The 2022 NFL season is underway. Week 2 began with the Chiefs taking down the Chargers in Amazon’s first Thursday Night Football telecast. This Sunday, however, you can find the NFL back on the more traditional stations on CBS, Fox and NBC before a doubleheader Monday night on ESPN wraps up the second weekend of football.

The most notable game on Sunday could be on Sunday Night Football as Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers look to get their first win of the 2022 campaign when they host the Chicago Bears at 8:20 p.m. ET (5:20 p.m. PT) on NBC.

Here’s what you need to know to watch and stream the opening game, and our recommendations for the best ways to watch the rest of the 2022 NFL season, including RedZone, week in and week out without cable.

What are my streaming options for NFL games in 2022?

Paying for cable is the easiest solution but not the cheapest. For cord-cutters looking to save some money, NFL football streaming options can get a bit complicated, with games played across three different days and nights each week on different channels and streaming services.

Most NFL games are played on Sunday, with a game each week on Thursday night and another each week on Monday night. On Sundays, games start at 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m. PT) and 4 p.m. ET (1 p.m. ET), with most AFC teams on CBS and most NFC teams on Fox.

Although the first Thursday night game was on NBC, the rest of the games for Thursday Night Football will be shown on Amazon Prime Video. Unlike last season, Prime Video is now the exclusive home to Thursday Night Football and the games are no longer available on Fox or NFL Network (though the games will be available on TV in teams’ local markets).

As in previous seasons, Monday Night Football games will be on ESPN. In addition, NFL Network will show three international games played in London and Munich this season.

All five of the live TV streaming services carry ESPN and Fox, and all but Sling TV carry CBS. All but DirecTV Stream carry NFL Network. For the games on CBS and Fox, keep in mind that not every service carries every local network, so check each one using the links below to make sure it carries CBS and Fox in your area.

In addition to Prime Video, there are three other streaming services that cord-cutting NFL fans should consider. The paid Premium plan of Paramount Plus will show CBS games on Sundays, and the paid Premium plan of Peacock will show NBC’s broadcasts of Sunday Night Football.

And then there is ESPN Plus, which will have an exclusive game in Week 8 when the Broncos take on the Jaguars in London.

Wait, there’s one more streaming service to consider this year. The NFL is launching a new streaming service for watching games on your phone or tablet — no casting to your TV. In past years, you could do this for free with the Yahoo Sports app, but now you’ll need to pay $5 a month or $40 for the season for the NFL Plus app. With it, you’ll be able to watch every local game on Sunday and the national games on Sunday, Monday and Thursday nights as well as the playoffs and Super Bowl — again, only on your phone or tablet.

Lastly, there’s NFL RedZone, a channel that springs to life each fall and shows live NFL action during the Sunday afternoon games. It pops in and out of the live games and attempts to show each touchdown scored in each game. RedZone is available as an add-on on four of the five major live TV streaming services — all but DirecTV Stream.

Best for everything: YouTube TV ($65)

YouTube TV logo on a phone in front of a TV.YouTube TV logo on a phone in front of a TV.

Sarah Tew/CNET

Our pick from the last two years remains our go-to choice in 2022.

At $65 per month each, YouTube TV checks all the NFL boxes. Local channels CBS, NBC and Fox are included in many markets, and ESPN and the NFL Network are also included so you can watch Sundays and Monday nights. The next best options are FuboTV and Hulu Plus Live TV; both offer the same channels as YouTube TV for NFL fans, but for $70 a month.

Want to follow your fantasy team with RedZone? That’s available on all three services as part of an add-on. If you’re a YouTube TV subscriber, you can add the $11 per month Sports Plus add-on by clicking on your profile and going to Settings, then the Membership tab. FuboTV subscribers can go into My Profile and choose Manage Add-ons to get its $11-per-month Sports Plus with NFL RedZone offering. And Hulu users can now add RedZone for $10 per month with its Sports add-on.

Both YouTube TV and FuboTV allow three people to watch at once (Hulu allows two live streams) and all three have apps on nearly every mobile device and major streaming platform, including Amazon Fire TV, Google TV, Roku and Apple TV.

While all three are largely similar, we like YouTube TV for its superior DVR — unlimited storage compared with 30 hours on FuboTV and 50 hours on Hulu. We also like YouTube TV because it gives you an option to stream in 4K for an extra $20 a month. FuboTV does, too, with its $80-a-month Elite plan. Keep in mind that only Fox and NBC offer 4K NFL broadcasts; CBS and ESPN do not.

See at YouTube TV

DirecTV Stream offers the main broadcast channels for NFL games, but it starts at $70 per month and lacks NFL Network and RedZone.

Sling TV’s Orange and Blue plan for $50 a month gets you ESPN and the NFL Network, and, in select major markets, Fox and/or NBC, but you’ll still lack CBS. You can also add RedZone for $11 per month with the Sports Extra add-on.

The cheapest way to stream NFL RedZone

A frequent fan-favorite method of following all the NFL action on Sundays, RedZone is a way to catch every big play around the league. The cheapest road to RedZone is to get Sling TV Blue for $35 per month and add the $11 per month Sports Extra add-on.

This option can also be streamed on a host of devices including iOS, Android, Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV and web browsers.

See at Sling TV

Note: If you only subscribe to Sling’s Orange package you won’t be able to get RedZone in Sports Extra. Your base package needs to be either Sling Blue or its larger Sling Blue Plus Orange bundle for you to be able to get RedZone as an add-on. If you choose the latter, the Sports Extra add-on is $15 per month as you will also get additional channels like the SEC Network, ACC Network and PAC 12 Network.

If you mainly plan to watch on a phone, you can also check out RedZone Mobile, which is in the NFL app. This is a separate subscription from NFL Plus and runs $35 for the season (which breaks down to around $7.78 per month for the roughly four-and-a-half months of regular season football). While this is one of the cheapest ways to get RedZone, be aware that — similar to NFL Plus — you will not be able to AirPlay or Chromecast it onto a larger screen and will need to watch on your phone.

