Apple’s iOS 16 offers an impressive set of new features, but it marks the return of an old, much-missed feature, too: the battery life icon on the status bar. Most iPhones, including the new iPhone 14, sport the default feature, as do all iPads once you download the update. However, not all iPhones support the new battery icon feature, even if your phone is compatible with iOS 16.

According to an Apple support page published last Monday, the iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 13 Mini models don’t display the battery icon in the status bar. Instead, owners of these devices will have to continue checking battery status as they always have: by swiping down to the Control Center.

No word as to why those specific iPhones were left out. Apple didn’t respond to a request for comment on whether the battery icon will be available on the devices in the future.

Other exciting iOS 16 features, such as editing and unsending messages, customizable lock screens and verification that your AirPods are indeed AirPods, appear to be available on the iPhones that go left out of the battery icon update. 

The battery life display is set to default with the iOS 16 update, but if for some reason it’s not appearing on your iPhone (and you don’t have one of the models listed above), you can activate it under Settings > Battery, then turn on Battery Percentage.

Apple’s Beats headphones brand and Kim Kardashian have introduced three new nude colors for Fit Pro earbuds: Moon, Dune and Earth. 

Announced Tuesday, the new Fit Pro color collection — called Beats x Kim — features neutral, skin-toned colors and will be available to purchase Aug. 16 online at Apple or on Amazon. They go for $200, the same price as previous Fit Pro colors. As part of a special edition collection, the new colors will be available “while supplies last,” according to a Beats spokesperson. (Update, Aug. 16: They’re sold out at Apple.)

In a promotional video for the new line, Kardashian commented that she’d “never seen any tech products, especially headphones, be in neutral colors.” Recognizing the need for earbuds that would blend in with daily use and activity, Kardashian said, she teamed up with Beats to launch new colors reflective of her minimalist style. 

“I was just bringing my creative concept and my color palette to a brand that I’ve always respected and loved,” Kardashian said.

Aside from the color change, Beats x Kim earbuds come with the same functionality as other Fit Pro earbuds, including Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency and Adaptive EQ modes and spatial audio with dynamic head tracking. 

The earbuds are built with the Apple H1 chip, which allows for automatic switching between devices, audio sharing and hands-free “Hey Siri” assistance. That means the earbuds are most compatible with Apple devices, but owners of Android phones can also connect Fit Pro earbuds via the Beats companion app.

Twitch has launched beta testing for a new “built-in fundraising stream feature,” according to a Tuesday blog post from the streaming service. The feature, Twitch Charity, is designed to simplify the process of setting up a fundraising stream and collecting donations via Twitch.

Currently, Twitch Creators who wish to host a fundraising stream are required to track donations, convert Twitch currency and manage multiple apps at once, among other tasks. Twitch Charity will “address community feedback around difficulties tracking donations during a stream and the logistics of making donations afterward,” a Twitch spokesperson told CNET.

With Twitch Charity, the app will automatically track donations and process them through PayPal — currently a manual process for the creator. It’s not all just about the creator, however, as Twitch Charity “makes donating to a charity stream more intuitive with a ‘Donate to Charity’ button and providing receipts for donations.”

A select few Twitch account holders were invited to take part in the test, with nearly 200 charities represented on the current beta version, though Twitch said it intends to add more soon. In the meantime, Twitch creators can nominate charities they’d like to see added at Twitch Charity UserVoice.

In the blog post, Twitch also made a point to note that the company “does not take a cut of these donations or receive any tax incentives.”

Adobe is offering the web version of Photoshop for free starting with a pilot program in Canada, in an effort to make its photo-editing software accessible to more people. Photoshop’s free version will eventually open up more widely, The Verge reported Tuesday. 

An Adobe spokesperson confirmed the free, web-based version of Photoshop to CNET and added that “all editing features are available.” However, the service is reportedly described as “freemium,” suggesting some features may require a paid subscription or upgrade down the road.

The free version will include enough tools to “perform what Adobe considers to be Photoshop’s core functions,” according to The Verge. That’s a considerable improvement from Adobe’s previous web version of Photoshop, which allowed users and collaborators to do little more than share and comment on documents through a browser. 

