This story is part of Focal Point iPhone 2022, CNET’s collection of news, tips and advice around Apple’s most popular product.

Give your iPhone a big upgrade by downloading iOS 16, available today for most iPhone devices. You’ll get a bundle of new lock screen options and plenty of other upgrades. Apple revealed the iOS 16 release date last week during its fall iPhone event. This is an annual tradition for Apple: Announce the next version of iOS in the spring at its WWDC conference, spend the summer testing the new operating system with developers and other beta testers, then launch the OS alongside the newest iPhone in the fall.

The new operating system will be available on the iPhone 8, the second-gen iPhone SE and all later models — X, 11, 12, 13 and 14, including Pro, Plus and Max models.

iOS 16 release date

Apple released iOS 16 on Monday, Sept. 12, following its usual cycle of new versions every fall.

iOS 16 new features

CNET has been testing the iOS 16 beta for months, so we already have a good idea of what to expect. The biggest iOS 16 features are a more customizable lock screen, the ability to edit and unsend iMessages (with limitations), some changes to lock screen notifications, enhancements to Apple Wallet and the ability to use SharePlay
 from messages.

These annual upgrades to iOS are important chances for Apple to make larger overhauls to its operating system, which it’s been doing since 2007. Users can still expect smaller updates throughout the year — iOS 15.6.1 was the previous version, and it includes an important security patch — but the September updates that upgrade iOS by an entire version usually involve the biggest changes.

Apple’s Newest Releases

How to download iOS 16

If you’re ready to download the new operating system, you can follow our iOS download guide. As always, remember to back up your data and make sure you’re on Wi-Fi before installing an update this big.

You should also consider waiting a few days before downloading to spare yourself the risk of inconvenient bugs that didn’t get squashed during the beta testing.

How big is the iOS 16 update?

The update for iOS 16 is about 2.8GB. It took me about an hour to download and install, so make sure you’re not going to need your phone for a while before you start the download.

The iOS 16 release date wasn’t the only thing announced Wednesday. Apple also showed off the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 8 and the new Apple Watch Ultra. Does your Windows 11 device feel too bright most of the time, regardless of the brightness settings? There might be an easy fix for you. Most devices now allow you to choose a default display mode: either light mode or dark mode. The default light mode uses dark text on light (usually white) background. Come to the dark side and you’ll see white text on black background. Windows users have the option to change the mode in settings.

CNET Tech Tips logoCNET Tech Tips logo

Dark mode has gained a lot of popularity over the years, with some alleged eye health benefits like reducing eye strain and making it easier to fall asleep at night. Our sister site Healthline found those claims inconclusive, but you may still want to use dark mode if you like the look.

Personally, I prefer dark mode because light mode tends to be too bright for my eyes, and dark mode ultimately feels more comfortable for me to look at. Whatever your reason, if you want to make the switch in Windows 11, you’re only a few short steps away.

How to enable dark mode in Windows 11

1. Click the Start tile and go to Settings > Personalization (or just right-click your desktop background and choose Personalize).

Desktop options menuDesktop options menu

Save yourself a step by right-clicking your desktop.

2. In the Personalization menu, choose Colors.

3. Navigate to Choose your mode and select Dark from the dropdown.

You can also choose Custom from the dropdown if you want different settings for apps versus Windows (e.g. the task bar at the bottom of your desktop).

If you want even more customization, you can use that Colors menu to change the colors for your app windows. Use that option to match your desktop background or just set your windows to your favorite color.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2003)

The Lord of the Rings is a masterclass in adapting beloved books to screen and weaving multiple stories together into one cohesive narrative. All the fantasy tropes are here: elves, dwarves, wizards, orcs and more. But the Lord of the Rings elevates them to new heights with its sweeping cinematography, shockingly immersive costuming and powerful performances. To put it another way: This trilogy won 17 Academy Awards, including 11 wins on 11 nominations for Return of the King. If you’ve been holding out, now’s the time to watch, and if you’ve seen them before, there’s never a bad time for a rewatch — especially with Amazon’s Rings of Power series coming out in the fall.

