Getting trapped in the quantum realm turns into a family affair in the new trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the third Ant-Man installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The trailer, out Monday, shows what happens when Ant-Man Scott Lang’s daughter Cassie (Kathryn Newton) uses a device to send a signal into the quantum realm. Before former government agent Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) can stop it, they all get sucked in, along with Lang (Paul Rudd), Lang’s love interest Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) and Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), who invented the Ant-Man suit.

It turns out, there’s a whole secret universe there, and perhaps Janet hasn’t told the crew everything about her time in the realm. We also get a glimpse of Kang the Conqueror, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next supervillain.

The quantum realm is a dimension in the multiverse. Lang got stuck in the realm after the events of Avengers: Infinity War. In Avengers: Endgame, Lang described it as its own microscopic universe. The Avengers took advantage of the realm’s unpredictable rules of time to reverse Thanos’ snap.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania hits theaters February 17, 2023.

This story is part of Focal Point iPhone 2022, CNET’s collection of news, tips and advice around Apple’s most popular product.

The Apple Watch Series 8 and iPhone 14 will be able to detect if you’ve been in a car crash, Apple said at its “Far Out” event Wednesday.

Apple introduced the feature when talking about the new Apple Watch Series 8, its new smartwatch. Crash detection uses two sensors to detect impacts and will automatically connect the person wearing it to emergency services, passing along their location info. It will also notify emergency contacts.

Those sensors include an axis gyroscope and high G-force accelerometer — the iPhone 14 has a new set, as well. The company said it spent years studying vehicle impacts at crash test labs and focused on four main types of crashes: front, side, rear-end and rollover crashes.

Machine learning takes information from the sensors, as well as others like the watch’s GPS and microphone to determine there’s been a crash. It was trained on more than 1 billion hours of driving and crash data. The feature only runs when you’re driving and all the data is processed on the device, Apple promised.

Crash detection is one of the many new things Apple announced on Wednesday. The Apple Watch Ultra and AirPods Pro 2 were also unveiled, alongside a release date for iOS 16

NFTs could be coming to Instagram in the next several months, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said during a talk at SXSW.

“I’m not ready to announce exactly what that’s going to be today, but over the next several months, [you’ll get] the ability to bring some of your NFTs in, and hopefully over time be able to mint things within that environment,” he said, describing the future of NFTs, or nonfungible tokens, on the photo-sharing platform.

Zuckerberg was speaking via video at SXSW on Tuesday, in conversation with Daymond John, founder and CEO of Fubu, and one of the sharks on ABC’s Shark Tank.

Instagram wouldn’t be the first social network to equip its platform with the trendy digital assets, which are tied to a blockchain for their identity. Twitter made its entrance into NFT land in January, letting Twitter Blue subscribers display their NFTs as profile pics.

Apart from NFTs, Zuckerberg talked about the metaverse and reaffirmed the company’s confidence in the concept.

“The future belongs to the people who believe in it more than others,” he said.

He touched on a variety of issues facing the metaverse, very broadly defined as a digital world (or worlds) that builds off the internet, via technology including smartphones, VR headsets and AR glasses, and that will be a place to socialize, work and shop.

One of them, he said, is being conscious that the tech being built now will improve over time.

Zuckerberg also talked about need to create avatars that people can relate to and that will represent them, not just in terms of skin color and body shape, but also the inclusion of things like wheelchairs and hearing aids.

“The question is, ‘Do I see myself in this? And is this a place I want to invest?'” he said.

For Zuckerberg, the answer is clearly yes. So much so, that the company he founded — Facebook — changed its name in October to Meta. “This is the next chapter of our work, and, we believe, for the internet overall,” Zuckerberg said at the Facebook Connect event at the time.

At SXSW, he again noted that he believes the metaverse will end up being the most important part of what Meta does.

There’s still a lengthy road ahead before these digital worlds become functional or widespread. At Mobile World Congress in February, Zuckerberg talked about how the metaverse will require connectivity infrastructure that can support the technology as it progresses, and how it’s going to take collaboration with various partners to make that happen.

Moving your digital goods

He underlined this theme at SXSW, touching on how people should be able to take the digital goods they’ve purchased from digital place to digital place — like a sweatshirt for an avatar.

“It’s not that useful for people to buy their clothing in one game or one experience but they can’t bring it to another one,” he said. “Then they might not buy as much stuff, which means that there will be a smaller creator economy for everyone.”

Though it didn’t come up at SXSW, Meta will also have to face the challenge of old problems in a new digital form — harassment in virtual reality

Zuckerberg also ran through a laundry list of tech challenges being worked through, and compared the Quest headset, made by Meta’s Oculus unit, to the original iPhone as an initial milestone.

