Googling your next potential hotel stay? The search giant will now serve up information on a hotel’s sustainability and health and safety programs right there in the search results.

The search knowledge panel, positioned on the right of the screen, shows hotel details if you scroll down below Maps and pricing. 

Health and safety information includes things that were introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, like enhanced cleaning of common areas, high-touch items being removed from common areas, physical distancing, hand sanitizer stations, disinfected key cards and no-contact check-in. 

Sustainability looks at a hotel’s energy efficiency and recycling programs, with categories like donating and composting excess food, serving responsibly sourced and organic food and local beverages, reusing towels, donating soaps and not using plastic straws.

These additions to the knowledge panel will start appearing on desktop searches Friday, Google said.

Apple has already issued an update for iOS 16 designed to patch several issues for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, 9to5Mac has reported.

Here are the full iOS 16.0.1 release notes, according to 9to5Mac, which has access to an iPhone 14 Pro on which the update appeared late Wednesday:

• “Fixes an issue with activation and migration during set up of iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro”
• “Photos may appear soft when zooming in landscape orientation on iPhone 14 Pro Max”
• “Enterprise single sign-on apps may fail to authenticate”

Some of those activation issues reportedly include problems receiving iMessages and FaceTime calls, conversations in iMessage showing up in multiple threads and sent iMessages appearing to come from the wrong account. 

iOS 16 was released on Monday. The first preorders of the iPhone 14 are set to arrive on Friday. iPhone 14 users will be prompted to set up their phones with iOS 16.0.1, according to the report.

Apple didn’t respond to a request for comment.

The Showtime app could be coming to an end, with a report Tuesday saying there are plans to make it accessible only via the Paramount Plus streaming app.

Currently, movie streaming service Showtime is available as a stand-alone app. But as of last month, you could already access Showtime content in Paramount Plus with a bundled discount rate of $8 per month, ad-supported, or $13 a month for the ad-free Premium Plan.

Plans to end Showtime’s app are still early, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing unnamed sources. 

Paramount Plus didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Apple’s new iPhone 14 lineup was unveiled last week, with preorders kicking off on Sept. 9 ahead of the Sept. 16 release.

But preorders of the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus are lower than preorders for the previous iPhone 13, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

“iPhone 14 and 14 Plus will be in stock on launch day, reflecting lackluster demand. As it stands now, the preorder result for iPhone 14 and 14 Plus is worse than iPhone SE 3 and iPhone 13 Mini,” Kuo wrote in a blog post Monday. “The iPhone 14 Plus is the replacement for the iPhone 13 Mini. However, this new product’s preorder result is significantly lower than expected, meaning Apple’s product segmentation strategy for standard models fails this year.”

As a result, shipment forecasts for November for the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus may be cut within weeks, the analyst predicted.

By contrast, a delivery time of more than four weeks for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max “may reflect good demand,” Kuo said. Delivery dates for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max slipped to October within hours of preorders opening.

Images of an early prototype of the rumored OnePlus 11 Pro have leaked online, OnLeaks in collaboration with SmartPrix reported Monday. The phone is slated to be released in 2023, according to the report.

The photos show a large circular photo casing on the rear of the phone, housing three camera lenses and a flash with Hasselblad branding. There’s also a visible alert slider — a feature that was removed for the OnePlus 10T. 

You can see images of the purported Android phone over on SmartPrix. OnePlus didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The OnePlus 10 Pro was released earlier this year, but with some carrier and network restrictions in the US.

Apple unveiled its second-generation AirPods Pro at its “Far Out” event Wednesday, and they included one big new detail: controls for adjusting volume right on the AirPods themselves.

The touch swipe controls on the stems have been added to the previous pinch controls, Apple said Wednesday. The new AirPods Pro also offer an improved six-hour battery life — up from four hours, plus the case can give you four more charges — and a precision location feature with a speaker on the case.

The wireless headphones are powered by Apple’s H2 chip, have improved sound and noise canceling and can be charged with the Apple Watch charger. The AirPods Pro 2 are priced at $249 (£249, AU$399) and will ship Sept. 23. Preorders for the AirPods Pro 2 start Sept. 9.