Warner Media

Harry Potter (2001-2011)

Harry Potter was a cultural phenomenon for 15 years, and although the books’ author has since left fans with more conflicted feelings about the franchise, there’s no denying the movies were some of the most influential fantasy films of the new millennium. All eight films — from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 — are available to watch on HBO Max. Prisoner of Azkaban, the series’ third entry, is a highlight, as is the two-part Deathly Hallows finale. Catch these movies before they leave HBO Max at the end of August.

Studio Ghibli

Spirited Away (2001)

This movie about transformation genuinely left me feeling transformed the first time I watched it. No other movie has affected me the way this one did. Arguably the best movie from a director responsible for many excellent movies, Spirited Away tells the story of Chihiro, a little girl who gets lost in a spirit world as her family moves across Japan. The animation is spectacular, and director Hayao Miyazaki’s careful pacing gives every character the perfect amount of time and space, delivering one of the most unique and compelling fantasy movies ever made.

Legendary Pictures

Godzilla (2014)

The 2014 reboot of the towering terror of Tokyo is underloved and underappreciated. No Godzilla movie before or since has done as much to sell the truly awesome scale of the monster. Yes, the movie takes a slow burn approach to revealing Godzilla, but the time it spends in the build-up makes the payoff that much sweeter. While some might not like the movie spending more time on the humans following Godzilla, those characters add emotional stakes to the carnage. You can also find the sequels King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong on HBO Max (along with the ’54 original), but this is Godzilla’s best showing.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

A classic fantasy movie, The Wizard of Oz follows Dorothy as she’s transported out of Kansas into a land of witches, wizards, living scarecrows and more. Judy Garland shines in her most iconic role as the lost-but-determined Dorothy. It’s a great early film for kids, who will enjoy the colorful characters and musical numbers, and adults might appreciate a glimpse into how movies were made 80 years ago.

Video screenshot by Bonnie Burton/CNET

Hellboy (2004)

Part superhero action movie, part World War II alternate history, part fantasy film about a demon child, Hellboy defies easy categorization. But director Guillermo del Toro weaves it all together into a dark and entertaining story about a man fighting against his apparent destiny. Hellboy is a cult classic because it treats its characters seriously while remembering that movies are meant to be entertaining, and Ron Pearlman wearing filed-down demon horns while being overprotective of cats is nothing if not entertaining.

Studio Ghibli/GKids

Princess Mononoke (1997)

Princess Mononoke will scar you. It’s a violent, tragic movie that deals with the devastation of the natural world in the wake of industrialization. It’s also the most visceral, harrowing movie Miyazaki ever made. Giant wolves, violent boars and wriggling parasitic demons all play vital roles in the story, which features more violence and bloodshed than anything else in the Ghibli collection. That’s part of what makes Mononoke so great — it feels distinct from all of Miyazaki’s other movies, thanks to its unflinching look at themes of fear, violence and fighting to protect the things that matter to us.

Studio Ghibli/GKids

The Secret World of Arrietty (2010)

Studio Ghibli is often synonymous with Miyazaki, but this film is proof the studio is perfectly capable of making good movies with other directors. An adaptation of Mary Norton’s book The Borrowers, Arrietty focuses on a young girl from a race of tiny humans who “borrow” things like tissue paper and cubes of sugar to survive. It’s a sweet little story about growing up, helping others and facing the uncertainty of the future.

Studio Ghibli/GKids

Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989)

Oh, you thought we were done with the Miyazaki movies? Any of them are worth a watch (Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle and Nausicaa are additional highlights), but Kiki’s Delivery Service holds a special place in my heart for how authentic it feels, even as a fantasy movie. Kiki is a bright, warm-hearted young witch, and as she ventures out on her own for the first time, she must learn to grapple with her powers, her feelings and her dreams all at once. It’s a powerful story, sometimes painful in how accurately it portrays Kiki’s struggles, but it’s an uplifting tale for kids and adults alike.

