The Global Estimates of Modern Slavery published by the International Labour Organization (ILO), International Organization for Migration (IOM) and international human rights group Walk Free showed that some 50 million people lived in modern slavery on any given day in 2021.

10 million increase form 2016

This, according to the report is nearly 10 million more than figures in 2016, when the previous study was conducted.

The report noted that modern slavery occurs in almost every country in the world, and cuts across ethnic, cultural and religious lines.

Out of the 50 million people who are living in modern slavery, 27.6 million are victims of forced labour, while 22 million are forced marriages.

At 86 per cent, most cases of forced labour are found in the private sector, the report said.

Forced labour in sectors other than commercial sexual exploitation accounts for 63 per cent of all forced labour, while forced commercial sexual exploitation represents 23 per cent of all forced labour, it said.

Women, children most exploited 

Almost four out of five of those in forced commercial sexual exploitation are women or girls, it said.

State-imposed forced labour accounts for 14 per cent of people in forced labour.

Almost one in eight of all those in forced labour are children (3.3 million).

More than half of these are in commercial sexual exploitation.

Migrant workers are more than three times more likely to be in forced labour than non-migrant adult workers.

22 million living in forced marriages

The study noted that the number of forced marriages went up by 6.6 million from 2016.

“The true incidence of forced marriage, particularly involving children aged 16 and younger, is likely far greater than current estimates can capture; these are based on a narrow definition and do not include all child marriages. Child marriages are considered to be forced because a child cannot legally give consent to marry,” it said.

It added that forced marriage is closely linked to long-established patriarchal attitudes and practices and is highly context-specific.

The overwhelming majority of forced marriages (more than 85 per cent) was driven by family pressure.

Although two-thirds (65 per cent) of forced marriages are found in Asia and the Pacific, when regional population size is considered, the prevalence is highest in the Arab States, with 4.8 people out of every 1,000 in the region in forced marriage.

No bonded labour in India: SC

Last week the Supreme Court of India had said that there are no bonded labourers in the country and that there is a racket running on the pretext of bonded labour.

“Do you know who are bonded labourers? They are not bonded. They take money and come there and are engaged by brick kilns. They come from backward areas. They take money and eat the money and then resign. This is a racket. These labourers only take advantage of this bonded labourer thing,” Justice Hemant Gupta had said.

Bomb threat spreads panic in Leela Hotel

The Leela Hotel in Ambience Mall received a call at around 11:05 about a bomb being placed there.

The hotel alerted the police who dispatched bomb disposal and dog squads to search for the explosives.

Nothing suspicious found

The hotel was also evacuated and after nearly two hours of search, nothing suspicious was found there.

Following this, the police concluded that the call was a hoax and traced it to the hospital in Gurugram’s Sector 47.

“Nothing suspicious was found in the hotel premises and the call was a hoax,” said Virender Vij, DCP, east.

The guests were allowed back in after the search was over and when no bomb was found, police said.

How the caller was traced down

A senior police officer said that the mobile used in making the call was found switched off when they tried to call back.

Later in a video statement issued to the media, Vikas Kaushik, ACP, DLF, said the man, a “special child”, made the hoax call in anger after he was refused the chocolate he was promised by his teacher.

“We have verified his status with doctors and counsellors. He is a special child, who called the hotel in anger when he was refused the chocolate promised by his teacher,” Kaushik said.

Though an FIR was registered under section 507 (criminal intimidation by anonymous communication) of the IPC at DLF Phase-3 Police Station on the complaint of Varun Chhibber, the general manager of the Leela Hotel Ambience Mall, no action has been taken against the caller due to his condition.

How to deal with flooded cars

While owners may be eager to check on the condition of their cars, experts say that people should proceed with caution.

What official figures say

According to official statistics, 85 regions and 2,000 houses in Bengaluru have been inundated due to heavy rain. A total of 1,500 sheds have also come under water, forcing the labourers to shift to safer places. 22,000 vehicles have been damaged and 30 apartments have been surrounded by flood water.

The two zones in Bengaluru’s East, Mahadevapura and Bommanahalli, which house major IT companies, have been affected the most.

