Just a month after announcing artificial intelligence integration with its search engine Bing and browser Edge, Microsoft is introducing Microsoft 365 Copilot, a tool that’ll work with you in its collection of apps including Excel, PowerPoint, Word and more. In a blog post on Thursday, Microsoft said the new AI tool will increase creativity and productivity.

“Copilot gives you a first draft to edit and iterate on — saving hours in writing, sourcing, and editing time. Sometimes Copilot will be right, other times usefully wrong — but it will always put you further ahead,” Jared Spataro, an executive vice president at Microsoft, wrote of how the tool will work in Word. 

Generative AI technologies can create drafts of documents or emails that are useful, but they’re also prone to problems like “hallucinations,” fabricated responses that sound plausible but are inaccurate.

The Microsoft 365 Copilot can also create PowerPoint presentations and Excel data visualization with a prompt, Spataro wrote. It’ll also draft email responses and summarize long email threads in Outlook.

Microsoft 365 copilot is currently being tested by 20 partners, though it’ll be available “more broadly in the coming months,” Microsoft said in a separate blog post.

The tech giant also announced Business Chat, which uses AI across your Microsoft apps to aggregate information and return it in response to a written prompt.

When it unveiled the new Bing in February, Microsoft promised to integrate AI into more of its products. The company is among a number of businesses racing to bring new AI capabilities to its services. Google earlier this week said it’s adding AI tools to its Workspace apps, including generative writing features in Gmail and Docs. Facebook parent Meta is experimenting with AI-powered chat on WhatsApp and Messenger, and Grammarly is launching an AI feature to craft email messages, social media posts and more.

The ability to use AI to summarize or synthesize within commonly used apps could have significant impacts on workflow, Rowan Curran, an analyst at Forrester, said in an email to CNET.

“Having capabilities to generate a summarization of a white paper into a blog post and the ability to do it within your core productivity app reduces the friction around integrating these tools into workflows, because the user doesn’t have to go to a different tool to use them,” he wrote.

On Tuesday, Microsoft confirmed that Bing is using OpenAI’s GPT-4 technology.

Adobe is acquiring Figma, a leading web design platform, for $20 billion in stock and cash, the company said Thursday. Adobe touted Figma’s widely used collaborative design tools in its announcement. Figma had been the strongest competitor for Adobe’s own web design tool, Adobe XD.

Figma will continue to operate autonomously while also having ways to accelerate its growth, Figma CEO Dylan Field said in a blog post Thursday. 

“We will have the opportunity to incorporate their expertise in imaging, photography, illustration, video, 3D and font technology to the Figma platform,” Field said. Figma will continue to be free for educational uses.

The transaction is expected to close in 2023, pending approval from regulators and Figma’s shareholders.

The same day that Apple launched its new iPhone, Tim Cook said that, if you want to be able to text seamlessly with an Android-wielding parent, you should “buy your mom an iPhone” — adding that he doesn’t “hear our users asking that we put a lot of energy on that at this point.” The comments came at Vox Media’s Code 2022 conference on Wednesday, hot on the heels of Apple announcing its new iPhone 14 line at its fall event.

Nearly a month ago, Google launched a public website asking Apple to adopt RCS technology, amping up the public pressure on the company to do so. The RCS texting standard would replace the SMS and MMS and, if adopted across both iPhone and Android, create a smoother texting experience across the two systems. Google says over half a billion people use RCS, which gives users features similar to iMessage on Apple: typing indicators, encryption, and higher-quality video and photo texting.

The brief exchange over RCS (in which Cook also told the questioner, “I’d love to convert you to an iPhone”) came at the end of wider discussion with Apple’s former lead product designer, Jony Ive, and Steve Jobs’ widow, Laurene Powell Jobs, about Jobs’ legacy and plans for an online Steve Jobs archive.

Apple didn’t immediately respond to a request for additional comment.

Apple’s next iPhone may have a new-look cutout on its screen for its cameras and privacy indicators, various outlets are reporting. The design is expected to be revealed at next week’s Apple event. 

The iPhone 14 Pro is rumored to have two camera cutouts. The screen between them is now rumored to be blacked out when the phone is turned on, creating the appearance of one pill-shaped cutout. The blacked-out space will house privacy indicators that alert users when an app is using the camera or microphone, 9to5Mac reported.

The new iPhone is likely to be the highlight of this month’s event. Rumors about the iPhone’s size, selfie camera and appearance have been popping up as the event nears.

Apple’s fall event will take place Sept. 7. Besides the new iPhones, Apple could announce its first Apple Watch Pro, with greater health monitoring abilities, a larger screen and a longer battery life.