Your iPhone is a handy, versatile piece of technology. Looking for a new recipe? Easy. Need a new internet provider? You can do that, too. Trying to figure out which actor appeared in the most 007 movies? Just search online. (The answer: Desmond Llewelyn, who appeared as Q in 17 Bond films from the ’60s through the ’90s.) Regardless of what you need it for, your iPhone does a lot of work.

But here’s the thing: Whether you do your browsing in Chrome, Safari or elsewhere, your cache builds up digital clutter over time. Clearing your cache gives your browser a new start, which can speed up your browsing whether you’re using iOS 15 or the public beta of iOS 16. (And if you’re trying to get your phone to run faster, try managing your iPhone’s storage.)

CNET Tech Tips logoCNET Tech Tips logo

Clearing your cache is like clearing out your fridge. When you visit a site, your iPhone downloads photos, banners and other data. To make that process faster, most browsers store some data in a cache to make loading faster. It’s great when the fridge is fully stocked and you can quickly grab what you need… and less great when the thing you grab expired two months ago.

Eventually, your browser’s cache will become outdated and the data being retrieved no longer matches the data actually being used on the website. The result? Slower load speeds and wonky website formatting. This is the equivalent of your fridge being full of gross, expired products.

That’s why clearing your cache can help: It gives sites a fresh start in your browser and frees up some space in your storage. Note that clearing your cache will sign you out of sites you’re currently logged into. Still, it’s generally worth that mild inconvenience about every month to keep things moving quickly.

Here are step-by-step guides on how to clear your cache on your iPhone based on the browser you use.

How to clear your iPhone cache in Firefox

1. Click the hamburger menu in the bottom right corner to open up options.

2. Choose Settings at the bottom of the menu.

3. Select Data Management in the Privacy section.

4. You can select Website Data to clear data for individual sites, or select Clear Private Data at the bottom of the screen to clear data from all selected fields.

What happens when you clear the cache?

Clearing your cache removes the website data your phone stored locally to prevent having to download that data upon each new visit. The data in your cache builds over time and can end up slowing things down if it becomes too bulky. (My phone had about 150MB of data stored in Chrome when I checked.) Clearing that data gives sites a fresh start, which may fix some loading errors and speed up your browser. However, clearing your cache also signs you out of pages, so be prepared to sign in to everything again.

How often do I need to clear my cache?

Most people only need to clear their caches once every month or two. That’s generally the point when your browser will build up a cache large enough to start slowing things down. If you frequent a large number of sites, you should err on the side of clearing your cache more often.

Online tracking can be obnoxious. You spend five minutes searching for a pair of shoes, and then ads for those exact shoes follow you for the next several weeks. Sometimes, you’d like a little privacy in your online experience. Enter DuckDuckGo: a search engine that pledges to keep your search activity anonymous and not track online.

There are other private browsers, such as Brave, that block trackers and third-party cookies monitoring your activity as you search the web. But DuckDuckGo — which has invested increasingly in an advertising campaign — sees itself as a direct competitor to Google Search, complete with a mobile app and extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Safari and other browsers.

After major incidents like the Cambridge Analytica scandal, people have become more aware of how much personal information is available to tech companies and advertisers — and are opting out of being tracked when they can, as Apple’s iOS 14.5 allows you to do. While it doesn’t track users, DuckDuckGo’s app has been downloaded more than 50 million times in the last year alone — more than all other years combined since its launch 13 years ago.

Here’s what you need to know about DuckDuckGo and how it works to keep your searches more secure.

What is DuckDuckGo?

DuckDuckGo is a search engine that offers a mobile browser app and a desktop extension, both aimed at allowing you to browse the internet without companies gobbling up your personal data. It promises to keep your searches private, anonymous and offers built-in tracker blocking, so the sites you visit have a harder time collecting information about you.