Budget alternative for NFC fans in big cities: Sling Blue ($35) or an antenna ($20 one-time)

Sling Blue Orange 2020Sling Blue Orange 2020

Sarah Tew/CNET

Those looking to save some cash might want to check out Sling Blue for $35 a month. While it lacks ESPN, meaning you’ll miss out on Monday Night Football, in select markets you’ll be able to get Fox and NBC. The catch is that those markets are mainly in big cities, so if you live outside one of those areas, Sling Blue might not be for you.

You can also add RedZone through the company’s $11 per month Sports Extra add-on.

Fox broadcasts most NFC games on Sundays, while NBC has Sunday Night Football. CBS, which broadcasts the bulk of AFC games, isn’t included on Sling at all. But an antenna can fill those local channel gaps without a monthly charge.

Budget alternatives for AFC fans: Paramount Plus (or an antenna)

045-paramount-plus-launch-3-4-2021045-paramount-plus-launch-3-4-2021

Sarah Tew/CNET

There are some apps that offer CBS’ slate of Sunday AFC games live, including Paramount Plus’ Premium tier for $10 per month. Depending on where you live, however, your local CBS station (and those NFL games) might not be available. CBS offers livestreaming services in many markets; you can check for yourself if your area has live CBS streaming here.

An antenna is another option for getting CBS. And as we mentioned above, an over-the-air antenna connected to your TV provides another option, no streaming or monthly fee required, as long as you have good reception.

Thursday Night Football: Amazon Prime Video

In past years, Thursday Night Football games were shown on Prime Video but were also available on Fox or NFL Network. This year, starting Week 2, the games on Thursday nights will be available only on Prime Video, giving NFL fans more incentive than free two-day shipping to sign up for an Amazon Prime account for $15 a month or $139 a year. You can also subscribe only to Prime Video for $9 a month.

What about Sunday Ticket?

For one more season, NFL Sunday Ticket is still largely limited to DirecTV satellite subscribers. While that is expected to change in 2023, those who live in buildings that can’t add a satellite dish can already get a streaming version to watch football starting at $294 for its To Go package for the season, or $396 for a Max package that includes the RedZone channel (a student version is also available at a discount). You can check your address on the Sunday Ticket site. Both packages have a one-week free trial.

The problem here, however, is that even if you’re eligible, it doesn’t include local games. You can only watch Sunday games that aren’t being broadcast on CBS, Fox or NBC in your area. They also won’t be helpful come playoff time — as you’ll need your local stations and ESPN to catch all those games.

YouTube TV: $65

Best for everything

For $65 a month, you’ll get all the major football channels with YouTube TV. Plus, RedZone is available for an extra $11 per month. Plug in your ZIP code on YouTube TV’s welcome page to see which local networks are available in your area.

Sling TV Blue: $35

Best for tighter budgets

Sling TV’s $35-a-month Blue plan includes NBC, Fox and the NFL Network. Enter your address here to see which local channels are available where you live. NFL RedZone is also available for an extra $11 per month.

Note: This version of Sling TV does not include ESPN. For that, you’ll need to switch to the similarly priced Orange plan or go for the combined $50 per month Orange and Blue bundle. With the combined plan, RedZone is an extra $15 per month.

Paramount Plus Premium: $10

Cheap alternative for AFC fans

Those looking for CBS games will be able to stream them on Paramount Plus with its $10 per month Premium tier. You can check for yourself if your area has live CBS streaming here.

Amazon Prime Video: $9

Thursday Night only (starting Sept. 15)

Thursday Night games, starting with Week 2, will be available only on Amazon Prime Video. For millions of Amazon Prime subscribers, the Prime Video channel is already included at no extra cost. But if you’re not a subscriber, it might be worth it to shell out the $9 a month for the stand-alone TV service fee.

This story is part of Focal Point iPhone 2022, CNET’s collection of news, tips and advice around Apple’s most popular product.

Apple’s embrace of virtual, embedded SIM cards in the iPhone 14 line — eliminating the SIM card slot for US models — has led some online to worry that switching carriers is about to get a lot more difficult. Smaller carriers like Mint Mobile, US Mobile and Boost Mobile, however, see it as just the opposite.

“Mint has always believed in digital technologies that enhance and ease wireless services,” Aron North, Mint Mobile’s chief marketing officer, said in a statement to CNET. “Mint has been supporting [the] eSIM for almost two years because we knew, even back then, this innovation would allow users to switch faster and easier.”

Apple has supported digital SIM cards dating as far back as 2018’s iPhone XS, XS Max and XR. Last year’s iPhone 13 line expanded that support and allowed for multiple eSIMs to be enabled at once, letting customers easily swap carriers or make use of multiple phone numbers, for instance, for work and personal use.

Apple’s Newest Releases

While the physical SIM card slot won’t be included on the iPhone in the US, international phones will still have a physical SIM card slot.

“I think it’s transformational,” Ahmed Khattak, founder and CEO of US Mobile, a mobile virtual network operator that offers service on Verizon and T-Mobile’s respective networks. “I think the fact that it even happened … I’m shaking my head … because it really democratizes connectivity.”

“I didn’t expect that they [would] just go cold turkey on physical SIM cards,” he adds. “The fact that they just got rid of it like headphone jacks is surprising.”

Boost Mobile CEO Stephen Stokols believes eSIM technology makes it “way easier to switch” providers. Boost Mobile uses a combination of AT&T, T-Mobile and parent Dish’s wireless networks. Once a Sprint brand, it became part of Dish as a result of T-Mobile’s 2020 merger with Sprint, with the satellite TV provider now in the process of becoming a fourth network option to rival AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.

Later this year Dish will start offering Boost Infinite, a wireless service that seems set to more directly compete with the big three providers. Having an easier way to get customers to switch networks could be key to its ability to grow.

No different than signing up for Netflix

A physical SIM card, Stokols says, usually takes a few days to arrive if ordered online. Customers then have to put the SIM card into their phone and go through an activation process. With the eSIM, he says the activation and transferring can be done “immediately” at the time of purchase.

“It looks a lot like software… It’s literally ‘you sign up online and you activate.’ No different than [when] you sign up for Netflix.”

