Add this to the list of things that we didn’t get with the next-gen iPad: a fancy new name.

During today’s hour-plus-long launch event in San Francisco, Apple CEO Tim Cook and team unveiled details about the company’s new tablet, simply calling it the “new iPad” throughout. Given that we got an iPad 2 and iPhone 4/4S, I thought for sure (as did many observers, from journalists to pundits to consumers), that the company would follow suit and was just holding the product’s true name for a big reveal at the end of the presentation. But no, no, that’s not what happened.

Now, all things considered, the name might seem like a trivial point, but one has to stop and wonder what led to the naming decision.

Related stories

It could be as simple as the idea that Apple is going the MacBook Pro route and not assigning specific model numbers to its tablets anymore. Looking to the future, I suppose there isn’t anything sexy about calling your product the “iPad 7” and that just being called iPad makes it easy for Apple to make incremental updates without confusion.

Plus, there’s something to be said about going with a simple, recognizable moniker, because as we’ve seen before, assigning specific names to products can get complicated and a bit ridiculous. That said, there is a bit of confusion over whether the tablet’s actual name is “The New iPad” or if it’s just referred to as the new iPad or the third-generation iPad.

Maybe Apple learned a lesson from the name-related brouhaha that followed when it unveiled the iPhone 4S instead of the iPhone 5. Orrrrr, could it be that Apple just wanted to stick it to all those making a commotion over the new iPad’s name?

In the weeks and days leading up to today’s event, there was much talk about whether the next-gen iPad would be called the iPad HD or the iPad 3. Some even half-joked that it would be called the iPad 2S. So, did Apple get the last laugh by pulling a switcheroo at the last minute? I’m not really one for conspiracy theories, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned in my years covering the tech industry, it’s to never count anything out with Apple.

What do you guys think? And is Apple smart to go with this new naming scheme (you know, because it worked so well for Coke and New Coke)? Share your thoughts with us below. Also, be sure to check out Crave contributor Eric Mack’s amusing take on the new iPad name.

In addition to lowering its minimum requirements for building Windows Phones, Microsoft announced at Mobile World Congress today that it will add support for multiple attachments to SMS messages.

The new functionality is part of the upcoming Windows Phone 7.5 Tango update due out this spring and includes the option to attach numerous pictures, video, and audio notes to text messages.

Microsoft didn’t provide more specific details about the update release schedule but said the new lower-end phones, such as the Nokia Lumia 610, will come preloaded with the software update, while current Windows Phone 7 device owners will receive the update shortly after the lower-end phones ship.

Surfers, snowboaders, skaters, and action sports enthusiasts everywhere, there’s finally a smartphone just for you.

Sony has partnered up with action sportswear company Billabong to release a special edition model of the Xperia Active. The Billabong Edition features a special back cover and comes preloaded with exclusive screensavers, videos, and a Billabong Live app, which offers live streaming, as well as photos and news, of the company’s surf contests. In addition, you get a copy of the Billabong Surf Trip game.

Like the regular Xperia Active, the Billabong Edition has a dust-proof and water-resistant design with a 3-inch, 320×480-pixel touch screen that works even if your fingers are wet. Other fitness goodies include built-in ANT+ wireless technology for connecting to a compatible heart-rate monitor and an included armband. Don’t expect extreme power, though, as the Xperia Active ships running Android 2.3 Gingerbread and has a 1GHz processor and a 5-megapixel camera.

The Xperia Active Billabong Edition is available now in select markets, but pricing information was not available at the time of this writing.

Like Christmas decorations, invitations for CES events seem to come earlier and earlier every year, and Sprint is among to first to get its invite out the door.

The carrier just sent out save-the-dates for an “exclusive event” on January 10. It will follow Tuesday’s keynote address by Intel’s President and CEO Paul Otellini, but it’s unclear whether that’s on purpose. In fact, Sprint provides very little clues as to what it might unveil, but there seems to be a lot of reference to folded items and unfolding in the invite above.

I honestly have no idea what it could be. What do you guys think?

It’s been a while since AT&T has had a higher-end, QWERTY smartphone in its lineup, but keyboard-loving customers should start warming up their thumbs for the upcoming Samsung Captivate Glide.

Announced at CTIA 2011, the Captivate Glide sports a slider design that combines a 4-inch Super AMOLED touch screen with a four-row QWERTY keyboard. The Android Gingerbread device also rocks Nvidia’s 1GHz dual-core processor, an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p HD video support, a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera, and enterprise-friendly features.

Though the carrier has yet to announce a release date and pricing, we suspect that its launch is near. Meanwhile, Samsung dropped by CNET’s offices a little while ago to give us a preview of the Captivate Glide, as well as the Samsung DoubleTime, so be sure to check out our First Look video and hands-on photo gallery for a closer look.

AT&T’s newest Windows Phone Mango devices go on sale this Sunday, and the Samsung Focus S and Focus Flash are looking to be nice improvements over its predecessor.

Building on last year’s Samsung Focus, the Samsung Focus S and Samsung Focus Flash feature a faster 1.4GHz processor, Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, and support for AT&T’s HSPA+ network.