Read more: Best VPNs of 2021

How does DuckDuckGo work?

For starters, DuckDuckGo does not track searches made through its browser extension or mobile app. Other browsers, including Chrome, allow you to use private or incognito windows that don’t track your search history, but their default windows do. (That’s the basis of every “embarrassing search history” joke.) Instead of making you navigate to a different version of its app, DuckDuckGo never tracks your search history.

Searches made through DuckDuckGo also automatically connect you to the encrypted versions of websites wherever possible, making it harder for anyone else to see what you’re looking at online. This is another scenario where both options (encrypted and unencrypted) exist on other search engines, but the default isn’t always the privacy-friendly option. DuckDuckGo saves you the extra steps of manually navigating to encrypted connections.

DuckDuckGo was criticized in May when researchers discovered some Microsoft tracking scripts while using DuckDuckGo’s browsers. The presence of Microsoft trackers seemed to fly in the face of the search engine’s privacy promise, and DuckDuckGo’s founder and CEO clarified on Reddit that the company was “currently contractually restricted by Microsoft” from stopping Microsoft scripts from completely loading. This is because the company uses Microsoft’s Bing to power its search results. The company followed up in August, however, by announcing that it would further restrict Microsoft trackers in its browsers.

However, DuckDuckGo remains ahead of other popular privacy options when it comes to blocking tracking data, and the company has clarified its app store descriptions to better clarify limitations in its privacy protections. DuckDuckGo had also previously disclosed its partnership with Microsoft, and its CEO said in the Reddit post that the company is working to get that restriction changed.

DuckDuckGo also actively blocks external trackers from following you around online. For a more detailed explanation of DuckDuckGo’s privacy features, check out DuckDuckGo’s blog.

How is DuckDuckGo different from Google Search? What about Incognito mode and private browsing?

DuckDuckGo essentially takes the opposite approach compared to other big tech companies like Google and Facebook, which have traditionally made money by targeting ads based on your browsing history and personal data. While Google has said it’s going to stop this practice, the platform still collects a ton of data about you, including your location and search activity — yes, even in incognito mode.

Incognito mode simply deletes information related to your browsing session from your computer: your history, cookies and any info you’ve entered into fields. Notably, it only does that after you end your session by closing out all your tabs. So if you leave your incognito tabs open for hours or days at a time, that information will still build up. And no matter what, Google can save your searches — and companies, internet service providers and governments can still track you across the internet, even when you’re using incognito mode.

DuckDuckGo is different because it doesn’t store your browsing data at all, and it blocks trackers while you’re browsing.

A blocked tracking notification on DuckDuckGoA blocked tracking notification on DuckDuckGo

When you first use the DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser, the app will walk you through the different ways it protects your privacy.

Screenshot from Adam Benjamin/CNET

If it isn’t targeting ads, how does DuckDuckGo make money?

DuckDuckGo still makes money from advertising — it just doesn’t use targeted ads. The search engine shows you ads based on the keywords you search for, which aren’t connected to your personal data like your browsing or purchase history. Essentially, you’ll only see ads for whatever you’re currently searching for, not the weird product your friend sent you a link to last week that you now can’t get away from.

How can I use DuckDuckGo?

On mobile devices, simply open your app store and search for “DuckDuckGo.” You’ll be able to download the DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser app and use it the same way you’d use Chrome or Safari. At the bottom center of your app, you’ll see a fire icon, which you can press at any time to close all your tabs and clear all personal data.

On desktop, go to duckduckgo.com, where you’ll see a button to add DuckDuckGo to your browser. On Chrome, you’ll be directed to the Chrome webstore page to download the extension for free. A single window doesn’t always cut it, especially if you’re working from home. Having multiple windows open makes it easier to bounce back and forth between different tasks. Whether you need to glance at data to write a report, keep a chat window open while browsing, or just watch videos as you “work” on your novel, sometimes you just need several things open at once. But juggling between full-screen windows can be tedious and time-consuming.