Khattak has nearly 250,000 subscribers for his US Mobile service, with a third of his customers using eSIMs today.

“It’s easier for you to move in, it’s easy for you to move out,” he says. “I think the reason why people think it’s not that easy is because most carriers have made it very difficult” to switch in the past. “But I think if you try it out… you realize it’s so easy.”

Khattak says that the process can potentially take “less than a minute to get your device provisioned with us.” If you wanted to leave, that could similarly take “less than a minute to cancel your phone number” and bring it to someone else, which is known as “porting.”

He notes that the porting process is largely the same via eSIM as it was with physical SIM cards, but because you don’t need to wait for a physical SIM card to show up it can go faster, leading to a potentially more seamless experience. You don’t have to deal with figuring out what size SIM card goes into your phone, when to put it in during activation or having to search for 16- or 17-digit numbers to enter into a website or repeat to a customer service representative to activate the physical SIM cards.

Khattak envisions that, over the next couple of years “the end result” of the switch to eSIM technology will lead to people “buying their cell phone connectivity on the app stores, not through local stores.”

All three of the main US providers support the eSIM. Some, like T-Mobile, have even been utilizing the technology to offer free trials of their networks as a way to lure customers from competitors.

Last month it expanded the program, now dubbed Network Pass, to allow for three free months of T-Mobile service. Using the eSIM, the virtual SIM card is downloaded from T-Mobile’s app and is designed to exist alongside your current provider to let you see if T-Mobile’s network works as well or exceeds what a rival might be offering. You will need your phone to be unlocked to participate, but the company doesn’t run a credit check or even take down a credit card number.

If you want to switch, the app will guide you through the process. If you want to stick with your current provider, you can simply delete the eSIM inside the settings app of your phone.

US Mobile and Verizon-owned Visible offer similar free trial programs over apps that use an eSIM to allow you to try out their respective networks.

Growing pains expected

Although there is plenty of optimism from some smaller wireless players for the future, some wireless watchers do envision a few potential issues in the transition. For one, finding out who’s accepting eSIMs is not readily apparent. Apple has a list of eSIM-ready wireless providers on its website, but as of when this is written, that only includes 39 networks and still lacks some MVNOs, including US Mobile.

“In the short term, there are going to be a lot of growing pains as carriers streamline the process of converting from physical SIMs,” Avi Greengart, an analyst for research firm Techsponential, tells CNET. “Things go wrong,” he says, noting that there are issues with MVNOs that don’t currently support the eSIM, as well as potentially with the process of transferring from an eSIM to a physical SIM card if you needed to go back to an older device.

That said, Greengart does see the benefits in the technology, particularly when it comes to consumers’ flexibility for choosing network providers, switching between networks and managing multiple phone lines on one account.

“I think in the short term, there’s going to be some pain, and in the long term, I think it’ll actually be OK.”

With the iPhone 14 now available and relying on eSIM in the US, switching between carriers could soon become faster and easier than ever. You won’t have to head into a store or wait for a physical SIM card to ship to you. With eSIM, adding new wireless service could be done in a matter of minutes and be as simple as downloading an app. Some providers, like T-Mobile, have already even turned to the technology as a way to get you to test drive its network alongside your current one

That is, assuming you have an unlocked device. Whether you are debating switching providers or planning a trip abroad, here’s what you need to know about unlocking a phone on AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile.

Why are phones “locked”?

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro MaxiPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max

Phones, like the iPhone 14 Pro line, can be locked to a carrier when purchased on an installment plan.

James Martin/CNET

Before we go into unlocking, first let’s explain what it means for a phone to be “locked” or “unlocked.”

CNET Tech Tips logoCNET Tech Tips logo

Phones are expensive, and in the US the major wireless providers often are willing to subsidize that cost in exchange for you committing to staying with them for a period of time. For years this was through two-year contracts, but today it’s largely in installment plans. You trade in your current phone and AT&T/T-Mobile/Verizon will give you a hefty discount on a new one so long as you are willing to be on a certain plan and stay with them for 24 to 36 months.

To incentivize staying, the carriers often dish out the discount as monthly bill credits. If your new iPhone 14 costs $27.78 a month at AT&T, the carrier will give you a monthly credit on your bill for that amount until the phone is paid out (which at AT&T, is now 36 months). Want to upgrade early or leave to another provider? You’ll have to be willing to pay out the balance of what’s owed.

Because the carriers don’t want people to buy a phone and then ditch it immediately, they also added a software layer of security that limits the phone to their network. This is known as being locked to a network, with unlocked devices available to work on any network that supports it including internationally.

Those looking for freedom from the start should note that Apple, Samsung, OnePlus, Google and others will sell you a phone unlocked, and may even offer a discount if you have another device to trade in. It is worth mentioning that these discounts are often much lower than what a carrier might offer.

How long do the locked periods last? How can I get free?

A pair of phones with images of padlocks on their screensA pair of phones with images of padlocks on their screens

Unlocked phones have several advantages over locked phones.

Josh Miller/CNET

The length of time the phone is tied to each carrier varies, as do some other requirements attached to it.

On AT&T, you need to pay through the installment plan or pay your device off to be able to unlock it. Your device can not be reported as lost or stolen and you also can’t have a past-due balance on your wireless account. If you meet those requirements, you can request to unlock it at AT&T’s website here.

T-Mobile has similar terms to AT&T, such as making sure your phone balance is paid off, your account is in good standing and that the phone hasn’t been reported lost or stolen. You will also need to have been on T-Mobile’s network for 40 days. Once you meet those requirements, T-Mobile automatically unlocks your devices “within two business days.” More details can be found here.

Surprisingly, Verizon has the best unlock policy out of the three major providers. Thanks to some rules that were tied to wireless spectrum it acquired over a decade ago, the nation’s largest carrier will automatically remove locks on its devices after 60 days. You do not need to have paid off your installment plan, though if you do decide to switch carriers you will still be on the hook for paying off the balance of what is owed.

We should note that all three carriers have exceptions to their respective policies for deployed military personnel.

