This story is part of Focal Point iPhone 2022, CNET’s collection of news, tips and advice around Apple’s most popular product.

Apple’s new iPhone 14 models, including the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, are available for preorder starting Friday, and some models are already seeing delivery estimates pushed out beyond the devices’ launch date on Sept. 16.

As of Friday morning, several models of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are already seeing delivery estimates in October, according to Apple’s website.

iPhone 14 Lineup: A Spec Comparison

While several models still offered the option to pick up a device on or shortly after Sept. 16 at an Apple retail store, the space black, silver and deep purple color options for the base 128GB iPhone 14 Pro all had delivery estimates of Oct. 3 or later. The gold color option had delivery estimates in late September. Some iPhone 14 Pro models in gold and deep purple with larger storage options were still available for delivery on Sept. 16.

Delivery estimates have also shifted to October for the iPhone 14 Pro Max, in all colors and storage options, with some showing dates as late as Oct. 17.

As of now, the iPhone 14 still appears to be available for delivery on launch day in all color and storage options, according to Apple’s website. The iPhone 14 Plus is also available to preorder starting Friday but won’t be available until Oct. 7.

Apple unveiled its iPhone 14 lineup during an event on Wednesday, where we also saw the Apple Watch Series 8Apple Watch UltraApple Watch SE and AirPods Pro 2nd generation

While prices vary across Apple’s new iPhone 14 lineup depending on the amount of storage, the iPhone 14 starts at $799, while the high-end iPhone 14 Pro Max starts at $1,099.

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max already being back-ordered doesn’t necessarily translate to high demand. It’s unclear how units of each iPhone 14 model Apple was able to build. It’s also possible some supply is being held back for release day sales.

Apple didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Meta Connect, the tech giant’s annual virtual reality conference, will take place on Oct. 11 this year, the company said on Tuesday. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the event in a Facebook post, saying simply “See you at Meta Connect on Oct 11.”

The site for the virtual event teases that people will be able to “discover how the metaverse is being built by many and why collaboration is the key to it all.” Meta said it’ll also offer a look at progress the company has made as well as at what’s to come in the near and far future.

At last year’s event, Zuckerberg revealed his company’s new name, Meta, a nod to its focus on building the metaverse. “This is the next chapter of our work, and, we believe, for the internet overall,” Zuckerberg said at the time.

Zuckerberg also teased Project Cambria, the company’s next virtual reality headset, which is expected to be more advanced and more expensive. In August, Zuckerberg said that the headset would come out in October and that more details would be revealed at Connect.

The virtual event will be livestreamed on the Reality Labs Facebook page at 7 a.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT on Oct. 11.

Netflix plans to launch its new ad-supported subscription option on Nov. 1 in multiple countries, Variety reported on Thursday, citing industry sources. The ad-supported tier will reportedly go live on Nov. 1 in countries including the US, Canada, UK, France and Germany.

The streaming giant is reportedly moving up its launch window to get ahead of the new ad-supported tier of Disney Plus, which will launch on Dec. 8. It was previously reported that Netflix’s new subscription option would roll out before the end of the year, though Bloomberg suggested a wider launch may come in early 2023.

Netflix with ads will reportedly cost between $7 and $9 per month, roughly half of the company’s current standard plan, which costs $15.50 a month. Ads won’t be shown during children’s shows, Bloomberg previously reported, and subscribers won’t be able to download content for offline viewing.

In April, after Netflix reported its first subscriber loss in a decade, co-CEO Reed Hastings revealed that the company was looking at a cheaper, ad-supported tier for Netflix after years of dismissing advertising. Netflix also plans to start charging for password sharing next year.

The changes come amid the so-called streaming wars, which has unleashed a wave of newer services — including Apple TV PlusDisney PlusHBO MaxPeacock and Paramount Plus — and options for consumers.

A Netflix spokesperson said the company is “still in the early days of deciding how to launch a lower priced, ad supported tier,” adding that “no decisions have been made.”

Apple’s iOS 15.6 is here and ready to be downloaded to your iPhone. The follow-up to iOS 15.5, released July 20, folds in bug fixes, a lengthy list of security updates and a new feature for watching live sports in the TV app.

With iOS 15.6, the TV app will now let you restart live sports games already in progress, as well as pause, rewind and fast-forward. This feature is also available in updates for the iPad and Mac computers.

Here are Apple’s iOS release notes:

iOS 15.6 includes enhancements, bug fixes and security updates.

  • TV app adds the option to restart a live sports game already in-progress and pause, rewind, or fast-forward
  • Fixes an issue where Settings may continue to display that device storage is full even if it is available
  • Fixes an issue that may cause braille devices to slow down or stop responding when navigating text in Mail
  • Fixes an issue in Safari where a tab may revert back to a previous page

This may be the last update to iOS 15 before the company’s next mobile software, iOS 16, gets a wide release alongside the heavily rumored iPhone 14. The next version of iOS, which is available now in public beta, will bring several new features, including the ability to edit and unsend messages, a new customizable lock screen, changes to notifications, as well as updates to Wallet and Apple Pay.

Apple also released iPadOS 15.6, MacOS 12.5, WatchOS 8.7 and TVOS 15.6. In addition to security updates, iPadOS 15.6 and MacOS 12.5 got the same TV app update for live sports as iOS 15.6, while WatchOS 8.7 brought bug fixes, and TVOS 15.6 got performance and stability improvements, according to Apple.

At its annual Slack Frontiers conference on Wednesday, the company said the new Huddles features aim to replicate the “energy and camaraderie” of working with colleagues in offices, while tackling the “new realities of work.”