How he was caught

Chauhan was arrested in Delhi after receiving information about his arrival in Delhi by Special Staff under the jurisdiction of Deshbandhu road police station. One illegal country-made pistol, two live cartridges, and one stolen motorcycle were recovered from him.

During the investigation, five more country-made pistols and a stolen car were recovered from him.

The official said that he came to Delhi to deliver arms in a stolen car. 

According to police, Chauhan had been previously arrested twice in his 27 years of criminal history.

Stolen cars sold in NE, Nepal

Chauhan used to steal cars from across the country and sell them in the North East and Nepal.

“Chauhan used to steal cars and would sell them in Assam and northeast India. He gave the cops a slip on many occasions. When Delhi Police started working on him, he got a whip and fled to Assam. There he started smuggling horns of rhinoceros,” a senior Police official said.

Though he has been accused of over 5,000 vehicle thefte and is considered as the country’s biggest car thief, police said on the record that they could find only around 200 cases against him as of now.

He had three wives

The official said that the accused had acquired a lot of wealth which was seized by the ED.

In 2015, he was held by Assam Police along with a local MLA. After this, he again got indulged in vehicle stealing and also started smuggling arms.

The accused was also a Class-I contractor in the Assam government.

States that saw most murders

Among the top five states reporting murders were Uttar Pradesh (3,717 cases, 3,825 people), Bihar (2,799 cases, 2,826 people), Maharashtra (2,330 cases, 2,381 people), Madhya Pradesh (2,034 cases, 2075 people) and West Bengal (1,884 cases, 1,919 people), it showed.

Delhi recorded 459 cases in which 478 people were murdered, according to the NCRB figures.

Dispute biggest reason for murder

‘Disputes’ (9,765 cases) were the motive in the highest number of murder cases in 2021 followed by ‘personal vendetta or enmity’ (3,782 cases) and ‘gain’ (1,692 cases), according to the annual report.

However, the rate of murder (per lakh population) was highest in Jharkhand at 4.1 (1,573 cases, 1,606 people) followed by Andaman and Nicobar Islands at 4 (16 cases, 18 people), the data showed. Delhi had a crime rate of 2.2 for murder.

Increase in suicide cases

The NCRB data also showed that a total of 1,64,033 suicides were reported in India in 2021 — a 7.2-per cent increase from 1,53,052 in 2020.

Maharashtra reported the highest number of suicides among all the states in the country, followed by Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh, in 2021, a year that saw 1,64,033 such cases across India.

“Majority of suicides were reported in Maharashtra (22,207), followed by 18,925 suicides in Tamil Nadu, 14,965 suicides in Madhya Pradesh, 13,500 suicides in West Bengal and 13,056 suicides in Karnataka, accounting for 13.5 per cent, 11.5 per cent, 9.1 per cent, 8.2 per cent and 8 per cent of total suicides respectively,” the report said.

These five states together accounted for 50.4 per cent of the suicides reported in the country. The remaining 49.6 per cent of cases were reported from the 23 other states and eight Union territories.

Reasons for suicide

Professional or career-related problems, a sense of isolation, abuse, violence, family problems, mental disorders, addiction to alcohol, financial loss and chronic pain are the main reasons behind incidents of suicide in the country, data showed.

It also showed that as many as 45,026 females died of suicide in 2021, out of which more than half were housewives.

“Of females who committed suicides, the highest number (23,178) was of house-wives followed by students (5,693) and daily wage earners (4,246),” the report said.

People call out bigoted behaviour 

Swiggy has not publicly responded to the post yet, however, many Twitter users called out the outrageous demand and suggested that such customers should be banned from the platform.

Not the first time

Sadly this is not the first time, and in all likelihood, not the last time, food delivery executives who are just delivering customer orders have been discriminated against for their religion.

In October 2019, Ajay Kumar, a Swiggy customer from Hyderabad had refused to receive his food order because the delivery executive was a Muslim.

According to Kumar, he had given specific instructions to the Swiggy app saying, “Very less spicy. And, please select a Hindu delivery person. All ratings will be based on this.”