Will my phone work with other providers once unlocked?

Most recent major phones — including the Apple iPhone 14, Samsung Galaxy S22 and Google Pixel 6 lines — feature support for all major US carriers’ 4G LTE and 5G networks. All iPhones that Apple sells in the US, for example, will work with all three major operators’ networks regardless of which store or carrier you purchase it from.

That said, there may be some discrepancies based on the device you have. A T-Mobile, AT&T or even unlocked Google Pixel 6A will work with Verizon’s 4G LTE and 5G networks, though it will lack the ability to connect to its fastest millimeter-wave 5G network should you switch to Verizon and be in an area where that network is available (certain streets in major cities and areas of certain airports, arenas and stadiums).

This is because the Verizon version of this device features the necessary millimeter-wave hardware, while the other models do not (the Verizon variant is also $50 pricier).

These cases are increasingly less prevalent, particularly on the latest iPhones and Galaxy S devices, but it is worth keeping in mind if you’re planning to move around. Each carrier has set up pages on their respective websites for you to check that your phone will work with its service: AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon.

The first week of the NFL season is in the books. The best performance of the first week belongs to the Chiefs, who looked dominant against the Cardinals as Patrick Mahomes threw for five touchdowns and didn’t seem to miss a beat without Tyreek Hill. The Chargers kept pace in the AFC West by knocking off the Raiders, with Justin Herbert tossing three touchdowns. With two of the best QBs in the game, the Chiefs and Chargers can score points in bunches. They meet on Thursday Night Football on Amazon’s Prime Video in what looks to be the best matchup of the entire week 2 slate.

Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. ET (5:15 p.m. PT) tonight with the game streaming nationally on Prime Video and for free on Twitch. Here’s how to watch the Chiefs-Chargers game this evening, as well as the rest of the NFL season, without cable.

Thursday Night Football Streaming: Amazon Prime Video, Twitch and NFL Plus

In past years, Thursday Night Football games were shown on Prime Video but were also available on Fox or NFL Network. This year, starting in Week 2, the games on Thursday nights will be available nationally on Amazon’s platforms like Prime Video, giving NFL fans more incentive than free two-day shipping to sign up for an Amazon Prime account for $15 a month or $139 a year. You can also subscribe only to Prime Video for $9 a month.

While Amazon is adding a host of additional features for its Prime Video subscribers (including Alexa and X-Ray integration and alternative broadcasts), you don’t need Amazon Prime or Prime Video subscription to watch the game.

Fans in the local market of each team playing on Thursday night will be able to watch on an over-the-air (OTA) station, while those who don’t pay for either of Amazon’s services can watch for free on Prime Video’s Twitch channel (Twitch is also owned by Amazon).

If you subscribe to NFL Plus, the league’s $5 per month streaming service, you can also stream the game without subscribing to Prime or Prime Video. Note that NFL Plus viewing is limited to watching on just a phone or tablet, not on a computer or TV.

Can I watch Thursday Night Football on local TV?

You can. Front Office Sports’ A.J. Perez has put together a handy list of which local channels in which market will broadcast Thursday Night Football games when their respective teams are playing. For Week 2, that is KSHB 41 in Kansas City and KTTV 11 in Los Angeles.

Although the first Thursday night game was on NBC, as mentioned above the rest of the games for Thursday Night Football will be shown on Amazon’s Prime Video and Twitch platforms.

NFL RedZone shows every touchdown scored during the Sunday afternoon games each week.

Amazon Prime Video: $9

Thursday Night Football only

Thursday Night games, starting with Week 2, will be available only on Amazon Prime Video (plus the local TV stations in the market of each team playing). For millions of Amazon Prime subscribers, the Prime Video channel is already included at no extra cost. But if you’re not a subscriber, it might be worth it to shell out the $9 a month for the stand-alone TV service fee.

Sling TV Blue: $35

Note: This version of Sling TV does not include ESPN. For that, you’ll need to switch to the similarly priced Orange plan or go for the combined $50 per month Orange and Blue bundle. With the combined plan, RedZone is an extra $15 per month.

Hulu, Spotify and Showtime bundle for students

Save $22 a month

Beyond getting Hulu in the Verizon bundle, there are a few ways to save on Disney’s other streaming service.

Students will want to check out Spotify’s Premium Student offer which combines Spotify Premium, Hulu’s ad-supported plan and Showtime for $5 per month. All told, the bundle would save nearly $22 a month. You need to be a student above the age of 18 who is “enrolled at a US Title IV accredited college or university” to qualify, and Spotify works with a third party called SheerID to verify that you’re eligible.

You will need to verify eligibility every 12 months, with the offer available for a total of four years. Full details can be found at Spotify’s site.

Cable company Cox is also giving away the $5-a-month Peacock Premium subscription to those who have Cox Internet with a Contour TV Essential or higher plan. Those with Cox Internet and a subscription to Contour Stream Player or Contour TV Starter can “enjoy a limited-time preview” of Peacock Premium “at no additional cost.” Full details can be found on Cox’s site.

If you don’t have Cox or Comcast, you can get an annual Peacock subscription for either $50 a year for ad-supported Premium or $100 a year for ad-free Premium Plus.

Free year of Peacock Premium with ‘most’ Spectrum TV plans

Save $5 per month

Just like Comcast and Cox, Charter is giving some of its home TV users up to a year of free Peacock Premium. The cable company, which owns Spectrum, now includes the free year of service with “most” of its cable TV plans. (It says, “Offer availability and content availability may vary by region.”) Cord-cutters who only have Spectrum Internet will be able to get a free 90 days of Peacock Premium.

If you’re already paying for Peacock Premium you’ll need to cancel the billing on your account and sign back up by linking your Spectrum account. It’s also worth noting that after these 12 months are up, or 90 days for home internet users, you’ll be automatically billed the streaming service’s regular $5 per month rate unless you cancel.

This story is part of Focal Point iPhone 2022, CNET’s collection of news, tips and advice around Apple’s most popular product.

