We know, your AirPods already came with a case that protects the earbuds during storage and charging. But AirPods cases are somewhat fragile themselves, which is why the case itself needs protection, too. Dropping your encased AirPods at the right angle can cause a crack in the case or an unwanted disassembly. Not to mention the unseemly scratches that accumulate when you drop your earbuds enough times.

Ultimately, it’s worth investing in a protective case for your AirPods to keep them in the best working condition. And you don’t have to spend a fortune for an AirPods Pro case that is both sleek and durable. Many still allow for wireless charging. If you’re looking for an extra layer of defense that will protect your earbuds without breaking the bank, we’ve got you covered. I’ve curated this collection of budget-friendly cases that you can scoop up for less than $15. Note that Apple has announced a new AirPods Pro 2 model, the case of which is different to the first-gen model.

Neotrixqi

NeotrixQI AirPods Case: $6

It’s billed as a waterproof case, though we wouldn’t take it scuba diving

The AirPods case is fairly rugged to begin with, so I don’t feel like you need to enclose it in a mil-spec-rated ruggedized case for safety — a thin layer of silicone should do. There are a lot of silicone cases like this one under $10 or so that include a dust cover for the charging port, let the LED shine through and have a loop for a metal carabiner, but this one is also resistant to water, which could come in handy at the beach or while standing over the sink.

$6 at Amazon

MOBOSI

Mobosi Military AirPods Case Cover: $12

It looks like something Seal Team 6 might use

In a sense, the Mobosi Military AirPods Case Cover is pretty typical — it’s a rubberized case that you slip over your AirPods wired or wireless charging case, and it comes with a secure mount for a detachable carabiner. But the gorgeous diagonal ribbing gives this case a military sort of vibe, and helps grippability at the same time.

Right now, this $12 case is available for 5% off when you click the coupon on the product page.

$12 at Amazon

Elago

Elago Mini Car AirPods Case: $15

It’s a shock-absorbent car with glow-in-the-dark headlights

Most cases are very functional — just impact-resistant sleeves for your AirPods case. But we need some whimsy in our lives, which is why I love this surprisingly detailed silicone mini car. The headlights and taillights glow in the dark, and the solid silicone material means it’s as shock-absorbent as Flubber. Despite its shape, it doesn’t interfere with wireless charging, either.

$15 at Amazon

Doboli

Doboli AirPods Pro Case Cover: $6

Because your AirPods Pro case needs some protection, too

Your AirPods Pro slide into this silicone case that’s available in over a dozen colors. The LED charging light is visible, the case doesn’t interfere with wireless charging and the whole thing is water-resistant. It also comes with a carabiner for securing it on the go.

$6 at Amazon

ZtotopCase

Ztotop Case for AirPods Pro: $9

This rigid case is ultra-shock-resistant (Update: Currently out of stock)

Most cases are soft, rubberized silicone, but the Ztotop Case for AirPods Pro is a combination of silicone and thermoplastic polyurethane, which results in an impact-resistant hard shell. The top of the cover uses adhesive to keep it attached to the hinged lid of the case, and it comes with a carabiner that attaches to a hard point on the case. It’s open on the bottom to allow wired charging, and it doesn’t interfere with wireless charging.

It’s no secret that Apple’s been busy rolling out a veritable network of services — from Apple Music to Apple TV Plus, and even its own news and fitness services. Even dedicated Apple fans might balk at subscribing to all of them, though, which would add $35 a month to your credit card bill. Well, here’s some relief for your wallet; right now at Best Buy you can nab free trials of all of Apple’s online services for as long as six months. Grab any one or all four — the only rule is that this is for new subscribers only.

Apple

Apple News Plus Free for 6 Months

You save $60

Apple News Plus is Apple’s digital newsstand for the Mac, iPhone and iPad. Regularly $10 a month, you can get a six-month trial absolutely free. (Apple usually offers a one-month-free trial.) The service gives you access to more than 300 magazines and newspapers, and articles are available for reading or in a podcast-like audio format. This deal is only valid for new subscribers.

Apple Music Free for 6 Months

You save $60

A significant competitor to Spotify, Apple Music lets you stream music directly to your Apple devices, choosing from a library of over 70 million songs. You can download tracks — up to 100,000 of them — for offline listening, and listen to live and on-demand radio stations hosted by popular artists. Regularly $10 a month, you can get as many as three months free from Apple — but this Best Buy deal doubles that and gives you six months for free. (New subscribers only, though.)

Vanessa Hand Orellana/CNET

Apple Fitness Plus Free for 3 Months

You save $30

If you have an Apple Watch, then Apple’s new Fitness Plus service is a no-brainer — so says CNET’s Vanessa Hand Orellana in her review of Apple Fitness Plus. The service offers guided workouts that stream from your iPhone, iPad or Apple TV and uses your Apple watch to display metrics to help you meet your fitness goals. It has 10 workouts to choose from and is friendly to beginners and experienced users alike. Regularly $10 a month, you can get three months free, or get an extra free month with the purchase of a new Apple Watch.