Fortunately, Macs offer a split screen mode, which allows you to stick two apps (or two separate browser windows) on different sides of your display. That way, you can glance between windows without having to navigate with your mouse or pressing Command + Tab.

How to enter Split View on a Mac

1. Make sure neither window you want to use is in full-screen mode.

2. In one of the windows you want to use, place your cursor over the green button in the top left. Instead of clicking to maximize the window, hover until you see a drop-down menu.

3. Select Tile Window to Left of Screen or Tile Window to Right of Screen. Your Mac will automatically enter split-screen mode.

4. From there, other open windows will be displayed on the opposite side of the screen. Click the window you want on the rest of your screen, and it will fill the remaining half.

5. If you want to adjust the size of the windows, use the slider in the center of the screen.

In Split View, you’ll be able to look at both windows simultaneously. Multitask away!

How to exit split screen on Macs

If you’re done using the split screen layout, here’s how to get out of it:

1. Move your cursor to the top of the screen until you see the sizing buttons at the top left of each window.

2. Click the red button to close that window or the green button to exit split screen.

3. Don’t panic! Your other window is still open — it’s just hidden in full-screen mode. To access it again, press the Mission Control button (F3) on the top row of your keyboard.

4. You should see two options at the top of the screen: Desktop and whatever window you had in split-screen mode. Click the other window, and use the green sizing button in the top left if you want to exit full-screen mode.

If you’re the kind of person (like me) who might need more than two windows open, you can always manually resize windows to fit three or four on your screen at once. The experience just won’t be as visually clean as using tiled windows.

Why won’t my Mac do split screen?

First, make sure you’re not currently in fullscreen mode. Split screen only works from the normal windowed view. If that’s not the issue, go to System Preferences > Mission Control and check to see whether Displays have separate Spaces is enabled. If not, enable it.

If you don’t see that option in the Mission Control menu, make sure you’ve updated to MacOS 10.11 or later. You can check your current OS version by clicking the Apple icon in the top left menu and then selecting About this Mac. If you’re using an earlier version, you’ll have to update by clicking the Software Update button on that screen.

Keep in mind that not all apps support split screen. If you’ve tried everything else and the app still won’t tile in split screen mode, the app probably doesn’t offer split screen mode.

How do you split screens on a Mac without full screen?

The official split screen function on Macs (called “Split View”) automatically splits two windows in full screen. If you don’t want the full-screen view (perhaps because you want to be able to quickly navigate between browser tabs), you can manually drag your windows to fit the desired space. This option gives you a little more customization than Split View.

What is the keyboard shortcut for split screen on Mac?

Start by using control + command + F to enter full-screen mode. From there you can hit F3 to pull up Mission Control and drag another app onto the app you currently have in full screen. Click back into the newly tiled apps and you’ll be in Split View.

If that’s still too many steps, you can create your own keyboard shortcut. Go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > App Shortcuts. You can click the + button to add a command named “Tile Window to Left of Screen” using your desired shortcut. Once you’ve activated the shortcut, your active window will tile to the left side of the screen and you can simply select a second window to be added to your split screen.

This story is part of WWDC 2022, CNET’s complete coverage from and about Apple’s annual developers conference.

Apple introduced MacOS Ventura, the next operating system for Mac computers, at Apple’s WWDC 2022 keynote on Monday. As the successor to MacOS Monterey, Ventura will offer new features in addition to upgrading Mac staples like Spotlight and Safari.

And that’s not the only change coming to the Mac world. Apple also announced a 2022 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, both with a new M2 chip. (Here’s a full list of the new tech Apple revealed at WWDC this week.)

Read on for all the updates and new tricks to expect when MacOS Ventura becomes publicly available this fall.

Stage Manager and other new features

Ventura adds a new feature called Stage Manager that helps you rearrange and group your open windows. Enabling the feature from Control Center will center your screen on one window, with other windows in a smaller thumbnail view on the side. Have multiple windows related to one project? You can group them together in Stage Manager, making it easier to jump around to what you need.