Despite this, when he learned that the delivery executive’s name is Mudassir Omar, Kumar refused to accept the food and agreed to pay Rs 95 as cancelation charges for the order.

Food has no religion

In August 2019, Zomato too had faced a similar demand when a person named Amit Shukla from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh cancelled his food order because the food delivery executive was a Muslim. 

“Just cancelled an order on @ZomatoIN they allocated a non-Hindu rider for my food they said they can’t change rider and can’t refund on cancellation I said you can’t force me to take a delivery I don’t want don’t refund just cancel,” he wrote on Twitter.

Zomato responded to the customers saying ‘Food has no religion’.

Zomato’s founder Deepinder Goyal also echoed his company’s stand and said that “we aren’t sorry to lose any business that comes in the way of our values.”

Want to study in co-ed school

One of the new joinees, who studied till Class X at a girls-only school said she wanted to study in a co-ed system.

“Not in favour of how gender is being construed or taught in society presently. We are supposed to be studying together. So I came here to study like that,” she said.

The parents of a girl student told the media that their daughter had expressed her wish to study along with boys in the school and therefore, they admitted her there.

Co-ed school became boys only after division

The school which was established in 1819 had started out as a co-ed institution, but due to an increase in the number of pupils over the years, it was split into three separate schools for boys, girls, and another in Tamil medium.

However, after the Kerala government’s move to encourage gender neutrality in schools, which also gave an option to boy/girls only institutions to become co-eds, the PTA approached Education Minister V Sivankutty for the same.

And from the current academic year, starting with higher secondary, the school will be open for both boys and girls.

No more boys/girls only schools in Kerala

Last month, the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights recommended that boys-only and girls-only schools in the state should be converted into co-education from the 2023-24 academic year.

According to official figures, there were 280 girls’ schools and 164 boys’ schools in the state.

The Commission has recommended that all these schools, be it government, private, or aided should switch to a co-education system from next year.

Education Minister V Sivankutty had said that 11 single-gender schools in government and aided sectors were converted into co-education ones in the past year.

If the school authorities, PTA, and local bodies concerned takes a collective decision and demand the conversion of single-gender schools to co-ed schools, the government would give consent,” the minister said.

Earlier this week, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the government was not forcing gender-neutral school uniforms and that it was the prerogative of the educational institutions to decide what kind of uniforms girls and boys should wear.

The case

The appeal was filed by one Narayanan, who was convicted by a Sessions Court for penetrative sexual assault on three girl children (one of whom was a three-year-old) and sexually assaulting two boy children.

He was found guilty under Section 3 (a) read with 5(m) read with 6 (5 counts) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.

What the convict argued

In his appeal Narayanan argued that the children were tutored, the parents of the children had a grudge against him and had falsely implicated him. He also contended that there was undue delay in lodging the police complaint and argued that doctors who examined the children concluded that there was no sign of any sexual assault on them.

Court upholds the conviction

The court, however rejected the arguments and noted that the children had stood by their statement in court during cross examination.

The court also pointed out that parents of the victim had in fact informed the appellant’s son about the misdeeds of his father and when there was no action, had informed the elders of the village, who dismissed it saying they could not ask such “delicate things” to him.

The court further said that mere absence of physical injury does not rule out the sexual acts.

In a related development on Friday, the Kerala high court directed CBSE and the state government to issue necessary and appropriate orders making it mandatory for every school in the state to include a prevention-oriented programme on sexual abuse as a mandatory part of the curriculum.

With this technology, passengers’ entry would be automatically processed based on the facial recognition system at all checkpoints, including entry into the airport, security check areas, and aircraft boarding, etc.

The technology will make the boarding process significantly faster and more seamless as each passenger would need less than three seconds at every touchpoint. Their faces would act as their documents, like ID proof, and vaccine proof, and also act as a boarding pass.

It will also ensure enhanced security at the airport as the passenger data is validated with the Airlines Departure Control System, thereby only designated passengers can only enter the terminal. Made in India gun used for the first time

The indigenous howitzer gun was used alongside the traditional British-origin ’25 Pounders’ artillery guns.

So far only British-made guns were used for the ceremonial salute.