Apple’s new iPhone 14 models bring updates to their cameras, as well as the return of a larger Plus model and a focus on safety features like car-crash detection. These phones, which start at $799 (£849, AU$1,399), were announced at Apple’s “Far Out” event last week alongside the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max

Probably the biggest upgrade to the non-Pro iPhone 14 is the Plus model, bringing an iPhone with a 6.7-inch display at a lower $899 price. While this comes with the demise of the Mini option previously seen in the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 lines, it’s a substantial discount over the $1,099 starting price of the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Both the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus get a bunch of new features including a new SOS Emergency via Satellite service, a new video stabilization tool called action mode, an upgraded Cinematic mode and all the major iOS 16 features you’d expect.

The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus also work with the new Apple Watch Series 8 (three models) and the AirPods Pro 2 earbuds. We break down everything announced for the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, including their price, features, colors, release dates and more.

iPhone 14 and 14 Plus price and release date

Pricing for the iPhone 14 starts at $799 (£849, AU$1,399) for a 128GB version, the same as last year’s iPhone 13 when activated on a carrier plan. Preorders begin Sept. 9 and the phone goes on sale Sept. 16.

The iPhone 14 Plus, which also comes with 128GB of base storage, starts at $899 (£949, AU$1,579) and is available on Oct. 7 — you can also preorder it Sept. 9.

iPhone 14 colors you can buy (and one you can’t)

True to form, Apple will sell the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus in five colors:

  • Starlight
  • Midnight
  • Blue
  • Purple
  • Product Red

During the few minutes I got to try the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, I noticed that the purple color is more of a soft lavender color that shifts depending on the lighting it’s under. The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max come in a deep purple finish that shifts between a matte-black look under some lights to a rich deep purple like Prince.

iPhone 14 and 14 Plus features

At first glance, the new iPhone 14 might look just like the iPhone 13. Both iPhones feature outer casings similar to those of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models, which were released in 2020 and 2021, respectively. Apple also made a bunch of minor improvements and added new features. The iPhone 14 packs a 6.1-inch display, while the iPhone 14 Plus has a 6.7-inch screen.

The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus have the same A15 Bionic chip from last year’s iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max. Apple says the 14 and 14 Plus are 18% faster than the iPhone 13. Only the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will get the new A16 Bionic chip.

While Apple sold a smaller, Mini model of its main iPhone for the past two years, it did not introduce an iPhone 14 Mini on Wednesday. The iPhone 13 Mini remains on sale, starting at $599.

iPhone 14’s cameras get a new engine

In terms of photos and video, both phones feature a main camera with a larger updated 12-megapixel sensor and a wide-angle lens with a wider aperture that lets in more light. The iPhone 14’s cameras have a different method for processing photos called the Photonic Engine. The TrueDepth camera on the front gets a new, faster, f/1.9 aperture lens. Apple also added a new video stabilization mode, dubbed Action mode. It’s designed to keep your videos looking smooth even when you’re recording video while walking or moving around.

Apple’s Newest Releases

As rumored, Apple has removed the physical SIM card slot on the new iPhone 14 line. It also adds crash detection, a feature Apple focused on during its Apple Watch presentation, and a new satellite connectivity feature for use in emergencies. The satellite feature will launch in November and will be included for free for two years with the purchase of the iPhone 14.

In addition to the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, Apple introduced new iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max phones with an updated design that replaces the traditional notch with a new “Dynamic Island” layout for the front camera and Face ID sensor.

The latest Apple TV remote almost feels as perfect as it can be, with dedicated buttons and touch controls integrated together. It’s also slightly bigger than previous iterations, making it easier to hold and use without accidentally pressing things you didn’t mean to. However, there still isn’t a way to easily locate it if it goes missing in another room or in the couch.

Remotes get lost all the time — no matter the size. That’s why products like the Roku Remote Pro make it easy for you to find them again. Apple’s AirTag technology opened up tons of new possibilities when it comes to tracking down lost items. And though the new remote doesn’t include a built-in U1 chip to help you locate it, there’s an easy way to get the same benefit: Combine it with an AirTag.

There are plenty of cases for the Apple TV’s Siri Remote.

Eli Blumenthal/CNET

Rather than just relying on a piece of tape, a number of companies have filled in the hole that Apple left open. They’ve created new Siri Remote cases that allow you to place an AirTag inside.

We’ve tested four different options for people who never want to lose their remote again.

What you’ll need

106-apple-airtags-2021106-apple-airtags-2021

Sarah Tew/CNET
  • An Apple TV Siri remote.
  • An AirTag.
  • The Find My app on an iPhone, ideally an iPhone 11 or later so you can use Apple’s “precision finding feature” that points you exactly where to go.

Note: None of these cases came with an AirTag, so you’ll want to add $29 for that, on top of whichever case you buy for your $59 remote.

Eli Blumenthal/CNET

Elago R5 Locator Case

Best Siri remote with AirTag case

If you search for an Apple TV AirTags case on Amazon there are a number of very similar options, but few from any recognizable case brands. One exception we’ve found is Elago’s solution called the R5 Locator Case. The $15 accessory is a bit thicker than some other options, with the AirTag fully concealed in rubber as opposed to poking through a cutout on the back.

The rubber case covers nearly the entire body of the remote with the exception of the IR blaster at the top and Lightning port on the bottom. A wrist strap came preattached too, which was a nice touch.

While bulkier than some other solutions, Elago’s option felt more premium. The AirTag fits snugly inside the recessed circle cutout (but you may want to use two fingers to push it into that hole). Adding the Siri Remote on top was a breeze, and we were able to locate the combo quickly with the Find My app on an iPhone 12 Pro Max.

It was also easy to take out the remote and AirTag, which will be useful for replacing the latter’s user-replaceable battery.

$17 at Amazon

Though the Elago is the best option, there are others. The next two cases are generic options purchased on Amazon. While the brands and prices are different, the products themselves seem to be virtually identical — to the point where both came in the same style boxes from China with the same markings and branding despite being listed by different sellers.

Eli Blumenthal/CNET

2021 Remote Case for Apple Siri Remote (2nd gen)

Runner up

At nearly half the price of the “Abby’s” option below, this case — from Amazon seller “FUNDISINN” — features a thinner, but rigged design and was as easy to set up, locate and use.