He kicked off his SXSW session acknowledging the awkwardness of talking about future technology in the midst of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. After Facebook and Instagram (also owned by Meta) cracked down on misinformation about the war in Ukraine, Russia blocked access to both services.

“We have teams working across the company that are working on trying to make sure that our services are available and that people can stay connected during this time,” he said. “I just want to mention it up front. Just share my support for everyone in Ukraine.”

Global shipments of PCs in 2021 reached their highest numbers since 2012, according to a report out Wednesday from IDC.

“2021 has truly been a return to form for the PC,” Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC’s Mobile and Consumer Device Trackers, said of the 348.8 million units that shipped last year. The report also highlighted that the total figure was up 14.8% from 2020

Ubrani cited factors like “consumer need for PCs in emerging markets and global commercial demand.” The report also noted that shipments could’ve been even higher if not for issues like supply shortages.

Among the top companies for PC shipments in 2021 were Lenovo (in the top spot), followed by HP, Dell, Apple and Acer.

Apple could have a slate of new iPhones and Apple Watches in the works for 2022 and 2023, MacRumors reported Tuesday.

Citing a note to investors from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, MacRumors said Apple may be planning two new iPhone SE models for 2022 and 2023. The 2022 model could arrive midyear with 3GB of memory. It could be followed in the next year by one with 4GB of memory, a bigger display and other feature changes.

As for the Apple Watch, Kuo reportedly said 2022 could bring the Series 8, a second generation of the Apple Watch SE and an “extreme sports version.”

Kuo also made other predictions, including second-generation AirPods Pro slated for late 2022 and even that a second-generation AR headset is already in the pipeline for 2024.

Apple didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Apple is showcasing its Product Red devices and accessories for World AIDS Day on Wednesday. Included in the Product Red lineup are the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini, Apple Watch Series 7 and Apple Watch bands.

The company is also donating $1 to the Global Fund for every purchase made using Apple Pay on apple.com, in the App Store or in an actual Apple store, through Dec. 6.

“As COVID-19 continues to impact communities around the world, including those living with HIV, the fight to end global pandemics is more urgent than ever,” the company said in a release.

In addition to the Product Red devices, Apple is offering new Red Watch faces, highlighting a dating app called Positive Singles for those with HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections, and boosting collections of books, audiobooks, TV shows and music in Apple Books, Apple Music and Apple TV about the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Apple said that in the last 15 years, Apple customers have helped raise about $270 million. The money has gone toward efforts like prevention, testing and counseling for those with HIV/AIDS. Apple hasn’t said what percentage goes toward donations.

If you’re itching to add your state ID or driver’s license to your Apple Wallet, you’ll have to wait just a little longer.

An update to Apple’s website describing iOS 15 noted that the feature is slated for “early 2022.” The change was spotted Tuesday by MacRumors, which noted that the feature had been expected late this year.

Apple didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

In September, the company announced the first batch of states set to get the feature. It was initially introduced at WWDC 2021.

“The addition of driver’s licenses and state IDs to Apple Wallet is an important step in our vision of replacing the physical wallet with a secure and easy-to-use mobile wallet,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, in a statement at the time.

YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim doesn’t agree with the platform’s decision to hide the public dislike button from videos.

Karim said so by changing the description of Me at the Zoo, which was the first video posted to YouTube, back in April 2005. The short video has more than 200 million views and shows Karim talking about elephants. The new description says, “The ability to easily and quickly identify bad content is an essential feature of a user-generated content platform. Why? Because not all user-generated content is good. It can’t be. In fact, most of it is not good. And that’s OK.”

The description, several paragraphs long, also warns of a possible decline in YouTube’s quality because of the decision. “Does YouTube want to become a place where everything is mediocre?” it reads. “Because nothing can be great if nothing is bad.”

In November, YouTube made the decision to hide pubic dislike counts, citing “dislike attacks,” a harassment tactic that the platform said was particularly hurting newer and smaller creators.

“We heard during the experiment that some of you have used the public dislike count to help decide whether or not to watch a video.” YouTube said in a blog post. “We know that you might not agree with this decision, but we believe that this is the right thing to do for the platform. We want to create an inclusive and respectful environment where creators have the opportunity to succeed and feel safe to express themselves.”

Karim couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

Airbnb is rolling out 50 new features, many of which are aimed at travel flexibility born of remote work.

In a blog post Wednesday, the company outlined updates including a verified Wi-Fi tool that lets you check a listing’s internet speed, a new translation feature and the ability to search listings up to a year in advance.

“For the first time ever, millions of people can now travel anytime, anywhere, for any length, and even live anywhere on Airbnb,” said CEO Brian Chesky in the post.

AirBnb is also introducing a review of its accessibility features that will make sure what’s listed is accurate, as well as AirCover, which is $1 million in damage protection and $1 million in liability coverage among other things for hosts.
