict that there will be more plastic in the seas than fish by 2050,” CNET sister site CBS News noted in a story on the phones.

Still, it could be worse. They could be Ziggy phones.

Airports are noisy even on regular days, what with jet engines revving and suitcases clattering. But on Wednesday, airports, malls and even libraries all rattled with the same text alert noise, as millions of cell phones received the first ever Presidential Alert text message.

The official Twitter account of Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, N.C., recorded and shared a short video of the exact moment the alert popped up on phones (11:18 a.m. PT/2:18 p.m. ET).

Travelers walking through the airport seem unbothered by the group “beeeeeeeep!” Some check their phones, but others, perhaps remembering the numerous warnings that this was only a test, keep heading on their journeys.

Loudly slurping ramen noodles is considered normal in Japan. But if you’re not in Japan, or just prefer to be a little more discreet about your dining, there’s a solution.

Japanese instant-ramen giant Nissin, maker of Top Ramen and Cup Noodles (formerly Cup O’ Noodles in the U.S.), has invented the Otohiko fork, a noise-canceling fork that hides slurping sounds with help from users’ smartphones.

Sensors in the fork detect slurping. The fork sends a signal to the diner’s smartphone, which masks the sounds by playing white noise or other soothing sounds. (Watch the above video for a wacky demonstration, or check out Chowhound’s take here.)

Only the most vehement slurping haters are likely to buy one of these high-tech utensils. The forks cost $130 each and only 5,000 are being made. And the limited run will only be made if enough of the forks are pre-ordered.

We can think of at least one good use for one: Drax the Destroyer could’ve benefited from an Otohiko fork in that one awful soup-slurping scene in ads for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.”

Alexa just wants to live long and prosper.

To mark the premiere of CBS’ “Star Trek: Discovery” on Sept. 24, the Amazon Echo has decided to boldly go where no smart speaker has gone before, adding a spaceship full of Trek-inspired skills. (Disclosure: CBS is CNET’s parent company.)

Not all of these skills are new, but they’re all fun to try — especially if you’ve renamed your Alexa smart assistant “Computer,” and can pretend she’s answering in Majel Barrett-Roddenberry’s iconic voice from the show.

Related stories

When you want an update on weather, news and other daily info, say, “Alexa (or, Computer), damage report!”

Alexa can also deliver sound effects from the original show if you use the following commands:

  • “Alexa, red alert!”
  • “Alexa, beam me up.”
  • “Alexa, fire photon torpedoes.”

Alexa will also entertain fans with her answers to the following requests or questions:

  • “Alexa, speak Klingon.”
  • “Alexa, what would Scotty say?”
  • “Alexa, revenge is a dish best served cold.” (Warning: Her response to this is loud and might frighten your neighbors.)
  • “Alexa, what is your mission?”
  • “Alexa, state Starfleet rank and class.”
  • “Alexa, what would Dr. McCoy say?”
  • “Alexa, do you trust Klingons?”

And if you think you know your Trek trivia, try “Alexa, open Star Trek,” and prepare to show off your knowledge.