James Martin/CNET

Apple TV Plus Free for 3 Months

You save $15

Though it doesn’t have a back catalog of shows or movies, Apple TV Plus has made a name for itself thanks to its hit breakout originals like Ted Lasso and Severance. It’s one of our favorite streaming services available in 2022, and offers some nice premium features like 4K content, HDR support and the ability to download shows and movies for online viewing. It falls on the affordable side of things with a monthly cost of just $5, but new subscribers can get three month for free through Best Buy to try it out first.

Kindle Unlimited is that “other” service that Amazon operates — it’s a subscription service for ebooks, but it’s different from Prime Reading (which is included with Amazon Prime). The main difference? Kindle Unlimited gives you access to well over 1 million books (as opposed to just 1,000 with Prime Reading) and costs $10 per month. There’s never been a better time to try it out, because right now, you can get three months of Kindle Unlimited for just 99 cents. That’s a savings of $29.

See at Amazon

The service renews at its normal $10 monthly rate after that introductory offer, but you can cancel it at any time. (We previously highlighted a similar “two months for free” offer here as well.)

If you’re still not crystal-clear on the difference between Prime Reading and Kindle Unlimited, I hardly blame you. Here’s the deal: If you subscribe to Amazon Prime, you get Prime Reading thrown in as one of the many side benefits. Amazon has an ever-rotating library of 1,000 ebooks you can borrow from. You can check out up to 10 books at a time — to get an 11th book, you need to return one. Prime Reading includes magazines, comic books and more, and also includes books with Audible narration.

Kindle Unlimited is all of that. But instead of 1,000 titles, Kindle Unlimited has over a million, and that in a nutshell is why Amazon charges $10 per month for it. But that million titles is still just a fraction of all the books Amazon has on its virtual shelves, and you might be surprised to find that a lot of that million turns out not to be contemporary best-sellers, but self-published titles in the Kindle Direct publishing program. Of course, there are some contemporary titles in the Kindle Unlimited program, but don’t expect to be able to check out everything on the New York Times bestseller list, week in and week out.

So should you go for it? Well, it’s three months for a buck, so that seems like a slam dunk. You get 90 days to try out Kindle Unlimited and see if it’ll make sense for you at its full price. And if you change your mind thereafter, you can — again — cancel at any time.

Any AV expert will tell you: The single best investment you can make to improve your home theater is to upgrade from the TV’s integrated speakers to external, multichannel audio. Your TV’s tinny 10-watt speakers are abysmal, which explains why you have trouble understanding dialog when watching movies.

A soundbar is an inexpensive way to open up your soundstage, add deep bass from a subwoofer, and potentially even give you a premium audio experience with a dedicated center-channel speaker for dialog and surround speakers for more immersive audio. And right now, Woot is offering a 5.1-channel model that’s like a home theater in a box.

The Vizio V51-H6 is a 36-inch soundbar kit with four wired components: the soundbar, a pair of surround speakers and a subwoofer. The system has a 50Hz-20kHz frequency range and supports DTS Virtual:X surround sound. You can also control it with your voice using Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant. It’s “factory reconditioned,” which means it’s been inspected and returned to original retail condition by Vizio and features a 90-day Vizio warranty.

See it at Woot

Currently $180 on Amazon right now, this refurbished model on Woot is priced at $140.

This story is part of Father’s Day Gift Guide, featuring our top picks for dads who love tech.

Misplacing stuff — your wallet, car keys, TV remote, dog — is objectively terrible. And while you probably shouldn’t clip a Tile tracker to your pet (there are dedicated devices for exactly that purpose), Tile’s family of Bluetooth-powered locators can help you keep tabs on almost everything else.

Here’s a sweet little bundle: Get a Tile tracker four-pack (two Tile Mates and two Tile Slims) for $58 when you apply promo code CNETMSB at checkout.

See it at Daily Steals

This particular bundle lists for $75 and occasionally goes on sale at Amazon, but this is the lowest price we can recall seeing. You’ll get a pair of Tile Slims — which, true to their name, can slip inside a wallet — and a pair of the more keychain-friendly Tile Mates. The latter’s batteries are good for about a year and can easily be replaced. The Slim has a nonreplaceable battery, but Tile says it should last a formidable three years.

Tile trackers pair with your phone via Bluetooth, and you use the Tile app to locate a tracker (and whatever it’s attached to). If it’s your phone you need to find, you just double-tap the button on your Tile. It’ll make your phone ring even if it’s set to silent. You can also track your Tiles via voice using your Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant device — just say, “Alexa,” or “Hey, Google,” and then, “Ask Tile to find my keys,” and you should learn where they’ve crawled off to.

I’ve had pretty dodgy experiences with older, first-gen Bluetooth trackers, but modern Tile models are much more dependable. And $58 for this four-pack is a really good deal.

First published earlier this year. Updated with the latest deal.