Stage Manager helps you organize your desktop in MacOS Ventura.

Apple

Ventura also brings updates to other apps and features. Upgrades to Spotlight will let you search the internet for images and also search within images. In Mail, you’ll be able to undo and schedule sent messages, and Apple touted “more accurate and complete results” in Mail’s search function. On Safari, you’ll be able to share tab groups and create Passkeys — unique login credentials for each individual site that requires a login.

Plus, MacOS Ventura features Metal 3, an upgrade to the software that powers gaming on MacOS devices. These upgrades will allow the MacBook Air to run games at 1080p resolution, and Mac Studio devices will be able to play in up to 4K.

MacOS Ventura brings new camera tricks

FaceTime gets an upgrade in the new MacOS, allowing you to seamlessly transition a call between iPhone, iPad and Mac. Ventura also lets you use your iPhone as your webcam in a new feature called Continuity Camera. A new Desk View feature uses the ultrawide camera on iPhones to create a portrait view and a desktop view side by side. Apple says Continuity Camera will work with every video chat app.

MacOS Ventura will enter public beta in July, and Apple plans to release it in the fall.

Apple

Apple’s MacOS has been around for more than 20 years, powering its Macs, MacBook Pros, MacBook Air and similar devices. However, Apple’s Mac computers only represent less than 10% of the computers being used today. Apple’s homegrown M-series chip is helping to change that, though. Apple said fans bought so many M1 Macs when they hit the market a year ago that they helped push the company’s desktop and laptop revenues to an all-time high of $9.1 billion during the first three months of the year. Sales were up a whopping 70% from the same period a year earlier.

Apple’s latest iPhone software update, iOS 15.5, brings a small handful of new features and updates to your iPhone. It’s not the biggest iOS update, but you’re missing out if you haven’t downloaded it.

The follow-up to iOS 15.4 offers a few small upgrades and improvements to apps that lay the groundwork for larger iPhone updates in the future (maybe in the form of iOS 16). Instead of bigger new features like Universal Control and mask-friendly Face ID, iOS 15.5 brings updates to Apple Cash, Photo Memories and the Podcasts app, to name a few.

Here’s everything you need to know about iOS 15.5 and its new features. For more, check out CNET’s biggest hopes for iOS 16 (we could get a look at the next major iPhone update at Apple’s WWDC in June) and what you can do to give your iPhone a privacy boost. Plus, there’s a secret trackpad on your iPhone that’ll make typing way easier.

iOS 15.5 release date

Apple released iOS 15.5 on May 16, alongside iPadOS 15.5.

How do I download iOS 15.5?

You can download iOS 15.5 by going to Settings > General > Software Update > Download and Install. The 15.5 update is about 630MB.

Apple Cash

The biggest functional change in 15.5 is the inclusion of Send and Request buttons for Apple Cash. With these buttons in iOS 15.5, you can receive and send money directly from your Apple Cash card, saving you a few steps for those transactions.

Podcasts app

A new feature in iOS 15.5 lets you change the settings in the podcast app to better manage your phone’s storage. The setting allows you to limit the episodes stored on your phone and can automatically delete older episodes.

“Sensitive locations” in Photo Memories

iOS 15.5 tweaks the Memories function of Photos. Photos will no longer recommend Memories from “sensitive locations,” which 9to5Mac notes are currently all related to the Holocaust. Apple could expand that list of locations in the future.

iTunes Pass renamed Apple Balance

Another change is that the iTunes Pass feature for Wallet is renamed Apple Balance. You’ll now find a separate card in Apple Wallet for Apple Balance, similar to how a credit card shows up in your Wallet.

Apple Classical

There’s no Apple Classical app in iOS 15.5. But MacRumors found references to a new Apple Classical app in the 15.5 beta that seems to be the endgame for Apple’s acquisition of classical music streaming service Primephonic last year. Future iOS updates could include a stand-alone app for classical music.