Apple didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Shipments of PCs and tablets will decline in 2022, and again in 2023, before starting to grow again, market researcher IDC said in a forecast released Thursday. IDC expects PC shipments to decline 12.8% and tablet shipments to decline 6.8% this year. It expects a decline of another 2.6% in 2023 across the two categories before shipments begin to increase again in 2024.

“Inflation, a weakening global economy, and the surge in buying over the past two years are the leading causes for the reduced outlook,” according to IDC’s report.

Shipments have been down this year already. In July, IDC reported that second quarter shipments of PCs were down 15.3% compared to the second quarter of 2021. In 2021, PC shipments reached their highest levels in 10 years. Despite the decrease this year, shipments are still above pre-pandemic levels.

IDC counts desktop computers, notebooks and workstations as PCs.

Waze will begin shutting down Waze Carpool, the ride-sharing cousin of real-time traffic and navigation app Waze, in September, the company said in a statement shared with CNET on Thursday. After the pandemic upended commuting patterns, or eliminated commutes altogether, Waze is shifting its focus.

“While Waze was predominantly a commuting app pre-COVID, today the proportion of errands and travel drives have surpassed commutes,” Waze said in its statement. The decline in commuting comes even as Americans are driving 5% to 15% more miles than they did before the pandemic, Waze said. 

Waze Carpool expanded nationwide in 2018, less than a year and a half before COVID-19 sent workers home and curtailed driving.

Cutting Waze Carpool would allow the company to make “real-world impact by doubling down on helping cities address mobility problems such as congestion, safety, sustainability and cost,” Waze said, but it didn’t indicate what specifically that would look like.

Streaming services captured the largest share of television viewing for the first time ever in July, according to data released Thursday from Nielsen, the television ratings authority. Of all the TV watching time in July, 34.8% happened over streaming while 34.4% happened over cable. Broadcast TV captured a 21.6% share of the total.

Nielsen noted that streaming has surpassed broadcast before, but July marked the first time it’s also exceeded cable viewing. Cable television’s share of viewing fell about 9% from July 2021, while streaming’s share increased by nearly 23% year over year, according to the report. 

Netflix captured 8% of all viewing in July 2022, thanks in part to people watching nearly 18 billion minutes of the hit series Stranger Things, according to the Nielsen data. Several other streaming services — including Amazon Prime, YouTube and Hulu — captured their largest-ever share of viewing time in July.

It’s a time of change and increasing competition among streamers. Both Disney Plus and Netflix will be rolling out new ad-supported tiers in the coming months. Netflix had its largest drop in subscribers ever recently and is looking for ways to limit password sharing after raising prices at the beginning of 2022. Disney Plus, ESPN Plus and Hulu (all majority-owned by Disney) will all see price increases in the near future, too. HBO Max and Discovery Plus will merge starting in 2023 after their their parent companies did so earlier this year.

The eight Harry Potter movies are leaving HBO Max in the latest installment of the streamer’s tennis match with Peacock over the rights to stream the films. As of Aug. 31, fans of the franchise will need to visit rival service Peacock, which got the films at the start of July, to stream them.

HBO Max subscribers won’t be completely bereft of Potter-related content. All three movies in the Fantastic Beasts saga will still stream there. HBO Max is also the streaming home of the 20th anniversary Harry Potter special.

WarnerMedia’s Warner Bros. signed a licensing deal with NBC Universal years ago, though WarnerMedia’s HBO Max has pulled back the rights several times over the last few years, as each platform seeks the boost a popular franchise can give. 

Until any future license swap, you’ll need two platforms to stream the movies in order of CNET’s definitive rankings.

US government agencies have spent tens of thousands of hours securing the Log4j vulnerability since its discovery in December, the Cyber Safety Review Board said Thursday in its inaugural report to the public. Yet this vulnerability could be a cybersecurity issue for a decade or more, the board said.

The vulnerability in a widely used Java-logging library Apache Log4j can be used by hackers to take over computer servers if it isn’t patched. The library is popular partially because it’s free, but that means companies are left to create patches for it on their own. This can be a gargantuan lift. The review board, which was formed earlier this year under the Department of Homeland Security, noted that one cabinet agency had spent already 33,000 hours responding to the weakness.

Around the time the Log4j vulnerability became public knowledge, the US government warned companies to be on high alert against cyberattacks. Although attacks exploiting the vulnerability have occurred, they haven’t been as severe as feared.

“At the time of writing, the board is not aware of any significant Log4j-based attacks on critical infrastructure systems,” the Cyber Safety Review Board said. “Somewhat surprisingly, the board also found that to date, generally speaking, exploitation of Log4j occurred at lower levels than many experts predicted, given the severity of the vulnerability.”

Because it is so widespread, though, the board called the issue an “endemic vulnerability” that could persist for years to come. “Significant risk remains,” according to the report.