So many phones have one signature gimmick — whether it’s a foldable screen, camera with zoom lens or lidar. But Nokia’s flagship Nokia 8.3 has so many selling points that I hardly know where to start. It’s Nokia’s affordably priced flagship ($700) with dual SIM slots, a respectable camera cluster and global 5G support. Right now, the price might be worth focusing on: Today only, and while supplies last, Best Buy is selling the Nokia 8.3 for $400. That’s just $20 more than the previous lowest price we’ve seen.

See it at Best Buy

That said, it’s the global phone capability that intrigues me. The Nokia 8.3 supports all the 5G bands in use around the world, so presumably you can take this anywhere (equipped with an appropriate plan, of course). To help out on that front, it also has dual SIM card slots, so you can hop off a plane and get access to a local wireless provider without losing access to your main number.

Read More: The Nokia 8.3 phone is all about 5G roaming

The phone also has a 6.8-inch bezel-free display with four cameras on the back — a standard zoom, close-up macro lens, super-wide-angle and depth sensor. And the Zeiss Cinematic Capture mode shoots in an ultrawide 21:9 aspect ratio.

Headphone jack holdouts will no doubt appreciate the 3.5mm jack, and you get a respectable 4,500-mAh battery under the hood as well. This $400 deal nets you an unlocked Nokia 8.3 with 128GB RAM. If you plan to globe-trot after getting your vaccine, you might want to grab this phone before the deal ends.

I’ve always been obsessed with remote controlled stuff. Cars, boats and planes — didn’t matter, I wanted them and generally didn’t get them. But one of the few nice thing about being a grown-up is getting to buy yourself the toys you didn’t get as a kid, especially when they go on sale. Case in point: This GoolRC 1/12 scale off-road buggy usually sells for $170, but while supplies last, Amazon seller RC Mall is offering it for 30% off. You can get the GoolRC Model # 124019 Off-Road Buggy for $119 when you apply promo code CNETCAR01 at checkout.

See it at Amazon

This is pretty much the car I fantasized about as a kid. It’s built on an aluminum chassis for strength with zinc alloy gears and an aluminum shock tower with real oil-filled shocks. The 2.4GHz radio has a 300-foot range and can tolerate multiple racers at the same time with cross-talk or interference. And there’s enough torque under the hood so it can drive across almost any terrain, including dirt, mud, rocky ground and sand.

And as much as I love drones and other toys that you can control with your smartphone, nothing beats a true pistol-grip RC remote control, and this car comes with exactly that.

There are several bundles on the product page — you can choose the car with one, two or three batteries. This promo code is valid only with the two-battery version, though, which gives you a hot-swappable spare when you take the car outdoors this summer. If there is one notable downside here, it’s that you only get about 10 minutes of runtime and the battery takes three hours to charge — so you’d definitely want the spare battery regardless.

I always envied that kid on my block who had a star projector in his room. I yearned to feel like I was falling asleep in a planetarium. And while I was an especially geeky astronomy nut as a kid, I am sure I was not alone. If you wanted one, or you just want to let your own kids explore the cosmos from their bed, here’s a versatile budget-priced model. The Tomshine Star Night Light Projector is usually $34.27, but right now (and while supplies last) you can get it for 30% off. You can get the Tomshine Star Projector for $24 when you apply promo code CNETSTAR01 at checkout.

See it at Amazon

The LED projector has four colored lights (red, green, blue and white) that can be combined 10 different ways for a variety of single color and multicolor patterns. You can also combine that with the projector’s ocean wave mode for more visual options. It includes a Bluetooth speaker and a USB port for directly inserting music via USB drive. The lights can sync with the music for an at-home laser light show.

You can control the music features and brightness control from its side panel, though the included remote also gives you access to the full range of visual effects.

It’s not going to replicate a Pink Floyd light show at the local planetarium, but it’s great for kids and can throw a little ambiance into the living room next Saturday night.

This article was published earlier this week. It has been updated with the latest deal.

The iPhone 12 Mini has everything the iPhone 12 has in a smaller size. There’s the OLED display, 5G wireless, IP68 rating for dust and water, MagSafe compatibility and other good features. And though it’s (relatively) affordable, starting at $699, right now Verizon is giving it away for free, which last I checked is a better deal. Specifically, you can get the Apple iPhone 12 Mini for free when you get it with a new line and Verizon’s unlimited plan.

See it at Verizon

Of course, this isn’t a slam dunk; you might not want to entangle yourself in an unlimited plan at a major carrier, and I wouldn’t blame you for that choice. But if this is attractive to you, you can buy the phone at full price and then Verizon credits your account for the phone over the course of 24 months.

If you would rather have more memory under the hood, the 128GB version adds $2.08 to your monthly bill and the 256GB phone is $6.25 per month. No matter which version you get, it’s available in six colors including the new purple finish.

Want to know more? Check out CNET’s full review of the iPhone 12 Mini, in which Patrick Holland called it “a one-handed phone user’s dream.”