More SportsKit support

iOS 15.5 also offers more support for SportsKit as Apple brings live baseball into its content catalog.

While you’re exploring the changes to iOS 15.5, check out all the rumors we’ve heard about Apple’s iOS 16. We’ll also show you how to unlock your iPhone while wearing a mask and the newest privacy features you should try out. We also answer the question of when Apple’s developer conference, WWDC, is being held this year, where we expect the first glance at iOS 16. Leaving your PC on all the time might be convenient, but you should still shut it down roughly once a week. Turning your computer off gives it a chance to close out of background processes that can accumulate over time and drain your PC’s performance.

Shutting down also gives your computer’s components — such as its cooling system — a chance to rest.

Just like any other machine, computers can break if they run nonstop for too long. Sleep mode helps minimize that risk, but your computer can still benefit from a complete shutdown from time to time.

Restarting your PC is sometimes required to apply important updates, including security patches, which is why you should shut down or restart every week or so.

Here are a few of the ways to turn off or restart your PC in Windows 11.

How to shut down and restart via taskbar

1. Click the Start button on your taskbar. (The Start button looks like four squares.)

2. Click the circular power button in the bottom right of the Start menu.

3. Then choose if you’d like to shut down your computer, restart it or put it to sleep.

If you’re all about efficiency, you can save a step when shutting down this way1. Right-click the Start button on your taskbar and mouse over Shut down or sign out

2. Select Shut down, sleep, restart or sign out

How to shut down and restart with shortcuts

1. On your desktop press Alt + F4 (be warned: if you have a browser or other app open, this will instantly close the app). Windows will ask you whether you want to shut down, switch users, sign out, put your computer to sleep or restart your computer.

2. Select your preferred option and then click OK.

You can also use a classic combination to force a shutdown.

1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete simultaneously to pull up the options menu

2. Click the circular power button in the bottom right corner of your screen

3. Choose Sleep, Shut down or Restart

Netflix is expected to release the fourth season of Stranger Things on Friday, May 27, and a lot has changed since we last watched the kids from Hawkins, Indiana take on the Mind Flayer at the end of season 3. But before you jump right into binge-watching the first seven episodes of season 4, you may want to consider an alternative way of enjoying the series.

I’m not here to tell you to stop binge-watching. We’re now in our third year of a global pandemic, the US is experiencing sharp inflation, and every day is starting to feel like a survival test. If watching an entire TV series in one week is what keeps you going, don’t let me stop you. But it shouldn’t be the default way of viewing.

Stranger Things isn’t the only series to tempt viewers to watch the entire series in one sitting. When House of Cards debuted on Netflix in 2013, it changed the TV industry in two ways. It was the first big-budget TV series with well-known actors that was available to anyone with an internet connection and access to the streaming service — no cable contract needed. And viewers could watch the entire season’s 13 episodes at once.

It wasn’t the birth of binge-watching, not quite. Anyone with access to a whole season of TV on home video could binge their way through entire seasons, one VHS or DVD at a time, long before Netflix. But this was the first time that a new show dropped an entire season at once, leaving pacing to the viewers, rather than being dependent on the weekly TV schedule. And the world has been binge-watching TV shows ever since.

And that’s fine, if it works for you. But I’d like to suggest an alternative: If you pace your TV watching, you might just like it better than binge-watching. Here’s why.

The time between episodes is meaningful

Some of my favorite TV-watching memories don’t happen on screen. They’re not big action sequences or plot twists, nor powerful performances from the actors in the show. Instead, they’re the moments after the episode, talking to friends and family about what just happened, connecting it to threads from earlier in the series and speculating about what will happen next.

When WandaVision premiered last year, new episode releases were an event in my home. My girlfriend and I would grab takeout, watch the new episodes, and then spend up to an hour just talking about everything we just watched. Those conversations challenged our memories, attention to detail and creativity, and the experience surrounding the show is what I remember most fondly.

downloaddownload

WandaVision’s twists and turns were all the more interesting on a weekly schedule.