Of the two, the $199.99 Focus S is the higher-end handset, offering a larger and sharper 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, an 8-megapixel camera, and front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera. Meanwhile, the Focus Flash goes the budget-friendly route with an affordable price tag of $49.99 on contract and comes with a 3.7-inch Super AMOLED touch screen and 5-megapixel camera.

So should you go out this weekend and get one? Well, they’re facing some tough competition, as AT&T’s first 4G LTE smartphones and a couple of BlackBerrys also go on sale November 6.

Well, CNET’s Jessica Dolcourt checked out the Samsung Focus Flash and found that the Windows Phone device gives you a lot more for the price than you’d think. You can check out her full review here. CNET’s Maggie Reardon and Bridget Carey, along with our photographer Sarah Tew and videographer Richard Peterson, also got to spend some time with Focus S this week, so be sure to check out our First Look video and photo gallery for more.

A quick glance at today’s smartphones and it might seem like you’re staring into an endless sea of black slabs, but if you start to look a little closer, you’ll find some real beauties in the bunch.

In the list below, you’ll find some of favorite smartphones designs. These handsets stood out for a variety of reasons, from eye-catching displays to slim profiles to high-quality build materials. Of course, style is subjective and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so if you think there’s another smartphone that should get the nod, let us know in the comments section below.

Samsung Galaxy S II (T-Mobile)

We’ve been critical of Samsung in the past for its plasticky designs, but the Galaxy S II, T-Mobile’s version in particular, corrects some of those wrongs. Plus, the smartphone’s vibrant display is a head turner. Read the full review.

Apple iPhone 4S (Sprint)

It was definitely disappointing when we didn’t get a new design with the iPhone 4S, but the smartphone’s minimalist design stands the test of time. Read the full review.

HTC Rhyme (Verizon Wireless)

The HTC Rhyme is a bit of niche product, but one can still admire its compact and high-quality design. Plus, the phone’s deep purple color makes it stand out in a crowd. Read the full review.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc

We don’t see a lot of Sony Ericsson smartphones make it to a U.S. carrier, which is unfortunate because then you miss out on some great designs like the Xperia Arc. Read the full review.

Nokia Lumia 800

Nokia has always produced great hardware, so to see it paired up with some fresh software like Windows Phone makes us excited for what’s to come. Read our First Take.

T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide

For the keyboard-loving crowd, the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide offers a spacious QWERTY keyboard along with a sturdy construction and bright display. Read the full review.

After making the rounds to other carriers, the BlackBerry Bold 9900, BlackBerry Torch 9860, and BlackBerry Curve 9360 will finally make their way to AT&T in the coming days.

AT&T announced today that the Bold 9900 and Torch 9860 will be available starting November 6, and the good news is that the smartphones are priced more reasonably than their counterparts on competing providers. The Bold is priced at $199.99 with a two-year contract, and the Torch 9860 is set to go at $99.99 on contract. Meanwhile, the Curve 9360 goes on sale November 20 for $29.99.

All three phones run BlackBerry OS 7 and are compatible with AT&T’s HSPA+ network. The Bold 9900 offers a 2.8-inch 640×480-pixel touch screen and full QWERTY keyboard; the Torch 9860 goes with an all touch-screen design. Both have a 1.2GHz processor and a 5-megapixel camera with 720p HD video-recording capabilities.

The Curve 9360 is more of an entry-level model and features a 2.44-inch, 480×360-pixel nontouch display, an 800MHz processor, and a 5-megapixel camera. A cameraless version will also be offered by AT&T.

Though BlackBerry fans are sure to be thrilled, the smartphones are facing stiff competition, as AT&T’s first 4G LTE handsets, the Samsung Galaxy S II and HTC Vivid, are also set to launch November 6.

November 6 is shaping up to be a big day for AT&T, as the carrier will release its first 4G LTE smartphones and expand its LTE network to nine additional markets on that day.

When it comes to devices, customers will be able to choose from the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket or the HTC Vivid, both of which are compatible with AT&T’s HSPA+ and LTE networks and run Android Gingerbread.

The Galaxy S II Skyrocket features a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus (800×480 pixels) touch screen, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and 16GB of internal memory, with an expansion slot. It has an 8-megapixel camera capable of 1080p HD video capture and a front-facing 2-megapixel camera. Pricing for the Skyrocket is $249.99 with a two-year contract.

The HTC Vivid costs slightly less. For $199.99 on contract, the smartphone offers a 4.5-inch qHD (540×960 pixels) touch screen a 1.2GHz dual-core processor. It also has an 8-megapixel camera, along with a f2.2 28mm lens for better low-light performance, and 16GB of internal memory with expansion capabilities.

Data plans start at $15 per month for the DataPlus plan, which gets you 200MB of data. You can get an additional 200MB of data for $15. For heavy data users, you can choose the DataPro plan, which offers 2GB of data for $25 per month, with the option to purchase another 1GB of data for $10.

In addition to the smartphones, November 6 will also be the day that AT&T’s LTE network will light up in Boston, Washington D.C., Baltimore, and Athens, Ga. AT&T first launched its LTE network on September 18 in five markets–Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio–and plans to reach 15 markets and 70 million Americans by the end of the year.