Users will reportedly need to have an Adobe account, which is also free, to try out the no-cost version of Photoshop on the web. It’s unclear when free Photoshop will be available outside of Canada.

The browser version of Photoshop launched in a basic form last year, and Adobe has added features in updates since then.

Quarterly global shipments of wearable smart devices have declined for the first time ever, according to a Tuesday report by International Data Corporation. Overall shipments of smartwatches, earbuds, glasses and other wearables totaled roughly 105.3 million units in the first quarter of 2022, a 3% drop year over year. 

Xiaomi, Huawei and Samsung experienced the largest losses, with growth declining 23.8%, 10.8% and 9.9%, respectively. IDC attributed the declining interest to “cooling demand … following years of precipitous growth that were further amplified during the pandemic.”

Despite the overall year-over-year decline, Apple enjoyed gains of 6.6%, largely due to increased Apple Watch sales, while shipments of AirPods remained flat, IDC said. Imagine Marketing also saw growth, of 5.8%, thanks largely to its heavy presence in India, but total shipments were still behind Xaiomi, Huawei and Samsung. 

News of the decline in wearables shipments comes after the industry experienced record numbers in the first quarter just a year ago. In the first quarter of 2021, shipments totaled 108.6 million units (updated from the previously reported 104.6 million units), marking the best quarter ever for wearables and the first time shipments surpassed 100 million units. The 105.3 million shipments in the first quarter of 2022 show that the market may be plateauing, but the numbers still indicate a strong demand for wearable technology.

Waze said Tuesday that the navigation app has integrated Apple Music into its Waze Audio Player. The new integration allows users to access “90 million songs, tens of thousands of curated playlists, Apple Music Radio and more,” according to a blog post. 

Adding Apple Music to the Waze Audio Player enables drivers listen to music and receive navigation without having to switch between apps, limiting potential distractions inside the vehicle. Or as the Waze blog puts it, the Apple Music integration is so you can “keep your eyes on the road while enjoying the ride.”

To access Apple Music via the Waze app, tap the music note icon on the home screen. Apple Music should now show as an option if your phone is logged into an Apple Music account.

With the integration, Apple Music joins a number of other music services already compatible with the app, including YouTube Music, Spotify, Pandora and iHeartRadio. In addition to integrating music services into the app, other recent Waze updates have included an upgraded color palette, a new logo and a “Moods” feature that lets users show how they’re feeling about their travels.

Waze didn’t immediate respond to a request for additional comment.

Project Zero, an in-house team of Google experts and analysts tasked with finding advanced cybersecurity threats known as zero-day vulnerabilities and exploits, detected a record-breaking 58 in-the-wild exploits in 2021, according to a report from the team published Tuesday. 

A zero-day vulnerability refers to security flaws that developers have just become aware of, hence, they’ve “zero days” to fix or “patch” it. When gone undetected, such flaws could lead to data breaches and ransomware attacks. Last year, Microsoft warned users of zero-day vulnerabilities in Windows 10 and other software, including Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Office, before promptly issuing security update patches for more than 100 potential risks.

Since forming in 2014, Project Zero’s highest number of detected and disclosed zero-day exploits came in 2015 with a total of 28, less than half those detected in 2021. The contrast was even higher year over year, with only 20 zero-day exploits detected and disclosed in 2020.

The spike may indicate a growing trend of cyberattacks, which have risen during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the gaining popularity of cryptocurrency, but Project Zero says the likely culprit is improvements in detecting and reporting zero-day occurrences. The report stated that the vast majority of zero-day exploit uses are “similar to previous [and] publicly known vulnerabilities,” with only two events that stood out for its “technological sophistication” or logic. So, in spite of the increase in detected zero-days, your online security doesn’t appear to be in any more danger than previous years, at least when it comes to zero-day vulnerabilities.

That’s not to minimize the risk of zero-day vulnerabilities, however. Online security is still and always will be a concern for individuals and businesses. One way to protect yourself against malware and ransomware is to ensure your software is up to date — those patches and updates are released for a reason. Using a good VPN and antivirus software can also help keep your connection safe and secure. In the meantime, Project Zero will continue working towards their goal, which is to simply “make 0-day hard.”