Marvel

Binge-watching replaces those moments with an immediate dopamine hit from starting a new episode. For some types of shows, like reality and competition series, that might be a perfectly fine tradeoff. But for anything with dramatic stakes, I want the tension created by time between one episode and the next. Cliffhangers should pinch — that’s what makes the payoff worthwhile. The fun of seeing someone show up unexpectedly at the end of an episode is pondering what it might mean for the next one. What theories does it confirm and which ones does it shoot down? There’s no time for that kind of playful speculation in a binge-watch.

If the magic of poetry happens in the line breaks between words, where your imagination has to fill in the gaps, the magic of television, to me, happens between episodes. It’s the connection we create with other people when we share observations, questions and theories. “What do these cryptic commercials in WandaVision mean?” And, sure, you can do that with shows you’ve binged, but it’s an almost impossibly large task to condense an entire season’s worth of thoughts into one conversation. Watching a show week-by-week gives you more time to think about what’s going on, to speculate about what’s upcoming, and to share those thoughts with other people. That kind of discourse has only become more valuable since the start of the pandemic, and one of the truly great things about entertainment is the way it unites people and offers a means of connection.

When you watch slowly, the show stays with you

Binge-watching can be exciting because it’s a lot of information all at once. Meeting new characters and sometimes new worlds is invigorating, and binge-watching gives you that action in a concentrated dose. But it also crams that joy into a tiny, little box.

Watching a whole season of TV in one weekend is a fundamentally different experience than watching a show week-to-week as it airs. Binge-watching a show minimizes the amount of time you spend exploring that series — the amount of time it spends interacting with the rest of your life.

Avatar Korra fire and water bendingAvatar Korra fire and water bending

You might find yourself connecting with characters more if you slow down your viewing.

Nickelodeon

To me, there’s a little more magic in the “slow-watch,” and a big part of that magic is tied to the passage of time. Watching a show as it airs, especially something on network TV, means the characters are aging alongside you. For shows that run more than just a few seasons, you might go through significant personal growth during the course of the show, and you might find parallels in some of the characters you’ve been watching that whole time.

That’s one of the reasons The Legend of Korra made a bigger impression on me than Avatar: The Last Airbender. Both are amazing shows and some of the best animated series ever made. But I watched Avatar over a period of about two months, whereas Korra was actively part of my life for two-and-a-half years. And the passage of time — real-world time — added layers to Korra’s journey that I don’t think I would have felt in an abbreviated timeframe. Between the premiere and the finale, I moved across the country, made new friends, tried things I had never done before, and learned how to deal with failure. I wouldn’t have had time for all of those things in a binge viewing, and I wouldn’t have felt as connected to Korra doing those things over the course of the show.

Binge-watching doesn’t negate that character growth or your ability to connect to it, but I do think it offers a more limited version of those things compared to weekly watching.

To binge or not to binge

There are plenty of good reasons to binge-watch shows. Maybe you’re trying to power through a slow start or a bad season that would be agonizing for you to watch at a slower pace. Maybe your friends are terrible about spoiling things for you. Maybe you have limited free time, or maybe you just want to maximize your subscription to minimize how much you spend on streaming each month

But, to me, binge-watching is the TV viewing equivalent of a fling. It’s a sudden burst of excitement that’s over quickly and doesn’t stay with you. Slow-watching a series is more like a long-term relationship — a commitment, and sometimes a test of patience, but also something more affecting and more valuable. And streaming services seem to agree: Netflix is releasing Stranger Things season 4 in two separate volumes nearly a week apart from each other, and Disney Plus, HBO, Hulu and Prime Video all release new episodes of their shows on a weekly basis.

So the next time you find a show you’re really excited about watching, consider slowing things down and letting yourself luxuriate in it.