The only difference between this and Abby’s is that this one is significantly cheaper, comes in more color options and that it came with a surprise Lightning cable (though I’d be wary of using it for charging iPhones as I doubt it is certified in Apple’s MFI program).

If you’re looking for a design like this, this cheaper option appears to be best.

$9 at Amazon

Beware: Abby’s Anti-Lost Case for AirTag ($23 on Amazon)

abby-apple-tvabby-apple-tv

Eli Blumenthal/CNET

Like our runner-up, we picked this Abby’s Anti-Lost case based on a regular Amazon search for cases that had Prime shipping. It too worked fine, with the AirTag and Siri Remote both slotting in pretty easily. No ports were blocked and like the “FUNDISINN,” it is a bit thinner than the Elago, though I did have some worry that over time the exposed AirTag might fall out of this case.

For a product that’s nearly the same as the one above, save your money and look elsewhere than Abby’s generic option

For DIY fans: 3D printed case (price varies)

3d-printed-apple-tv-case3d-printed-apple-tv-case

Eli Blumenthal/CNET

Our fourth case comes from CNET’s senior managing editor — and 3D printing enthusiast — Dan Ackerman. If you already have a 3D printer and spool, this could be the easiest and cheapest option with CAD files available online for you to assemble one yourself.

Ackerman says that the process didn’t take him “too long, because I didn’t change the design I found online, I just sliced and optimized it in a 3D program.” He adds that all told it was “maybe an hour for all the research and setup, two and a half hours to print.”

As with all 3D printing jobs, your mileage will vary on how many tries it will take to get this right. For our test, Ackerman says that the first print worked OK, though he didn’t have a remote on hand when he did the print. In using it, I found the case definitely feels more rigid than the rubber options and was a bit harder to insert and remove both the AirTag and remote. You may need some trial and error to get a more suitable fit.

It may not be the most polished solution out the gate, but for those looking to DIY a fix, it can work.

On the first Sunday of the NFL season, the Vikings beat the Packers, the Saints edged the Falcons and the Eagles held on against the Lions. In the AFC, the Chargers won against the Raiders, the Dolphins clipped the Patriots and the Steelers beat the Bengals in overtime in the craziest game of the day. In cross-conference action, the Chiefs looked dominant against the Cardinals, the Giants edged the Titans and the Browns squeaked by the Panthers on a last-second 58-yard field goal by their rookie kicker. On Sunday night, the Buccaneers topped the Cowboys.

Week 1 concludes tonight in Seattle with the Seahawks hosting the Broncos. After playing 10 years for the Seahawks, quarterback Russell Wilson will be on the opposing sidelines in his debut as a Denver Bronco. Taking over behind center for the Seahawks is Jets castoff Geno Smith.

After years calling games on Fox, Joe Buck and Troy Aikman will be in the booth this season for ESPN’s Monday Night Football broadcasts. And the Manning brothers are back with year 2 of the ManningCast, their alternative broadcast on ESPN2 and ESPN Plus. Brothers Peyton and Eli and assorted guests will call 10 Monday Night Football games this season, starting with week 1 in Seattle.

Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. ET (5:15 p.m. PT) on ESPN and ABC. Here’s how to watch tonight’s action, as well as the rest of the NFL season, without cable.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re an Apple purist or a lifelong Android user — to get the most out of your device you’ll need a good unlimited data plan. Unfortunately, finding the overall best unlimited plan can be a bit of a challenge. Unlike home internet service, where your options are often limited by your location, most people living in the US have their pick of all the major competitors and carriers. And with so many different options, it can be tricky to tell which ones are truly a good value — especially since carriers love to make bold claims about performance and coverage at different prices.

To help you narrow down the best unlimited data plans that are out there, I’m going to focus on the three major carriers — Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T — combing through the multiple postpaid unlimited plans available to find the ones that provide the most perks and value for single lines and for families of four.

Know your area

Before we get to the plans, to get the best deal you need to make sure you have the coverage that you need. This makes it very hard for us to give a blanket recommendation of any one carrier. T-Mobile’s service in New York may be excellent, but if you’re in rural Iowa, Verizon is more reliable.

While your mileage may vary, the good news is that these networks are growing and improving all the time, particularly as the three major players race to blanket the US with 5G. It’s quite possible that a decade ago you left a network complaining about its sparse service, but now it’s beefed itself up because of that race to acquire customers.

Now playing:
Watch this:

Best Budget Phone Plans in 2022 (and the Fine Print)

8:04

If you know any friends or family in your area that already use the carrier you’re considering, ask about their experience. You could also go to a carrier’s store and see if they offer any free ways to try out the service before switching over, such as T-Mobile’s Test Drive. Using Visible’s similar program, you can try out its parent company Verizon’s network.

Know your deals and discounts

One other thing to keep in mind: discounts. All of the carriers offer additional discounts that you could be eligible for, depending on your employer, military status, student status or age.

First responders, military members, veterans, nurses and teachers can get discounts on every major carrier. Verizon has discounts for students, while T-Mobile’s Work perk could knock 15% off the monthly price of a Magenta Max plan, with AT&T offering a similar program for its Unlimited Elite plan that it calls Signature. AT&T has also rolled out a new promotion for teachers that offers 25% off its latest unlimited plans.

If you’re 55 or older, you may also be eligible for a discounted plan: T-Mobile offers discounted plans nationwide for as low as $55 a month for two lines, and Verizon and AT&T offer similar options — but only for Florida residents. Now onto the picks.

Sarah Tew/CNET

T-Mobile Base Essentials: $45 for 1 line

Best for value for a single line

T-Mobile has added a new cheaper unlimited plan for those who don’t need three or more lines. Called Base Essentials, this plan has unlimited talk, text and data including 5G. While the data is unlimited, only the first 20GB each month are at high speed — if you go over that threshold, your speeds will slow to 1.5Mbps for the remainder of your billing period.