Slack said Huddles will start as audio-only by default, but people will have the option to turn on video. The video feature will offer the option to blur backgrounds for people working from home or in need of more privacy. Another upcoming feature, multiple people will be able to simultaneously share their screen during a Huddle. People will also be able to “draw or use live cursors” on teammates’ shared screens to help “emphasize certain points or visuals,” Slack said.

In addition to video and screen sharing, Huddles will also get a new message thread feature to track everything shared in a huddle as well as emoji, effects and stickers to react to messages.

Slack said the new feature will be available in the fall.

On Wednesday, the company also announced the launch of GovSlack, a version of its office chat and collaboration tool designed for the “unique challenges” of government agencies. GovSlack, which was previewed in September, will be available in the US starting in July.

Apple on Wednesday highlighted research that says the iOS app economy now supports more than 2.2 million jobs in the US and is helping fuel success for small businesses. The two new pieces of research — one from economists it hired at Analysis Group and the other from the Progressive Policy Institute — come as Apple faces continued accusations that the power it wields over its App Store hurts competition and innovation.

While earnings for all developers on the app store grew over the past two years, small developers — defined as those earning up to $1 million a year with fewer than 1 million downloads — saw the most notable jump, according to the Analysis Group report, which was based on data provided by Apple. Total App Store earnings of small developers that were active in 2019 increased by 113% over the past two years, with small developers in the US seeing an increase of 118% since 2019, according to the report.

“More than 90% of developers on the App Store are considered small developers, and the App Store ecosystem continues to attract thousands of new small developers every year,” the study’s authors at Analysis Group wrote.

Apple and other tech giants face continued scrutiny over how much power they should have over their respective app stores and platforms. Lawmakers, regulators and developers have argued that Apple should loosen its restrictions, which don’t allow for alternative app stores or alternative payment systems for in-app purchases.

Apple has relaxed some rules amid regulatory pressure. Last month, the company began letting some “reader” apps, such as music and video streaming services, direct customers to their website outside the App Store to sign up for subscriptions.

Apple on Tuesday highlighted a handful of accessibility features that will be available on various iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch models later this year. The tech giant said the new features aim to help people with disabilities “navigate, connect, and get the most out of Apple products.”

The features that Apple previewed include Door Detection, Apple Watch Mirroring, Live Captions and expanded VoiceOver.

“At Apple, we design for accessibility from the ground up and we’re constantly innovating on behalf of our users,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook in a tweet on Tuesday.

Door Detection will let people who are blind or low vision use an iPhone or iPad to locate a door when arriving at a new place and find out how far they are from the door. The feature, which uses lidar, can also describe door attributes, such as whether it’s open or closed and what type of handle it has, and read information on and around the door like a room number. The feature will be available in Magnifier, Apple’s app to support people who are blind or have low vision, and will work on the iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max and newer iPad Pro models.

Apple Watch Mirroring aims to help people with physical and motor disabilities use the smartwatch’s features, like its blood oxygen sensor and heart rate monitoring, without having to to tap on its small display. Apple said Mirroring pairs with an iPhone and lets people use “assistive features like Voice Control and Switch Control, and use inputs including voice commands, sound actions, head tracking, or external Made for iPhone switches.”

In addition to Door Detection and Mirroring, Apple said it will bring Live Captions to the iPhone, iPad and Mac to help people follow along with audio and video on FaceTime, video conferencing apps, streaming media and more. It’ll be available in English in beta later this year on the iPhone 11 or later, iPads with A12 Bionic and Macs with Apple Silicon. Apple will also update its VoiceOver screen reader to support over 20 more languages, including Bengali, Bulgarian, Catalan, Ukrainian and Vietnamese.

The announcement comes ahead of Global Accessibility Awareness Day on Thursday.

Apple in recent months has been testing future iPhone models that replace the Lightning port with a USB-C connector, Bloomberg reported Friday, citing unnamed people with “knowledge of the situation.” The company is also reportedly working on an adapter that will let future USB-C iPhones use accessories designed for the Lightning connector.

The Bloomberg report comes after Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted in a May 11 tweet that USB-C could land on the iPhone 15 in 2023. Rumors have popped up over the past few years that Apple may drop the Lightning port on the iPhone in favor of USB-C, as the tech giant has been gradually shifting over to USB-C on many of its products.

“My latest survey indicates that 2H23 new iPhone will abandon Lightning port and switch to USB-C port,” Kuo tweeted, without offering specifics on the survey. He added that “USB-C could improve iPhone’s transfer and charging speed in hardware designs.”

(1/2)My latest survey indicates that 2H23 new iPhone will abandon Lightning port and switch to USB-C port. USB-C could improve iPhone’s transfer and charging speed in hardware designs, but the final spec details still depend on iOS support.

— 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) (@mingchikuo) May 11, 2022

Kuo’s timeline was seconded by Bloomberg, which reported that an iPhone with USB-C would come in 2023 at the earliest.

Apple didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Apple has been shifting over to USB-C on products such as MacBooks in 2015, iPad Pro in 2018, iPad Air in 2020 and iPad Mini in 2021. In an additional tweet on Sunday, Kuo said several other Apple accessories, including AirPods, Magic Keyboard and MagSafe Battery Pac, are expected to switch over to USB-C, but he didn’t offer a specific timeline.

USB-C is an industry standard that covers much of the electronics world, offering data transfers and letting people use one charger for multiple devices. With a power upgrade to 240 watts last year, people can also use USB-C to plug in devices like gaming laptops, docking stations and 4K monitors. European Union regulators have also been pushing for phone and other devices to include a common USB-C charging port

The upcoming iPhone 14, expected to be released later this year, will likely stick with the Lightning port. There have also been rumors of a completely portless iPhone, but it’s not clear when (or if) those will come true.