Apple also used the event to reveal its 2022 iPhone lineup: the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The new iPhones have longer battery life, improved cameras and emergency SOS via satellite. The Pro models will be powered by the A16 Bionic chip, the company’s highest performing smartphone processor yet, and they have the first iOS Always On display.

Apple is also moving fully toward virtual embedded SIM cards (or eSim), abandoning physical SIM cards altogether.

Beyond the AirPods Pro and iPhones, Apple announced the premium Apple Watch Ultra (designed for outdoor adventures), the Apple Watch Series 8 (the first model to come with a car crash detection feature, a temperature sensor that enables new ovulation tracking features, and impressive battery life), and the cheaper Apple Watch SE.

The Cupertino, California, company’s fall product launch event is always a major moment in the annual technology calendar. The iPhone remains a big seller, and it supports a tech ecosystem that includes services like iCloud and Apple Arcade and accessories such as AirPods and Apple Watches.

Google says it will spend $20 million on bringing computer science education to 11 million more students through local and national organizations. It’s an attempt to plug the “deep opportunity gaps” that prevent equal access to such education, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said in a blog post Thursday.

“At Google, we believe educational opportunities should be available regardless of socioeconomic status, background, race or geography,” Pichai wrote.

The $20 million pledge brings Google’s total to $240 million in funding for computer science education since 2004, according to the blog post.

The focus for this round of funding will be on “underserved students in major urban centers and rural communities” across New York, Chicago, Washington DC, Atlanta and Los Angeles.

Google is also pushing for adults to upskill themselves with new training in marginalized communities. The tech giant said it’s “building new financing models” for the Google Career Certificates program to help people “drive wage gains.”

New images of the upcoming Samsung foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4, appeared online Friday from phone leaker Evan Blass on 91Mobiles.

While we can’t see any details of the inner workings of the new phones, the images show the Fold 4 will come in three colors: black, gray and a creamy gold. The Flip 4 is shown in lavender, periwinkle blue, cream and black.

Samsung’s next large-format foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 4, is rumored to have a sleeker design and better cameras similar to those on the Galaxy S22, among other improvements like a double-sided fingerprint reader and Qualcomm’s newly announced Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor.

The rumored Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 was teased on Samsung’s invitation to its Unpacked event on Aug. 10, where it’s expected to unveil the two new foldable phones. The Flip 4 could come with a rotating camera lens and a 3,700-mAh battery, reports suggest.

The OnePlus 10T is launching at an in-person event in New York on Aug. 3, but OnePlus isn’t waiting until then to show off the details. In a post Monday, the company shared more on the phone’s design, including its battery and camera system.

The 10T will be available in two colors, which the company calls moonstone black and jade green with a matte finish. The phone’s new “crater design” merges the rear glass panel with the camera system.

Unlike all other OnePlus phones, the 10T won’t have the Alert Slider because it “provided us with the necessary space inside the device to add new, meaningful technologies” — like faster charging with two charging pumps, a bigger battery and better signal thanks to 15 antennas around the device.

The 10T will be the company’s second phone reveal this year, following the OnePlus 10 Pro in January.

Following a Next-Gen sweepstakes scheme that defrauded over 240,000 consumers, the US Federal Trade Commission is shelling out nearly $25 million in reimbursements to the victims.

The money, obtained in a settlement with the operators of the sweepstakes, is being repaid to 244,745 people across the globe via checks in the US and Canada, Mastercard debit cards in the UK and PayPal payments in 50 other countries, the FTC said Tuesday.

The deadline to cash checks or claim PayPal payments is Oct. 17. The Mastercard debit cards in the UK have a two-year usage period before expiring.

The sweepstakes scheme saw Kevin Brandes, William Graham, C. Floyd Anderson and their corporations send out mailers telling people they’d won a cash prize, sometimes as much as $2 million, in return for paying a fee of between $9 and $140, the FTC said. Many victims paid the fee multiple times before realizing it was a scam, according to the FTC, which charged Brandes and Anderson in 2018. The global scheme had been running since 2013 and affected many senior citizens, the agency said.

The FTC has since had its authority to seek refunds on behalf of consumers removed by a Supreme Court ruling in 2021. It has urged Congress to restore this authority.