While perks like free Netflix or the bundling of taxes and fees into the sticker price are not included, you do get unlimited hotspot at “3G speeds,” a free year of Paramount Plus, and unlimited talk, text and 2G data in Mexico and Canada.

Priced at $5 less per month for a single line than AT&T’s Value Plus plan, this could be a solid option for those looking for a single line without frills. The carrier also allows for multiple lines of this plan, with two lines running $80 per month (if you need three or more you may want to look at one of T-Mobile’s other plans which could be cheaper thanks to various promotions the carrier regularly runs).

T-Mobile keeps this plan surprisingly hidden, but you can find it by heading to the “Plans” section of its website and clicking “See other plans.”

See at T-Mobile

James Martin/CNET

AT&T Value Plus Plan: $50 for 1 line

Runner-up for value on a single line

If you only need one line, AT&T’s new Value Plus plan could be the way to go. You get unlimited talk, text and data and 5G access. There are no perks like a free streaming service subscription or hotspot data and you will need to stick to one line.

But if all you need is a simple unlimited plan from your phone, this is $10 less than T-Mobile’s Essentials pricing, $15 cheaper than AT&T’s Unlimited Starter (with this plan including 3GB of hotspot data) not to mention $15 cheaper than Verizon’s Welcome Unlimited and $20 cheaper than Verizon’s 5G Start.

See at AT&T

Sarah Tew/CNET

T-Mobile Essentials: $60 for 1 line, $105 for 4 lines

Best for value (with multiple lines)

Those looking to save the most on unlimited service from the major carriers may be best with T-Mobile’s Essentials. Unlimited talk, text and data are included for all of the carrier’s base unlimited plans. In this price-focused comparison, T-Mobile’s option comes in at $60 for a single line, $5 a month cheaper than AT&T’s Unlimited Starter and $10 less than Verizon’s 5G Start.

In addition to being $5 less than AT&T’s option, T-Mobile’s Essentials includes unlimited mobile hotspot (albeit at slower “3G speeds”), giving you a little more flexibility. All three carriers offer 5G access with their base plans. We should note that Verizon’s 5G Start doesn’t support its fastest forms of 5G, but it’s unlikely you’ll be missing out on taking advantage of those speeds this early in 5G’s life cycle anyway. You can always reevaluate your options as Verizon and AT&T build out the latest updates to their respective 5G networks over the next two years.

The savings of T-Mobile’s plan also become more pronounced the more lines you add. Two lines of Essentials is $90 a month, while a similar offering from AT&T or Verizon runs $120 a month. Three lines will also run $90 at T-Mobile thanks to a promotion, compared to $135 monthly at AT&T or Verizon. The four-line option is $105 at T-Mobile, compared to $140 at the other carriers.

These prices do come with a couple of caveats: Unlike T-Mobile’s Magenta or Magenta Max plans, taxes and fees are not included in any of these prices, making the actual total a little higher. All the deals also require that you set up AutoPay and paperless billing.

Verizon Welcome Unlimited: $65 for 1 line, $120 for 4 lines

Runner-up for value (multiple lines)

Verizon’s answer to T-Mobile’s cheapest plans has arrived in the form of its Welcome Unlimited offering. There are no streaming perks like the Disney Bundle with this plan, no hotspot data, no discounts for device upgrades and you can’t hop on Verizon’s fastest 5G networks (what it calls Ultra Wideband). But you do get Verizon’s network for $120 per month for four lines (assuming you have automatic payments set up).

Compared with the competition, the Verizon plan is still $15 per month pricier than T-Mobile’s Essentials plan, but it’s $20 per month cheaper compared with AT&T’s most affordable Unlimited Starter plan and Verizon’s own 5G Start. Those looking to save even further can combine the Welcome plan with Verizon’s other discounts for teachers, nurses, military and first responders.

Verizon Play More: $80 for 1 line, $180 for 4 lines

Best for perks

If you’re looking for freebies with your wireless service, Verizon has one of the most aggressive bundles out there with its Play More plan ($80 a month for one line, $45 a month if you have four lines).

Verizon’s Play More plan includes unlimited talk, text and data and 25GB of higher-speed 5G and 4G LTE hotspot data. Among the perks are a free subscription to the Disney bundle (Disney Plus, ESPN Plus and Hulu) and either Apple Arcade or Google Play Pass.

All told, the perks quickly add up if you use any of these services. The Disney bundle normally runs $14 a month, and Apple Arcade and Google Play Pass each run $5.

That’s potentially $19 a month in services. Verizon offers these benefits as part of its Play More and Get More plans, but for most people, the Play More choice is the best fit. Get More runs an extra $10 a month ($90 a month for a single line, $220 a month for four lines) and adds an extra 25GB of high-speed hotspot data, 50% off a connected device (like a monthly plan for tablet or smartwatch) and 600GB of Verizon’s Cloud Storage. Get More also includes a subscription to Apple Music, normally $10 per month.

Something to note: These perks are often limited to one per account, so only one line on a family plan would qualify to open a Disney Plus account and get it covered by the carrier.

Verizon also lets you mix and match plans when you have multiple lines.

If you have four people on your family plan, only one needs to have Play More to get the perks for the whole family. The rest can be on the cheaper 5G Start, which would make four lines $140 a month as opposed to $180 a month if all four lines had Play More.

You can also combine these plans with Verizon’s other discounts for teachers, nurses, military and first responders to save a bit more.

T-Mobile Magenta & Magenta Max: $70 for 1 line, $140 for 4 lines

Runner-up for perks

T-Mobile is the runner-up for perks. Among the benefits are unlimited international data (albeit at slow “2G speeds”) when traveling in over 210 countries, an hour of in-flight Wi-Fi on a number of airlines, T-Mobile Tuesdays weekly giveaways and the bundling of Netflix’s $10 a month Basic plan (which is limited to watching on one screen at a time and without HD). It also now offers a free year of Apple TV Plus, a free year of Paramount Plus’ $5 per month Essentials plan and a free year of TelevisaUnivison’s ViX Plus.

Its pricier Magenta Max plan ($85 per month for one line, $170 per month for four lines) upgrades the Netflix subscription to the more popular $15.49-a-month Standard plan (which allows for HD streaming on up to two screens at once) and adds 5GB of high-speed international data and unlimited Wi-Fi on a host of flights including those from American, Alaska Airlines, Delta and United. Unlike its Essentials plans discussed earlier, T-Mobile also includes taxes and fees with the pricing of its Magenta and Magenta Max plans.

More about unlimited data plans and perks

AT&T’s unlimited plans no longer have much in the way of perks. The carrier used to offer a free subscription to HBO Max with its top Unlimited Elite offering ($85 for one line, $50 a month if you have four lines), but it got rid of the option in early June

It is also worth reiterating that carrier perks — like Verizon and the Disney bundle or T-Mobile’s offering of Netflix, Paramount Plus, ViX Plus and Apple TV Plus — are often limited to one subscription per account, not one for each line you have.

Unlimited data plans FAQs

Why get unlimited?

If you’re on T-Mobile, all of your plans are unlimited, and Verizon has gotten rid of the ability for new users to sign up for a shared data plan. Only AT&T still offers some tiered data plans.

Although everyone’s wireless needs are different, for most we think unlimited plans make the most sense, especially when it comes to choosing a new plan.

AT&T’s option isn’t great. It has a 4GB per line plan that runs $50 a month for one line ($160 for four lines). Each line here gets 4GB of data, but if you go over that threshold in a month you’re paying $10 for every 2GB. AT&T’s plan also does not include access to its 5G networks.

The company’s basic unlimited plan, called Unlimited Starter, is $65 a month for one line or $140 for four lines.

If you have one or two lines and don’t use a lot of data, you may be fine with one of these plans, though if you have just one line we’d recommend switching over to AT&T’s $50 per month Value Plus option we mentioned above or T-Mobile’s Base Essentials. Two lines of that T-Mobile plan runs $80 per month, which is $10 cheaper than two lines of AT&T’s 4GB plan and comes without the worry of navigating how much data you use.

For most people, we really do believe unlimited is the best choice when choosing a new plan.

Is unlimited data really unlimited?

It is, but the speeds you get may vary depending on your plan and how much data you use in a given month. Whereas in the past carriers would slow down or “throttle” your speeds if you pass a certain limit (usually over 22GB of data within a month) for the remainder of your billing cycle, today all three major providers say they’ll only do that in special cases.

To have your data slowed on most of the plans mentioned above, you will need to have:

1. Used over 50GB of data in a month.

2. Be in an area that is experiencing “congestion,” “heavy traffic” or if the network is “busy.” Examples of this could be at a sporting event or concert where there are tens of thousands of people in the same area uploading and sharing photos and videos.

All carriers say that in these cases your data should only be slowed “temporarily.” If you have an older unlimited plan, however, your threshold for when your data slows and how long it lasts may be different.

Is hotspot included?

A hotspot, or the ability to share your phone’s connection with other devices, will vary based on the plan you have. Some, like AT&T’s Value Plus and Verizon’s 5G Start, don’t include it at all while others — such as AT&T’s Unlimited Starter and T-Mobile’s Essentials and Magenta — offer limited amounts of high-speed access before capping your hotspot performance to “3G” or “2G” speeds.

In short, if hotspot access is important for you, check out a pricier unlimited plan such as T-Mobile’s Magenta Max (40GB of high-speed data); Verizon’s Play, Do or Get More (25GB of high-speed data on Play/Do, 50GB on Get More); or AT&T’s Unlimited Extra (15GB of high-speed data) or Unlimited Premium (50GB of high-speed data) options.

AT&T is in the process of rolling out a new 5G midband network, but you will in fact need a higher-end flagship device to use it. On Thursday the nation’s third-largest carrier walked back its pledge to upgrade older devices to support its newer 3.45GHz midband 5G.

Last month, AT&T had told CNET that it would be upgrading a host of its recent 5G devices — including 2020’s iPhone 12 series and 2021’s Samsung Galaxy S21, Google Pixel 6 and iPhone 13 lines — to support the 3.45GHz midband spectrum. The carrier spent over $9 billion acquiring the spectrum, which it plans to deploy alongside its C-band airwaves for a more robust nationwide 5G network that can better compete with T-Mobile’s and Verizon’s respective offerings.

Now it’s saying that capability will be once again limited just to a selection of 2022 (and newer) devices. Those with older but recent 5G phones and tablets will no longer be receiving updates or be able to connect to AT&T’s complete 5G footprint. “An inaccurate list of 3.45GHz compatible devices was provided by mistake and then incorrectly confirmed during the fact checking” of the earlier story, Jim Greer, AT&T’s assistant vice president of corporate communications, told CNET in a statement.

A new list provided by Greer reveals that the carrier’s compatibility right now is constrained just to some of its higher-end flagship phones and hotspots. These devices include:

Why this matters

Other AT&T devices not on that list will still be able to connect to the company’s 5G networks, including its C-band 5G that operates in a similar frequency. But the carrier is planning to use both 3.45GHz and C-band to create a stronger midband network nationwide, something those with incompatible phones won’t be able to experience.

Chris Sambar, AT&T’s executive vice president of network, previously told CNET that while not every cell site will have access to both 3.45GHz and C-band, the “majority” would get both frequencies.

Midband spectrum, like the 3.45GHz at issue here, is proving to be incredibly valuable. Although there are three different “flavors” of 5G (low-band, midband and the higher-frequency millimeter-wave), wireless service delivered over the midband spectrum offers the best combination of range and speed improvements. This is why all three major US operators have spent so much money acquiring and deploying network upgrades on these frequencies.

AT&T still sells a variety of older 5G phones, including the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, as well as Google’s Pixel 6 line, and continues to offer them on lengthy 36-month installment plans. It’s unclear if the carrier will explain to users looking to upgrade to those devices that they will not be able to connect to its full 5G network, or that they will need an iPhone 14 or recent high-end Samsung phone to be able to get a complete AT&T 5G experience for the three years of their installment plans.

The carrier told CNET on Friday that is providing information to its store teams about its 3.45GHz network and the devices that support it.
